Hello Fellow Evo geeks,
quite by accident, I successfully powered off and back on my evo 3d, and retained temp root ! Now i dont know if this was a fluke and wont happen agian, but im not going to loose my root to try it... however I felt it was my duty to share this
odd happening with others.
I had spent some time yesterday rooting my 3d again after having to do a hard data wipe and factory restore on it. I achieved root and installed titanium backup and cpu master (which is pretty cool!) it was late in the evening and i decided to
go to sleep, and not thinking i grabbed the 3d and powered it off by holding down the power button until it blacked out and the only thing left on were the menu icons at the bottom of the unit screen, which go out in about 3 seconds at that point and its dead....
I realized what i had just done and freaked, and started pressing the power button repeatedly trying to save it...
IT COMPLETLY SHUT DOWN AND ALL LIGHTS AND SCREEN WERE OFF.. IT WAS DEAD OFF...
THEN ABOUT 10 SECONDS LATER... IT STARTED TO POWER UP... I just knew
that it had lost its root....when it was fully started.. i opened titanium backup
and it said ROOT ACHIEVED AND OPENED UP READY FOR USE !!!
and has been working ok with root since...
ORIGINALLY ,,, I USED THE ONLY METHOD TO ROOT IT THAT IT WOULD TAKE...
PERMA TEMP ROOT VIDEO ON YOUTUBE
THATS ALL... MABY ONE OF YOU BRAVE SOULS WANT TO SACRIFICE YOUR TEMP ROOT TO EXPERIMENT AND SEE IF THIS CAN BE RECREATED ???
No useful info to help "duplicate" what happened
But pretty cool... Try it again

It's possible you hit reboot and had fastboot checked? Interesting, nontheless.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Yup, if fast boot is checked your phone is not fully turned off. You will lose root If your battery dies or you reboot.
yep but the point here is that I rebooted without loss of root !!!!!
if I can do it once so can u

You're missing the point. A fastboot is not really a reboot.
But something just occurred to me ... if you're saying that you "powered off" the device, and didn't just do a "reboot", then you may really have something there, because I think a "power off" ignores the fastboot flag.
If you restart you will lose root If you power off you won't lose root I have done it many times

This has been known since before the temp root and evo3d - sense 3.0 "fast boot" option works like hibernation in windows.

He's correct. Restarting and powering off with fast boot on uses completely different method.
How did you think the phone was able to power on in 10-15 seconds, yet restarting would take over a minute?

are you tying to be smart? i know the 3D just came out but I know what the fastboot is
my ? was for the not losing root part. Like i know we have temp root, but loses on reboot. But according to this we could always have root by using this fastboot method, making it permanent really.
So only way to lose root is by pulling battery you saying or something?

Wow nice work!
I do intend on loading this one! , maybe after you do your tweaking..=)
thank you for this =)
Nice animation, and I just happened to have the perfect mp3 for it. I had the THX Fox Intro mp3 downloaded already, so here is your boot animation with the audio:

I added gain to the mp3 to make it louder, but if you want the original, shoot me a PM and I'll get it to you.
that looks excellent! very good work!

most likely i'll do some more work. my phone took a dive in the pool over the weekend, so i'm letting it "air out" a bit before i put the battery back in it. pretty sure it's hosed, but we'll see.
if i have in fact trashed my phone, i'll probably hit someone up for some testing.
you have something in mind or are you wanting to take it and run with it in another direction?

No, this is a great animation. Just you said you would work on the artifacts, so I wondered if you would be doing that.
Bad luck on your phone. My iPhone 3GS took a spin in the washing machine, and that was that. No amount of rice was bringing it back.

phone actually boots up, but the screen is fsck'd. back in the rice it went, but i know it's not gonna make any difference, but i'll let it sit for a while longer while i decide on what to do about a new phone. really hurt to bring my gayPhone back into service, i hate that frickin' thing.
anyhow, in answer to your question, yeah, i'll fix the artifact problems. i wanted to add an android to it as well, but i'm still toying around with some ideas.

I've only been here for a little while but a majority of noobs that register here with the specific intent to fix a brick do so because they dl'ed and flashed crap from zedomax and/or galaxys2root.
Did what you flashed have boot loaders? I'd almost say no but who knows. If it did you have to flash a stock Rom with i777 boot loaders. Use Odin. There are plenty of resources here to help, take a look around and have patience. Good . Luck.

@yupitzfreddy,
We can help you out, but you need to post some detailed information. You seemed to be in a hurry at first, but you havn't posted anything in a couple of hours.
You need to get the phone into download mode. With the phone turned off, and your original phone usb cable plugged into your computer, plug the cable into your phone while holding down both vol- and vol+ (but not power). Then press vol+ to enter the download screen. Does that get you into download mode? What does your flash counter, the text at the top of the screen say? You can turn the phone back off by holding the power button for a few minutes.
Let us know how you're doing.

I think your best bet is re-attempting to flash a SBF using RSD Lite. Try with RSD Lite 5.6 (it can be downloaded from here).
If you are able to flash the SBF successfully, you may end up in a boot loop. To resolve that, get into Recovery and do a wipe data / wipe cache.
That must be the same with Sensation, if you flash something new, you need to (edit: deleted).
If you can get into android recovery format system, format cache, format data then try and run your sbf. you must clear out cm7 prior to sbf.
Thanks for the advice, but the battery on the phone died! Is there a way to charge it?
USB trick...
I did all of this, then installed the SBF. Here are some screenshots of my progress.

Didnt realize you had already done all of what i posted in your other thread. That's why you got kindof bashed on for making two of the same thread Saying it failed is actual normal in most cases. Mine always says it fails but always works. Reboot your phone and see what happens.
After using the sbf, I reboot the phone and for the first time it looks like it might actually boot up. It gets to the "Sprint" screen, Where it says "Welcome to Now" once it shows "Now" the phone hangs there, then goes back to the Motorola screen. Not much luck here so far.. :/

You would have to do the usb trick. Take an old usb cable, cut the opposite end off and strip the wire slightly. Place the positive wire on the positive panel on the phone, and the negative on the negative. Plug it into your AC adapter and it'll charge. Theres videos on how to properly do this on youtube. But its really not hard.
Oh, so it's like charging a car battery? Seems simple enough. I wish these wires weren't so damn small though! xD

I had the same **** happen to mine just the other day, were you unlocked before and used any 2.3.5 rom. I charged my phone over night and used it this morning, I got into work an left it in the office came back a couple of hours later and saw I had a message (led light flashing) tried to unlock it and it wouldnt wake. So i decided to take the battery out and reboot it and after I did that it wouldnt turn on at all. I've left it all day and came home and tried to put it on charge because i thought maybe somehow the battery was drained. Im not sure if its charging because the rom I use (liquid smooth) doesn't use the led light when charging. I don't know if it could be the power button. Is there anything i can do before sending it off to be fixed? I have tried connecting it to the computer aswell but without it being on the computer doesnt recognise anything it connected.

The sudden death issue is covered by warranty.
The internal SD dies and they have no way to know you flashed / rooted it unless they really wanted too.
You should be okay, just a little unlucky
Make sure to update your device to the latest firmwares that include the SDS patch to avoid further problems.

Well if you can`t even go into download mode then it`s unlikely they will even know that you rooted your phone. Just play dumb and do not mention that you rooted your phone. Just say that it died without a reason. Issues like yours do happen even on old Stock Samsung Firmware without Root because of the SD issue.
As Long As They Can Not Access Download Mode They Will Never Know. On My Phone (Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G) When I Go Into Download Mode It Say How Many Times I've Flashed Kernels, Roms Etc So Just Make Sure It's Completely Dead No Recovery No Download Then Call Samsung, Otherwise They'll Find Out You Voided Your Warranty And Then You'll Have To Pay Out Of Pocket, Just Play Dumb When Talking To Customer Support Just Say You Researched This Issue Online And That You Believe You Received One Of The Sudden Death GS3, and They Should Be Able To Help You Just Never Mention Rooting/Custom Rom You Should Be Fine.

