So guys I posted a thread a week ago or so saying I was gonna return my 3vo for the GSII.
Well I've decided I'm keeping my 3vo!!
Mostly due to the fragmentation of the galaxy s phones, it took a while for some quality roms for my Vibrant and I believe the development team for the 3vo will be much better.
Say a dev. gets a galaxy s II phone, the one on sprint vs AT&T vs verizon will all have different stock roms on them to suit their carriers. Also I had a terrible experience with touchwiz and that crap with my galaxy s. I don't like sense but I do think this phone will be the best, until I can buy the new nexus phone.
Great?

Well mine is going back on Tuesday.I won the free test trail of the photon and i have to keep it for 45 days then i can do as i want it.I should have it monday or tuesday and i already have my return kit for the evo 3d so back this thing goes.
Then i will hold onto the photon for 45 days in which time the best phone should be out the SGS2 which has no BS about s-off.
I am so tired of all the BS with the s-off of the 3D that back it goes.People claim to have it show a youtube video of it then nothing.
You guys will have it from HTC but i am really turned off by this phone. The screen looks really no different from the EVO and when you get in any light you can't see anything on it just like the EVO.
AND ON EBAY THEY ARE SELLING NEW NEVER USED FOR $325-350 which is only $100 over cost if you have a upgrade.
People are dumping this phone at a very large rate and the price has sunk way faster then the EVO ever did.

I never say much on these forums ..but really, wtf is the point of this sh*t? You've posted almost the exact same post in two threads. Are you trying to make other people share your unhappiness with your phone? Are you hoping someone will change your mind? Are you hoping someone cares? Are you 12 years old? Christ..return your phone and move on to something you can be positive about.

Have fun with white spots on the screen, yellowing screen due to overheating, Samsung defective gps (TM), disastrous battery life. Don't worry, I've been to Samsungland, flashing everything under the moon in hopes of fixing their broken device, you will have a fun time.

Should we go on about all the dead pixles the 3d has had? or maybe all the ober heating as well. And hey some people are on there 4th evo 3d already. Please you are making this phone out like it has no problems.
Most all of the problems you listed the 3D has them as well.Ive had mine for 32 days now i know the good and bad about it.Thankfully when you ask them to send you a return kit the day they send it to you is the day that is counted as you sending it back to them so i am still in my 30 day window.
And if they do not pan out i can always go back to the 3D and by then Alpha and HTC will be done playing the S-OFF game.

All new smartphones have issues, get over it. Samsung is simply, by far, the worst about their POS phones having both hardware and software problems.

3vo is good even without s-off
I'm just as upset as everyone else about the fact that we don't have s-off yet, but when I actually stop and think about my 3vo I am very pleased with it. It is fast, It is reliable and frankly it does everything I ask it to do very well. Many times, better than my Evo did. That is including the fact that my Evo was rooted, overclocked and running Cyanogenmod 7, nightlies, and other roms.
In fact, sometimes when I rebooted with new roms I got a really scary black, color barred screen. It freaked me out a few times, but never broke. I guess what I'm trying to say the only things I really miss are the little customizing options I was able to make with the aftermarket roms.
But I'm no genius developer. I am grateful for the work they are doing on our behalf. Thank you!

