I am in need of some quick assistance. I opened my case to my GT10.1 this morning and found a scratch. I have until tomorrow to return this and plan on doing so at lunch today (about 3 hours from now).
Being as I am rooted, how do I un-root and return to stock?
Do I just flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118132
and if so, do I flash it from recovery or what?
I'm not sure that would unroot the device. In this thread there's a link to the stock rom, but again, I don't believe that would unroot. Where did you buy it? I'm pretty sure they'd probably just take it back anyway. Chances are the employees won't even be able to tell its rooted.

Actually, I went ahead and flashed the 3.1 OTA which does indeed return it to stock/unroot as the apps the required root are no longer working. However, you have to do a wipe as well to remove all of your apps/data/etc. Afterwards, I hooked it up to my computer and removed all of the non-stock folders.
I got it from Best Buy and since I'm a premiere silver customer, I have 45 days to return with no re-stock fee . Honestly though, I just want a new one.
The only thing I'm not sure on is the recovery. I did not check that to see if it was still CWM or not. I'm guessing they won't even check that though (or hoping rather).

You'll get a blank confused stare if you mention the word recovery. Its good to know that its that easy to unroot. I wonder if odin can remove the custom recovery. I really have little to no knowledge of these things.
You have to ODIN stock recovery as well.

Not familiar with ODIN at all.
Care to explain/shed some light on it ?

lol...True.
So I had them put on the Invisible Shield while I was there (this way I avoided doing it and no finger prints). I let it sit in my office over the weekend then turned it on today. Come to find out, a brand new in box that I have has the locked bootloader . Luckily, I read up on things and have since rooted it.
So let me get this straight, you scratched your device and returned it for a new one? That doesn't seem wrong to you?

First, I scratched nothing. It was in a protective case (Belkin Case) in the same spot overnight not moving. Nothing touched it, nor did anyone. I opened the case (lifted the flap) and there was what looked like a small scratch. As I looked at it more, there seemed to be more of a dent to the scratch than anything. Maybe it was a crack, either way I'm not sure. Regardless, I returned it as in my opinion, this was not caused by me, and was more than likely a defect. This is suppose to be (as I've been told) Gorilla Glass, which I believe is hard to scratch. Nevertheless, my device (which was under coverage/warranty/within return time frame) was flawed and as such returned. If it was something that I had done, things would be different.
Anyways, back on topic (thanks for the de-rail/non-helpful/offtopic post). It was easy enough to un-root and just as easy to get things going to root the new device even though it was locked. Thanks to those who provided useful information .
This looks like a good place for me to ask my question...
I'm getting a used GTab 10.1 (should get it tomorrow) but it's coming rooted and running a custom ROM. I'm a noob when it comes to rooting and romming, especially on tablets. I would really like to unroot and flash it back to stock, but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. The OP said that it was pretty easy, but I'm not sure what I need to do, or what ODIN is, and how that would help me.
If anyone can help me out and give me a few pointers, it would definitely be greatly appreciated.

I recommend reading the sticky thread in the Development section. This will have all the files you need to return the tab to stock. It will also help you with..
What clockworkMod recovery is. How to flash the stock ROM zips, and/or Use the Odin flashing software to flash stock recovery and do a full wipe of the tab.
There are some youtube videos out there as well. Read lots and ask questions!
Also check galaxytabhacks.com. it have videos of rooting, unrooting, installing custom ROMs etc.

Sorry to completely hijack the thread, but I've got everything I need downloaded (I think). Picked up the files for dummies zip in the developer thread and I watched the video on galaxytabhacks.com (and I'll probably watch again). I'm supposed to get the Tab today, so if I have anymore questions, I'll be back here.
Thanks to both of you guys for your advice.

My Galaxy Note (Bell) has a loose micro USB port. It can charge from the wall and is recognized by my pc however I need to prop it up on a slant in order for it to maintain pressure on the cable input, otherwise it will disconnect. It was caused by my dog knocking it off an end table while charging. It's a pain and Samsung has sent me a UPS slip to send it away.
The phone is rooted and this is my first experience with an Android. I've had a good time loading Da_G's kernel, figuring out adb, cwm, dagr8's Saurom and all the rest. However its time to send it back and I really don't know what Samsungs procedures are for a rooted phone. I've loaded the Bell kernel back to the phone but it's not the 100% solution I was looking for so I got frustrated and just went back to where I was already at with Saurom rc4 loaded up and titanium backup now doing it's thing.
Anyone with previous experiences send back a rooted phone for a hardware issue and know their policies?
Is there a step after flashing the bell kernel tar I'm missing?
Thanks

I had to send my Captivate to Samsung for repair. it was rooted and they fixed it without any issues.
Most manufacturers will fix hardware issues clearly not caused by rooting. Of course, no promises.
That's the reassurance I needed. I'll get on with it and send it away tomorrow. I'll report back in a very long 2 weeks...

