Have anyone signed up insurance through their cell phone provider or outside of their cell phone provider (i.e. aruisance, squaretrade and so on). What do you think of it, and is it worth it? I am about to sign up for Squaretrade for ADH (accidental damage from handling). I have butterfingers so I don't trust myself with high end smartphones without insurance!
Any recommendation / suggestions will be awesome. Thank you!
Honestly if your going to keep your phone stock then yes. If your going to mod your phone then no (unless u can put it back to factory stock)

I have Squaretrade and have had it on many previous devices. Their customer service is the best in the industry. And they aren't particular about stock ROMs or anything like that...at least not my experience. I sent them my water damaged Fuze that had EnergyROM on it and within 2 days I had money sent to my Paypal.

I haven't had phone insurance for about 5 years since I was with US cellular and had a Razor. It was only like $50 deductible and $2 a month, so not bad. My first phone on ATT was the first iphone and you couldn't get insurance thorough ATT, then I got a 3G iphone (No insurance again), then finally got a Captivate but it was something nuts like a $200 deductible on top of like $5-$6 a month. Imagine your car insurance was almost %50 of what your car costs? So like $15,000 deductible on a 30k car lol, I'd imagine that insurance company would be booming for business.
The only thing is I'm not sure what the deductible is on the Atrix but if it was like $50 with a $5 a month or something it could be ok. I just know the Captivate was totally not worth it.
It's real simple. The atrix cost 500 bucks without a contract right? If your phone breaks you will spend that to replace it. If you have Asurion it is 125 bucks... Not sure what they would do about a custom Rom since your claim would be on a non functional phone. Lots of money and resources just to void a claim on a phone that probably cost 200 or less wholesale.
Thank you for all your help. I have decided to get SquareTrade warranty. I liked their perks. I'm feeling much more relieved now, haha.
The big disadvantage with Squaretrade is the policy is cancelled after two claims and Squaretrade does not cover lost or stolen phones.
sounds like it may be better to go with your service provider insurance. Then agsin i never really broke or lost a phone

No, you have to buy the phone from best buy to get their insurance.
Check your house or renter's policy (I'm assuming you have them for all of your other goodies). That's what I've always used for replacements.

This has not been true for several months. You can add it as long as they can see the phone in question.
Personally I think Sprints is better, but it's much more expensive. You really have to go through them both and compare. In the last year I've made 3 claims (1 OG EVO, and 2 3D's) and each time I had a new phone at my door the next morning. I haven't used Best Buy's program but from what I've heard and read you're pretty much guaranteed to get a refurb and it takes several days for you to receive it. Both plans have their strengths, you just have to look at them and see what's best for you.

I bought the BesyBuy insurance when I got my EVO two years ago. I won't be making that mistake again. While the BesyBuy has no deductible, they have a lot of restrictions on it.
Your phone gets lost or stolen. Too bad if you have BesyBuy. Sprint has you covered.
You dropped your phone in a pool? BesyBuy lets you drown. Thier insurance only covers water damage that didn't occur from immersion. Guess that means if it gets damaged from taking into a steam room. Sprint throws you a life preserver.
Have to file a claim with BesyBuy? Pay $100 deposit for a cheap loaner phone and wait up to 3 weeks. If it still hasn't been repaired, you can then start fighting with BesyBuy for a new replacement phone as the policy says your entitled to. But don't expect them to do it willingly.
File a claim with Sprint? Pay your deductible and they send you a replacement via express shipping with a prepaid return label you put your old phone in after you get the replacement setup.
Yes, you pay more for the Sprint insurance, but you get better coverage and service.
When the usb port broke on my evo, the BesyBuy insurance had been canceled on the two year anniversary of getting the phone. I was supposed to be able to renew but they didn't inform me about it. I had called to give them my new CC for billing after it had been canceled (I didn't know it had been canceled at the time) and they didn't have the decency to tell me. It wasn't until I brought my phone in for repairs two weeks later that I found out about it. Thier solution to the problem? Buy a new phone from them. Needless to say I told them where they could shove their phone and left.

Just put $5-$10 aside each month. If you need a new phone buy a used one with that money and sell your broken one on ebay (you'd be surprised how much you can get). If you are like me, and I suspect a lot of other people, you will never need to buy a replacement and then you will have enough money to buy yourself a new phone before you know it. (selling your current one)
If you lose or break your phone in the first couple months you are out of luck but that's the risk I am willing to take to save money and it hasn't been a problem for me.
Thanks for all the answers looks like bestbuy has more downs than up well right now i have sprints insurance and i think ill keep it

Personally I think insurance should only be added for a temporary amount of time. Im already seeing Evo's on ebay selling for $440. Once the price drops a bit more, keeping TEP will be just ridiculous based on the deductibles. Like a poster suggested selling the broken phone and buying a used phone is the way to go.

true but keep in mind sprint usually does not charge a deductible unless the phone is lost or stolen. If it can still be brought into the store, they can try and fix it. if it cant be fixed, they will replace it probably without a deductible.