1.) Very concerned about call quality and battery life. I remember when the OG evo came out, the battery life was pretty bad. It wasn't until I purchased a higher capacity battery on ebay, and rooted the phone that I was happy. I have a feeling the e3d is going to have the same initial problem, even though they upped the battery. If you throw in bad call quality, which has been fairly consistent among the reviews, those are two big strikes against the phone IMO.
2.) I know the 3d feature is just an "added bonus", but in my book it's just a gimmick. I don't see myself using it all that much, and most reviews say using the 3D really kills the battery. Plus I think it takes away from the "sleekness" of the phone. I heard someone say it looks like Johnny #5 from Short Circuit on the back of the phone, and I have to agree. Not visually appealing to me at all. Plus, I'll be constantly worried about scratching them as well, since they seem to protrude out much further than any camera I have seen. The 2D camera quality seems to be the same as my OG evo anyway. I wish they would have just put a higher quality 2D camera on the phone.
3.) I'm not that big a fan of sense. I've been running cyanogen for quite some time now, and forgot how much better it is than sense. I picked up my gf's evo the other day, which is still stock, and it was painful to use compared to CM7.
4.) I think the OG evo is still a damn good phone. Why would I want to use my upgrade and get stuck into another two years if I'm not 100% sure I want this phone? I know sprint has the 30 day return policy, but why go through that hassle initially? I think it's wiser just to wait and see how things play out for the first month. I'm not sure if the bootloader is unencrypted at this point? Sure, HTC said they will unlock it, but when?? 1,3,6 months from now?
I'm still very happy with CM7 on my evo at this point. The development on this phone has been amazing. I have android 2.3.4 with the honeybread theme. It looks slick, just as good as my transformer tab, and battery life is exceptional. I get 16 hours with moderate to heavy usage.
5.) If this was sprint's only powerhouse phone coming out soon, sure it would probably more of a "no-brainer" on getting the e3d...but with the Photon and most likely the SGS2 coming soon, I think I'll wait and compare the three phones before I make any decisions. In the meantime, I'll still be happy running my OG evo w/CM7.
I think the bottom line is I'm not going to jump on board just because this phone is the "new" thing. I'll practice some restraint, keep checking out XDA for the first couple weeks and see how things play out. I have a feeling there won't be a shortage for the e3d like there was for the OG evo.
As many people have said its pretty much your personal preference.
As for me I have already preordered it on wirefly, can not wait for some reason I don't see my phones battery being really all that bad as reviewers say.
I will sign another two year contract because that plan I am on is cheap! and love sprint service!
Thanks for that. Are you going to go on every phones forum and let us know why you're not getting those as well?

Just seems strange that you've chosen to go onto a phones forum and say why you're not going to buy it.
Why choose this phone to do that about?
Did you do the same for every other phone approaching launch date?
seems like a very strange thread to start

I don't understand why that is so strange? A forum is for giving opinions...right? I'm giving my opinion on why I'm holding off on purchasing this phone on launch day. Did I say I will never get the phone? No. It seems with certain people, anytime you criticize this phone, people want to brush you aside for some kind of idiot. I'm just not sold on this phone yet, and I'll even go out on a limb and say it probably won't be nearly as successful as the OG evo. Just my opinion though!!

Actually this is a forum for developing stuff, hence the name xda-developers.
If that's the case, then why have an Evo 3D GENERAL section, and an EVO 3D Android Development section? If it's all about development, why not just have the EVO 3D Android Development, and that's it? I've seen maybe 1-2 threads in the GENERAL section that actually deal with "development".

Of course it wont be as successful as OG EVO. It's going to be a while, before sprint has another phone like that! When they finally drop a LTE phone, with the same top of the line range in phones they currently are putting out. That 1st one to hit will be there best shot, whatever the phones may be at that point. Untill then we are getting HTC, Samsung, and not Moto all trying to draw from the ground breaking EVO.
Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one!!!

Also, I couldn't get into the bootloader and I tried everything. In fact the phone wont start until you release the power button. So its locked for now. But the screen is amazing. I love it. Beautiful. The 3D is sweet and the viewing angle is decent no issue. Battery life isn't bad either. They had it off hook all day and playing with it 50% charge.

I just checked out one at best buy and just wow.......It makes last years evo look old. It really is that nice.
One thing though has me very concerned, Seems the unit they had only had a 2GB micro SD card. I also read in the online manual that it only had a 2GB micro sd loaded. This is getting scarry, seems sprint may have pulled a bait and switch.....lets hope not........

I doubt that. I haven't even seen a 2gb MicroSD card since last year. 8gb are definitely the highest volume sales right now...and also likely highest volume in manufacturing...and if it does come with the 2GB? So what? I got an 8gb card identical to the one that came in my Evo4G at Radioshack a few weeks ago for rooting a NookColor....$12.99? Less? I don't remember, cuz it was that insignificant of an expense.
That's not scary, relax guys. What is scary is me considering not renewing my license or reregistering my truck until I get this phone, lol....

