Data speeds have been horribly inconsistent since I got it. I have had several AT&T 3G phones in the same locations I'm using the Atrix and I can say with confidence it's not just the network. In the same spot at the same time a speed test will tell me ~3Mbps down ~1Mbps up and yet it will be horribly slow surfing the web. I'll bench it again a few minutes later and the speed test page won't even load. Apps will complain of no data connectivity and then boom, all of a sudden it's back. The whole time I'll have a 4-5 bars of service and my wife's iPhone sitting right next to it has no problems. Many times I have to reboot the phone to get data service back. Sometimes the data speed is so good I think I left the wifi on. That rarely lasts however.
I have tried nearly every "ROM" and radio in the dev section. I'm currently running the latest AT&T radio and CherryBlur. Is the radio in this thing just a PoS? I was thinking of having it swapped anyway since the front facing camera is completely blocked with pocket lint.
I just got the Atrix as a company phone. I traded in my company iPhone 4 for it for a couple of reasons.
1.) I prefer android phones
2.) I have an upcoming trip to Europe and thought I would have an easier time using the Atrix over there than the iPhone.
3.) I have an android tablet that also has a Tegra 2 chip in it so I thought I could run of the of the games I got for my tablet on this phone.
4.) Both my personal and work cell phones were 3G phones.
After having it for only 2 days, I am not a fan. I noticed the crappy data speed and also have suffered the network not available errors.
I have a rooted Droid X as a personal phone and I absolutely LOVE it. I travel for business and pleasure and when I do I usually take both my work phone and personal phone and I consistently see I get a stronger and better signal from my Verizon Droid X phone. Even when I had the (AT&T) iPhone 4 (3G) I saw the weak signal and slow speeds.
Anyway, back to the topic of this thread. Yes, you're not alone. This Atrix is pretty disappointing being a "4G" phone and all. Last night while at home I tried watching videos from several sources on this Atrix. Fox Television, Hulu Plus, and Crackle all complained about "a network error" and would take forever to load a video if it didn't error out first and then it was really poor quality complared to what I experience on my old 3G Verizon Droid X. If that wasn't bad enough I even got the network errors popup when I would move around in the Market looking at apps and such.
I am planning on upgrading my personal phone to the Droid Bionic when it is released next month but alas that phone is not "global ready" so I will see what I can do with this Atrix once I get root on it just so I can have a "world phone" as a backup.

Admittedly, in other areas I've seen as high as 1 Mbps, but it's consistently bad in this area, even given an apparently strong signal.
I do not share your frustrations. I am on Bell in Canada and average 2 mbps down / 1 mbps up. That's blazing fast for Canada in my books!
Maybe flashing up the latest radio by kenneth (in dev section) may be of some help.

Huh???
Look in your settings/about phone and post what network type and radio version you have on there. You should certainly be on HSPA+ now with the rest of the US and probably world.
Is it the phone or the network? Just asking since I have both an AT&T phone and a Verizon phone and have noticed network and download speed issues and am really disappointed with my Atrix.

The network severely limits non-iphones. Same deal with HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse, etc. I can usually hit 3-4 MB/s down, 1.5 MB/s up. That's not 4G. It's not the Atrix causing this.

Ok, so I am convert from AT&T and my iPhone 3gs - One of the first apps I like to run is Speed Test so I can gauge what I should be getting - and on my iPhone I used to get 1300 or so K download, and 175 up.
I have run speedtest a few times today and in 10 tests I pull an average of70kbps download and 283up .... Someone please tell me this isnt normal .... Granted that we have a very cloudy day with rain here in Buffalo, but I cant imagine this is even close to what I should get in DL speeds?
in my office building i only get "yellow" for service and right now im getting 585 dl and 61 ul. outside is even better
4g i get 6703 dl and 1430 ul
much better than the 4g in here btw. i don't think i broke 2000 dl inside here, and my status never went above the grey color

Update your PRL. 01120 Should be good. If you don't get 01120, try updating it like 6 times in a row. Oddly enough, its how I got on 01120, which someone who's confused about who-the-man is, says it's biz only PRL. I'm not biz though, I was just sittin here and kept hitting update and it changed to it. Not sure if there's something in the system that allows it to happen or what.
With 4/6 bars on EVDO I'll get ~1500 down and ~800 up
WiMax 1/3 bars 4500 down and 1400 up (1400 is highest upload pretty much)
WiMax 2/3 = 7000 down
and 3/3 tethered = 13000
I stopped at the store and they said it more than likely all the activations, man where they packed, 3D phones going left and right (and some other models).
Also did the PRL update, didnt seem to fix anything ... Ill give them until Next week for these speed issues.

well coming from at&t 3g to sprint 3g is a 50% reduction in speed on paper. cdma is capped at 3.1mbps while gsm is at 7.2. one reason id switch to a more capable technology were it not for the data caps. but you are right, sprints 3g speeds need to be faster. i for one am dissatisfied with sprints 3g.

