i realize someone posted something close to this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140313) his instructions are somewhat vague and he lists a bunch of software that you'd have to pay for or you don't need. and actually i've found that the free stuff works better in this case (hint: don't buy wondershare video converter ultimate unless you want to waste your money and end up with something not even close to 3d). also he doesn't say how to properly offset the images to get a 3d effect which is absolutely necessary. so this is sort of for people who are new to this phone or just have had trouble figuring out how to convert 2d to 3d.
that being said, let me say that you can't REALLY convert 2d to 3d... it will look somewhat 3d, but in order to get a real 3d image coming out at you, you need to have two separate images taken at two slightly different angles (hence the 2 cameras on the evo 3d) however it will look pretty close because we can offset it. i dunno the proper terminology because i knew nothing about this stuff a week ago so bare with me.
we will do photos first ....
download stereophoto maker here:
http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/file/stphmkre434.zip
you do not need to install it because it is a single executable so just extract from the zip and run it.
go to file>open left/right images, then go to the picture you want to convert to 3d and click it. then it will make u pick another picture for the right, just pick the same one again.
now go to the top and click on "adjust" then click "easy adjustment"
now above the picture is the H. Position adjustment bar... in order to imitate the two side by side cameras like our phones have we are just going to adjust this a little... i don't know if it matters much but my right eye is my dominant one so i move the adjustment bar (which should be centered) to the left. move it to the left until you see both blue and red images, don't worry you won't need red and blue glasses it's just showing you the two separate overlaying pictures... don't drag it too far or your eyes wont be able to focus on the 3 dimensional picture after you get it to your phone (you will just see two pictures and won't be able to quite focus on either if you do it too much). i usually do it to around -40.
after you get something you are comfortable with then go to file, save mpo file. move the saved mpo to your sd card, i don't know if it matters but i always put mine in /sdcard/dcim/ then you should be able to unmount ur phone or put ur sdcard back into it and find the 3d picture u made in your gallery.
now for videos
download stereomovie maker here:
http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stvmkr/files/stvmkre121.zip
its more or less the same process, im just doing some testing now trying to figure out how to save it...
edit: figured out the video... after you get done with everything the same way i explained above (opening left and right, which should be the same since we are converting 2d to 3d, and going to easy adjustment and displacing the image with the bar above the video display) you want to go to file and save stereo movie, then create your file name and hit save, then it will ask about compression, don't leave as full compression, i changed it to microsoft 1 and that seemed to work for me.
after your video is done it will be in .avi so remember to convert it to .mp4 (hamster converter is free) and then you will have to re add the audio track using avidemux (which is also free)
attached is a mpo picture of a mustang from this last years detroit international auto show, i used the exact method i explained above to make it.
Bro. THANK YOU. Your work is hella appreciated. Looking forward to more info. Im one of those people that just never learned and converted my VHS library to DVD and then upgraded from DVD to BluRay so i have an extensive library. I tried the other doods instructions (suggestions) in the other post u refered to and after 16 hours and still no watchable movie it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth ya know? I'm staying at the hospital right now cuz my son was just born. As soon as I get home tomorrow I'm gonna try ur tutorial. Ill let u know how it turns out. Again thanks this looks promising.

im not trying to do all that. im trying to keep it possible with free software only, besides i doubt a depth field would really make a significant difference without a second angled picture. and my 3d pics look great and appear to have depth compared to their 2d counterparts, the ones i made with my simple method above i mean... i'd be more than happy to post one if you'd like. they are pictures of the detroit international auto show from last year so u know i didn't take them with the 3d camera on the phone.
also i figured out the video stuff. ill add to my original post.
Total Processing Time
Hey how long did the process of fully converting a movie to be watchable on 3VO take you? Total start to finish.
This worked okay with pictures - better than pressing the 3D button on my phone, so I figured would look better for video conversion too.
When I follow the steps you mentioned for video conversion using the Microsoft Video 1 compression, it does convert the file but took a 6 Mb AVI file and converted it into a file over 150 Mb.
This is no good if I want to convert a whole movie to 3D, it would eat up my entire hard drive and the quality seems poor also.
Does anyone have any better settings to convert it with 3D?
Cheers

Right then, who else has noticed this? I'm presuming its an issue with the sync?
My contacts are stored with Googlemail and are set to sync, which is good as it saves me manually doing it and I usually change business contacts details so its nice that it updates on its own.
I link the contacts to facebook, pictures come over, look perfect (well, alright).
Later on, the pictures look awful and I'm presuming its because they are sent to Google and then sent back to the phone in a lower quality.
There were similar issues with the Touch HD syncing with Outlook and nobody found a way around it, anyone got any suggestions?
Nobody else noticing that their contacts pictures are really poor quality? Is it just me having this issue?

