Can galaxy tab play mkv files? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im buying a tab in like 2 or 3 hours and i found out the old galaxy tab can play mkvs but there is no info on the 10. 1
If it can, can someone tell me how well it runs
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

The stock player doesnt read mkv but if you encode in mp4 it'll play HD videos well
For mkv there is a video player called Diceplayer that can play them
Sent from my galaxy tab 10.1

Aww that sucks
If i push the galaxy tab original's video played to system/app will it work
And does this dice player have to lag?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

okay i just tried to play a 720p MKV with subtitles on Diceplayer and it plays fine & on sync !
no installing the apk wont help since its a CPU limitation problem
if think you'll be fine with stock player + Diceplayer

K thx

I heard this from a lot of people, but I tried it on a simple MOV file (several actually, although from the same site) and it opens, runs for 3 seconds or so, then pauses. After a short while it then force closes?!?
I'm on stock 16GB, am I missing a setting somewhere?

Diceplayer works great

Moboplayer doesn't play 720p for me without lagging. Everything else works fine though.

Only diceplayer can play 720p mkv high profile, without any lags. Still no go for .avi or 1080p mkv or mp4.

Es file managers video player and Vplayer play pretty much everything I've tried so far and stream perfectly from my goflex satellite...

You can use the MoboPlayer. I have converted some HD 1080P MKV videos via the Brorsoft Video converter, and all of them work well. But there is one thing you need to know: the channel shoule bd stereo.
Hope it can help you solve your problem.

Get the diceplayer, now it handles almost all formats without any lags an it supports AC3 and dts audio without any issues. The videos are super smooth and it uses hardware acceleration. There's a 3 days trial available to test if it can play what you are looking for.

dice player works smooth on some MKV files I play, an others, very laggy like the others.
Im starting to think that it may have to do with the encoding of the audio/video

Play MKV/AVI/MOV/ iTunes movies on Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1
Galaxy Tab 2 doesn't support all MKV format playback, the codec must be H.264/AAC or AC3. If your Galaxy Tab 2 can't play some MKV files, you can convert MKV video to H.264/AAC MP4 video for playing MKV movies on Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1. Aovsoft Video Converter is your best choice. With Aovsoft Video Converter Ultimate, you can convert all formats to Galaxy Tab 2, such as convert MKV to Galaxy Tab 2, convert AVI to Galaxy Tab 2, convert MOV to Galaxy Tab 2 etc. If you want to play iTunes movies on Galaxy Tab 2, Aovsoft Media Converter can give you hand.

MX player isn't mentioned. It will also play just about anything.

When you try to put and view AVI, MKV, VOB files on Galaxy Tab, you may find that all your efforts appeared unavailing. This is because Galaxy Tab does not support the video or audio codecs used by AVI, MKV or VOB. To get the work done, one effective method is to convert VOB/MKV/AVI to Galaxy Tab most compatible video format like MP4.

For you to be able to run 720p videos in the best possible way you will need to overclock the tab to 1.4Ghz using the OC Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138167 and then use the S/W Fast acceleration option of MXPlayer. I run them that way and they are as smooth as they get without encoding
I don't see anything wrong with the stock movie player.

The stock movie player won't play 720p mkv files without encoding them and converting them to mp4 or a supported format first.

I'm am 100% surprised that dice player isn't playing your files. I watch Naruto, Bleach, and I've watched a full 1080p mkv with Dice player and it played everything SUPER smooth.
Which version of dice do you have? There is an optimized version for tegra. If you are using an older build it won't work. You also need the tegra2 plugin.

No. It should be active automatically. I know it plays mkvs perfectly. I just watched this weeks naruto on it without any stutter.

What are you using to transfer? USB or Wifi or Bluetooth?
You have to split your movies into less than 4gb parts in order to watch them.
Unless you transfer over WiFi then it can be larger.

Holy hijack thread, Batman!
So basically the only way to watch 720p mkv files smoothly is through latest dice player?
I´m transcode every 720p movie with handbreak (Samsung 10.1 setup) and now everything runs smooth. And i transfer with USB.

Anyone successfully playing MKV files?

