[Q] KG2 Firmware upgrade in India & Rooting after that...Help! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all! Can anyone clear the following doubts I have about KG2 firmware:
1. Is this upgrade available in India through Kies yet?
2. Can users in INDIA upgrade to the new leaked KG2 firmware posted by Darky in the General section? Or will it change our CSC?
3. Do we need to download Darky's file (311.71MB), OR can we flash Intratech's stock kernel file for KG2 ( Kernel_GT-I9100_I9100XXKG2.tar which is 8MB after unpack) for upgrading to this new firmware instead?
4. After upgrading the firmware to KG2, which one of this two files from Chainfire to use for rooting this new KG2:
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip OR
CF-Root-SGS2_JP_XSG_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip ??
What is the difference between these two files? I'm guessing JP_XSG is for Japan, what is ZS_OZS for?
Waiting for your reply. Thanks

1- No.
2- Yes. Don't know.
3- Yes. No.
4- 1st one.
Regards.

Darkys firmware its not official firmware at all .

Thanks for your reply both of you. But barring the first point, they do not clear my doubts. I would appreciate if you can answer the questions POINTWISE. If you do not know the answer to all the points, then just answer the ones you know. But PLEASE answer according to the points I asked.
Thanks in anticipation.

@JJEgan : Good you edited your post. I was about to correct you that you were mistaken about Darkyy's KG2 leak not being Android 2.3.4 but 2.3.3.
I confirm that it is indeed based on Android 2.3.4 coz Darkyy's post title itself says : "[FIRMWARE] XXKG2 - Android 2.3.4 [ONLINE!]"
@ithehappy : Thanks for the revised pointwise answers. I appreciate. So you're saying I should use this file : CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip for rooting. But Intratech advised me to use the KG1 file in the other thread, without giving a reason why I should choose the KG1 file over the KG2 file of Chainfire. Another forum member replied there saying it's because CF's KG1 file has android 2.3.4 but his KG2 file has 2.3.3. But he doesn't seem to be sure about this and is only guessing.
So I'm still not sure which file to use for rooting the upgraded KG3 firmware and which CSC file to flash to restore the country version to India.

KG1 is 2.3.4, not KG2. For rooting you can use any kernel and then flash back the Stock kernel. But if I were you, then I'd flash KG2 kernel for rooting if you are flashing the KG2 ROM.
Besides, I'd suggest you to wait for the Official release in India.
Regards.

Hmm.....it makes sense to wait. You think the KG2 firmware update + Android 2.3.4 would be out via Kies by the end of this month (July)?

Well Samfirmware twitted that GB 2.3.4 will be officially released by the end of this month. China already got their 2.3.4 update, so I am confident that we will get it too, but with Samsung I can't guess a time frame I am afraid. All I can say, just wait for the time being.

[Q] Kernel versions and roms

Sorry if the question is really really simple in advance!
My phone is currently
Baseband - I9100XXDJ
Kernel - I9100XWKE2
Build - Gingerbread.XWKE2
Now i've seen the various insecure kernels and a couple of roms, but the roms mention xwke7. so am I able to flash with a newer kernel or do i have to stick on the same kernel i have now. will me moving from ke2 to ke7 do anything to my phone apart from just update the kernel?
What i had hoped to do was:
- install villianrom
- install the stock ke7 kernel to improve battery life (mine is dreadful atm, i barely get 10 hours out of it in standby!)
- have new rom with root access
would i be able to do this? the phone is on O2 with the O2 boot animation and i've read its possible to flash back to o2 image if needed?
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

You update the firmware not just the kernel its all in one package .

Yes but you need to have saved to O2 rom .
Luckily O2 original rom is posted in the dev section .
Gingerbread 2.3.4 is rumoured/fact to arrive by next week in which case i would not update to KE7 ..
You can mix kernels and roms even modems and roms but that would be your choice ..

thanks for the advice
so if i wait to update to 2.3.4 what options do i then have?
instead of starting a new thread thought i would post here.
I am wanting to root my SGS2 and have read through the CF-Root thread.
Im just a bit confused/aprehensive as to the firmware. My phone says -
Baseband: I9100BOKD1
Kernal version: BOKE3
do i have to stick to the same firmware for rooting so KE3 over KE3 or can i just use the KE7 firmware to gain root?
Thanks
Your chice KE7 is later firmware but 2.3.4 due anytime may pay to wait .

