Need 5 minutes from a Froyo user. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Our good friends at Motorola thought the GB update was SO good... that they decided to screw one thing up just for the lulz. Playing movies now on Entertainment Center utilizes a 4:3 format, which makes no sense, and use only half the screen space on your lapdock or monitor.
So please, could someone at froyo give us their entertainment center? To do that, go to /system/apps and upload us their MediaCenter.apk
Thats (probably) all we need to put it back on track. Thank you.

Hey man, I have a CWM backup of my Froyo system. If you can tell me how to extract the MediaCenter.apk from this backup I can upload it for you.

im still on froyo 1.8.3 & i love using my lapdock. been planning to update to gingerbread. so is the lapdock experience better in GB compared to froyo. is the firefox 4 better than firefox 3.6.16
on froyo? as for the 4:3 ratio, maybe its just in the settings? pls advise. tnx

Finally part 2 !!

ok folks all im going to say is check out the image attached
and no its not a joke i do actualyl have this running on my streak. stock android 2.2 froyo - using dells eclair kernel source, as you can see its not usable (no wifi/bt/phone etc which we expected). working on gettign at least 3g going now.
great to see evidence this thing is moving if we wait on dell it wont happen for ages
but is 2.2 froyo based on the same kernnell as 2.1?
not really but dells kernel is a mash up or alot of differnet kernels including froyos

its a different kernel. there is 2.1 eclair and the new froyo 2.2. Dell made their own 2.1 Eclair development platform and drivers and some additions to the kernel to support the hardware. Most other company's use the android Eclipse developer platform.
some great enhancements in the 2.2 kernel is the support for the flash-light (the leds on the back, not this not-wanted screen lighters) , a speedboost of nearly 10% in some cases and a new support library for social networking.
some info on new stuff added http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html
edit: did i allmost forget the flash 10.1 support.
more edit: 2.1 official seems to come out in a few weeks up till december. 2.2 scheduled for februari
yup add a boot time of about 10 seconds too and its is SILLY fast running, smooth as silk
awesome!
Now what can we do to help? also is it just you work on this or others pitching in?
and if you don't mind, can you write up a guide or is it similar to the other devices of how to build AOSP?
I'm trying to learn but dont have much programming and dev background so its like starting from scratch!

Great work. Can't wait until a full release available. All of the efforts are appreciated.
just droped linpack onto this built, scored 34
How about framerate limit removal? I saw a video where removing it would dramatically improve input response time.

repeating the same message over and over isnt going to help. its NOT a simple thing to sort out framerate and since ive still yet to find any info on how they managed it on the evo (tech info not simple videos) i dont even know where to start

Indeed, there are bigger things to worry about, like all the sensors, drivers, etc. I personally find the framerate quite acceptable at 30fps, only thing it really hurts is benchmarks... is the actual screen designed to refresh at 60Hz anyways? I can run GlxGears at 1000fps, in that regard my computer is uncapped, its obviously impossible for me to view it that way... another mention of this will get someone reported.

For anyone who doesn't want to spend 10 minutes searching.
There's a good reason that forcing novice users to search for 10minutes is a good thing and posting direct links isn't
The 2.2 isn't ready for mass consumption yet;
and if a whole load of people install it who don't really know what they're doing, then everyone involved is going to spend less time getting 2.2 working and more time getting those novices streaks back to working order.

[Q] Awesome setups and must have apps?

I've had my gtab now for over a month and I just installed my first ROM last week. I went with the Calkulin+Clemsyn V6 for the 1.2 BL. So far I have to say I love it but I don't know what it really excels at. Therefore, I thought maybe you guys could help a noob out and at the same time be able to do a bit of bragging about how bad a$$ your tablet is. What I would like to know is:
1. Share with the community about your bad a$$ setup. What do you have? What can it do? What makes it so bad a$$? And what are its cons?
2. What are some of the must have apps? What makes them a must have?
3. Can someone tell me what my ROM really excels at doing? Every ROM is especially good for something? What can mine do other than just being really fast and stable?
Just thought this would be fun for everyone to see what each of us have done with such a powerful blank slate and at the same time maybe get some ideas from each other on how to improve our own setups. Not to mention maybe a bit of bragging, which we all like to do, especially when you have an audience that can appreciate it. I try to brag to my gf about how bad a$$ the gtab is but since she knows nothing about tech toys, it is lost on her. So everyone whip out there metaphorical "you know what" and let's start measuring lol.
Well, speed and stability really is a universal need for you to do anything. I use mine for presentations, showing people autocad sketches, and reading and writing stuff at work. It really is a cheap and light weight way for me to achieve most of the things I'd normally do with a laptop.
My "girlfriend" just finished her graduate degree in something medical (trying to keep a level of anonymity here). She's a tech dummy, so I got her a transformer with a docking station for her to deal daily with her patients.
I use mine for research and school. I use adobe PDF to review lecture notes, I use Droidiris to search the web for pictures of medical $hit I have to learn (and just searching images too, searching "lazers" gave me an hour of solid lolz)
My gtab is badazz because I'm running the latest compile of cm7, I have used system app remover to cut all bloatware out of the os. This has resulted in an average 5% drain per hour in active use and a 2% per hour drain in stasis and a quadrant of 3450.
I'm running a red&black theme with a red glowing Keyboard, black&white background and black and white app icons. Its a simple mix of black, white, and red that to me is sassy as hell.
I use wiimote controller app to play snes and GBA games with a wiimote through Bluetooth. (Which blows people away when they see it)
I got Netflix, I got hulu and I got xda access, I am in love with this 2lb piece of plastic almost as much
as I am my wife. Luckily my wife has the specific ports needed to mount my other tab and transfer
data to internal SD.
Yes... we have a kid...
That's why that last part is funny.... not just because I said "mount" in a non technical refference but that I referenced her lady bits as internal SD and my genes as data.
Sounds pretty sweet