Best luck.... if you were in America you could just take it to an att store. Just be on a stockish rom and turn it in and they would not notice lol, get another device that day. Idk how things go up in Canada though.
Dont Do It!!!!
I dont know WHY there are people here sending the OP off....EVERYONE KNOWS that if you root it voids your warranty...it doesnt say "It voids your warranty except for hardware issues"
Why set yourself up to be disappointed when you can just revert it back to stock and not worry at all.....people always trying to catch a fool slipping....question is who will be the fool in this scenario????

Well he should revert back to stock for sure but you can't roll back the counter. But as long as your stock they may not look at the counter and just fix the phone. It's been said before, there's no known case of Samsung voiding a warranty because of it.
Dont know how they do it up there but down here on AT&T we have a 30 day return/exchange policy I exercised yesterday in fact, plus a year warranty giving us refurbished phones if anything happens. I know you guys got it a little before us but I would check into this. Go back to stock there's a thread on how to do this in our development section and take it into your local providers store see what happens maybe you'll get lucky and they'll replace it on the spot. Say it was a hardware defect though.

Because in everyone's experience they'll generally fix hardware problems even if you're rooted. Of course they have to, but they tend to. We all said there were no guarantees.

It seems like one does not simply revert back to stock. Admittedly I'm new to this but all I can find in the development forum is the Bell kernel. The full bell system doesn't seem to be up, just the At&T. After a factory reset and old kernal I still have super user loaded and all of the bell bloatware gone. I'm sure with some due diligence I could have made a back up right after my original root but I didn't. Frustrated with the mess I created I just set the phone back up with Saurom the way I liked it.

It's only 14 days here. I've had it since launch on Feb 14th. Bell is synonymous for passing the buck off, contact them online and they tell you to call in, call them and they tell you go into a store, go to a store and they'll tell you to go to the original store of purchase or another another store with a repair tech on duty. Going directly through Samsung has been smooth thus far, I just hope if they have an issue they'll contact me before blowing whistles and charging my bill some erroneous fees.
I got way ahead of myself after receiving my HOX+ for only the difference of my HOX purchase and began to flash the worldwide development exploits to my phone.
I noticed in the TWRP thread, it said ATT users 'may' experience trouble, so I took the risk.
Noticed I couldnt mount system or Cache, did a factory reset before attempting to install SuperSU. Now Im stuck with no OS.
Am I stuck until we get more ATT exploits?
I see no stock ATT software so this leads me to believe I will not be able to see nothing more then the TWRP menu until USA gets on this thing. Correct?
I didnt do a backup.

Not a clever move. I don't know much about the AT&T device, but when I was helping Lloir test the first lot of custom recoveries, I accidently formatted my nand by trying to factory reset. It was easy to rescue for me as I had a RUU to flash. But AFAIK there is none for AT&T. If you have done what I did. I'm afraid your stuck with a brick until Lloir has finished the AT&T recovery and you can flash a custom rom.

I am sorry, but (a big BUT) if you had taken the time to read a little bit through the X+ forum for like 15 minutes, in particular through the recovery threads, you would have learned that the AT&T version is not yet supported.
I am sorry for the trouble that you experience, but it is always better to first understand completely before doing something, in particular with an expensive device like this one.
However, I don't think Lloir is far off of a working recovery.
Thanks man to pro

This is the first time i've jumped the gun like this. I just got so excited when they told me I could bring in my HOX and grab the X+ for only the difference. Out the store I was thinking "4 cores??? Im gonna hack this mother effer, PRONTO!!!"
Got home, saw the TWRP and All in One. I felt like it was a wrap! All in One, IIRC gave not one warning about worldwide vs. ATT, TWRP gave a warning about 'possible' issues. I assumed a misaligned touch screen or the sdcard message he posted or something minor.
It wasnt until I was already done, unlocked, and flashed when I realized I screwed up and started to investigate my mistake.
I am not blaming the devs AT ALL. It is my fault, being on the leecher end of the table, for not being thorough and researching before jumping into something crucial with such a valuable piece of equipment.
I hardly post on XDA, mostly because I have mastered XDA's, as well as Google's search button and end up finding my answer before resorting to wasting space, time, money, and energy on a crap post like this one. This also makes me a leecher, being as I never have anything more to offer. So I want to thank all of the devs for their amazing work throughout these years I've been on XDA and in front of a smartphone

I honestly dont want to risk it, since my phone clearly says its been unlocked all over it! I dont know exactly how strict they are over ATT being as I just transferred from sprint. But at sprint they inspect your phone for about 3 hours before blaming it on you and voiding your warranty.
Great. I, like a dumbass, decided to try and root my new phone without a backup plan. I have had no luck using the XDA video, and now I'm stuck with the "Please select recovery mode in Kies" screen. Kies doesn't recognize it, and I have no way to restore the stock ROM. Is my only option to wait until a stock firmware ROM is released, like it was for sprint?
Based on the information we're currently provided with, I think it'd be safe to say you're screwed for now. Why you would even try to root a device that doesn't currently have any rooting methods is beyond me. You should definitely read up before you try anything you're not sure of.
The only other option you'd have at this point is taking the phone into Verizon, showing them the screen and telling them that this is how it has looked since it came out of the box. Although it's a lie, and you bricked it out of your own neglect, the reps can't really turn you away.
Can you return it?