I've had 2.4Mb down and 1.1 up on EVDOA. Sadly only recently has the WiMax u/l been lifted to 1.5. 2.4Mb down on a cell phone is quite a bit. Granted it's more in the 1 - 1.5Mb range on average, what do you do besides youtube that you'd need more than that? Tethering? Most websites take longer for the phones to process than it does to download the actual content.
Well, I honestly cannot even stream music with the 60k Im getting. It skips alot.... I also used to do Netflix in my car for lunch (Connected to my LCD Screen). Im not looking for 2Mb or anything close, but I would expect anything around 700kbs to 1.2Mbs or so..

I had the same issue since Wednesday, couldn't get over 120kbps on 3G. Sprint had me redo the activation and it fixed my issues.
You'll need access to the data programming menu, so you have to have your MSL code. Type ##3282# in the dialer, then use your MSL as the password. Go to the data menu and then hit the menu key and click Restore. It'll re-run the activation, update PRL, then update firmware.
Hope it works for others.
3G speeds
I am also getting terrible 3G speeds. Highest I've seen thus far is 130kbps. I had the phone reactivated, restored the data profile and still no luck. I went into the Sprint retail location and they did say that since there has been so many activations and bandwidth usage today, the 3G speeds have been extremely slow. I am expecting these data speeds to rise within the next day or two otherwise its going back...

I am posting from Centreville, VA (Fairfax, Northern Virginia area) and I will add that my 3G speeds are horrid.
With full bars the Spider Man game stopped at like 15% download progress and kept failing....I certainly hope this is because of activations or else I will be going back to my Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile where I get 4G signal everywhere I go....unlike Sprint.
Sprint isnt exactly known for its fast data speeds. You guys are more than likely in an area with slower speeds, like myself.
I highly doubt that the data speeds are as slow as they have been within the past 24 hours. If that was the case, no one would have sprint....I am confident it will pick up.
I am also getting really slow speeds. This is my first time with Sprint, so I'm not sure if this is the norm.

slower then edge speeds? lol .. . my sister has the Evo and she gets about 1.2 mb at my house, i get between 3kbps-124kbps
I went to the Sprint store where I bought the phone and I was told phone data is not like Comcast, and that it can be spotty and sometimes give you 3kbps because it is not Comcast, and I'm welcomed to return the phone if I'd like.
Coming from verizon, in the new hampshire area. My service on sprint has been sub par with terrible download speeds. I hope things improve, because I really do like the phone.

.02 down and .01mb up... This phone is probably going back.
I had ATT for 5 years, last phones on our acct where the Samsung captivate & iPhone 3gs. Went to Sprint, got tired of not having unlimited data and wanted to stream media, they had a promo if we ported our lines they gave us a service credit (paid our ETF from ATT), and bought back our ATT phones for $120. Not a bad deal. At first just casually used the phones, wifi at home, and 3g/4g away from home. 4g is good if your outside in a good service area, avg speed tests 1-4mb, 3g, forget it. Their 3g seemed slower than ATT edge on a bad day.
I moved my "work from home" office upstairs in my house, and my wireless point is downstairs opposite side of the house. I'm had horrible wifi usage on my Samsung Epic phone, i used wifi analyzer and get about -75db, and my mac book pro gets about -69db. i would think that would be fine since my mac book still shows all its bars and i can get on the internet and it works fine. Speed test with my mac book shows 11.66 down/ 1.47 up and ping < 100ms; which is what i pay from my ISP. when i do the speed test on the Epic, i get less than 1mb down and less than 1mb up and pings over 100ms.
i tried a spare router i had in my closet, cisco 4 port and G router and placed it upstairs. Placed in bridge mode and it worked a little better upstairs. When i had my epic phone about 5 feet from it, i only had 2 bars. huh? i can walk all over downstairs with my uverse RG in my master bedroom closet and get all 3 bars, but when i go to my office, i barely get one bar and crap speeds.
i was thinking of re-locating my uverse rg access point upstairs and since i have a 110 patch panel downstairs, it would take me less than 10 minutes to re-locate, then i got to thinking, when i had my captivate & iphone, i never had a problem in my office with wifi.
what should i do here? i like to use my phone in my office when i'm working to kill some time, and since sprints 3g coverage is completely horrible, i'll use my wifi, but since somehow the wifi radio in that phone is complete crap. For the hell of it, i found a copy of 2.3.4 gingerbread and used odin to get the fw on my phone; but actually i received worse wifi speeds (if that makes any sense), so i rolled back to Froyo. I'm 2 seconds from throwing out 2 Samsung Epic phones on my account out the window and going back to ATT. I did a speed test on a Atrix phone at a electronics store and it received HSPA+ and it got about 4mb down; whereas my Epic got less than 1 with Sprint in the same location.
At first i would sacrifice slower 3g speeds from sprint, but when it doesnt even work half the time, 4g seems to only work outside at speeds of ATT 3g w/o HSPA+. so pretty much that unlimited data is they advertise is crap and i feel if i call in to complain, all they will tell me to do is update my PRL, fw and software and maybe submit a incident tkt for my slow speeds, but i know that wont correct it. With their current stand of possibly going to Light Squared for LTE from Clear Wi-max, that will maybe solve their 4g coverage in the distant future, but still stuck with sub-par 3g...