[Q] Question on firmware information

Hi ,
I am using SGS2 from Germany (unbranded)
My initial firmware for KE2 and I then flashed KF2.
My current phone config is
Code:
PDA : I9100XXKF2
PHONE : I9100XXKF2
CSC : I9100XAKF2
Ofcourse as always for me, Kies is not working for firmware upgrade (is it because i have it rooted?)
Anyway I was checking the fiwmare details on CheckFusdownloader and found out today that the firmware for Europe is
Code:
I9100XWKF3/I9100XEUKD1/I9100XXKE7/I9100XWKF3
After downloading the file, the TAR looks like this
Code:
I9100XWKF3_I9100XXKE7_I9100XEUKD1_HOME.TAR
My questions are:
1. How can I map the above with Phone / PDA / CSC etc?
2. Is this the new firmware than KF2?
3. IS it worth moving to this firmware?
4. Would I be able to root?
My battery life seems to be somewhat improved from KE2 to KF2.
Thanks
The newest kernel is KG1 Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Move to KG1. Forget KF3. everyone's on KG1. Fixes battery life and other things Google talk+video.
It goes in alphabetical order efg so G is the newest KG1.
and I am assuming they are in order
So PDA then Phone then CSC.
My CSC is UNKNOWN LOL, true fact.
Latest firmware is KG2 and thats 2.3.3.
KF2 is slighly older than KF3 .
KG12.3.4 is not a Samsung release its a leaked test firmware .
Root yes read the root post in dev section ..
My view wait for 2.3.4 to be released by Samsung for next upgrade if phone is working OK .
jje
1- As long as you are on stock firmware Kies won't make any difference, rooted or not.
2- AFAIK KF2 is the newer build than KF3 and the latest available for Europe.
3- Press *#1234# to see software info.
4- I'd say you should wait for official KG1 to be released. The current one is leaked and have bugs, so better avoid it.
Regards.

I'd look up Lite'ning rom 2.2 if i were you...
Roots your phone, KG1 and all in there. Also Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Works perfect for me. Why wait for the official update. Modders will implement it very fast.
Good luck!
If you change to KG1 dont bother flashing the CSC, use the one you have at the moment.
I am not sure if there is much advantage to that KF3 based rom over KF2, so if you are happy with KF2 and dont want to jump to KG1 (which is working perfectly for me, I dont use stock browser) I wouldn't bother.
Yes you would be able to root btw, just use the KF3 kernel from chainfire.
Thanks guys for your feedback
BTW whats with CSC what will happen if I mess with it? phone will get bricked? lets s say if I flash CSC from another country will i be able to go back to Europe CSC?
Is this only for language?
CSC is only a few text files and xml files with lists of networks etc .
Not really needed for phone to work and a new one can easily be flashed .

So that means i can flash any country's SGS2 firmware? Whats with baseband? have any info on that?
Baseband = modem/radio.
Yes flash any firmware and enter the networks APN manually as long as its on the same mhz it will work .
But if you flash Chinese firmware it will have Chinese keyboard etc .
PDA = firmware including kerel
Phone = modem/radio/baseband
CSC = country specifics with a list of local networks keyboard to use language to use etc .
Many firmwares are multi CSC say covering most of Europe .
jje
Thanks mate for the clarifications
one quick question. What happens if i try to update phone with multiple basebands?

You can't, the device can only have one modem at a time.
thanks infratech, I mean more of flashing one baseband and reflashing another version. sorry too bad in explaining

[Q] Problem upgrading from KI4 2.3.4 to KI3 Android 2.3.5

Hi,
I am currently using KI4 Android 2.3.4 and I want to upgrade to KI3 2.3.5.
I downloaded the firmware (but I think it was simply the stock kernel) from Intratech's post - "XXKI3 stock" and I flashed it using Odin, but it got me into a boot loop and thankfully I did a back up before in CWM4, but I had to re-install KI4, root it, go back into CWM4 to restore the phone. Again thankfully that worked otherwise I would have lost everything.
So... how should I be doing the firmware upgrade?
Also, should I download ZSKI3 instead of XXKI3? I know XX belongs to Europe, but where does ZS belong to? Does it even matter where it belongs to?
Lastly, if I decide not to use CyanogenMod, and I want to use another ROM or if I want to just simply use the stock version that came with the phone, what should I do?
Follow the instructions . Stock firmware thread .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
FULL FIRMWARE NOT KERNEL
ZS = China HK firmware .
Lastly, if I decide not to use CyanogenMod, and I want to use another ROM or if I want to just simply use the stock version that came with the phone, what should I do?
Dont make sense to me but if you want to use a rom you follow the given instructions likewise a stock rom read and follow the instructions .
jje
Thanks JJe!
I have another simple question, is there any problem with installing ROM on different firmwares? Because as I look in the forum, I have seen the ROMs having based on KI4, KI3 and so on... is it critical that I upgrade the firmware, then install the ROM?

