Root for bell version? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im about to pick one up and needed to know if its rootable yet or if its the same as the one thats out already? thx

I bought one today but I don't think there is. It is KG2 Kernel but its a GT9100-M model...

can you still install unsigned .apk's?

Yes, you can root your SGSII - a few others have done it already on bell branded phones - just follow instructions on this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I was wondering if I could as you, or anyone with a Bell SGSII :
Can you tell us what modem you have installed on ur Bell SGSII?
(Check under settings/aboutphone/baseband version.
Ive had my UK version here since it was shipped from clove and out of all the modems I found that the XXKG1 gives me the best signal, 3g speed and call quality without data dis-connects.
If possible, a copy of your build.prop file as well as this could drastically improve cell/data on phones that are not Canadian carrier specific.
Eg: I have edited my build.prop and have gotten 7mbs up on fido.
Thanks in advance.

I bought a bell i9100 today. Rooted no problem. Still trying to get it similar ulocked

Yes I've installed a few.
My problem is that my Nandroid backup went bad, I don't have a stock ROM to go back to. Anyone know of a Bell ROM that's been uploaded yet?

I think someone in another thread is trying to dump the bell stock rom. this should help u when it becomes available. Guess Ill also have to wait for that and extract the modem and try it.
I really want to see what the build.prop file says for data tho.

You getting the AT&T branded GS2? Or the International unlocked version? If you're getting the AT&T branded device, you're in the wrong place. If you're getting the AT&T Skyrocket (LTE) model of the GS2, you want to be in the SGH-I727 forum. If you're getting the regular AT&T GS2, you want to be in the SGH-I777 forum.
This forum is for the GT-I9100.
For your own sake, don't even think about using a ROM intended for a phone model that doesn't match yours.

no i got the international because of more development.. was wondering what firmware or modem works best with at&t people on international s2
Instead of opening a new thread, I'll ask here. Is it possible to use American or a similar non Europe 2.3.7. ROM for my SGSII? My operator didn't release any newer version than 2.3.4., so is it possible?
Currently:

Siyah kernel
XXKI1 baseband

You'll have to try them out to see what works best for you. I'm still on stock KI3 (2.3.5), but I've HEAVILY tweaked it, adding rotation animation, email that bypasses administrator requirements, battery icon with percentage remaining, etc. I considered GingerMod (I used FroyoMod on my Moto Milestone, and liked it; GingerMod is from the same developer), and CM7 (also used on my Milestone), but in the long run decided to stick with stock. But this is a personal preference. All you can do is back your phone up, flash, and experiment for yourself. (FYI, I'm also on AT&T, and have the GT-I9100)

If you have a GT-I9100, you should be able to use any firmware from Intratech's thread. Instructions are in the first post, and official firmwares currently go up to 2.3.6. The only thing 2.3.7 added according to wikipedia is Google Wallet support for the Nexus S 4G. So I wouldn't bother trying to get 2.3.7.
Yes but I'm afraid that some may not be compatible. My usb jig didn't arrive yet. So my baseband version doesn't matter?

I'm fairly certain that it shouldn't matter, no. My baseband is currently XXKI3, personally.
I originally had an XWKE7 firmware, which is for UK. I have flashed to XXKI3, which is for Poland. As long as you have a GT-I9100 (and NOT a GT-I9100G), it shouldn't matter.
Thank you! I would use the thank button but it doesn't exist in this App. :?

Which firmware
Just got an I9100 with 2.3.4, and would like some improvement.
I am on the ATT network in USA.
If I grab just any 2.3.6 firmware, no matter intended for what country, it will give me top HSPA speed here?
What about when I move to France, for example, would I need to flash a different version?
Does baseband version number imply the freq bands supported for each technology?
Sorry about all the questions, just that Kies doesn't like my phone, so I'll need to "go manual"

Sounds good, but I want to go there in 2 steps. The best 2.3.x first.
Its confusing to figure out which is best, when according to the modem thread, none of the listed roms on the rom thread have good power or speed performance.
The 2.3.4 rom I've got now sucks for speed.
If I start experimenting, get hosed and want to roll back, I can't, because I don't see this firmware anywhere:
PDA:I9100XWKH4
Phone/Baseband (modem): I9100XXKH3
CSC: I9100OXXKH2
Maybe I can copy it off my phone before flashing with Odin?
What's the best course of action?
Any help appreciated...

