2.3.4 update? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK i am on gingerbread 2.3.3 and KE7 italian sgs2.
I can't seem to find any info on the new android 2.3.4 update and how to do a non wipe update.
I've downloaded the files but i don't know what to do with them.
Also, if i update, will it wipe the root? Will my italian language swype be deleted? Will anything else be deleted?
Thanks and sorry if this question bothers anyone but i tried going through most forums and couldn't find much.
Thanks,

If you have downloaded the files then use Odin and flash, afaik, you only need to flash the PDA file and nothing else. But I can't be sure that if it will wipe your data or not. Some says it deleted all data, some says not.
But upgrading via Kies will NOT delete any data. After any firmware flash your root will be lost, so you need to re-root.
Regards.

Ok...but if I re root will titanium backup re appear with all its settings or will I have to re install it?
Will my italian swype keyboard still be installed?

You'll need to reinstall it.
2.3.4 seems to include Swype v3, but I don't know whether it supports Italian - I'd be surprised if it didn't. Your settings will need to be restored via Titanium.

Ok. I did everything. Updated and rooted.
I can confirm that swype has italian even though it has changed a bit. It doesnt have a popup window when you need to choose a word out of a list. I think it's just stock swype.
Titanium backup REMAINED INSTALLED i just had to root again to be able to use it. It even kept my frozen apps in memory without needing to backup anything.

Congrats, you've done everything successfully then.
Glad to hear that Swype has updated to version 3.0. You can always enable the Word Choice Window by enabling it from Swype settings, of course if it is there.
So does the accuracy of Swype improved? I mean I find it hard to type some words, like OR, OUT, That's, I could never typed them on the previous version, i.e- 2.72.
Thanks in advance.

Quick question about the ota?

I rooted my Vibrant using the one click lag fix in the android market. When i heard about the ota i removed the lag fix and unrooted my phone. When i was rooted i used Titanium Backup to delete Telenav Gps, and Amazon Mp3. Would This Cause any problems when i update? Those were the only bloatware apps i removed everything else is completely stock. I know i can get amazon from the market but what about telenav? Im confused
The ota should reinstall telanav shouldnt be a problem ... Or you can always reflash jdf, thru odin...
What is jfd? Sorry but im not all that smart when it comes to android, im studying to try and learn everything. I downloaded the vibrant dump and i have all the original apk's that came with the phone. Is it possible to push them back to the system/apps folder? If so how?

Miui 1.9.2.3- No Root!

Ok, I had been running miui v1.9.3.0 but it had too many glitches and bugs, so I downgraded to v1.9.2.3 and soon realized that titanium backup no longer works, due to no root access. I've gone into superuser and turned on the superuser permissions, i've tried reflashing, rebooting, using Odin and going back to stock and reflashing... everything! But whenever I use titanium backup, "no root access"! What happened?! Please, someone help...

remove everything and anything that relates to superuser. use rootexplorer or something and search it, and then remove everything, and then odin.
Then root using superoneclick or something like that.
That may do the trick.
maybe you had like a bad binary or something? idk
Can you tell me the directories to look for?

I honestly don't know either, i'd just search the whole phone. Remove anything with superuser on it.

Grrrr... I still can't find any SU related files and folders and I have a question. Shouldn't using Odin to go back to stock fix this issue? I've repeatedly flashed back to stock in hopes of resolving this issue but none of my attempts worked...

ADDITIONAL INFO: Also, the reason for this issue could be because I tried to update superuser with an app in the market and another bit of info is that although Titanium Backup and some other root apps don't work, SetCPU and a few other root apps do work. So I'm in a vey confusing situation.

Oh...
Uhm, a question, the stock odin files that you have, are they TOTAL stock? like no root? or is it one of the rooted ones?
Can you go back into the market, go into superuser, and try to uninstall it? or go into settings>applications> and then go into superuser and it should say like undo update or something? Maybe those can fix?
Has titanium backup been allowed superuser before? Has SetCPU been allowed superuser before? If it has been done before, that may be why some work and some don't.
Yes, they should be totally stock. I downloaded them from "s15274n". And also, I'm not sure if you're familiar with MIUI but it has its own version of superuser that comes with it that's different from the one downloaded from the market... So this is a very confusing problem... Also, Titanium did work before and I never had issues until I tried updating the SU bianary and busybox. It seems as if odin isn't cleaning up everything, but I'm not sure... I made a big mistake thinking that the market SU app could update MIUI's SU bianary and now I can't seem to truly start from scratch...
This is a feature, I assume, as MIUI will soon be preinstalled on phones (MI-One). All you need to do is go into the Super User app after flashing MIUI, hit menu -> settings (I think) and check to enable root.
No ODIN, no reflash, just that. It's not just the Vibrant, and I think it's the new norm for MIUI.
That's the thing though, I've already turned on superuser in it's settings. I'm not sure what to do...