I've been trying to play MKV files off of my gtab with flashback 10.1.
I can get it to play with OnlinePlayer but it is too laggy to watch enjoyably, and I tried Mobo Video which doesn't seem to work for me after installing like 3 add ons they recommended...
Anyone else have any luck? I really want to use this as a video player device but I can't get files to work.
I'm on flashback 10 (since all 10.1 seems to do is update / replace / remove various apps) and I've been using MX Video Player to play my MKV files. works perfectly. I was specifically looking for a player that handles softsubs on MKVs and this player does that far better than I expected. So many extra little features works fine for me with 720P files. haven't tried any 1080P ones though.

I have found, at least with my media collection, that Diceplayer works better across all types of codec configurations.
I normally use BsPlayer, since it has built in samba client and therefore no need to use ex file explorer to start dice player. If BsPlayer does not cut it, then I switch to Diceplayer.
Mx video player does not currently decode all formats i hardware on the prime, so wait a little while with that.
I am finding the default video player after the ICS update to be quite capable. Haven't had to download any codecs, or anything.

Yes, I also have been impressed by the built in player but it has had problems with playing audio on many of my files.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
I don't believe there are any of yet. I currently use Dice Player which has played 99% of my videos on HW. For the other 1%, MX Player seems to have the fastest SW decoder. I know Dice has a Tegra 2 plugin (tried it on my Prime to no avail). I wouldn't be surprised if we see Tegra 3 optimized decoding before long. I can't imagine it would be too difficult to do, but since Tegra 3 is so new, there just haven't been any attempts yet.

I agree. The video playback is much better but do not have sound on many MKV 720p high profile. DICE Player is the best for me so far with BS Player second.

I find that the default ICS player is bugged out. Instead of a menu for play, pause and stuff it just shows colored squares (looks like my screen is melting form the inside out) and is obviously bugged out, it doesn't play half the stuff dice player does.
mx player has been treating me the best since I can select hardware or software for the video and the audio separately, allowing me to play 1080p videos and for those that the audio isn't working I can select software decoding of audio. Also MX player is so far the only player that has been handling multiple audio tracks and multiple subtitle tracks well.
@all
OK, sorry, I stand corrected. Just tried out an .mkv on the built-in player which gave no sound at all! Ugghh...

I thought there wouldn't be a problem playing any video with this device. Disappointed it's such a pain in the ass.

There are a few encoding settings with make problems (like 10bit) but overall i didn't found many h.264 mkv videos which are not playing.

What is best video player for CM7?

what video support is there with the latest version (3.5 alpha)?
What video player app should I install or should I use stock video app?
What video codecs/wrappers are supported? I have tried playing h264 mp4, mkv, and normal xvid (not 720p), and none of them worked.
Dice player, it's the best video player of Android, but on TP it works very randomly

The irony is that all the movies that these struggle with play beautifully on WebOS with Kalemsoft Media Player. Will they ever be able to port this over to Android?
For now, I guess i can reboot to webOS to watch a movie, but it is a pain since WebOS takes forever to boot up.
Ok, I finally found one player that plays most files pretty well. It is VLC player beta:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517415
The trick is to change the aspect ratio to "Center" so that it doesn't have to resize. Works great with 720p but will make anything less like 480 smaller.
Otherwise, you will get pixelation.
Still don't understand how you guys get MX player to work great. I get video stutter like crazy with high profile 720p videos.
I dont get why you are having so many issues.
I just downloaded mx player, nothing else and it plays my 1080 and 720 mkvs flawlessly..

Video encoding for playback on note?

I am coming from a Tegra 2 device (my atrix). When encoding videos for the Atrix, even though it can support 720p content, many videos converted via handbrake and ripbot wouldn't work with it unless base h264 profile was used. What video encoding settings can be used on the note? What all can it play? I love the device, just still learning about the differences technically from it and my old moto.

The Note can play alot. I don't have a list but this is what I know of the top of my head.
Divx
XVID
Divx Hd
MKV files
Mp4 (with h264)
I havent tried any WMV yet but I doubt it would work. Really this thing will play just about anything out there that you might download, provided they have an avi, Mp4 or Mkv extension.
As for Handshake settings, really anything under 1080p video and 2 channel audio should play fine.
I hope that helps a little.

Using MX Video Player, I can play just about anything in Hardware mode. Seems like the only thing I couldn't get to work (and I wasn't surprised) was 10bit encoded Anime.
I should note that MX Video Player + Galaxy Note is amazing. Now I just need a sweet case to come out (that I like) with a kickstand.