I recently downloaded speed test app on my wife's iphone 4 and my s2. Initially, my wife's iphone 4 blew mine out of the water. Her avg. speed was 9.0mbps whereas my avg. speed was a dismal, 0.50mbps. I then realized that her iphone 4 had the wifi on, where mine was turned off. I then turned my wifi on and recorded much higher results, avg. 9.0mbps. My quesion is, should I have to have the wifi on to gain these speeds? I thought the speeds the writers were refering to on the reviews were taken while working off the networkand not utilizing wifi. This is one of my main reasons I was considering returning the S2 for the iphone 4s but now that I can reach these download speeds, I'm considering keeping it. However, I'm still confused about the wifi having to be on. Can anyone please explain? Thank you in advance

Network coverage varies so much from place to place that no-one can ever promise you anything, regardless of provider or device. You'll get a better signal outside than inside, so take that as an indication of how unreliable data signals actually are. If you regularly have access to wifi then use that as much as possible. It's obviously faster and it's not part of your monthly usage so you won't get charged extra for using it. It obviously depends on where you live and how much wifi coverage you have. I know people that are nearly always within reach of wifi, both in and out, so they have good speeds all the time. I suffer from living in an area where the coverage isn't too good. I do occasionally get full HSPA+, but it's usually a couple of bars of 3G. No phone would change that though, so I have a phone I like, regardless of crappy coverage.
It will also depend on if they were connected to 4G as well. Being that it didn't say 3G or WiFi on the reports you saw it could have been 4G, 3G, or WiFi. I personally leave my phone WiFi all the time even though it is only connected when I'm at work or home. There is no 4G in my area so that isn't even a factor for me. The speeds do vary quite a bit when out and about being that it is only on 3G and the radio in the Epic Touch isn't the strongest and at times doesn't get signal where other Sprint phones do but that is the same with everything, you gotta take the good with the bad. For me it doesn't go so slow that it is unbearable but I do wish it would be quicker at times. That is deffinetly a downfall to having Sprint is the lack of coverage.

Since no one else noted it, the Sprint Galaxy S2 is not this phone (i9100), but the Epic 4g Touch. Which has a separate forum.
Also, if it isn't obvious, if wifi is on, then it will use your wifi connection. If not, it will use your phone carrier's mobile data network. If sprint is only giving you 0.5mbps on their "4g" network, then that's on sprint.
Am thinking about the evo 4g lte because I've read excellent reviews about the call quality. I already know I won't be getting lte in my area for a long time. Are the 3g speeds actually worse on this model as compared with other Sprint models ? (some reviews have claimed this)
My 3g is slow enough as it is on my HTC Touch (can live with it though), but won't be able to accept anything slower.

