My dad had installed the gingerbread leak but was complaining about random reboots, so he gave me his phone to bring back to fro-yo, I backed everything up with titanium, and I successfully brought it to ED05, but now the phone does not recognize being connected to USB, and my computer cannot see it connected.
I cannot Odin anymore because computers do not recognize it, I have tried uninstalling the drivers and re installing, but that did nothing. I was hoping at the least that I could root and restore all his apps and data, but I can not do that either, because I cannot use Odin or SuperOneClick, and Z4 or Gingerbreak do not seem to work.
I would appreciate any help, right now i am puzzled. But I guess at last resort, he could switch phones with me, and recover everything on my fascinate.
Did you make sure that the settings are correct, like USB debugging checked, etc. Mine had that issue too until I fixed those.
I had an exact same problem with several computers. Once I replace the USB cable to new one, it works fine. Bring to Verizin store, they will replace it for you.
The samsung phones are very picky about usb cables. Also you will find alot of USB Cables are not "sync" cables, but for charging only. Target sells a USB sync cable for $6 (last i checked). Also, i have heard (but not verified) that if you go to walmart at each cash register on the candy rack there is a cheap usb car charger for $4 that has both micro and mini usb connectors. This charger consistst of a DC car adapter and the usb cable and have heard it will work for sync if you are broke and cant afford a better cable.
Use a different computer.
The same thing happened to me a while back. I installed the drivers on a different computer and used the cable that came stock to put files on the SD card so I could flash a different ROM and that fixed the problem. You can also connect your device to your computer and put the files on your SD card and swap the cards on the two devices. Hope This helps!

Ok.
So at some point I soft bricked my phone and I got the Phone -- ! -- Computer screen.
Managed to get it back into download mode, and then unbricked it by getting it flashed to EB01 as instructed in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026746
So now I have EB01, which is working, however there is a new problem.
When I try to plug the phone into a computer, it is not recognized (Says the device has malfunctioned).
I have tried 3 different computers. I made sure I used the cable that came with the phone.
I brought it into the Verizon store, and they were unable to get any of their computers to recognize the phone either (we tried a few other cables there as well)
This is both in download mode and within the OS itself.
They told me to try downloading Vcast however that didn't work either.
So now I'm wondering if there is something I can do to get it to recognize it properly again.
Has anyone run into this situation before and managed to fix it?
I did twice have the phone plugged in via usb to my car, and walked out the car (was talking on the phone), and the USB yanked out, so that could have potentially damaged it (though it still charges, so I don't know)
Yanking it out could have very well done it. Only thing I would suggest is reformatting the drivers and attempting again this time leaving it plugged in and rebooting the computer. If that doesn't work, replacement time.
Do you have "usb debugging" turned on?
Did you activate the connection from the phone after connecting to computer? (mine shows a green screen with a button to activate the connection for mass storage)
beyond that... idk.
redownload the samsung drivers
based on the fact that so many PC's have been unable to connect and the info on yanking the USB charger in the car (I think we have all likely done that - though for me it has happened at work with the laptop<->network cable...) you may have damaged the plug/receptor (not sure what would be proper...).
I would do a visual inspection for kicks, though I am sure there could be damage you cannot see.
I believe that these USB connections are a minimum of 4 conductors (some devices are more proprietary and use more pins to ensure you are using an official cable so they can get you to buy more of their stuff - though some of those pins are not actually wired through the cable, but rather short to each other...). If you damaged only one, that could likely be the reason that you can get a charge but no data comm - and since it seems likely that one of the two data pins would be tx and the other rx, then I could see why teh PC would report the device had malfunctioned...
I am guessing here - logic, please don't fail me...
Just ordered a used Fascinate from Cowboom, and I've had nothing but trouble. It didn't come with the standard oem cable, so I've been trying to use old BB cables, to no avail! When I try to access mass storage, I hit enable on my phone, but the computer says USB not recognizes, or something along those lines. It charges fine with the cable, but can't access mass storage. How do I fix this?
Edit- tried with windows 7, 32/64.
I'm having the same prob with my husband fascinate (the pc recognizes mine with no prob)...I'm thinking there's something wrong with the micro port in the phone (it also got soaked in water overnight) but are you sure you have all of the right Samsung drivers installed on the PC? I know you can get them on droidstyles guide to rooting...that would be the easy solution...if you've tried that you may want to try different cables...although none of this worked for me it may for you...I'm now onto trying to replace the plug on the phone itself being i can see the corrosion in it...

Get this Samsung cord for $1.67: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001XXUOQI/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
Then use that cord and tell us if it works. [Or you can try another micro USB that you have]
If it still doesn't work, and if it was originally purchased less than a year ago, Samsung will RMA it for free. Mine I got 11 months old, and would only charge, and not connect to the PC.
I had it sent back, they "fixed" it but it kept freezing every morning when I woke up [after sitting for a long time] so I sent it in again and they replaced the BGA or something and also the main board, and after that it worked fine.
I cannot seem to get the phone to identify on the PC with anything but the Samsung USB cable.
The problem is... I think I already lost it.
I have 4 basically new microUSB cables from various sources and none of them will do anything but charge.
WTheck has samsung done?
Did you try changing the mode on your phone from Change Only to the Hard Drive one once you connect it?
Try a different USB port. This phone works on every USB cable I have in my possession.
i find mine charges really slow unless i use the samsung one:/

