[Q] Can anyone explain the builds to me please? - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been searching all night and can not find what i am looking for.
Can some one explain why the dell streak 5 I have is at version #347 15274 but i see that latest retail version as # 351 15609.
My question is what are the differences between the two? I also see a new build from hong kong version #354 15881.
I already have a rooted phone but i have never upgraded the version before. Is it even worth it?
I guess i am just confused.

Actually there is a lot of info at the XDA Streak Wiki.
It appears that 347 is one of the ROMs that TheManii does not have files for. You should contact him about sharing your ROM with him, so it can be posted to the Wiki.
AFAIK 351 is just bug fixes. I am running 351 and have found it to be very stable.

Thanks for your quick reply, Would you recommend the upgrade? Also which method would you recommend for doing this.

I have never used 347 so I can not make any comparison. I do know that 351 runs very well for me. The reports that I see for 351 are better bluetooth and wifi connectivity.
I would try downloading the 351 .pkg file directly to your phone. When the DL is complete open your notification bar and tap on the completed download and it should install. Using this method preserves your apps and settings. You should be connected to WiFi.
Please note that on some phones (probably depends on what apps you are using) you may see issues and have to do a factory reset after the upgrade which will mean setting up your phone again, so back everything up.
You must have the stock recovery for 347 on your phone for this to work. If you still have install-recovery.sh on your phone (never renamed or deleted it) your phone will still have the stock recovery on it. See this info about the recovery image.
If the upgrade does not install rename the file to upgrade.zip and make sure it is in the root of your SD card and install it from recovery.
Read this flashing guide.
Please contact TheManii before upgrading to see if you can get the 347 files to him.

I already have a nandroid of 347, what i dont have is a pkg which i would not expect him to have.

Any recommendations on Custom Roms?

Hey everyone.
I recently rooted my Hero GSM phone and tried to play around with some Custom Roms.. I'm currently running FroydVillain with a 691 kernel and I like it a lot, but want to know if there's any other Roms running smoother on the Hero packing Froyo..
I used to have the official eclair (2.1) with launcherpro installed, but wanted to try Froyo out because I heard that it runs 450 % faster than eclair. And since I went over to Custom Roms my batterytime has been lowered significantly..
Also if anyone could tell me what RADIO's are I would be very happy
Sorry for all the questions, but I have just one more..does updating the recovery software help on performance? I have an old version I think.. can anyone please link the newest?
I find the market of available Roms so large and wanted to know if anyone could recommend some Roms and include some links on where to get..
Froyo prefered since I just got used to how it works.
Thanks in advance

Latest Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
The radio I recommend is the latest GSM one at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?307-radio-roms-download-links
Are you using latest Froyd, as we've got reports of 2 full days of battery life.
But 450% is an exaggeration, as it's based on a nexus 1 without vs. with JIT. You should get > 5 Mflops though in linpack using froyo.
Regarding the question in the title. You could search around here a little on Q&A since it has been asked a lot of times But mostly you'll get the answer that it's different from person to person and everyone has their favourite ROM for instance my favourite ROM is Cronos (anything) but I'm guessing pulser_g2's would be VillainROM (LOL)
Lol. Yeah it depends on what you want. I mentioned Froyd as you're on it already, but sense 2.1 roms do still exist, though you might try disappointed with performance.
I used a sense rom recently and had to remove it as I couldn't bear the slowness, even with oc.
But yeah, search is your friend. Decide what you want, and you'll find it here.
Thanks for the links.
Yeah well, I spent almost an hour reading about different Roms here and there and I see that it's kinda up to one self what you like about the different Roms. I've been very happy with FroydVillain so far, but I guess I should go ahead and give some of the others a try.
I've just backed up my current phone settings with "Titanium Backup" but is this enough if I decide to try a new Rom and want to go back later on? or should I do a nandroid backup?
And again when I flash over the new recovery.img.. Do I need to backup anything beforehand?
My Froyd version is the latest and I've kept on updating whenever I saw new updates. And yeah, two days is in my opinion not much. Beforehand, on the official 2.1, I could easely tweak 4-5 days out of my standard Hero battery, but I guess this has something to do with the kernel?
Sorry.. I'm really a newbie on this

If you want to go back you need a nandroid backup yes. If your talking about updating your recovery image (lol I'm guessing) no you don't. Just flash it. And the battery has something (everything ) to do with the kernel but if you want better battery set you min freq of your CPU lower or you can lower the max freq.
I see..
Thank you very much for answering.
I have just one minor problem..
How the heck do I flash over the recovery image? Don't I use the FlashRec-thingy? Might have deleted it at some point :S