Yep, I second this. I have had multiple replacements (maybe 5) in the past 3 years without paying a deductible. The only time they told me that I may have to pay a deductible was when my wife's HTC Hero was physically falling apart. I called Sprint, and they put a note in my account to credit me $100 to cover the deductible if I do bring it in and they have to send it to Asurion. You really can't beat that. If I had put the money in a jar and not had TEP, I would have put $300 in that jar over the past 3 years, and I don't think that is enough to cover the 5 phones I went through. So in my scenario, Sprint worked out. Best Buy would have charged me a deductible each time.

Although there is mixed reviews on this company, it does look promising. I have never heard of them. Thanks for posting this.
I have to wait a little while until my current contract with Sprint is up before getting the Evo LTE. But I see them on ebay for about the same money as one would cost me in the store once I'm upgrade elegible. I'm wondering how the ebay phone process works to get it working on the Sprint network? I've only bought phones from Sprint and BB in the past. I know I need a clean ESN, but what I'm wondering is about activation and insurance. Does it cost me money to activate an ebay phone or can I just do it through the website tools? Is it possible to get insurance for the phone (aftermarket I'd assume)? If so, who do you recommend? Anything else to know about getting it working?

no it doesnt...if you have the phone just call sprint and ask them to activate the phone and theyll ask you for the serial number and such and activate it in a few mins and your good to go with a new evo and still out of contract

just tell them to turn on the insurance when you activate or they will "forget" to say anything. I bought an OG EVO from e-bay as long as the seller is reputable you will be ok.
I think that technically there's an activation fee, but from what I've seen before it's not that hard to bypass. If you're finding a phone on ebay that costs the same as the subsidized price, then I'd think very hard about what I was doing. These phones are normally 2-4x the price you pay when you get a subsidy; you're putting yourself up for some real risk if an unsubsidized phone costs as little as a subsidized new phone.
If you do buy it though and it does turn out to be a clean ESN/MEID, then first off congrats since you just dodged a massive bullet and saved tons of money, but also go and sign up for TEP, at least for a few months. The only reason I recommend this is because I'm still not 100% sure that the great deal you got is without a hidden problem that could jump out at you and eat your savings.

Activation fee is charged on a new line or upgrade...not an ESN swap
Plus one for hidden issues/bad ESN.
I would seriously question an EVO on the second hand market for $200-300

We're definitely on the same page as far as second-hand devices go. That said, I would love clarification on the fee for hidden issues. It's not something I've ever heard of. I'm not discounting it as a falsehood by any means, I really am just very surprised to see such a thing and would love details. Screenshots work best IMO.
I've seen them go for 300-350 but less than that is a bad phone
Thanks for the input so far. I don't think I can get TEP from Sprint on a phone I did not buy from them. I've found SquareTrade offers a warranty, though. We have used them before, so that is probably the way I'd go there.
There are a lot of these phones on ebay for under $250 right now. I figure $250 is about the break even point when I include the activiation fee and almot 10% sales tax we pay around here. I can't imagine they are all scams. I appreciate the concern, though.

Cool. Good to know.
I look at Craigslist and Ebay almost daily to see what they're selling for. I have one and also the GSIII. One must go soon and if its the EVO, I don't think I'll get more than $300 for it. Some are selling brand new EVO's, well suppose to be, for $250 on CL. My opinion, which means nothing, thinks that maybe the EVO has a bad reputation right now from the people that swapped them out for the GSIII. Not sure.
Seems like the S3's are going for much more money. Could be it's because they work for every carrier?

i have bot multiple phones/devices on e-bay. have not had any issues with activation.
one time i bricked a device and the guy i originally bot it from was able to fix it for a small fee.
The activation fee is only on new phones. It is only when the esn is first activated on sprint. So if I bought a new phone and activated the esn but left it new in box and then sold it to you there'd be no activation fee as the esn was already in sprints system
Bestbuy offers their insurance plan for $10/month, same as ATT.

No deductible with Best Buy. Also check out squaretrade.
You have to purchase from best buy to get their insurance, but they either repair your phone or replace with new phone. ATT gives a refurb after charging deductible.
You really have to read the fine print with insurance. Not sure about the Best Buy plan, but I know that Squaretrade does NOT cover lost/stolen phones where the AT&T plan does. But then again, AT&T is a $199 deductible where squaretrade is $99. Also, it doesn't hurt to check with you current insurance provider...I know progressive has started offering mobile phone insurance as well, but at the end of the day, it cost about the same as AT&T.
I sell cell phones for Target and our insurance plan is better than AT&T's at the same price with a smaller deductible. But I've heard nothing but great things about Best Buy's insurance plan. If you bought it at Best Buy trust me get their plan over AT&T's insurance. There's no limit to the amount of claims you can make whereas at&t caps you at 2-3 depending on the frequency. Also yes the carriers are the only ones that cover lost or stolen phones but if I'm not mistaken you have to present a police report to show that you made a reasonable effort to locate your phone. And check with Best Buy on free battery replacements. At Target we offer 2 free battery replacements during the 2 years you have the phone in case your battery just gets progressively worse. In the case of a phone like the LGOG that translates to swapping out the phone since you can't just change the battery.
If you're already going to get insurance then anything other than the carrier is better.