FINALLLLLLY GOT TO PLAY WITH IT! my Sprint rep was in our stores tonight and i finally got to spend some time with it and WOW im impressed. the screen is amazing, i dont know were these shabby reviews about the screen looking washed out and dim due to the parralax screen came from, it looks stunning, its fast as can be, it feels great in your hand i like how its a tad bit lighter. The dedicated camera shutter button is not only nice looking but totally awesome i loved not having to mess with the screen to shoot a pic...
NOW for 3D, damn! the pictures especially of the one up a few posts and then the water pier pic look freaking amazing, the 3D isnt so much jump at you as it is depth perception kind of view and imho its really really cool, the screen does dim when switching from 2 to 3D but really? who cares! the pics themselves look great, the 5 meg cams still take gorgeous pics! the 3D videos are definitely slick!
Now an issue about the 3D spider man game, tested it out, its pretty cool, BUT when i exited it and went on with regular stuff in sense the screen didnt want to re-Render so it kept getting all fuzzy, it may just have been the game staying going without killing it or the such but just a soft reset fixed it.
All in all it was awesome and im super excited to be getting it in three days..
as for the S-ON bl'er it wont take our boys and gals here much time to fix the issue =)

It's only dim 'cuz each eye gets half the pixels reflecting half of the backlight... it isn't actually dimmer so much as perceptually dimmer...and we could spend all night arguing over whether or not that can be taken to mean 'actually' or not...but I digress

Not what toast says. It is only "dim" in 3d mode. 2d and it goes back to normal brightness.

Suggesting that the back-light goes from 100% to something lower? Perhaps they might do that to keep "cross-talk" from having left and right channel information bleeding to the wrong eye....
...though I'm sure most brightness loss is due to, well, 50% of the pixels no longer being visible by the other eye then again they probably would have compensated for this knowing it would happen.....
god damn, I can't wait to find out all of this for myself.
Nice, I can't wait to get mine on Friday. Sprint was nice and did a free early upgrade. They have a couple out on display at the sprint store by me and I had the chance to goof around with one for about 35 minutes. Definitely a big upgrade from my HTC Hero and the 3d doesn't hurt my eyes like the Nintendo 3ds. Still contemplating the sprint coverage on it or not. I would hate to drop my phone and have to pay $200+ for a new one. I'm not sure what they charge for a new screen but hopefully I never have to find out.
Does anyone know if they will offered in black and white?

S-On doesn't mean encrypted... The EVO 4G was S-On and it was rooted with the quickness.

You have to exit the spider man game via the back arrow in game interface.. I believe the phone stays in 3d mode because the game is still running in the background. Had that same problem myself!

Guys all 3d displays dim when they are in 3d mode. remember its 2 pictures so its gonna darken some. My 3d tv does the same thing when i use the 3d.
Comments about the dimming for 3d make me wonder if they ever used a 3d display at all then they would know.

your like 5% of the population that owns a 3d TV. So how would anyone know by experience that it is supposed to dim a little?