The ugly:
This is where the phone starts to fall apart for me. The network capabilities are awful. They are a clear downgrade from my Evo 4g. I live in Kansas City, and my old Evo 4g had both excellent 3g coverage, and excellent WiMax coverage. Ping times were the only problem I had with WiMax (typically in the 200-300 range), but I typically got 3-7Mbps down and ~1Mbps up with very reliable coverage, especially in my home. Outside of WiMax range, I reliably got 3g coverage that pulled ~1-2Mbps down and up. This is what I would expect, given that I am in Sprint's home market.
I upgraded to the Evo 4g LTE after hearing that LTE was officially "live" in Kansas City. Unfortunately the news that I missed was that by "live", they really mean "about 30% live". There is little to no actual LTE coverage in the city. At my apartment, where WiMax was previously very strong, I can only connect to LTE rarely, and when I do the signal is so weak that my connection times out regularly. Watching antenna strength, the LTE connection sits around -115 to -120dBm (in non-technical terms, that is just a hair above zero bars). I actually disabled the LTE antenna on my phone because it is disruptive FAR more often than it is useful.
"So what", you might say. "Just use 3g". I would agree with you. 3g should be able to get me by in the next few months while Sprint continues their LTE rollout, hopefully with an antenna near my home. Unfortunately the phone's 3g antenna is also highly problematic. 3g signal pickup is weaker than my old Evo 4g, and speeds are considerably worse than my previous phone. Pings usually sit around 200, which is acceptable, but I almost never get above 0.5Mbps down, or up. Additionally (and even more importantly), the phone has a habit of dropping the 3g signal. I tether often, and when I do I tend to lose 3g every few minutes. This is in close proximity to a 3g tower, and with a strong signal (4-5 bars, in the -70 to -80dBm range). The phone will just inexplicably lose 3g connectivity. Google around a bit and find out: this is a known problem that many people are dealing with, and HTC/Sprint have acknowledged the issue and are trying to rectify it. Problem is, it isn't fixed. I truly hope that in the near future an OTA update will fix the problems... after all, I'm basically stuck with this phone for the next 23 months. The network issues are bad enough that I really do miss my old Evo 4g, and I'm very tempted to reactivate it.
Conclusion: at the end of the day, the Evo 4g LTE is a phone, and as such I think the network issues are a pretty big deal. If you are on WiFi constantly, then they won't be an issue for you, but if you're dependent upon Sprint's network in any way, be very careful... this phone has some major baggage.
Update 9/25/2012: A couple OTA updates later, and it is still in pretty bad shape. I am very used to 500ms+ ping now, and 0.1Mbps download/upload speeds. 4g coverage is still nonexistant. According to xda and s4gru, this problem is SPECIFIC TO THE EVO 4g LTE. As in an iPhone 5 and SGIII will both connect just fine to 4g, but an Evo in the same room will not.
Try this neat trick: Go to craigslist and search for Evo 4g LTE. See how many nearly new Evos are being sold for less than half the price of a new one? That speaks more volumes than my review does

These post really make me scratch my head...In Memphis LTE is only a month old and only in the northern parts of the city...constant 15mbs+ and elsewhere 4g isnt on yet 3G is maxed out....I never have any problems maintaining a over decent connection on 3G.....it's just odd how much I hear how crappy the ELTE is.....Is it really a bad phone and I'm just in a city where Sprint has it act together or are some of you vice-versa??

My 3g has been much better than my old HTC Hero and better than my Dad's og Evo(not to mention my mom's Samsung Nexus S, My brothers' Samsung, Motorola, and my sister's iCrap 4s).
As long as you stick to stock based roms, you'll be fine. HTC has some great tweaks that cm10 and aosp roms don't have that seem to boost bandwidth and 3g speeds.

Test it out. Set a timer for 13 days just to be sure.. Thats why carriers give you the 14 day trial period to make sure your happy before being stuck 2 more years with them.
I for one am happy with my EVO LTE. I also have a GS3 and from time to time go back and forth.
I had a chance to spend about 3 minutes with this device today at the Sprint store. Love at first sight. I can't put into words how elegantly this phone felt in my hand.
Didn't have time to check out the 3g connectivity, but call quality did seem above average for a Sprint phone.
Can you download a larger format dial pad for this phone (that works properly) ?

This is a typical speedtest where i work with S4 vs my One.
As we know from my other thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451516 the S4 is a complete and total joke when it comes to voice recognition so I swapped it out for the One. The only problem I have with the One as the voice recognition is second to none, is the data speed. Some days it decides it's not going to pick up an LTE signal under any circumstances and some days it does but it seems that the download speed appears to bleed off to almost nothing as seen in this pic. No programs are running at the time I did the speedtest here and both phones ran their speed test separately.

I'm not having that trouble with my One. I'd take it back and get another. My LTE is usually around 20Mbps and I've had it as high as 37Mbps.
Something is wrong with your phone. While I wish T-mobile had better coverage, when I am in a good area I am getting fantastic speeds on my One.

While I don't have two tmo LTE phones, I did switch from straight talk and my tmo LTE is horribly inconsistent while the ATT LTE signal on the same phone is solid wherever I had reception. It also has a weird issue with speed test in particular where it keeps routing me to a server in Denver or Albuquerque even though the location services work fine.
Tmo hspa isn't great in my area but still more consistent by far. I may just switch back to straight talk even with the cap as I have zero issues on ATTs LTE network and don't stream anything other than music. The phone is by far my favorite, even compared to my friend's N4 (the camera and screen spoil you, and I can't see feeling the need to upgrade for a few years now that I have a camera I'm satisfied with)
edit: t-mo LTE is -103 inside or out, ATT LTE is -88 with excellent and consistent speed (ping is a bit higher at 240 as prepaid often is, but that's fine for everything I do). And it's certainly not an issue of grip, as I actually get better ATT LTE while holding it than setting the phone down