I reccomend you flashing Amon-RA. There is a guide in his thread on how to flash it But if you want the ultimate easy noob thing you can download ROM manager from the market which will alow you to download and flash a pretty descent recovery in one click
Yeah.. Flashing Amon-RA is what I'm trying to. It seems I have the 1.5.2 version installed and I just downloaded the 1.7.0 one..
The first time I flashed "Amon-RA" did it with the help of a program called FlashRec. I followed the guide on theunlockr.com and I now end up with a message: "Backup FAILED: Could not run command." when I try to "Backup Recovery Image" through that FlashRec program.
I have an idea of how to work around this but I'm not 100% sure this is what's needed..?
Could I run the phone into recovery mode (through that 1.5.2 Amon-RA thingy) and then flash the never version right onto it or is this the wrong procedure?

Lol thats excatly how I rooted my phone too (same recovery and website even) Look in the thread it's described how you flash the new recovery via ADB
Yeah ehm... I'm kinda new to this so all his "code" or whatever it is doesn't give me a hell lot of clues..
Install
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most (I probably forgot a few).
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img

I fixed the steps underlined but after that I kinda went cold on what the **** to do :S
I boot into my recovery and what I get from his "guide" is that I my Hero should do something when I plug in the USB cable.. but nothing happends.. anyone who can put it down in baby-steps for me? :O
There's another way to do this it seems (2nd guide in his thread) but it seems to involve even more "code" so I guess I'll settle with this if it's possible.. :S

For you I would just recommend installing "ROM manager" from the market and then let it install ClockworkMod recovery that should do for you
EDIT: There seems to be an issue with ROM manager at the moment. It wont flash...
Yeah.. Might as well try this out since no one wants to point out on how to it the "geeky"-way
EDIT:
I seem to get an error when trying to flash the ClorkworkMod Recovery.. Any idea why?
Nvm.. Some dude (erasmux) has made an update.zip and uploaded to the Amon-RA post.. it did the trick

The update.pkg is the actual rom and flashes via the first recovery screen (option 2 then it installs) after you've flashed the stock.img.
Clockworkmod (option 2 then black screen with green writing) is for update.zip which are update files for custom roms (steves 2.2) for that you flash clockworkrecovery.img.
You will also need to downgrade the baseband back to 1.1.1 version.
Hope it makes more sense now?
Hi, i am unable to find the stock image to help install the dell 2.2 rom.
The ones i tried are give a blank screen when i select update from SD (option 2) hence the problem. Searched a lot and there are too many image files saying stock image but all give the same problem, one gave a fota mismatch.
The PDF put together by one of the members was very helpful updating.
Thanks for your help on this.

Glad you got it sorted... the stockrecovery.img is for flashing purposes only, doesn't affect warrenty. There is a thread somewhere on modaco you might want to bookmark just in case, restoring streak to factory condition to send back sort of wording.

[Q] Baseband and Upgrade Issues, T-Mobile AWS Streak - Help!

Hiya,
So I bought a Dell Streak off Craigslist that happened to support T-Mobile AWS 3G. I didn't do enough research to realize that the Android 2.2 update was only out for unlocked and AT&T Streaks, and since the AWS Streak isn't supported by Dell, there's little to no chance of an official 2.2 upgrade.
This morning I decided to try flashing DjSteve's ROM, and after trying several Clockwork recoveries, I found an older version, 1.8.1, I believe, that wouldn't just sit at a blackscreen. It wouldn't flash either Steve's 1.5.1, 1.6.1 or 1.7 ROMs, so I decided to use FASTBOOT to flash over the baseband Steve recommends for 1.5.1 and higher of his ROM.
The ROMs still would not flash, and when the Streak boots back into the Stock 1.6, I have no cellular connection whatsoever, get strange warnings about my battery and charger not being supported (even though it wasn't plugged in) and in Settings > About, the baseband shows up as unknown.
I thought about trying to flash an AT&T baseband, and then flash the ROM, but I don't think this would give me my 3G back. I did not make any nandroid backups and I can't seem to locate the original AWS stock baseband to flash back to.
I also tried flashing StreakModRecovery using FASTBOOT, but neither 0.3.2 or 0.3.2.6beta work, they just sit at a black screen similar to what ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1 does.
I just want to get 2.2 on my Streak and have my cellular and 3G working again.
Can someone please help me?
Thanks much.

so far the recent aws streaks reporting in have builds not currently released to the public and are worth backing up before updating.