It's been posted multiple times that the devs have the eng [engineer] bootloader.
I'm not saying I'm 100% positive they really do and can root it the first day, I'm just putting what I've read out there
Hello,
I honestly do not start many Threads, but after reading many 3D and Photon 4G Reviews, it really seems like many Reviewers have some unwarranted bone to pick with the 3D.
Could it be that this time the 3D's were not given away for free at a Google Conference? All I know is that the 3D improves upon the excellent 4G in every way, yet there have been several less than complimentary Reviews of the 3D.
With the 4G, countless Reviewers griped about the Battery Life. Now with a much larger Battery, Sense 3.0, a huge amount more Storage, and a qHD Screen, the 3D has received many less than complimentary Reviews whereas the Photon 4G has garnered almost uniform positive Reviews.
It just does not make sense. The 3D addressed almost every complaint about the 4G and it still has received mixed Reviews.
All I can say for those who are Exchanging their 3D for a Photon, enjoy having zero Developer Support, a Bootloader that might never be unlocked, and Motoblur.
Cheers,
JJ
I agree every review I've read has made me want to punch the reviewer in the face at least twice. My only complaint is the new aspect ratio, I've got big hands though so this prolly isn't a general gripe.
I noticed that too. Not only do I see a lot of negative reviews, but having owned my 3d since release day, it seems like the negatives they talk about are all bull. Bad battery life? I use mine quite often during the day and as long as I charge it at night, I know I can use it all I want and will be fine until I go to bed the next day. The things they praise the Photon for are either exactly the same on the 3d, or better, so I don't get it.
I think people are bashing the phone solely because it has 3d, even though the phones a beast even if you never use it once.
I'd be curious to see links to reviews, as most I have seen are relatively neutral.
I was initially concerned with the reviews too, but after having the device for a while I can very honestly say that you can safely ignore them. Most of these reviewers are a bunch of blithering morons anyway, especially Myriam Joire of Engadget. That idiot is convinced that the Evo 3d is made of cheap materials, a worse camera than the Evo 4g and that 3d is a terrible curse that will damn the Evo 3d to hell no matter how good of a phone it is without the 3d feature.
All the guys who criticize the 3d feature seem to forget that 3d or not, this phone is a beast. Now with S-off and root, I can't wait to crush all the other phones

I think the battery life is very impressive. Far better than my Evo 4g ever was(mostly).
XDA should have device reviews, maybe we could get some unbiased reviews, well maybe not. But they would be biased to us at least!
Hello,
I am glad I was not imagining things, I definitely take Professional Reviews with a grain of salt,As for some of the Reviews I speak of, PC Magazine, Engadget, and I will come up with others in the Morning as I have been up since 5 AM Monday,
Cheers,

Well they expect a big leap from 2010 evo 4G and since most of them have play with the Samsung galaxy s 2 they think the evo 3d should be much more, besides specs and the gimmicky 3d "like they call it" and there is no way to beat 4G and 4.3inch screen anymore so there is not way it will score as high as the evo 4G, i'm happy with mine so far
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
Root was achieved on the photon today .
I have the photon. There are many things I like about this phone that i didn't like about the 3vo. (owned one for a couple weeks). I'm still within my 30 to make my final choice 3vo or p4g. For me, it comes down to the developing community and if I really mod that much. I mean on my OG I found a rom that i liked and didn't really have an interest in any others for the rest of the time I used it. But everyone is different and that's why we have choices.

The thing I love most about the reviewers and everyone saying they wont buy one because 3D is a gimmick...
...you all realize that you aren't being charged extra for the 3D feature right? You don't have to use it at all... You know that right?
So they all would have gladly paid the same 199 to omit the 3D feature? But throw that in for free and its no longer worth it?
That logic doesn't compute..
Example:
Seller:"Hey, this new bad ass phone has a dualcore, qHD screen and 1GB of RAM!!"
Buyer:"Whoa. Awesome"
Seller:"And it comes with a free case!"
Buyer:"What? I won't ever use that...nevermind I don't want it...that's dumb"
Are we not Phones?
We are EVO
ARE WE NOT PHONES?!
3.Dee.V.O.
Agree, I was a little apprehensive before buying mine due to the negative reviews but can now say there was a lot of unwarranted criticism.

I think its because of expectations really. Everyone wanted to see a huge increase in everything(when there really is) but no one seems to notice because the EVO was such a beast. I would say its getting the same reviews as the iPhone 3gs did when it came out to the 3G. But **** all the bad reviews this **** is a BEAST!

