Dont think it is possible, the phone needs special hardware to make it work

are you talking about using your phones internet connection on your computer (usb tethering)?

[Answered] NT USB port unusable at this time...right?

I presume the usb port of the NT is unusable until a kernel level root is developed. If someone would confirm for the hell of it, please do! (I grabbed a couple usb to micro-usb converters - but, no luck...)
I didn't research the usability until after I tried using the usb port! I figured it would be enabled... why not allow a keyboard, etc.? Anyway, that explains why I couldn't find out the 'port type' in the official specs (micro usb).
Read some stuff on the Nook Color - and I believe the usb is available for it when rooted.

USB host mode is part of the android kernel since gingerbread but the ROM has to support it.
Cheers!

by unusable do you mean like not working or can't be connected to the computer
to root and debugging?
if you are... what the hell are you smoking?
please elaborate a little more as to unusable

I think he means, it can't be used to plug a keyboard in?
USB host mode is not supported in the stock B&N os.

Yeah - I guess as a USB host is the terminology I needed. I'm rooted - so, the Nook works fine as a device on my PC!
I just want to run devices from the Nook itself - particularly keyboard and game controllers (ps3).
It never occurred to me that it wouldn't function 'out of the box.' The only reason I can see to deny it is either battery drain or to guard against hack attempt. Pretty lame really!

Do you think it might be possible to replace elements using root to enable it?
Barring that, in one dev thread or another, I vaguely remember reference to a particular way of bypassing the bootloader lock, that if it worked would allow us to use custom ROMs but we'd be stuck with the B&N kernel. Does that sound familiar? What I'm really asking to anyone who might feel they know, is what are the odds the devs might crack USB host even if they can't get past the bootloader lockout?
Thanks to anyone with information.
Once this is enabled we wont just be able to use a keyboard, but also use it to browse your camera pictures, hard drives, etc

Cyanogenmod has USB host enabled. You could ask a cm dev how it is done. Dalingrin works on the Nook Color port, he may be able to tell you.

Yes. Once host mode is enabled you will have access to HID and mass storage. I have both on these on my ATRIX.

Amaze as USB plug-in?

So I just saw a tweet about how on a SGS2 you can use a Samsung cord and are thus able to plug in USB devices. I had no idea you could do that, I knew with the Galaxy Nexus you could, but not the SGS2.
Is there any similar thing for the Amaze that anyone had heard of?

Are you talking about the USB micro/mini plug turning into a USB host port instead of a client port?
there have been hack up's for this since the N1 that even let you run a USB video card off of it (with a power adapter hacked into the USB line tho)... like this http://sven.killig.de/android/N1/2.2/usb_host/

Yea, that's what I'm talking about, but looking around online about the SGS2 all you need is that OTG cable and it works. This solution looks fairly intense, with changing the kernel and editing scripts... Thanks anyways, at least we know it's possible.
@faux said the USB OTG code is missing in the HTC kernel. so, either htc or someone write some code in the kernel or it won't happen.
Not sure if the Telus kernel is different but using the stock .config file, it seems OTG is enabled.
OTG support for Qualcomm on-chip USB controller (USB_MSM_OTG_72K) is what is enabled.

[Q] USB to Ethernet

How hard would it be to get something like this to work with the Rezound?
I know with the Galaxy Nexus you can plug a microUSB to USB adapter in and use flash drives and external hard drives if you're using the right kernel.
I'm wanting something like this because it would be nice to plug into the network at work and ping printers and stuff like that with my phone instead of finding a computer and logging in.

Not in Gingerbread
USB host mode is only supported in Honeycomb or above, so this won't be possible without ICS on this phone.
I'm not sure if anyone has made an ICS kernel that supports USB host mode.
Also, in addition to compatible software, the phone also needs compatible hardware, which the Rezound might not have.
If you don't have wireless access buy an airport express.

Apparently Chainfire tested a bunch of devices and listed the Rezound as incompatible.
http://usbhost.chainfire.eu/
He tested both Gingerbread and ICS, and none of them worked.
(Although those are all probably stock or modified Sense kernels, so maybe there's hope for AOSP? )

How?
He said USB to Ethernet. Apparently he only has a hard wire connection. So, buy an airport express to make that hardwire wireless.

It doesn't totally defeat the purpose, but considerably complicates things. I'd sooner carry a laptop than break out a wireless router, fire it up, make sure it won't interfere with anything on the wired or wireless side (could be tough to do if you have to log in wireless), then ping/ssh/<your-protocol-here> through that device to get to the device I'm looking for.
With a USB dongle, plug it into the phone, into the wall, and do what you need to do.
Yeah the USB thing would be nice.
You are over complicating the router. Most routers are plug and play nowadays so Ethernet into existing network, and power is all you need with wireless freedom.
It would be even more to carry with me and more money than I'm willing to spend. I was just curious to know how hard it would be to plug my phone straight into the network so I can ping printers or telnet into stuff at work

Ethernet word be nice, but it doesn't exist. I was just providing an alternative.
I would be careful about plugging things into the work network. Some IT managers are rather...protective of their domains and set up extensive security, to the point where the particular port you plug into may shut down if it recognizes an unauthorized device. I work for the Marine Corps, and aside from the fact it's a punishable offense to connect an unauthorized device to the Navy/Marine Corps Intranet (and attached information systems), the switches will immediately disable a port with an unrecognized device connected.

can the x2 be a USB host?

A) does our phone have to ability to be a usb host?
B) If not, is it because of hardware limitations or software?
C) if software, how can we fix it?
I'd like to use a usb mic with my phone, but I'm not sure it will work/how to get it to work, so I thought I might ask the geniuses here
Thanks in advance
Probably works for storage devices if you use a powered hub and CM9 Rom, but I doubt it will work for audio.
Why in the world would you use a USB mic anyway?

MicroUSB to Ethernet?

Is this possible on the z2??
Want to connect my z2 to my guest network at work but wifi is not an option
Can anyone confirm this works?
No but USB teathering works which is the next closest thing.
What does that consist of? I'm a nooB
Just want to hook ethernet into my phone to save on dat data!

Oh you mean transfer to your phone
I dont actualy know, probably best using some sort of mini wifi hub that connects to what ever you want

I think usb reverse tethering is also possible but in this case you need a computer and I think it is not very simple to use.
Using a computer as a WiFi hub is probably an option too but I don't think all the hardware/software support that.

Hardware support for that isnt common but for example i can connect my phone to a wifi net and then share that wifi connection via usb teathering which is the closest i got to this

That's a good idea, but will the software accept an incoming internet connection through the usb port?
you can use applications to turn your laptop in a wireless hotspot.
1) you hook your pc to an ethernet cable
2) run and start the application
and voila...you have wifi for your mobile
you may use Virtual Router