Me too...
No you are not alone.
Not alone
You are not alone, I presume that there is some kind of loss in the sync to make it work faster, I havnt seen any setting to make it lossless.
When I saved a picture from facebook and added it manually the was no loss in quality.
So until there is some kind of app out I guess you will just have to manually add the pictures if you cant live with the quality.
I sync with Outlook and its the same.
I do remember when i had a HTC Touch Diamond that was the same. The way you cured the problem was to take a photo with your phone to use as a contact picture and then it was full quality. To be honest not tried it with the Hero yet maybe a task for today for me..
Same problem here.
Hope they solve it in a future update.
Its the same with me, on my Diamond I created small high quality pics for my contacts & even with these the quality is crap.
On a side note is anybody else thinking that XDA Developers isn't the place for us & our hero handsets? I'm feeling a little bit unloved

haha, ok...
Root gives you access to all of your phone and should allow you to flash new roms onto your phone.
HardSPL is used on phones and if you have hardspl, again, you can flash new roms.
TP2 is the Touch Pro 2, just another phone.
Basically I was trying to say the phone is new out, and usually when they are it takes a while for people to come over to them, but they do eventually. When more and more people come on board, there will be a lot more support.

You know what I think I need to make a retaction & clarify how I feel about the XDA Developers site & the hero. Both the comments of nicelad_uk & liamhere are totally spot on & it was silly of me to expect the amount of expert knowledge on the hero that I enjoyed with my previous winmo devices.
I realise now that this could be my time to shine & put something back into this community instead of just taking like I was accustomed to before. Now obviously its been established that my knowledge is a bit lax on the software but where I can help I will & hopefully the increase traffic & hel will bring more people to this part of the forum.

Haha, trust me, if you asked my girlfriend, she would say the opposite!
I started putting back into the community with my Touch Pro 2, recreating a theme which I loved on my Diamond but wasn't available, it was a good feeling.
Now I'm making apps for Android, nothing big, just getting used to it and trying different things.
And no problem with the help, we all try to help and its good to see a mod using these devices too, other people will follow shortly, when they see the light
Contacts Image quality
I have the same bad images quality in contact also. Even when i had my Touch HD. I sync with Outlook and even set the contact photo from the phone but when a call comes in or is made to the contact its all blurry. Any ideas?

That warms my cockles, does that! I feel just the same so I'm trying to help where I can (Not totally altruistic, just its summer break and I have time on my hands)
On the point of poor quality pics in the call window, I think what is happening is that the fone is grabbing the little Thumbnail created for the contacts, not the original pic. The thumbnail then looks like Sh** in the big call window.
Not a solution but could be a reason.

This issue is usually to do with the Sync, its been a common problem with Syncing with Outlook and google from Windows Mobile Devices. I posted a comment about poor picture quality on Google's forums and one of their development team said they would look into it, that was nearly 3 months ago though.
Can't think of anyway round it! Very annoying though. Auto Sync off for me I think.
I think everyone should go to the google forums and reply to this thread...

hey mates, i think so to,when the people gets their hands on this wunderfull device, the development will be started ... mine arrives in 3 days ... cant wait for it ....
Anyone found a fix for this problem???
Since we now have an experimental USB Host app...
I just saw the second request for this so I thought I would post it here where people could find it easier if they so desired.
If any of you use a Nook and a DSLR, this may be the app for you. I found it on DPreview. It is early in its development, but works with my 50d.
http://www.anthonymandra.com/RawDroid/.
What it does is convert RAW images into jpeg previews. These are high res. so they will take a lot of space.
Note, you cannot browse to a file and try to decode it, you must go to a folder. The process for using this to transfer photos is large right now, and the workflow for doing in the field work even larger. One goal of mine this summer is to streamline the workflow, but it is possible.
Now it looks like there really is no reason to buy an iPad.
Have fun,

Funny, i was looking at this today, for the same reason you were. My big question, is what RAW formats are supported? I did some quick looking, but didn't actually see a list anywhere...
I know for a fact that cr2 (Canon) is supported. I also think nef (Nikon) is as well. Apparently, it does not do too well with Minolta files. However, Sigma is good.
I am not sure about the fuji or pentax ones. He is trying to support all of them, and I think his model is dcraw, but I am not sure. Just a guess. My best advice is grab it and try it. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you too.