Then that's just weird. Try reverting a few weeks? I understand the last 2-3 weeks has been pretty bad.
uninstall Titanium Backup and Reinstall Via Market. Titanium can bug out when you restore it via backup or when you try using it after a OS update
also verify your Superuser App (the one thats preinstalled in Miui) Has both "Manage Permissions, and Root Permissions" Enabled

he prob. Forgot to enable root permissions.
Actually, I did have root permissions enabled. But when I restored titanium and other root apps with miui's built in backup/restore utility I guess it just made them glitchy. Uninstalling and reinstalling all the apps that need root solved the problem. Thanks "boystuff"!

As the previous poster said, you can just download another browser app from the market. Your phone does not depend on the browser app for a data connection. If for some reason you can't do that:
Check the I9k forums and find a CWM flashable, stock ROM. Download it, use 7zip or winrar (or any other windows archive program- google search 7zip, its free to download) and open the ROM file. Go to: system/app. Find browser.apk and extract it to your desktop. Use adb to install it: adb push /system/app/browser.apk and you should be all set.
thanks for that did kinda help...is there anyway i can just remove everything on the phone and re install everything....kinda like re-booting with all the preloaded samsung apps...regardless if i deleted some or not?

No, not really. You would need to reflash the stock system image. Factory resets just wipe user settings, app data, and other stuff like that. It won't restore anything. If you want to do a reinstall, look into using Odin to flash back to stock. Just BE CAREFUL. Odin can brick you if you don't know what you're doing. Better off following the steps I outlined, or installing CWM and flashing a stock ROM. Again, the safest way to do what you want is what I previously posted.
if i updated through kies not a month or 2 ago and im using an australian SGS GT I9K 16BG with optus what would i be running (eg...gingerbread, Eclair, Kernal, Froyo)?
just get an market apk file n install

Swype version

I made a huge mistake trying to update to a new version of swype to see if it would respond better instead I got a version that it not compatible with my phone it is very small not even half the screen. Can somebody post the apk please the one that came with the evo 4g lte. Thanx
Nevermind figured it ok. If anybody if updates swype you can go back in to apps and uninstall the updates. It will return it back to the orginal swype version.
How did u update it in the first place? Are U trying to get Swype beta on it?

I am very interested in how to load swype beta to replace the pre-installed version. Swype bets on my OG was awesome. No matter what I do, it always fails at the licensing step.
I have tried the various suggestions that deal with using root explorer to delete existing files, including files in davlik cache. When I install swype, however, it still seems to know about the previous install despite erasing all the swype related filed i could find and rebooting. During install it asks me if I want to replace the system app, to which I respond yes. But if I deleted the files and rebooted, hoe does it know? At the licensing step, it just hangs forever.
Has anyone figured out how to do this?

I did this the other day, very easy. Same way I did this on eVo 3d. I should have explained this.
Go in root explorer.
Go to system/app
Make sure it's r/w
delete Swype apk
Exit
Install Swype installer, sign in, download, and finish setup.
Restore just Swype data through titanium backup to get your personal dictionary back. Enjoy
edit: PS, if U every get force closes, uninstall in settings and reinstall through Swype installer.
Swyped from my eVo
Update: this time I got a message at the beginning of the installer that said Sorry Swype beta is unavailable for devices with swype preinstalled.
_________
Did all of that and more, including removing lib files and files from caches. Will give it another go.

Haven't tried yet or anything but could you use a titanium backup from your old phone and just install the app? I have no idea if it would work or not.

Am getting ready to go through this process. I'm rooted with Zedomax's method but have not yet installed a custom recovery (kinda waiting for a few more options to come along, would love to see an Amon-Ra recovery or the like).
In any case, since I can't make a nandroid backup of my device first, I want to be careful about this install. To that end, if this Swype Beta install gets hosed, will I be able to easily return to the pre-installed Swype and if so how, is returning that deleted Swype.apk to the system directory and/or rerunning it sufficient? I'd hate to think I could screw things up to the point where I no longer have even the pre-installed version of Swype. ETA: I have Titanium Backup so possibly restoring from there if it gets hosed?
You also mention r/w for the /system directory, which I know how to enable through ES File Explorer. At what point can the /system directory be returned to r/o? Is it sufficient to do so at the end of the install and registration process or is there something else that needs to happen before re-enabling r/o for /system?

How to reinstall stock samsung packages

All,
I am an idiot. Last weekend I rooted my Galaxy S2 and was really happy that everything worked well. Yesterday morning I removed some packages which I thought are not required using Titanium backup without making a backup of them before!
That was in fact a big mistake, what's now happening is that after system reboot a popup appears telling me:
process com.sec.android.socialhub was terminated unexpectedly and what's even worse when I start the stock email application (com.android.email) it is terminated, too.
I need that program to connect to my work, they check remotely what application is used.
So my question to you guys is:
how can I find out what I need to reinstall, where do I get it and how can I reinstall it?
Any hints are greatly appreciated, thanks a lot.

No, all the data is gone but the problem is still there. Obviously, not all the packages are reinstalled automatically after a factory reset. Is there a way of forcing that?
Please help, I am totally lost.
Unfortunately no as you have found out factory reset just deletes data for all applications but doesn't reinstall anything you may have deleted.
Only thing I can think of is to find a copy of the stock Rom you are on that matches your current version and flash that.
I assume you have an S2 based on the info you posted, try the link below and you should be able to find something that helps:
