SO I and MANY others have been experiencing a "regional restriction" set by either HTC, or the Market on the Flyer, which doesn't exist on any other device (that I know of). I was browsing my Pulse feeds, and came along an article reviewing this app. I thought I'd give it a shot, and sure enough, some of the apps I couldn't install on my Flyer were INSTALLED! I sent the apk's from my phone (EVO 4G) to myself in GMail, and BAMM! I only tried a few, but now have Google Voice, Bank of America, and more on my Flyer! I thought I'd share, since the problem is pretty wide spread, as I've read on MULTIPLE forums... Hopes this alleviates some frustration!

Now if that would work with Netflix, I would be very happy. I'm going to try it, but think there are other limitations.

Really strange...I'm in the US and got Netflix no problem...But I can't get Google Voice app nor Bank of America.
Woah ... Now I don't see Netflix in the market. I mean I did before, I installed it. I thought it would be listed with an orange "Installed" beneath it...Maybe it was temporarily there by some random chance and I snagged it??
Launching Netflix it asks me if I want to update, there's a new version. I say ok and it can't find the file to update. So it's definitely gone now and I can't update...But I can hit cancel and use it like normal.

What is up with that restriction? I've been getting the same problem for NFS SHIFT. Can't find gvoice on the market.
And the most annoying one. Is the YouTube videos only playing the first 20 secs of each video. I tried factory reset but nothing.
I got my flyer from ebay, I wonder if there's a way to check this restriction you are talking about.
Btw I downloaded the Google voice apk and it worked. NFS (which I already purchased) won't work even after installing the apk.
I used the app that is linked in the first post to email the .apk for every useful app from my old Droid x and my Evo 4g phones. Without exception, they all work on my HTC EVO View.
When I called HTC about the Bluetooth Hands Free profile not being available on the EVO View / Flyer, I brought-up my frustration about apps that work on the device not being available on the market. He blamed the problem on Google and Sprint. He said HTC had nothing to do with restricting availability of apps.

I wonder if I have an European flyer which has different market ? Google voice is US only, makes sense to exclude it from the UK market. Maybe that's the case ? Is there a way to check?
Also same thing with video restrictions due to location including YouTube won't play on my flyer. Im almost positive that's what's going on, I got it on eBay, so it could be anything, even Asian.

I sideloaded the google voice .apk, then added the EVO View's number to my Google Voice account. The Google Voice inbox Widget works fine and keeps me from having to fool around with my phone while driving. I doubt if it would work with the Flyer, since it does not have a phone number.
Tried to correct spelling, wound-up double posting. If a moderator could delete this one, I would appreciate it.

I was about to start exactly the same thread. I can't install most of the popular apps on my Flyer. No Raging Thunder, no NFS Shift, no Dolphin Browser... It seems nothing is compatible with my device. Android web market says "This item is not compatible with your device HTC Flyer P512".
Anyone experiencing the same? I'm living in Turkey, is this happening because of a regional restriction?
I did a full wipe of the device and still noticed things missing afterwards in the market.
Appbrain (which is a great little app ) and Appbrain.com seem to have allowed me to get -most- of what I can't find in the market by searching. Wierd eh?
This is honestly not what I was expecting since I had the Xoom and wanted a smaller form factor to use daily.

Thought that Market Enabler would only work with cell connected devices? And since ours is wifi only, it sees our source IP and blocks it?

I run into this problem as well on mine, so I just download on my DInc2, use Astro to backup and push it to a folder on my dropbox, and load from there....have done quite a few apps that way.
Convoluted, but it works

Honestly, I am baffled the devs haven't rooted this yet. I didn't get the vibe that HTC products were difficult considering how fast root is achieved on HTC phones. Totally different I suppose?

Most of the unavailable software are listed in HTC Likes app, but when I try to install, it says "The requested item could not be found".
Same goes for me. I can find the apps I'm looking for (mainly Google Voice) in appbrain, but when I try to install, the item cannot be found in the market, like when I search for them there... Really doesn't make any sense (pun intended). I can't get HTC likes to work for some reason, either... Different thread for that, though...

Good news: some titles have started to appear on the market.
Hi fellows,
I have got my Flyer a few days ago and absolutely loving it (like most of us here). However, I am a little stuck with something. There are a number of apps I don't find in the Android Market, which I had installed on my Desire S. For instance, below are the ones I find missing:
1- Marktplaats
2- Whatsapp
3- ABN AMRO Saldo
These are some of the must have apps for me. One thing I am suspecting is that since I have a Wifi only device, these apps might require a "phone" to get installed. Can someone here with a Flyer 3g version be kind enough to check these apps in the Android Market and let me know if they are available on the 3g models. If so, I'll sell mine and get a 3g version.
I also tried installing them from Appbrain but to no avail. Any other suggestion on how can I get them on my Flyer Wifi?
Thanks for your time and input in advance.
cheers,
Also on the last Facebook For Android Update it disappeared from my market too allthough i have it installed! (is not very good optimized for high res devices though).
BTW, Whatsapp doesn't shows up neither on my market.
Flyer 32GB/3g version.
I've noticed that many things are missing from the Market as well. When I go to the market through the browser and try to manually install it, I get an error that says my phone is not supported.
That implies to me that if your Flyer can't run it, it won't even show up in the market. This also goes for if the developers "update" an app and somehow neglect to add Flyer support... then it'll disappear from the market.
The app that I was trying to get was Netflix, which now works for Gingerbread... but doesn't work yet for our Flyers... They are still working on it, I'd guess...
Actually I've noticed apps that require the permission for "Phone: Read State of the Phone" or something like that, don't work most probably because we don't have phone.apk or dialer or whatever it is that lets you make phone calls.
App devs should consider tablets not to have this and remove it from the permissions they require.

Actually the 3G version does have a phone (disabled), SMS contacts etc. most of these apps should run just fine on the flyer. HTC really messed up with leaving the actual phone option disabled on this causing poor user experience both in regards to market access and actual usability.

They aren't about to let you have a smartphone for as cheap as 20$/month
.
Firstly, a brand new device (my DHD went through this) is only able to see generic Google apps for about 1-2 months after launch.
Secondly (this does not apply to the OP) apps are limited by your location for who knows what reasons (Rights/social/religious restrictions ).
I have had 3x Android devices and live in the Mid-East. Google market is bare bones here but as soon as I take my devices back to UK... The curtains open on all the fair fields of app pleasure...
Can't get any dang updates when back here though... Anyone PM me the latest Fotmob apk?

for me it can't be location related. I have Desire S and Flyer both and live in The Netherlands. Apps on Desire S don't show up on my Flyer. I have also seen that Phone access is also not the factor (as some suspected), as some of the apps I have loaded on my Flyer did require Phone access and they installed even when Flyer is not a phone and mine is not even a 3G. Not sure what is keeping the full list of Android market apps to show up on Flyer.
I am also having trouble finding certain apps and I have the Evo View. Specifically Google Voice. I can get it to come up on App Brain but it says i can only download it from the Market which tells me it can't be found . I was kind of hoping to be able to do voice calls on this thing.
Contacted HTC
I'm not sure if anyone has contacted HTC yet about the missing apps so I sent them an email last night. I have the Evo View 4G and think the missing app problem can be resolved. At least I hope so. I don't mind installing APKs, but it doesn't make for easy updates and, frankly, we really shouldn't have to.
I do understand that certain apps won't be compatible with every device and these tablets are new to the market. But I think the ones that ARE missing are strange.
I haven't contacted HTC but I did send an email to the developer of one of the missing apps. No word yet. Even if you download APK from appbrain website and install "web installer" apk from the market, it still doesn't install the app. So it is not just not-showing issue, those apps are somehow not compatible with HTC flyer. Not sure what the difference is. Let's see if you get any response back from HTC.
HTC Response
Well, I did receive a response and basically was told to do what you've done and contact the developers.
"I understand that with you HTC Evo View 4G is not able to pull certain applications on the Market. With those applications I checked the Market on our tablet and they were not listed for me either. I believe with the device being so new the developers of those applications have yet to put the Evo View on their device list which allows people with those devices to download those applications. It is up to the developers to add support for the Evo View. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
Not exactly sure how other 'new' device get automagic app support without developers going in and checking the compatibility settings. Doesn't really make sense.
Agree! I don't think there would be a check box in the app somewhere for Flyer compatibility, which all of these developers missed to tick. Anyway, thanks for sharing the response from HTC. I'll send that to the developer and see if I get something back this time.
Let me know what you hear back from the Dev and if I need to get HTC back on the line, I will happily do so.
that's really strange. If I follow the link to the missing app on market.android.com, it works on my PC. But when I click on the same link from my HTC Flyer, it says "requested item could not be found". It really seems like that the access is blocked for HTC Flyer. May be we need to spoof the identity to install these apps.
I have forwarded HTC's response to the dev and let's see what they come back with.
Cheers,
OK. I made some more progress on this one. If I go to market.android.com and try to install ABNAMRO SALDO app (the one I am using as a test case), I see this (attached).
It lists all my Android devices and you can read what it says under HTC Flyer. Translation: this item is not compatible with your device.
I have sent email to ABNAMRO dev team. Waiting to hear from them. Will keep everyone posted.
I get the same thing here for the View. Keep me posted. Anxious to see what the dev comes back with. Also ready to contact HTC again. Good luck!

