Best Rom/Kernel - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm about to get a X10 from a friend of mine, and was curious about what the best rom/kernel for the phone is.
So far it looks like cyanogen mod 7.0 is going to be the best thing I could flash it with, but it kinda bugs me that the camera doesn't work 100%.
I'm also hearing that 2.3 will be officially released soon, but knowing how my carriers usually operate with updates that will be 3 months till I see that.
Whats the closest thing to a vanilla android experience with full functionality?
or what Rom/Kernel are you using and why?

Wolfbreaks 009 isnt quite vanilla but is my favorite thus far. Has some new ported gingerbread features from achotjan and it's speed is unreal. I use it with the 3.62 kernel by goro, doomlords, and zkernel are all amazing. Just amazing all around, and if not that use erickwill's 2.1 ROM. When gingerbread comes out the camera drivers will be ported to gingerbread ROMs so you shouldnt worry about not getting a working 2.3 ROM

good to know.

If you're looking for some extra speed, take a look at Power To The People kernel. Overclocked to 1.2GHz, but might cause some instability, and fry the device if used for a long time.

I wouldn't want to overclock.
I don't see the point in doing it on smartphones, especially when the battery life is already low.
Right now im leaning towards cyanogen or ultima 4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095637
just finished rooting it, now im running titanium backup.

Then for kernel you might want to check out zKernel-failsafe, no overclock, no underclock. Stable and fast. The stock kernel is slow.

Just testeds both Wolf's and Ultima 5... got some tiny issues with 3G band on Ultima and I wasnt able to open the NFS Drift Game in both of them...
Tryed CM7 + custom Kernel with a good response, all of this using BB 67. The only trouble I got with CM7 was the slow response from GPS...
I might go back to Stock Eclair + custom Kernel till the update comes out...

I was looking at the CM7 Rom but was afraid that everything would be slow/laggy on the xperia.

[Q] Speed on custom roms vs standard?

Hi,
I've been considering installing a custom froyo rom on my Hero, currently running the standard 2.1 sense rom from HTC.
I'm mostly concerned with speed and stability. So will the overall speed of my phone be better with a custom rom (as 2.2 generally is faster than 2.1), will it run smoother, scroll smoother? And how the stability on the current roms?
Can you maybe recommend one?
I'm not so much interested in the new features, but mostly on the speed of the device. So what would you recommend?
I rooted my phone the day I got it back in August 09 and have no regrets at all.
The devs who create the ROMs and custom kernals are usually very good at optimising them better than HTC themselves, so yes... chances are high you will see a big improvement in speed and stability. It doesn't even have to be Froyo.
You do have to be prepared to do a lot of reading and try a few different ROMs and set-ups to get the best out of your device though, but the end result will be worth it.
As for what ROM to go for. I've stuck with VillainROM 12 (Android 2.1) since it was released as it does exactly what I need it to and seems to be very stable. With Flykernal 12-pre2 it's is also very fast, although it was fast enough anyway.
I've never really been tempted by any 2.2 ROMs to be honest. I've tried most of them out but not enough to give any recommendations. Give me a 2.2 Sense ROM with Tristan's SenseVillain theme and I'll happily say good bye to VR12 though.
So, my suggestion to you would be (all at your own risk obviously):
Root it, do a Nandroid back-up, find a decent ROM, flash flykernal, download SetCPU from the Market and then just have a play about until you have a nice mix of speed and stability.
For detailed instructions of each step check the FAQs and guides in the Hero Development section
Yeah I do understand that it will take some time etc for finding roms and all. I've earlier installed custom roms on older windows mobile devices
Anyone can recommend a froyo rom then? It should be faster than a 2.1 rom I would guess. I can live without sense
Floyo 1.2.0 and Flykernal 12-pre2 would be a good place to start your testing then.
Also look into FroydVillain 1.7.2 or even CyanogenMod-6.1, which most non-Sense ROMs will be based on.
Have fun

[Q] Alternative to FroydVilllain 1.7.2

I currently have FroydVillain 1.7.2 rom on my phone.
I want to try something else because I had some problems with it.
Sometimes the phone is laggy, the messages load time is really slow, sometimes I don't get call and can't make them( ex: someone call me and it does the same thing as if my phone was closed), youtube problems and many other things.
Still there is some things I like about it, the quality of the camera(not really the interface), the easy user interface ( don't really like that half circle in other version), and other things.
So for a guy like me, who dosen't use his phone to play with it or you know, mess with the cpu (and other things like that) what other rom would you advise me.
(I would still like to have something with Android version 2.2.1 or newer, don't know the difference between each but I don't want to have less options or I don't know what)
Thanks.
+ The battery die fast.
In my opinion floyo 1.2 is the best 2.2 rom. no matter what i flash i always end up coming back to it.
I'm using Elelinux's latest Hero ROM, which is very smooth and stable so far. Also, since it's based on CM7 (Android 2.3), you can theme the hell out of it if you like.
Compared to the FroydVillains I've used in the past it maybe isn't quite as fast, but the difference is minimal. Although if you really need some speed, this 2.2-based rom is probably the way to go.
Try some of the latest Gingerbread ROMs. Very smooth and good battery life. If you absolutely must have Froyo, you're not going to find much that improves on what you've already got.