I did some research, and nobody had any negative things to say about the rooting process, especially with all the videos and forums on it. I searched for how to root the Samsung note 2, versus the model number, which is different for different carriers.

Every carrier is different. You must be new here.
I am new. I have rooted phones before, but never had this problem. Would it be an option to install a custom rom like Cyanogen until there is a public release of the stock firmware?

At this point in time, you can't flash anything, you can't root, and there are no recovery images to return to stock with. You either have to wait it out, or try to exchange it at Verizon.
You can exchange, they will not know the difference

Just take it to Verizon play dumb and get it replaced. It's within the 14 days so it will be swapped on the spot. They wont/don't care what's wrong with it.
The suggestion of just return it to the store, they won't notice, is a really **** move and I'm not saying that in defense of Verizon. I'm saying it that it is things like that that in the end cause more harm to the end user than good. They up costs and add charges, create obscene policies, etc. It may not negatively impact you immediately, but when multiple people do this all over the country it adds up.

Check the development section. There is a leaked ODIN .tar file that you can flash. It is a prerelease, but at least you will have a functioning phone until a proper root/unlock solution is found.

This Odin file fails. It will not flash. Someone was trying to flash it last night with the same screen you are on.
just odin the stock image in the dev section and you will be back up and running...do not I repeat do not anybody try any root methods for the other gn2 variants!

if it fails then your screwed until the latest odin image is release, which im sure wont be too long.

I have to say I agree 100%. If people just used common sense, or read up a bit, situations like these could be entirely avoided.

I'm not saying that everyone should go flash happy, attempt to root without knowing what they are doing destroy their phones and take them back to Verizon then rinse and repeat the process. But there have to be a few that are a tempting to get root for everyone else there is bound to be some hard bricks. Should they be out 700, and that's kinda harsh.
Check out this link for a fixed brick....

But with a little reading in the correct forum, people could avoid owning a $700 paperweight. It's really not that difficult, and any issues that arise from lack of research are due to their own ignorance. I can't feel sympathy for anyone who flashes blindly.

I'm not disagreeing with you. If you do not know what you are doing or if this is your first time you shouldn't be attempting to root an un rooted device. But there will always be those guinea pigs...

This is exactly the reason why everyone else who follows commense is punished with locked bootloader.
After scouring for two days I am just giving up and asking for help. Here is what happened. I have a At&t Galaxy Note. It was rooted but very glitchy. Kept shutting off, weird lines going through the screen, my camera didnt work. I know for that process I did TWRP and cyanogenmod. I went back to att stock from a forum found here. After I did that I had no google apps anywhere. SO my brother found some gapps.zip thing. He put it on my phone after I had restored back to a previous version that did have them. Now my phone wont stay on for longer than a minute. I cant get it to recognize on my computer. So I cant even try to get into it to see if I can fix anything. Everytime I conntect it, a message pops up that says that it cannot install MTP... Even if I restore again, as I have tried. It is still not letting me use it. Then my brother decided to re root it I guess. And that is all well and fine but i still cant use my phone. I saw something about a .zip that removes gapps but I havent been able to use that as my phone just wont install it in recovery mode. Can someone please please help me!!!!

wow. the first few sentences were making sense, then you just lost it grammar wise and lost me. it would have helped knowing what ROM was on your phone. from symptoms it sounds as if t was a 4.2 ROM with no GAPPS and some serious OC/UV issues.
but you lost me with your English and the "TWRP and CYANOGENMOD thingy" i know what they are obviously, but what you did with them is a HUGE guessing game. one person not knowing what they are doing is bad enough, but two of you.......... cant do that man. kind of like masturbating with someone elses hand man. who cleans up the mess.
absolute clean slate is going to be you best option in my opinion. the "Super Everything Thread" is going to be your new best friend.
read it, live it, learn it......................understand it. put yourself in position to help yourself first.
tutorals on YOUTUBE can help too.
can you get DOWNLOAD MODE?
do you have ODIN?
do you have PDA/ TAR files you need?
you may need to re-install the DRIVERS for phone on computer
there is a glossary in Super thread, that is why i capped these words. key points and things you need to do. its a marathon not a sprint.
go slow, one step at time, understand what you are doing. even rehearse it, i did. be confident in what you are doing. make sure you have files for I717.
read the OP's for ROM's
some need GAPPS (4.2) and some don't (4.1.2) or Touchwiz
the new 4.3 will also need GAPPS and there are 4.2 and 4.3 GAPPS. again make sure you have right files. all the more reason to take your time.
and uh, don't just let someone flash whatever on your phone, that's how you get a BRICK.
good luck and let us know.
if i have stated anything wrong, someone else will be buy to correct.
nothing wrong with how i am telling, others just may have shortcuts.
what you do with it is up to you, i just like to understand what i am doing, cause i will have to fix it.
but keep us posted