I was only able to find information about rooting the AWS Streak 2.2. It's possible I missed it, and if so, could you please point me in the right direction? I have been looking for a few hours, both on here and Google.
My Streak is:
Firmware version: 1.6
Baseband version: unknown
Kernel version: 2.6.29-perf
OEM version: GAUSB1A111933
Build number 9158
After attempting to flash the baseband, 4.AMSS for v1.5.1+, from the downloads section on streakdroid.com, I lost my cellular connectivity, Baseband shows up as unknown, my button LEDs flash randomly and the device tells me my battery or charger is broken even though it's not plugged in.
Also, I am not able to update. I can't get either a recent version of ClockworkMod or StreakMod to flash correctly - they just show a blackscreen after selecting Update package from SD Card from the Dell recovery (vol up + vol down & power), option 2. I was only able to get an older version of ClockworkMod to work, and that still would not flash DjSteve's ROM. I got an error code, Status 7.
!! 119 is yet another new version
could you please provide a nandroid of it? it's yet another version that's completely unique to the AWS streaks
The baseband you flashed only works with froyo builds, since you're currently on a 1.6 build it shouldnt work. You need to update your streak to an official 2.2 build to get back connectivity and as a prereq to flashing streakdroid

I suppose that makes sense that a 2.2 baseband doesn't work with 1.6.
I would be happy to provide a nandroid of it, if I can get some type of recovery installed again. I always end up with the black screen after doing option 2 from Dell recovery with both Clockwork and StreakMod.
Have you tried multiple versions and not just the most recent one? I think other AWS users have had trouble with the most recent ones. (Also keep in mind your streak is rather old compared to theirs, I really dont know the tiny differences that make some streaks not work with some recoveries/firmwares)

I've tried 0.3.2 and 0.3.2.6beta and neither work. I'm looking for older versions as we speak, but I'm not sure there any.
The only recovery I can get to load is ClockworkMod REcovery v1.8.1.7
It opens with the following errors:
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't find MISC:
ClockworkMod Recovery v1.8.1.7
E:Can't find MISC:
Attempting to perform a nandroid backup with this recovery fails, and says the following:
SD Card space free: 14737MB
Backing up boot...
Error while dumping boot image!
E:Can't find MISC:
I don't really know what else to do, other than to try and poke around and figure out how to go from 1.6 to 2.2 on my goofy version of the Streak.
Do you have any ideas?
If you cant nandroid, trying adb pulling the entire system folder.
Weither or not you can you might need to use qdl tool to update, I think the bootloaders on your streak might be too old to like the recoveries you tried (but I dont have any hard knowledge) I'm not really an expert on updating

Anyone recognize this build number - 8558?
Running Android version - 2.2,
Baseband version - AUS_100908_01_BOSS_EVT3_F-US,
Kernel version - 2.6.32.9-perf,
OEM Version - AUS_100980_01_boss_evt3_froyo_release
Phone is rooted, and it says it has Clockworkmod Recovery 2.5.0.7, but when I try to reboot from ROM Manager it just boots into normal operation, if I try to boot into recovery manually, it goes to a black screen and hangs up.
By way of explanation, I just bought this Streak from eBay and want to check what I have now, before trying any customization. I've checked several sources but see no mention of a build 8558.
A follow-on question would be what is the best way to get from here to one of the custom GB ROMs?
I've found some excellent information on this forum, and have the greatest respect for all of you who contribute with such patience, wisdom, and good humor.
Thanks for any help

ROM manager does not work well with the Streak. Best bet is to use StreakMod Recovery.
By GB rom I am guessing you mean gingerbread? There is only one gingerbread rom (gingerstreak) and that is in beta. Do you mean StreakDroid? Look at the development thread for your ROM choices. For a custom ROM the best bets are StreakDroid 1.9.1 or SimpleStreak. For a stock ROM I like BB 351, others prefer 354.
See this guide for flashing a rom and see my signature for more Streak info.
marvin02,
Thank you for the good information on ClockworkMod vs. StreakMod on the Dell Streak. I'll try installing StreakMod this evening. Once I have that working I'll consider the options for a custom ROM, but lean towards the Gingerbread derivatives. My understanding is that the two most noteworthy incentives for moving from FroYo to Gingerbread are battery conservation and wifi connectivity.
I've had the Streak for about two weeks now and am delighted with the features and performance, but would like better wifi consistency.
Not to beat a dead horse, but why can't I find anything on build 8558? Is a rare hybrid, a strange service provider ???
Again, I'm grateful for the advice.