Cronos is another good Gingerbread ROM as well.
my choice:
2.1 : Sense rom for sure, elelinux's repack is good
2.2 : floyo 1.2, really great!
2.3 : elelinux's one, but with andriod 2.3.2 or before
going to try out the new android 2.3 with sense! hope i will stick on it after
you could try out the wildfire port of gingerbread with sense 2.1. its really cool and quite smooth!
Nothing better than nightly CyanogenMod 7.1! No more invisible menus and it is fast loading ^^

[Q] Reasons to upgrade to a custom ROM

So what are the greatest reasons users upgrade their ROM to a custom one?
One reason that held me from flashing a custom ROM is that i use the camera a lot.
Should i upgrade to a 2.2??
Thanks!

You could always just try a 2.2 rom or two. If you dont like them, you can always go back to stock. You will get different opinions from everyone, so its best to experiment yourself.

Yea there are a few select 2.2 ROMs which have a fully functional camera. And like Patchy said you could always flash back if you aren't satisfied. I was a little hesitant at first to flash ROMs, but now I'm a flash junky =)
See for urself.
Play asphalt 5 or any 3D game on stock 2.1
See how much it lags
Upgrade to a 2.2 (wolbreak preferbally) or 2.3.3 rom
Play Asphalt 5
See how smooth it is.
Thats the difference

He seems yo be more reliant on his camera. Therefore, id personally recommend staying on stock and doing some mods to it.

why? wolfbreaks cam is fine..
2.1 sucks balls, I couldn't imagine going back to it, even fully optimized it is twice as slow as 2.2

I disagree. Wolfs cam might be fine but stock is definetly better, no question.
As far as speed, im on 2.1 and have been for a while now, with my own mods and cleanup there is absolutely no lag, and i find it just as fast and smooth as 2.2 roms right now. However, i dont play games, so there could be a difference there. Everything else tho, not much different.

Yeh the camera in 2.2 is a boo. Unless you live with vignette.
Speed up your rom then by deleting useless sytem apps\

You might also want to change the looks of the 2.1 ROM, which i find quite ugly
Bitsnacker Theme

Yah also did all the enhancements including the JIT v2. fastest ive got on a quad is 760 and an mflops of 36.. i think ill just wait for the official 2.3..
offtopic: which is the fastest launcher? im currently using the Arc launcher..
i also want to mod it to an AOSP, but i dont want all the images of my contacts getting deleted..
LauncherPro works best for me.
Have you added these lines to your build.prop?
Code:
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=26
persist.sys.use_dithering=1
First one makes scrolling smoother, 2nd helps with graphics (especially gradients, etc.) a bit
Installing an AOSP-looking theme shouldn't mess with your contacts if that's what you want...
I've been using a 2.2 rom since z started developing his free x10, but to be honest it's only because I can... once you root your phone it's a natural step. The major plus is ability to use flash

Thanks im going to add that!
No i meant like deleting all the bloatware.
Ive used just about every 2.2 rom available and my biggest concern was the camera, on 2.1 it worked nicely and I hadnt modded it. To be honest, I like the camera on wolfbreaks the best I think it takes great pictures and more consistant than my 2.1 was, almost no audio lag in the camcorder. Im currently using the pzafroyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033455 rom and its the best 2.2 IMO wolfbreaks a close second, everything works great, and it has the best camcorder near zero lag (need to change the heap size from 40 to 32 seems to help). To answer your question, IMO 2.2 is worth having for the speed, flash player, additional options, and of course theres some sweet 2.2 roms to choose from . Though my 2.1 is still silky smooth and works great too, benchmark 842, pzafroyo benchmark 2595 both feel smooth.
Upgrading to 2.2 will give you:
- speed boost
- more apps, for ex. Flash player
Rooting the phone also gives me the chance to try any custom rom... so I never get tired of the interface.
This is my opinion... you don't know what it tastes like until you try it.

Been using various 2.2.1 Custom ROM. Of those I like Wolfbreak 6.1.3 v64 the most. Since moving back to 2.1, I use the custom rom EWJET which in my opinion the best. At least I am more confident with the camera. The autofocus dont work with 2.2.1, hence I moved back to 2.1.

Best Rom/ theme?