This phone costs $550.00 to buy outright, if you went without insurance on it for the two year length of a contract you couldn't even buy half a phone.
But it is still a ridiculous amount of money to pay for an insurance policy on an item that costs only $550. You are paying half the cost of the device for insurance. I also get extended warranty, accidental loss and damage warranty from my Visa card when I purchase things on it.
My phone's been stolen along with my entire laptop bag in a smash & grab out of my car in the past too. All of the items stolen were covered under my car insurance. So I just cannot understand paying that much for a warranty, its a tremendous scam and HUGE profit for the retailer.

it may be a scam...then again, most insurance policies are scams designed to benefit the provider. however, most folks that i know who have purchased a warranty have made claims on it.
how long does visa provide warranty services? a full 90 days? woohooo! and most policies only cover up to $500, which is less than the cost of our phone.
comparing the value two vastly different types of insurance coverage based solely on the monthly cost is just plain silly on your part. insurance costs are "supposedly" based on the likelihood of claims being made against a policy and the payout associated. chances are, that you're much more likely to make a claim for a lost or damaged phone than you are for house or car. why? cause for house or car the cops gotta come out and the insurance adjuster and papers and photos taken and if you're found to be a liar, then you get charged with insurance fraud (which is a bad thing). but the likelihood that you'll drop your phone on the concrete, sit on it, have it stolen, leave it someplace or have the battery crap out on you are pretty high and no police reports or investigations are required. AND since our phones have non-replaceable batteries, i'd bet that a fair number of folks who get insurance will also have a new phone in 18-20mths.

I think you should have to pay for it. After all if its a manufacturers defect you need to deal with the manufacturer. Sprint is offering you a service that allows you to walk into a sprint store and get a refurbished device same day.
So your paying sprint to deal with the defective device and offer you a replacement device.
So your issue for example, you would have to mail your device into HTC, wait for them to diagnose and repair it and send it back.
EVEN with over night shipping thats a day there, a day back, plus shipping costs, now add in the time HTC takes to fix it (they also will not send a loaner phone or swap the device, under the manufacturers warranty they repair yours, unless they dont have parts or is a main board problem, then you get a replacement) your out a week or more if you deal with the manufacturer.
So i think we should be thanking sprint for taking on the financial burden of having to have all these seed stock refurbished devices that we can walk in and get replaced same day for 35, or 50 bucks. I for one am happy they offer it.

That makes no sense if they sell a product they should stand behind it. I work for a tire and service center in Michigan and if we tried to charge people for manufacture defects because we weren't the manufacturer, people wouldn't do business with us. perhaps different regions have different rules.

We do honor it. Which is why we replace the phone. If you choose to get insurance you avoid this cost. But if you choose not to then the fee applies. Phones are expensive. You can't expect them to switch out these phones for free. Sprint pays HTC to carry them. HTC has no financial burden in replacing their own devices. To say we shouldn't sell a protect we can't guarantee is ridiculous. No electronic can be guaranteed. Things happen. Nothing is perfect. Best Buy won't repair my samsung tv unless I purchase their protection plan. Same thing.
I certainly feel you should have to pay of you go to Sprint for your HTC phones malfunction and YOU made the choice not to insure it. You don't want to pay? Go to the people who made it.

The difference is, if a tire fails, someone can die. If a phone fails, unless it self combusts, you're not likely in any danger.
So what's sprint's justification for raising the price. They still send 'em off to htc to be repaired/refurbished. Most HD manufacturers offer advanced replacement. You have to send in your bad drive within 30 days or they charge the card. Why doesn't htc/samsung/whoever offer this?
I think this is just another way of nickel and diming the customer.
If my Vizio TV fails in the first two years I take it back to Costco and they swap it out for free, the main reason why I bought it from them not best buy. Let's put another way, if your $500 fuel pump fails with in the first year we would replace it free of charge. It's called good customer service.

Sprint replacing a phone for free outside of the 14 day period is stupid.
What does the CARRIER have to replace your hardware when they didn't make the phone.
That makes as much sense as me calling Time Warner to replace my broken tv.
Most electronics now a days tell you to not return device to the retailer and to have the manufacturer replace it.
Blah difficult customers....:banghead:

My personal experience has been same day. Took them a few hours to do testing and verify no liquid damage..
perhaps different regions have different rules.
I went to a Sprint owned store, not a 3rd party store.

As you said... "manufacturers". Sprint isn't the manufacturer. And you're expecting them to replace any issue your phone has for free? Without having their replacement protection? Smh. You guys kill me with the entitlement, customer is always a victim stuff....

I see sprint (or any wireless carrier) the same way I see a car dealer. Your car comes with a mfg warranty for some amount of time. During that time you bring it into any dealer of that mfg and they fix it free of charge. A free repair is expected. If they can't repair it, then they replace it. Again, free of charge during the warranty period.

You can see them the way you want, but it still doesn't make it the standard. Difference between sprint and your local Ford dealer is that Ford has a vested interest in that dealer.
HTC has their warranty and no ties to sprint besides selling them a product, sure sprint has its repairs stores but doesn't mean htc likes it.