Im sorry, Im just really frustrated. My phone was working fine yesterday and now its a very expensive paperweight. And not only that but Im having problems with my laptop. Apparently the hard drive just went clonkers for no reason and now I have to put in a new one. Yes I can get into download mode. Yes I have Odin. Yes I have the PDA/TAR files. I made sure everything was for the sgh i717. I read each process ten times before I did it. I installed my drivers from the Samsung website. I think my problem is that the internal sd card isnt being recognized. When I go into recovery mode, which is CMW btw, it gives me an eemc 07 error message and says it cant mount. When I can get my phone to stay on long enough for thecpu to recognize it it doesnt say sd card just phone memory. I will be sure to read the super everything thread. As for a ROM there isnt one on here. If I try to put one one it wont install and keeps saying that eemc 07 error message. Thanks for responding. Im spiraling in self-pity right now but im determined to get my phone back.
If you get it back to stock, do a complete erase/format, and your still having all these glitches, there's a good chance there's hardware issues. Especially if your not able to see the external SD card etc.
If your the original owner (I.E. you got it from a dealer with a plan), and you can get your counter reset to 0 on stock with these issues still showing up, it might be easiest to take it in and get a replacement. That is, if you have a warranty option available.

Its not the external sd but the internal one. Its just gone... I know that this is the problem at this point. But I have no idea how to resolve that issue. I have no idea where it is or how to get it back. I have been on xda and droidforums for an extreme amount of time trying to find a solution but nothing going. The only way I have seen to reset my counter is to use triangle away. As I cannot even use my phone due to freezing and restarting I cannot even install that app. I am hoping that one person in the wide world has had this problem and fixed it and will read this and tell me how to fix it.
Status 7 means you need to update you recovery

so where are you at then?
what does your phone show as running?
settings/about phone
are you just going to leave it or are you still going to pursue customizing?

I'm running 4.1.2 now. I will not be customizing like that for some time. I might think about it later but I'm so glad to have it back I'm just going to enjoy it for awhile.

you know, something going wrong with mine was my biggest worry. when I decide to screw something up, I can really screw something up. so I was very hesitant. it probably took me 2-3 months to get the courage to flash. but that was most likely a good thing. it made me be very thorough in the process.
all I am saying is don't let it completely discourage you. you have time.
glad you got phone back, I know it can be a bit of a scary thing. I have come across an issue or two myself and actually surprised myself by fixing myself. actually a pretty good feeling.
anyway, stick around, there are some pretty amazing folks here.

I had made a back up before the first time I flashed a rom. I had successfully used it to restore, but one time it just took forever to restore and then it wouldn't boot. TWRP then wanted a password, because the rom hadn't booted, the only solution I found was to format data, which killed my back up. Is there a flashable stock rom I can use to return my phone to factory settings. I don't care if it is ICS or JB, but I need it to not be custom. My USB is messed up and I am almost out of warranty. Need to take phone for service tomorrow, and don't want them to see a custom rom running. I've done this before with no prob, even though tech you void your warranty, in practice, they don't much check beyond cursory look. Please help if you can.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Is there a way of making the recovery original (or at least appear that way) and then later go back to the way it was, where I could flash, without having to repeat the whole process. If they can't or won't fix my USB, I won't be able to connect a usb cable which, if I remember, I had to do to root my phone. Not sure if I asked the question the right way, but I just want to make sure I don't get stuck in 4.1 if they deny my claim. I am right at the end of my 1 yr warranty and wouldn't want to pay for a repair. No sure I am asking the right way? Thanks again for the help.

I wouldn't know of a way to do that, but the replacement part is cheap.

Thanks again. I'm going to see if I can get them to do it. If that fails I may try to fix it on my own. Don't have soldering equipment or know how, so I'd be nervous about possibly screwing the whole thing up, but if it looked simple enough, I might try it, especially if it would save me some money.

The part is the whole assembly and probably has a ribbon connection. The pictures in the manual are too small to tell on my phone and I didn't get around to reading any of it.
On the last day of my warranty, they gave me a new phone, due to the USB not working!! Happy!