Ya I agree, I was really gonna hold back on getting this phone but after owning it for 2 weeks so far I love it. The reviews aren't all bad but the cons they try to come up with are ridiculous. I think the one I remember the most is one of the reviewers tried to say "the power button" annoyed him...haha seriously? The power button was a big issue on the 3D ? Sometimes I think they just want to make up negatives to feel powerful.

haha, the power button annoyed me for the first couple of days. It was just too easy to press. I've gotten over it.
Another thing that bothered me were the sensitivity of the capacitive buttons. (My last phone was the TP2, so i don't much about how its suppose to be)
I've gotten over that as well.
The only thing that bothers me now, is the charge port is on the bottom when watching videos in landscape. If someone knows how to change that, lmk, thanks.
So after close to 2 months of EVO 3D in everyone's life, I have a few questions. First, for all those who had the EVO4G,and now have EVO 3D. Do you feel like it was well worth it leaving the old and going with new. If you were at the Sprint store or wherever you got EVO3D, would you do it again? Second, does all the new features really make a difference that you've noticed? Does the 3D feature live up to its hype? Lastly, would you suggest to someone else that they should get one if they asked you your opinion? I said that I wouldn't really make the decision to switch until a permanent root for the 3D. Thanks for any and all opinions.
Its definately a good trade up..Everything is way better than the original..super fast..better screen and the 3d element is actually cooler than u would think..plus the development on the ev3d is great!!Definately would make the same choice and i recommend to everyone!!!

The only thing I miss is the aspect ratio. This one is a little bit more narrow...however the resolution difference is FANTASTIC and more than makes up for how narrow it is.
At first I kept my E4G 'just in case'...then I brought back my E3D, got an NS4G to play with and within one week brought that back and was so sure that the E3D was as good as I now know it to be that I traded in my E4G so my E3D only cost me like $12....and that was hard, I *loved* that E4G, a truly remarkable phone. It was like a close friend to me....but it wasn't hard for technical reasons it was for sentimental. But that thing might as well have been in a fncking wheelchair compared to the E3D....and now we have the development community that should be more than reassuring to anyone doubting that same 'magic' will be there...we've got netarchy! We're getting CM for certain and that means also MIUI....Synergy...hell, even Joeykrim of Moment fame...it's all good....and trust me, I wasn't always convinced...ask anyone here how much I pissed all over everything skeptically...I'm 110% now though, it's hard not to be.
I'd say it was definitely worth trading the 4g in for 150 to put towards the 3d

JKDLBC...Yes, It is all that good!
I kept my E4G as well "just in case". I didn't think I could love a phone as much as I loved my E4G. I sold it two days after I got the E3D. Just get it. You WON'T be disappointed!

It's not all good. The 3G radio sucks, strength wise...and the 2nd time I bought an E3D I went through a stack of like 5 or 6 phones, had them power them all up and I picked the one with the best signal....in a store where my E4G got max bars I got 2-less bars, which is shocking because there is a repeater in the store.
But I'm pretty sure that Sense 3.0 meters 3G radio strength (like CM which always hate notably lower 'bars' but same signal strength)....I do go roaming a lot more than my E4G, but I think that threshold is set in software, which is why I think I miss more calls (which are very very few...9 or 10 on my latest E3D in the past month)...but, I might have missed 2 or 3 in the year I had my E4G...and dropped MAYBE one on my E4G, I've dropped 8 or 9 on this phone.....but, since I flashed the eng/development 3G radio I have had the best data speeds ever (even better than my E4G) and haven't dropped anything...
It's not all kippers and biscuits man....my main gripe is the weak radio signal, but, after flashing that radio I'm totally cool with it....YMMV...but, god damn this screen is beautiful, the performance is amazing, the overclockability is phenomenal (spanks the E4G's weak OC ability, 1.8ghz all day every day)...killer battery life, even OC'd with no HAVS/UV kernels yet...
...and, seriously, ask around...I was hated around here for a week or two with all of the *****ing and moaning and skepticism I was pissing on everything and everybody....but, here I am...convinced....
just do it dude.