No mostly is the answer rom modem kernel interchangeable in practice .
My preference if KI3 custom rom would be to install KI3 stock beforehand .

[Q] What Firmware to Flash?

Hi,
I have a Telstra (Australia) Galaxy SII with the version information :
PDA: DVKF4
Phone: DVKF2
CSC: TELKF3
I found the thread which contains the links to a number of different firmwares
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
There are so many version there, I don't know which is appropriate for my phone.
Telstra has not released an update and there seems to be no plans to do so. The phone is still at V2.3.3. Great network, crap customer service......
I would like flash the phone with a genric rom so I can receive updates.
Can anyone advise me on what ROM I should use for Australia?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
John

Charlie,
Thanks for your reply.
I found the Telstra section and I am still confused.
This is what I found:
Australia
DVKF4: http://www.multiupload.com/UAZPBM0XAS
Firmware info: PDA DVKF4| PHONE DVKF2| CSC:TELKF3
DVKF4 Stock Kernel:http://www.multiupload.com/91ID4RZEMO
Password: [email protected]
What is the difference between the downloads?
I assume the first link is the ROM I currently have in my phone. What is the Stock Kernel?
Regards
John
PS: I need an idiot's guide.

The first link includes the rom (stock im guessing) along with the second link, which is just the kernel.
Are you trying to flash a custom rom, or just official, because the download link rom is probably no different than the one you currently have on your phone. (if you havent flashed any rom yet)
If you are trying to flash a custom rom, I dont think any custom rom allows you to get the official update. (might be wrong)
I see.....
What I am looking for is an official generic ROM that is suitable in Australia.
I used to have an SE X10 before it died and I had a generic ROM flashed from the DaVinci site.
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 has a truck load of official ROMs and many Frankenstein ROMs which I assume are the custom ROMs.
My understanding is that if you flash with a generic ROM, you will get official ROMs when they are released by Samsung and you don't have to wait for your doppy carrier to provide a their cutomised version.
Is this correct?
Yes. If you flash one of those official firmwares from either of Intra's threads, you should be able to receive OTA updates via Kies. You can also use a PC app called Checkfus (search for it on here) to get official updates normally available via Kies (if you can't get updates via Kies for some reason).
P.S - For future reference, questions go in Q&A

Dont flash the Frankenstein firmware then:
+++++++[Frankenstein Firmwares]+++++++
These packages below are not official firmware packages, they are Frankenstein package created due to demand for Firmware with different CSC and modems and also leaked firmware packages. KIES will not recognise the firmware so you won't be able to update to new firmware using KIES unless you flash back to a firmware meant for your device first. Otherwise there will always be Odin to use for updates

[Q] Galaxy S2 DVLB1 Root Request

Australia's biggest telecommunication provider Telstra have recently released (after much delay) an update to Gingerbread 2.3.6 for the GT-I9100T, however after much searching i have been unable to find a rooted kernal for 2.6.35.7-I9100DVLB1, Could someone please help me and the many Australian Telstra GS2 users gain root access?
Cheers,
You won't get a CFRoot or insecure kernel made posting in Q&A. Post in the CFRoot thread, attach a copy of the LB1 stock kernel to your post & ask Chainfire nicely if he'll make one. Don't hold your breath tho, might be a while.
You can use Hellcat's kTool to dump your kernel (zImage) to your internal sdcard, grab a copy of this zImage, label it properly (call it LB1 stock kernel or something), zip it up & attach it to your post in the CFRoot thread.

just released ??? they have ICS as latest according to checkfus
I9100TDVLP4/I9100TTELLP2/I9100TDVLP3/I9100TDVLP4
your best option is try any cfroot closer to yours and check.
if it fails you can flash the whole rom again using Odin, its available at sammobile.
other option is if you want to remain branded, flash the old 2.3.3 / 2.3.5 rom root it using zergrush or cf-root.
install mobile odin and flash this rom with root option