Cant say i am horribly impressed with the program so far. The website has NO documentation, and i have no idea if it is doing what i want it to.
I have a test file in a specific folder, and i click it and tell it to decode files in this folder. I see the thumbs, and i can click on them to get a bigger image. But i cannot zoom the image, nor do i see any JPGs in the folder when i check with root explorer. Perhaps it doesn't like Sony Raws (not Minolta)? I wouldn't know, because the author has **0** documentation...
EDIT: and this time, a 1/4 res JPG showed up... no clue what i did different. Again, there is no documentation or anything....
I feel you frustrations in the initial release. Keep in mind this was not intended for public consumption. My goal was to get the functionality in place, queue some interest, and utilize some desperate android folks as testing guinea pigs.
I now have much of the functionality in place and put it on the market. The interface is greatly improved, and shortly will be fully automatic. Many of your complaints are already implemented/fixed.
I invested every moment of my free time to pull this off in the state it's in. Since I was changing everything rapidly, documentation would be a redundant effort I couldn't afford until now. I will be sprucing up the website, documenting the program, and offering a camera model self report page shortly.
You should check out the market version which is much more straightforward now.
(Also the 1/4 res thumbnail is what is stored in your raw type, I can do full decodes, but currently it's much too slow so I haven't released it yet)

RcketScientist - Thank you for your info, and taking the time to comment. I think i was a bit too harsh (that way was particularly stressful), and i should have been a bit more lax. As it is, I know it is not easy to start on something like this from scratch, so i do applaud your efforts. The 1/4 size previews, while not perfect, are admittedly a good start, and hopefully full decodes will come (speed isn't an issue, if we have the ability to select per file).
Please accept my apology - i continue to look forward to your updates.

No problem, when I said I felt your frustrations I really did. The makeshift interface was driving me nuts too.
As it stands for the full decode I was going to have that done at the full view stage (menu>decode). That way the lucky folks (canon/nikon) whom have high quality thumbs don't have to wait if the thumb suffices. I'll follow that up with a preferences suite that will allow you to force a full decode with each full view.
When I said the full decodes were slow I meant really slow. I've seen some very fast but I've also seen inexplicable 15 secondish decodes. Until I can make it more reliable or at least understand the delay and throw in a progress indicator it's a liability to release.
The full decodes are also a lot more unwieldy (70+ MB for my 5dmii) and the built in android stuff is having trouble loading with them at the moment.
I'm about to move across country so things will slow down, but by mid July I should be settled and able to devote more time to finishing this up.
Samsung GX10 DNGs processed
Just a quick note: I had no problems decoding DNG files from the Samsung GX10 (sibling to the Pentax K10D) on the Nook Color w/ CM 7.0.3 & dalingrin's kernel.
I pushed 100 files through it with small embedded Jpgs and two at full 10mpix and all went well.
Keep up the good work - looking forward to your next versions!
If I were going to do this I would just do raw+ jpeg.. Converting on the nook seems a little silly.
Hi RcketScientist, I really appriciate your effort with the RAW decoding, I know it is not an easy task. We are working some time on porting dcraw library (probably as you do) to Android, so maybe I could give you some advice.

I don't think it's silly idea. Imagine if photographers could import photographs to tablet on site, present them to a customer and make selection with some editing. At home, they would synchronize the photos with Lightroom, for example. We talked to some professional photographers and they confirmed that it would be very helpful.
But if you want to do full-decoding, be prepared for hard coding and optimizing to make it work fast. I suggest to focus and optimize it only for dual-core devices, especially with Tegra processor, which has really good performance for this purpose.
Also, if you want to view the image, you should't write it to SD card, but keep the data in RAM. Reading/writing operations are quite slow and you can't optimize them much.
Now, we can decode the image to view on screen in about 3-6 seconds on Asus transformer, but we'd like to make it a little faster.
We plan to release some demo application in few weeks. The first final release is planned for the September / October and there will be functions like importing directly from camera, viewing and editing images, full decoding, synchronizing with Lightroom (with XMP files).
I will post the demo as soon as we finish it, and I will appreciate your opinions for new functions and features.