What do you think is the best rom/ theme in our opinions and why?
Keep the speed, looks, features, etc. in mind!
Thanks.
I've landed on Calkulin+Clemsyn 1.5ghz Froyo Combo VERSION 6 (1.2 Boot Loader)
It's overclocked to 1.5ghz and runs smoother than anything I've played with yet. It's based on the stock rom but obviously modified to remove the crap. The stock rom has some nice features which you miss out on when moving to a more phone oriented version of froyo or ginger. Little things like the way combo boxes display on websites...
The battery life is surprisingly good. Feels as good as Vegan or TNT Lite to me, and I haven't yet delved into undervolting.
I've used every rom out there except the honeycomb ones. I am currently using vegan ginger oc to 1.2ghz. That said, the one that has the best performance has to be calkulin+clemsyn oc to 1.2ghz hands down.
I say 1.2 ghz instead of 1.5ghz is because I'm putting into account the battery performance. Calkulin's rom is already really really fast without oc. Everything about it is just smooth as hell. In fact, I think I'll go back to calkulin+clemsyn oc combo later this week. For me, performance beats the latest and greatest.
well thanks a bunch guys guess thats how I'm starting off once i root this baby
Any themes to lay accross it?
I've tried all of them 1.1 and 1.2 opted for Beasty's ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084573). I recently tried G-Harmony Gingerbread 2.3.4 but it seemed slow and experienced unexpected FCs but the potential for USB GPS use forces me to keep an eye on that release. Until then, I'll stick with Beasty's ROM.
I've been patiently waiting for a reasonable Honeycomb ROM like everyone else here seems to be. Tried to get Illuminated, but the WiFi never worked for me, no matter what fixes I tried. I ended up (happily) with Bottle of Smoke 4.1 which still has a few minor issues, but it is a welcome change from the stock Tap-N-Taps I have been living with. Now that Viewsonic has clearly abandoned us, I fealt it was due time to hit the Custom ROMs and for now BoS is acceptable for my everyday use. (Fixes will come in time)
raskell, I, too, have been interested in the Illuminate ROM and was close to giving it a spin tonight but the feedback I've read gave me enough reason to hang tight with Beasty. It does seem the HC choices are getting more and more stable, though. The community effort for this is unreal.

[Q] Most Stable working Rom

Everyone's got an opinion on the "Best" rom, I just wanted to see which rom the forum thinks is the most stable with everything working.
I've tried lots of them and cant decide.
Obviously, it is Wolfbreak's rom. hands down.
T.A.E.M rom is great i think its better then wolfbreak's rom

In my opinion, on the sum of parameters, now the best ROM is ThGo2, v10
MIUI is best...
I have found Oodie's CM ROM has been great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384147
Battery life is good as is the stability.
for further stability, any stock se 2.3.3 rom ( locked and unlocked bootlaoder)
custom:
miui- oodies light version, also i used tripndroid rom which was pretty stable as well..u can find this one in modaco
cm7- zmods 2.3.5

ohh you're damn right. for me, that is the best of the best. REALLY THE BEST.
@deckerm, if you want a recommendation from me, try ThGo2. There is a new version, the v13, but a bootmanager kernel needs to be fixed. but there's a stable version of the rom, just look at it, and you will look happy.
but for the majority of the people here in the forum, Wolfbreak's rom is the one.
but for me, hands down. ThGo2 rom. ^^
I like EWJet, its super fast and everything is working great!

Stock rom: Wolf, ThGo2 and ... ----- stable and can be fast with custom kernel
cm rom: FXP is ****ing fast, MIUI has greate UI.
For long term stability, Wolf is the rom. T.E.A.M. is good, too. Currently using prime, no problems except the ones I create. Any rom must settle some and although our phones are X10, they can react differently to the same rom. For your poll, Wolf will probably be on top.
I totally agree!! For me Wolf's Rom gives me best stability & fastest Gingerbread Rom I tried so far!!!
Only thing I regret is not having anything to flash no more :'(
Great Rom!!!!
Sent from my X10 using Wolf's Gingerbread UB
I like TEAM.
I started to have stability problems with Wolf's rom after 1.5 mo of use w/o flashing (stuck on start-up after reboot, stuck in airplane mode). I switched over to TEAM for the last 3 mo. and no stability problems and speed is good. Then again everyone's phone reacts differently due to settings & apps, so I say try one, and if it doesn't work, try another.
MIUI Prime for me the best rom I had before. Very stable, nice and long battery life (about 3-5 days with 2G only, synch off, brightness 40%).
Oodies CM7 for me. Great battery life and smooth running.
wolf's ROM does not really give the best battery life possible.... I'm still looking for a ROM that can give best battery life.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Probably not but I don't think that any Rom can make my battery last much longer!! My battery normally lasts about a day, while heavy usage!! I Also calibrated it.
If you want your battery to last for a long time, I'd suggest to buy a larger battery, that's just my opinion.

Totaly agree im a cyanogenmod guy because i like the twaeks and extras and overall i don´t like wolfs WLAN instability for me again and again WLAN rips of deactivate its selfs and so on... additional if you using ttorrent you can forget wolfs rom also MUIU Prime because WLOD.
Needles to say that Wolfbreak and Oodie did a ****ing great job on this rom´s but i don´t like how MUIU looks like Iphone or BADA. Because why did we buy an android device? because it has to look like ab Iphone? Well...
FXP 7.2 is very stable and if ya a gamer... well the quadrant score for me with 245- 1037 with governor Interactiv was over 1300
many great games run smooth for example: Dead speace for android, Thirdblade and asphalt 5 runs great lags are possible yeah but very rare