While Gingerbread may have advantages over froyo in theory, there is no 100% working GB rom for the Streak. Read the Gingerstreak thread in the dev section for more info.
As far as your build, do you know how to create a shortcut to an activity? The article I linked to shows how to use Anycut, which is s free app. Launcherpro and ADW have this feature built in. Create a shortcut to the activity DisplayVersionInfo. When you tap the shortcut you have created you will get more detailed info about your build. See the attached image. This may help someone figure out your version.
You should also contact TheManii as he is the maintainer of the Streak Wiki and has been collecting as many of the ROM files as he can. If your ROM is one that has not been seen before he will want to get the files, but you may have a customized ROM put on by a previous owner. Some of the values displayed in the Phone Info are just strings from the build.prop file and may not truly indicate what is behind the scenes.
Note : screenshots can be taken with drocap2 (check swap endian in the settings) or Screnshot by Kastorsoft if your phone is rooted.
8558 is the froyo (2.2) leak that is installed with streakflash.zip
I have a handful of leak roms but they arnt listed on the wiki as only released roms with actual rom version numbers are listed.
The streak itself is more interesting if that was what was actually preinstalled and not installed by someone after the fact. But the rom is one I already have
"Can't mount SD Card"
marvin02,
Thank you for the detailed instructions. I removed ROM Manager and used your guide to install StreakMod with fastboot. Just to be sure, I reran the rooting script using SuperOneClick ver 1.7. I verified Superuser and StreakMod were working, then downloaded, copied, and renamed the update.pkg file for build 351 on my 8Gb class 6 micro SDHC card.
Next, I reinserted the SDHC card into the Streak, and booted into recovery. All went well up to Step 11: Select option 2 on the screen..., I chose the second option and got a verification screen, and toggled to Yes. At that point I got an error message I don't understand.
"v0.3.2.8
--Installing: SDCARD:update.zip
Finding update package...
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
(No such file or directory)
Can't mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted."
The micro SDHC card is properly inserted so I'm assuming this has something to do with how the card is partitioned, but haven't got a clue what can be done to rectify the problem.
As before, any advice is gratefully received.
you cant install pkgs with clockwork, you have to install the matching stock recovery.

To install a stock rom you must use the stock recovery, not StreakMod. This might help.
Take some time and check out the links in my signature.
Build version 8558
TheMannii,
Thanks for clarifying build number info. I wish I knew more about the history of the Streak, but I bought it secondhand after waiting too long to buy a new retail unit. I already had AT&T service, so not much was required for the swap from Blackberry. Now I'm just trying to learn a bit about how to do updates, etc.
All the old-timers on the forum have really been kind and generous with their time for a newcomer. For the encouragement as well as the help, thank you.
/me sniggers @oldtimers
Thanks all; again, you called it correctly... I mislabelled the recovery.img file. After retracing my steps all is well and 351 is running well.
All's Well That Ends Well
marvin02,
You were dead on. I mislabeled the recovery.img file, so the previous version was not overwritten. I now have build 351 up and running, and all looks good.
Thank you.

[Q] Flashing from Froyo to GB

Ok, so I haven't picked up my Streak in about 2 years since I got onto Sprint. I'm in the UK for a couple of weeks so needed to come back since it's GSM. I searched but didn't see a guide on how to flash from a Froyo ROM (Streakdroid 1.9.0) to one of the newer GB ROMs (I'm thinking Longhorn). My baseband is GAUSB1A131800-EU. I don't know what version of Streakmod recovery I'm on. I don't need a detailed guide on how to install Streakmod or the ROM. Just would appreciate if someone could tell me if there is a certain thing I need to do first (like update to the latest Streakmod) and if there are any dependencies between things like matching up a certain baseband with the ROM. Thanks!
I think I'm on CWM so I guess I have to go to Streakmod. Do I need to install stock recovery and/or ROM first? I have a vague recollection that I used to do something like that to update the baseband. I just can't remember because my Galaxy S2 you can independently flash modems and ROMs and of course, I haven't gone between Android versions as it's always been GB. Thanks!

What do you mean? Are you not able to connect with Fastboot? Is your cable /port broken so it won't connect at all? Anyway, here's what I suggest. First you need to install Fastboot. Search for the thread ADB and Fastboot and download the zip. I unzipped it to my C root directory to make things easy. Then search for the thread Dell Streak5/Flashing Guide. That has all the instructions to install Fastboot, connect with Fastboot. I'm assuming you found the thread with StreakMod so follow those instructions to then install it. If you don't know how to use Fastboot, search for the thread Dell Streak the Complete Guide. The guide is dated in terms of the files it references but the instructions on how to use Fastboot are still accurate. Just replace where it talks about Clockworkmod with StreakMod. Good luck.
Since I already wrote all this, I guess I'll add what I did in case it helps someone. Moving from Froyo to GB requires updating the baseband. To do that, I installed the stock 407 recovery and then stock 407 ROM. Then I installed StreakMod then flash the GB ROM of your choice. I chose Longhorn 2.8. Only had it for about a day but seems to work fine. No issues with reboots. Can't comment on speed or battery life since I haven't used the Streak in like a year so I have no reference.