Sounds great. Thanks. I will stay tuned.

If you spend more than 10 seconds looking (which I did before posting), you'll see that the frames returned by google are either not available in the US, or not really compatible with the file format (without conversion) used by the 3D.
I guess this is a question best asked once people have had a chance to get some experience with the 3D, the picture format and available products.
I'll keep looking. If I find something that is workable with the 3D, I'll certainly share my results.

Edit: undisputedfb has noted below 1080P recording is possible, as well as playback through rock player. I have not tested this myself, I really do have to buy sqllite editor
I assume maybe because we are still using a beta rom that we don't have 1080P, but I was hoping to see it. Video playback on the atrix is not that great, and I am disappointed I am still not able to record/playback in 1080P.
Anyone know anything?

At the same time I understand some people will say who cares? but there are lots of other people that simply want the option. Figured it would be best to give them this info.

I care, and I'm sure plenty of other people care too since it was a factory feature that we have been waiting on.
Title and post edited, thanks guys. Would like to see Ken build this into his rom.
I believe this mod has been covered before, and you may have recordings that say 1920 x 1080, but I bet they are not what you think they are. If you record 2 videos, same length, same subject matter in both 720p and "1080p" I am betting the 1080p is at 24fps and has a smaller file size than the 720p which will be at 30fps. Use GSpot to compare both files.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079760&page=11
If you read through the linked page and following couple of pages you will see what was investigated, and the results.
I had a request to show what changing the build.prop to 1080 does, so here it is. The 1080p is not correct, but I do not know in what way. The following shows both files, and their relative file sizes. Videos were 10 secs long, same static subject matter, no audio. The 1080p file is 3.6MB smaller than the 720p file. This is a huge difference on a file this small.
1080p Properties
1080p File Size
720p Properties
720p File Size
Interesting findings. the weird part is that the old mod required a modded apk this one the simple change in the build prop does it. I think its more evidence that moto tried to do the 1080P upgrade and just couldn't get it right so it was abandoned.

It doesn't mean that. You never know if there'll be an OTA where something else is changed and they simply edit the build.prop along with the update. At least, I hope you're wrong.
I can't see them going back on their word, even if it's crappy...
sure i hope you are right, but as for going back on their word. try checking out the same spec sheet now. it doesn't list 1080p recording as a future update. only playback.

the old mod could be done the same way. only there you had to use the resolution spec og 1920x1080. they just made it easier
Thanks! I now have 1080p!

Take a look at my posts. What you have is not proper 1080p.
Something is missing because of the much smaller file size than 720p.
it is 1080p at a lower framerate. that is all. gspot is not the end all checker. there are too many variables involved in what true 1080p is, when in reality its a resolution
Done anyone know of any suitable way to capture video of running app on android device?
I've tried several
Capture apps (none reliable though, one said it was taking view, but did not store it, another was unable to start the service). BTW on a rooted dev.
Moto webtop (this really sucks @ 5fps)!!
Thinking about getting a phone grip, putting pu camcorder on stand over my shoulder and do the job. But what about screen glare from the phone? Anyone had any experience with these? Suggestions would be helpful if you've done that before.

Yep screencast. Brilliant app that can capture in high definition with sound and can add a pointer on screen so video viewers can see where your finger touched if you want them to.
Also the dev is regularly updating to add new features etcetera.

just tried screencast http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
I commend the development effort, it is step in the right direction. Features, limitations and usage is clearly documents, setting right expectations.
I for one right now will go back to camcorder

That's not the app we mean.
App is called screencast not android screencast and is on market. Its developer is media solutions.

Is that a tegra2 device? Not sure man. Here's a link to their support forum. http://www.google.com/url?q=http://goo.gl/YkqmM&usg=AFQjCNE6WM6A1iJQTxQUqLraRGzdd6v5SQ might be able to find some answers over there..
Edit: Yoda! You, is it?

actually tried it on two Moto atrix (Mb860 plat) and HTC Incred (desire plat) both @ 2.3.x builds
will give it another try this eve
if it works it will certainly beat garage lights, stealing kids play table 20 minutes trying to find camcorder focus on lit up screen , not to mention fat fingers