I sold my EVO4G two weeks after getting the 3d, even knowing that there was no root, I was happy and really didnt missed cm7 because of the speed of the 3d. Today, days after getting full root, netarchy kernel, virus roms, myn rom its cooking, miui and cm7 are on theyre way, I don't regret it, in not looking back neither forward to the upcoming GS2. I was in the same position as you. I had my beloved evo, had my upgrade come up then went to the sprint store and played with the evo 3d the ns4g and the photon. I liked the ns4g, and I would have got the photon if you didnt have to buy the $100 dock to root it. The evo 3d won me over, and with all the great devs here im just awaiting more great roms. Don't do it until 3G speeds improve. This data connection is pathetic. When I go side by side with my wife's OG EVO there is no comparison. Her data connection crushes mine. I'm talking about at least a solid MINUTE to download a 50kb attachment. I've been so busy that I didn't have a chance to return it until after 30 days had passed. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I've been to the sprint store 3 times and they swear up and down that there's nothing wrong with the phone. If a fix isn't released soon I'm jumping ship to Verizon. I don't care how much more it costs.

yeah, umm, call and ask to have your 'data reset'...they will re-activate you and reprovision your line...it makes a world of difference...then install the pre-release 3G radio and thank me. I saw 2.5mbps today on nearly full bars in an area that with my E3D stock (and updated) radio I barely got 500kbps (and even less with update)
edit: also, do the proxy-remove-hack....
yes 3d is a amazing piece of machinery
If you're still happy with your OG Evo, I wouldn't do it.
We have no idea what's going to happen to Sprint's WiMax network in the coming months now that they're working with LightSquared to replace their WiMax with LTE. Because of that, I wouldn't swap one WiMax phone for another WiMax phone right now.
I'd only recommend buying one of the newer Sprint 4G phones if you're updating from something like 2+ years old.

Well, I know a lot of people aren't happy with the Evo 3D, I decided to drop this nugget and see how it went. Like I said, I'm happy with my evo. My Radios don't suck too bad, only thing I have issue with is a Black SOD every 9hrs when using a custom kernel... which I can workaround with a stock kernel.
You're post is a little confusing. so... you're waiting for the nPrime?. that's how it sounded. That's looking to be an October release, it's being made by Samsung too. Which I find odd, I would think Motorola would be involved. Yeah, I'm waiting for the nPrime. It's being made by Samsung which, while at first really put me off but I did sport an NS4G for a few weeks last month. Aside from feeling cheap and too light--which most people wouldn't see as a down side--it was actually a fantastic phone. Great battery life, phenomenal camera and an unmatched Android experience. It did have the traditionally weak Samsung radio, but, it seems that you can't escape that anymore.
...and so far as Motorola is concerned Google has assured it's partners that the bidding process for the Nexus line would in fact remain the same. Google is saying all but "listen, we bought MMi for the patents. The Set-top-box and mobile manufacturing is just a plus, that we don't intend to use." Of course time will tell how true that is. For the time being I believe them.
However a Motorola built Nexus would probably be fantastic as long as they ditch that ****ty Pentile screen technology. I bet they would have class leading radios and battery life too.

Thank god I don't get the Black SOD...
Yeah, I'm waiting for the nPrime. It's being made by Samsung which, while at first really put me off but I did sport an NS4G for a few weeks last month. Yea MOTO isn't far from being a great phone manufacturer..they do have pretty good build quality and their radios are bar none..they have been in that game for a while..ditch all MOTO blur or map and the pentile..add some Google magic and we could have a winner in a few months.

Agreed. Their designs are a bit stodgy looking, but their hardware (aside from those horrible screens and penchant for keyboards) is rock solid. They nearly invented cellular mobile phone technology. They have been doing mobile communications for as long as there has been a commercial mobile communications market. Their radios are fantastic. Build quality is always awesome. How many OG Droids do you still see around? Tons...and I have seen a lot that are beaten to death physically but still kicking ass, 2nd hand, 3rd hand...that says quite a bit.
Without knowing anything about the contents of their patent portfolio I am confident that it contains thousands of very relevant patents. I can't wait to see Google's next move.
I came from the Epic 4G to the Evo 3D. The main thing about Samsung was there slowwwwww release of updates. The Epic 4G rolled out with Eclair, took a while to get Froyo and is still awaiting Gingerbread. This really seem slow down ROM and kernel development. HTC seems pretty spot on with their OS updates.
I am waiting to see if Samsung support for their phones has improved. If it has, maybe I would consider going back. Until then, my Evo 3D is the shizzle.