Don't get that mad on the "phone disabled" thing. it just happened with the Facebook For Android official app. The last update just went away while other apps updated without problems.
Is not only not showing up since the beggining, is also disappearing once we were able to download them.
BTW, i have audiogalaxy installed which checks "phone status" and works w/o problems.
But it seems it's not compatible with my 3g flyer. Anyone know a way around this? Is the apk floating around somewhere?

I had to install it on my phone, register it. then back it up with TB and restore using TB on my Flyer. THEN it worked, otherwise it would just force close on startup.
oh interesting. I just got force closes after installing apk and gave up...will give titanium backup a go. Guess I have a reason to root now!
.
If you have a 3G Flyer and can not see certain apps on the market, it is due to carrier/country limitations.
First, I advise you save your desktop theme (or it will reset to default HTC, as when you bought it)
Borrow a US or European SIM card from someone (if you don't already have one) , shut down and then insert it into the Flyer.
You will be asked to confirm your Google password and then when you go to the market, it will be open.
Soz to the WiFi only guys, this is something that will not work for you until PPTP VPN is working for Android so you can fake your location..(or does anyone think that's WHY, PPTP encrypted has never worked... Hmmm)

It is true as far as the country/carrier situation (or did you not read my post! I can use sign language if you wish. )
You may be in the US (country) but your carrier may not allow viber to be listed as it is a voip package and they would lose their nice call profits.
If an app still does not show no matter what country/carrier, then that is down to the actual developer not having approved your device in the compatibility list. Either there is a real compatibility problem or he just ain't got around to it yet.
Don't moan if you sideload it and it screws your device....

some of the games are not supported due to the screen resolution. Not all games run on different screen reso's.
It's not just games, there are several apps that don't work unless you grab the apk, for example Groupon.
Ahh OK, thanks. Well hopefully more apps will be updated to support it. It wasnt necessarily games i already had... I just noticed that some of the 10ยข apps weren't showing up on my rezound that were showing up on my wife's Droid pro and my old fascinate.

They are different $0.10 apps each day, as well as for different devices.
I asked groupon, and either their staff is incompetent or the email went too low on the totem pole. People asked me if my display for the rezound (when I told them it was a rezound) was QVGA, and refused to respond to the emails.
Does anyone have a link to the current groupon apk or a way to download that even though they simply don't list it for my phone?
with games, if our phone does not have support for it then it will not show up for us(like Asphalt 6 HD - no graphic support).
sometimes though, google or the dev will remove an app for any given reason. of course, when this happens you could always do a web search for "filename. apk" 4shared.com is a popular site that hosts. apk files(and they also have an app in market)

You dont want to stop the update because if you do, you will not be able to get apps or update current apps with the old market.
Anything else that relies on the newer market will fail as well. I doubt you could stop it anyway..
Install an older version of the Market and use Titanium Backup to freeze the Market Updater...but there's no good reason to not update.
The new market is great! LOL, it is pretty much the same. The only difference if you have a tablet and that allowed you to purches music through the app. Again looks pretty much the same. New name

personally the name change is annoying as all hell, google quit trying to program your brand name in my brain, when i want to buy and app or something i want to go to the market or to the store, not go to the google and pick up a new app.
every-time i'm in a rush trying to pull something from the app market i can't find the bloody icon because i'm looking for the market or in the old location on my app drawer, minor change i know but i have caught myself cussing at google when i needed to re-d/l my gps app after it crashed during a trip i as on a few days ago.
any chance of renaming the new app back to market without root?
Just use a launcher and if already do, just change the name duh..lol that's what I did ....

The only way to get around using Google Play is to not use android. What you're asking is the equivalent of saying you want to use an iDevice without the app store.

Memory needs > any update
I have a very good reason for not wanting auto-upgrades. Radio Shack misled me about the HTC Wildfire S and now I've got jack for memory. I have four apps installed, use only the native message app, and I'm lucky to have 25mb free. Anything less than that and the phone works as well as the Pony Express does today.
FWIW, Tandybot told me I could always install apps on the SD card. In theory, yes, but so few app devs code apps to work in that manner. Lesson learned.
kite edit: SNIP! No need for that kind of attitude around here, I'm afraid.