Yes, it is possible. I9100 ROMs will indeed work on I9100P phones, but NFC won't work anymore... and it sounds like you already know this.
It's ALSO possible you can also brick your phone if you don't follow instructions.
ALL THAT SAID... If you are concerned about stability and NOT bricking your phone, then I suggest you do NOT flash ANY ICS based ROM, as it's not yet been officially released. That means any ICS based ROM is built off a leak, so stability is NOT guaranteed.
thank you for the explanation. I appreciate it.
by the way, even the radios(modems) are compatible/flashable?

Hi,
I also have the GT-i1900P Orange UK version.
Can you tell me which ROM did you flash? I need to debrand that Orange stuff since I'm on giffgaff. Would love to have some latest generic Samsung firmware but I'm a bit lost when it comes to ROMs. So far I've managed to remove simlock using Samsung Galaxy S unlocker and flash "CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip".
Thanks

You can flash any I9100 (NOTE: NOT an I9100G) firmware. Just know that you'll lose NFC if you do. But it looks like you already got this information in a different thread.

The first thing anybody should be doing after rooting and before flashing an ICS BETA ROM is making an EFS backup(download release.zip)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
and then making a Nandroid backup just incase you need to get back to your previous Firmware.Without these 2 things you could loose your phone cos your flashing a BETA ROM.
EDIT:A good kernel for ICS is LP6 as LPB seems to have more bugs in some ROMs.

Then I went on flashing I9100XXLPB with ODIN (there were three files).., the same way you flashed CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip
So far so good! on 4.0.3 , performance is great
got 4027 on quadrant benchmark
absolutely no crashes yet..

I've made the stock firmware for Bell that was originally on here (search). From my experience making that and the subsequently making Telus and Rogers stock firmware with files from other people, I know that if you flash one of the big three's firmware on a Bell Note, the model reported by the software is that of the owners firmware. Can confirm it as when I flashed the Telus firmware on my Bell Note, it reported it as an i717D (Telus' variant). I assume it will be the same in your case.

Failed firmware update question on international version

Hello,
I've done some searching and have seen some with the same issue. When I go to update it says:
"Failed to update firmware due to network or server problem. Try update update.. or try using kies."
Message started out of the blue a couple weeks ago.
Kies says I'm up to date. Tried through Mac and PC
Went to recovery and cleared cache and tried again. Saw that advised on another forum. Tried on 3G and different wifi networks. Possibly Samsung server error, but strange it lasted for weeks?
Baseband is I9300BULF1. Not rooted or anything.
This is my first Android. Mainly trying to isolate if an update is available or not and if there is a problem how to resolve.
just wondering if kies is up to date? Worth a check, personally I never use that rubbish, Odin for me!
thanks for reply.
I had checked and made sure Kies was up to date. I mainly use Mac, had just downloaded a version for PC, but made sure was latest version.
From what I see there are different versions based on region, etc.. Not sure if/how to tell what the latest version should be.
Latest firmware to flash is LG9 firmware.
It doesn't matter where you are, you can still flash it.
Go to samfirmware.com and you'll find the latest and you can flash it via Odin, way easier than that ota nonsense.
I've had 6 android phones and never once have I waited for an ota.

I have this file downloading
"Singapore (StarHub) 2012 July 4.0.4 I9300XXBLG9 I9300OLBBLG2"
From latest search that was the only one I saw with LG9
looking up info on odin as well. Looks like that's PC only program, but no problem.
Going to give this a go tonight.
Thanks
Lg8 is the same but European version I think so depending where you are it may be advisable to flash that, I'm fairly certain lg9 is the Asian version of lg8 so may not have your csc if you aren't Asian?

Yes, good point.
All custom roms are based on lg9 but then again they are all multi csc.
At the end of the day the csc doesn't really matter, its only related to carrier/location based bloat and crapware.

I have the international version. Just saying I'm I'm the USA as something was mentioned on first Page about LG9 and Asian. Browsing from phone now, have to do more research. Still new to droid
It won't do any damage to your phone if it is the intl version, it just may not be optimized for your particular network (HD voice, fast dormancy) and on the other hand it may be just fine.
tbh there is no official firmware for the intl s3 on American networks.
In fact there is a thread here for setting up the intl version on at&t by ceo.mtcl, look it up.
It won't do any harm to your phone tho, I'm in Ireland running a custom rom and its lg9.

