What is the verdict on the 2.3.4 upgrade?
I am seeing people having problems. My phone is important to my business, so cannot risk bricking it.
I am not rooted or unlocked, so pretty much stock.
Suggestions?

I was rooted and on 2.2 froyo. For a while. Then switched over to gingerblur, and then saw that gingerbread ota was hitting so I flashed back to stock 1.8.3 and did the ota update. Point? You'll be fine, especially if yer stock now. Oh and also, the preinstall method discussed in dev thread DOES work well with 2.3.4

If your phone is stock, i.e. no mods at all, you will be fine. The OTA is designed to upgrade only on a stock phone running 4.1.83.
Upgraded three Atrix phones to 2.3.4, went fine on all three.
On my phone, it did mess up the icons on my home screens.

Just purchased my 1st Android phone and am getting used to everything. Without sounding like a broken record and having spent some time on the forum, can I please be directed to or have answered how to root an Atrix 4.1.83 v2.2.2 without flashing back?
Does it make sense to wait for Gingerbread to come out or does it make sense to unlock the boot now?
Any input greatly appreciated.

Look for Gingerbreak in dev section to root.
I would unlock and flash Kenneth Penn's 4.5.91. The Moto release in SOAK will stop you flashing back if you want to.
Beamed from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium
If you wait and get an update from Motorola and you have your artix rooted on 2.2. How should one proceed? Does one just update and then re-root after that?
Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if I HAD to flash back in order to gain root. As much as I don't like the motoblur bloat, a few items are handy. Any ROMs to look at?

When I was running 1.83, I used a method from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
Check out the third post in that thread. You'll need ADB to get it done, but if you don't have ADB installed you may as well do that.
ROM-wise, I'm using CherryBlur, which is a modified version of the latest 2.3.4 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160649
And I think it's great. The original HKTW 2.3.4 beta leak had a lot of bugs, many of which have been corrected by community updates and hacks, but Kenneth's 2.3.4 seems to be pretty clean so far. As to whether it's worth waiting for the official release, well... I think it's worth modding your phone just for kicks, and to gain a better understanding of how it works.
Thanks Obscene! Now all I have to do is find the time. In theory; to get bothyour methods done - how long should I expect barring no issues?

Hi there, i'm no expert in this, but i should imagine that if you made a nandroid backup of your stock rom before installing CM7, you should be ok to just restore that.
I have already installed cm7 buddy nd stupidly I didn't make a backup I understand that I can't completely restore it bck as bl will always be unlocked I just need the stock T-Mobile UK 2.2.2 rom

I can't be 100% sure about this, but seeing as you haven't installed an official 2.3.4 GB, you might be ok to flash the official stock 2.2 froyo t-mobile firmware. Head over to the super firmware thread and have a look there. As i've already said, I can't be 100% sure about this, hopefully someone with a lot more experience than me will chip in and give you the assurance you after, sorry i can't help you anymore my friend.

No problem my friend, if our official 2.3.4 GB update isn't here by next week i'm going down the same route as yourself, unlocking my BL and installing either CM7 or Alien. It seems that us in the UK get left behind when it comes to official software updates! !

I think the brick problem is when you flash a gingerbread sbf and try flashing a froyo sbf...but I've done the same as you. Except I backed up my original stock rom.

You can regain root, but no luck going back to 2.3.4. Use Photon Torpedo to reroot, but DO NOT flash any roms that are not built for 2.3.5. unless you are ready to do work on your phone for the next few days, weeks, months, etc.
I know from experience! lol

I got my replacement Thudnerbolt last week cause im still in warenty with verizon.
The other one was dropping signal or hardly ever connecting to 4g in the middle of a full 4g bar area. Screen unresponsive at times and when i make calls half the time i have to hang up and redial cause the other party cant hear me like if im on mute. .
Pretty much the same story with the old thunderbolt and i know its not physical damage cause ive kept my phones in otter boxes since day one and never dropped them.
So i flashed a near stock buil of a rom but its a little older i think and have played with various roms and settings ect trying to correct it andd its defenatly the phone. As usual. Im about to call into verizon again but to be sure im hoping someone can tell me the current build software version ect info from the about phone section under settings incase they ask. I have that deodexed rooted 400mb(ish) standard rom from somewhere on it now so its as close to normal as i want it at the moment..
But if someone can help me out id appreciate it i dont want to have to unroot and use the htc AIO tool to put it completly to stock (yet)
And no im not tryin to get a rezound or whatever i happend to love my thunderbolt and the big screen I just want this one fixed or a halfway decent one that works as it should.
Thanks for your time!

I cannot figure how to update to this version of Android. I would eventually like to have root access, but am still at the part where it won't update from 2.2.1 to 2.3.4. I guess I need some advice with how to go about updating to be on GB.

2.2.x is Froyo
2.3.x is Gingerbread
Froyo was the Thunderbolt's launch OS.

If there is no update available, you're on the most recent software update.

Good morning all,
My wife's USCC Electrify (Photon otherwise) is a large, silvery turd for some reason. I've found the rooting instructions but I'm wondering/hoping that someone has the clever info on whether this beast can go Jelly Bean (or even ICS). It's currently on Gingerbread and it behaves like a naughty child.
However, perhaps rooting will cure it's ills?
I dunno.
I'd prefer the upgrade method.
Any push in the right direction would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
JBH

What version of gingerbread 2.3.4 or 2.3.5? Some people have still been able to unlock their phone/bootloader on 2.3.5, but only on electrify. Normally 2.3.5 is locked and you can't advance. If you can unlock the boot loader then you can most likely use any of the ROMS.
Just know that 10.1 CM ROM is 4.2 jelly bean. There are issues with it still like Bluetooth, wifi tethering. Amongst other little things.
Any of the straight CM 10 ROMS work quite well.

She's 2.3.5. I found the root instructions here:
teamuscellular.com/Forum/topic/1759-how-to-root-motorola-electrify-235-for-dummies-guide/
So...after that I can update to 10.1/Jelly Bean? If it's not a hassle, can you please link me to those ROMs?
Thanks,

If the phone was updated to 2.3.5 this will brick your phone, if it was bought with 2.3.5 then it'll work. Just follow instructions of the rom