Because the phone only charges it does not adapt a mode and therefore wont' let me change it.
edit: fixed it. Problem was I used a program to try and turn on UMS mode and it wasn't working. Wouldn't do any other mode until I turned it back.
But I still have had problems usb cables. The one with my Nook for example wont work at all and it worked with both my nook and my atrix.
S3 wont even recognize on a mac.
surprize me with something amazing android your boring me.
Mine works with the Sensation cable on my main PC, my G2X cable on my laptop and with my Lumia cable in my gym (charger). It also works fine at work with a generic cable (on a PC). Either your phone or your cable is defective.
EDIT: make sure your drivers are up to date on your PC.
Mine works fine with BlackBerry/HTC/HP cables.
Having a strange problem with my phone atm.
The other day I tried connecting to my PC (Win 7) to try and root my phone, only to find that my computer wouldn't recognize the phone. I've had this problem once before with my old Droid X, and that was due to me accidentally reversing the power lines on a homemade USB Host cable, which ultimately fried the USB port.
I thought maybe something similar had happened, as i've been using another homemade Host cable for charging the phone lately. This cable had never given me problems in the past, but I thought maybe something came lose and shorted. However, using that same cable, I can connect a mouse or a keyboard to my phone no problem, so I know that the USB port is still working. Because of this, i'm under the impression that the phone is maybe stuck in host mode?
I thought it might be the cable I was using, but I just bought a fresh one and it's doing the same thing: I'll hear the Win 7 device connected tone go off twice, but it won't show up with the rest of my drives, and the USB connection icon won't show up in the status bar on the phone, although the phone charges fine.
Tried factory reset, didn't help.
Also tried it on two different computers, and no dice. All the computers have the Motorola Device Manager installed.
Any ideas?
EDIT: ****! Wrong section
EDIT: Dunno if this is "progress", but after cleaning the port out with rubbing alcohol, and reinstalling the motorolla device manager, I now get a "USB device not recognized" error every time I plug the thing in... Mouse still works fine though.
Fixed it, for anybody who actually is reading this.
First, since my phone worked fine as a USB host, I tried taking one of my cables and grounding pin 4 to turn it into a Host cable.
No dice. I noticed a resistor on pin 4 though, which I thought was kinda weird for something that's supposed to be floating.
Then I read up about the whole "motorola factory cable" thing. Took the same cable, undid the Host mod, and then pulled out the resistor. Voila! Problem solved.
I guess the "Universal" in "Universal Serial Bus" was just a joke, right?
Hi.
I have an Xperia X10 that I gave to my husband. He's good with computers etc.. and he went ahead and unlocked and rooted this phone. It's working awesome - EXCEPT - when you plug it into the computer via USB the computer will NOT recognize it. It says exactly, " "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctions, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"".
Here is a bit of background info:
Before my husband rooted the phone etc. the micro usb port on the phone wasn't working properly - it was loose and you would have to really wiggle it, bend it etc.. to make the debug engage. He did get it to flash/root/unlock/install custom rom successfully ( he installed doomkernel 2.6.29-modFXP-DooMKernel-v06) all while the phones usb wasn't working ideally. At this point he was trying out some settings and branded it as a X10i Generic. (This phone WAS a Rogers phone and we are in Canada). He then wanted to change the branding since x10i wasn't working too great. At this point the USB port on the phone wouldn't engage into debug or charge anymore so we took it to a repair place and they soldered the usb port back - they told us this was common (them coming loose). After they soldered it they said it wouldn't go into debug and that it was because (probably) of the firmware my husband put on but didn't really know.
From that day on this phone has never connected to the computer successfully - the computer won't even recognize it as a memory card - as soon as you plug it in it tries to install drivers and then the computer says exactly this::
"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctions, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
Our computer is running Windows 7 (64bit) - and the phone use to work fine.
We have tried using SDK tool, installing drivers manually when the phone is plugged in, but the computer will just say that it is already up to date, and it names the phone ' UNKNOWN DEVICE" and has the exclamation box next to it indicating it's malfunctioned. Sony software (PC Comp. etc) also will not detect the phone.
Have been trying to get this working for about 2 months now. 2 months of reading, google searches, more reading, trying idea after idea, and it doesn't work.
Has this happened to anyone else? Can someone help out here? Is this a firmware/software problem (maybe because it's been branded as a x10i)? Or could this all be a matter of the USB port being improperly fixed?
Facing same USB malfunctioned issue
I am facing the same issue since quite long since i have rooted my Samsung Galaxy 2 SGH T-989. My phone gets connected properly but when i try to transfer any of the files from computer to my phone. It gets disconnected automatically after copying the stuff till 5% to 10% and shows ''USB device has malfunctioned".
I am also trying to search and rectify this issue, but till now i have found nothing. Please let me know if you come across of kind of solution for it.
Im sometimes facing the that unrecognized USB but, everthing working.

I faced the exact same problem with my x10 mini. It wouldn't charge properly nor connect to my PC. I would have to wiggle the micro USB port and cable to get it working, which actually got me wondering if the problem was really the USB port. After I've bought a male-male USB to micro USB cable everything worked fine. Same thing happened with a brand new x10. I tried to use the USB cable I bought instead of the original one which came with the phone and you wouldn't guess, everything works fine.
So try to connect it with another USB - micro USB cable.

We have already tried connecting it to all of the (10) usb ports on our computer and we have tried NUMEROUS cables ( between my husband and I we have probably 8 cables, and have tired them all)