Finally someone commented about that, it's kinda annoying and makes your comment extremely hard to read, I personally didn't bother to even read it.
yes you're right things do break and go wrong, just seems weird that I wasn't using it at the time and maybe a text message just set it off. Is there anyway i could possibly salvage anything on my sd card? or will that be alright? I don't want to lose all my pictures and videos.
If you can't get the phone into download or recovery mode then no the internal sd card is fried, the only files you can retrieve will be from the external sd or backups if you have any... sorry.

nightmare, nevermind these things happen. Again thankyou all for the help.
This seems to have corrupted my external SD card aswell, is this normal? do i just need to reformat it to get it back to working order or is it going to be harder than that?

I have TWRP installed on my LGOG e970, with bootloader unlocked.
I [very recklessly] tried to install MIUI on my phone. TWRP didn't say "Failed" or anything of the sort when it was applied. It said everything went smoothly. I rebooted the system and now the phone won't even boot back into bootloader. If I try to hold the volume up + power button for more than 10 seconds, it starts flashing the power button consistently, but it stops when I let go of the buttons. Computer won't recognize it and I can't get it into Download Mode.
Any help?
Knowing what MIUI ROM you tried to install could possible help. Not that I will be able to though.

If you plug phone into charger, does power button flash rapidly. If so you need to disconnect battery.
3.1.25 off the miui.us website.
no. the phone literally does nothing until i hold the power button [i've found that it's just the power button; volume buttons dont really matter] for more than 10 seconds.

LG G2X
Version: 2.7.27

i basically just wanted to see if it would even let me. as if by some miracle, everything would just magically work for me. i figured a build off another LG phone would be the closest, so that's the one i tried.

Yeah it wouldn't have even come close to working. Unfortunately, it must have done some serious re-mapping to your partitions. Since you can't get into download mode, there is no chance of LGNPST to stock. Maybe someone in IRC knows a trick but it looks like your phone is toast. Try to get LG to do a warranty replacement. Just say it stopped working.

Can flashing something in recovery actually remap the partitions?
Op, try THIS, sounds like it may help.
Why would you flash a ROM for a two year old phone on here and expect to not brick?

You can't fix stupid. Sorry, but there's no other way to put it. Phones are pretty hard to completly brick from what I've been told, but I still use caution every time I tinker with the underlying software. Then there's this guy.
The guy is freaking retarded. I don't care how much flak I catch for this statement, but fu**nuggets like this guy are the biggest reason carriers and manufacturers try to keep us from rooting and flashing ROMs (right behind free tethering anyway lol).

I really don't get how he openly admits to flashing a completely wrong ROM. Like how do you manage to unlock, root, install TWRP, find MIUI, and flash it, but have no idea it's bad. The rom he flashed is over 6 months old too, and he just though everything "would magically work." He even works for AT&T you've got to be kidding me.

I wanted to say it so bad, but didn't want to catch a crap ton of flak for it.

for science!!!
lol you guys are funny. i've been rooting, jailbreaking, unlocking and developing for 6 years; it's not like i dont know what i'm doing. i figured it'd brick it, but not this bad. you can almost ALWAYS fix a brick. i was just seeing if anyone knows of a solution, since it's a fairly new phone and even newer to me. if you dont push your limits, you dont know how far the phone can go. simple as that. working for at&t has no relevance; there are some technology-stupid reps out there.
if you're gonna make a mess, make sure you can clean it up. no worries, i have a new LG now with zero expense. notice the lack of worry in this thread. moral of the story: don't push your phone when you're drunk!
thanks for the positive reinforcement though, guys. you've all been so sweet.