Help with Modem on GS3 I9300 (VodafoneAU)

Hi, I'm fairly new to the scene, played around with a few mods and love it. My question today is how to install the correct modem on my GS3. My current ROM I have is UltimaROM on XXELL5 but I believe that to have the best possible performing 3g and WiFi experience on my smartphone I should be running the latest Vodafone modem as this is my carrier. I believe the latest is I9300TDUDLJ2. AFTER running the .zip file from my GS3 I run getril to confirm baseband and ril match, but I get the message 'ril unknown' there is no known rail to update through the app. Can anyone please point me in the right direction or advise me what I'm doing wrong or what I should be doing? Do I run with the modem that came with the ROM? Its just that I get poor 3g performance where ever I go :banghead:
Cheers and Happy New Year from Australia

I really don't know much about getril and stuff... lol
But I do know that installing a Custom ROM won't change your Modem
So you have the same Modem as you did when you had Stock ROM
This is normal, no worries. You will get the correct RIL as soon as GetRIL will be updated.
You should try Pimp my Rom from the Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androguide.pimp.my.rom&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hbmRyb2d1aWRlLnBpbXAubXkucm9tIl0.. It helps to improve the performance of your phone with several tweaks.
You can also extract the modem from the last Vodafone Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705650

I don't believe that's true. It depends on the custom rom you're flashing - some include the modem, others not.
To OP: the modem has nothing to do with wifi. I'd recommend asking/reading in the Australian thread (in the general sub-section) for the ril/modem. If you've flashed it though, just check under settings, about phone and then baseband version.

Thanks Anmar, will try it out. What software do you use to extract firmware? Also where do I then place it on my sdcard internal or do I zip extracted files and then run zip from cwm?

Sorry anmar not sure how this link should help me? Currently my baseband is XXDLID as this is the unbranded OZ modem I've updated to, but would prefer the I9300T version as I believe it is more suitable to use with Vodafone.

I thought you wanted the flashable .zip of the I9300TDUDLJ2 Modem? Am I right? If yes, here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/?4537gxzr532tr2s

Thanks anmar, but I have tried this firmware, even so now baseband is all good but comes up 'unknown ril found' using getril with no update. Any thoughts?

I think the database of GetRIL doesn't include it. Maybe the developer isn't focusing his work on carrier's modem right now, but don't worry everything is normal. Thanks to him by the way.
You're welcome, glad to help. How is your data connection working now? I hope fine...
Hey anmar yeah data connection is much better now, although will I not have stability issues if unknown rail is not rectified? Doesn't ril communicate software with hardware?

One thing I have noticed is that my 3g now changes between 2g-3g quite often?? Is it OK to use the modem that comes with ultimarom in Australia or do I need to use my carrier specific modem, or is there anything else that you would recommend? Will this be rectified once ril is updated?
Thanks a million in advance.

Sorry no idea. I don't speak about things I don't know, so I hope someone who's more qualified than me could answer.

From what I know, you can use any modem both from the I9300 and I9300T. However I can't tell you which one will be better for you. Try some modems and see which one suites you the best. I recommend you to try some tweaks from the Pimp my Rom app from the Google Play. I got some noticeable improvment with it.

When GetRIL will be updated you will get the current modem of your rom. However I just read that there isn't an XXELL5 modem, the last one is XXELL4. Give it a try and see how it works.
Thanks a million in advance.

Ignore ril for now if u phone working good theres no problem, ril is the radio integration layer by the way, in my opinion anything vodafone touches is usually second rate they really know very little about smartphone technology they just sell it, your s3 as far as i know has a multi band radio (5 band) that can self optimise to available signal, in vodafails case its 850mhz gsm which is oz standard. My bro is running a jellybam i9300 with no signal issues even when ril didnt match. If it aint broke maybe dont fix it lol hope this helps

Thanks Dan, tried the I9300 modem & I9300T and I get double the 3g speed using vodafail, LOL.
Thanks for the tip will just wait and see when GetRil gets updated.
Cheers