Your gtab sounds pretty sweet. The Netflix and Hulu are a couple of the things that I would like for mine to do. It may do those things now, but I haven't tried them yet. I like the customization with the colors that you did. It sounds like you have taken yours in a direction similar to where I would like to see mine at some point. I'm trying to learn which ROM does what, and what makes one better than another. Once I get that all figured out, I'll make my customization a bit more permanant. This is awesome. You guys keep posting your own bada$$ gtablet setups and customizations. I look forward to reading about them.

I use this as a guide,
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones
It tells you what's safe to remove and what's not from cyanogen mods. It also tells you the free way to remove apps using terminal. I personally use system app uninstaller, it was a buck and is a worthwhile investment. Sets up a slick UI for deleting both system apps and normal apps.
In most cases if you have a favorite browser(I use dolphin 5.1) you can delete stock. Same with keyboard(I use better keyboard 8), launcher(I use VTL), video player(I use FLV player), music player (I use power amp).
Other things like private virtual network or stock live wallpapers that most don't use can go in the bin as well.
Hope that helps
As far as customization goes cm7 has a good theming app stock and free themes in the market. Vegan 5.1 has some sweet themes made by GTO777 in the apps and themes thread.
When I was shopping for ROMs GoodIntentions suggested that I might like Calkulin/Clemsym 1.5 V6. He was right. I like it for what I've been able to do with it. I didn't want to start customizing my tab just willy nilly without knowing what my ROM's capability was. Maybe you guys could point me in the right direction if I tell you what I want to do. Then you could tell me if it's even possible to do it with this ROM. I would like to be able to run the dolphin browser but was unable to find it in the market. I would aso like to be able to watch Netflix, Hulu, and various formats of video (Xvid, Avi, Mp4, etc.). The swype keyboard found on my cell phone would also be awesome. I'd like to be able to connect to my cell via bluetooth so that I could put the pictures and video from it on my gtab. This blows my mind why this simply doesn't work out of the box. Finally I would like to tether to my cell via USB. The reason I want it USB is because my phone gets really hot when tethering with wifi, which will cause the phone to shut down. Not to mention it can't be good for it. Please help me out guys and keep posting your setups too. Mantara has some great ideas he used in making his tab personal and it gets me thinking of stuff to do to mine.
Have you used barnacle to tether? Using barnacle to tether through wifi on my OG mytouch 3G never overheated and battery drain was reasonable. It was the only one that worked for extended periods of time.
Netflix only works on cm7 with some slight modifications and vegan 5.1 with a patch that breaks YouTube to get Netflix.
Hulu is available by using a modified flash apk. You can find the most recent modified apk on this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077914
you just need to turn flash to always on and user agent to desktop in your browser.
Here is dolphin 4.6, not the newest but its stable and plays well with hulu. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7828279/Dolphin Browser HD_4.6.1.apk
I heard there is a swype designed for tablets. Haven't used it yet but I know there is a thread in apps and themes all about getting swype to work.
That's all I can think of now, I wil edit if I think of anything more
Using Easytether

I've been able to tether my laptop to my phone using Easytether. It works really well eventhough it's a free version. The thing is that requires software to be loaded on both the phone and the laptop. That software on the phone is for Windows so I haven't figured out how to make it work in the gTablet. Is Barnacle different in how it functions? Is there software for both the phone and the tablet? Explain how it works if you don't mind. I would love to figure this out.
As a side note, I would love to see a picture of your tablet homepage and keyboard. Could you get a screen shot? I gotta check it out.

There's some quick shots. Color Is odd because the crap free screen shot app is crap and couldn't get shots of red browser theme or the red and black Google Widgets and powerstrip because said crappy app only allows 3 free screen shots. But you can get the point from the pics I did get.
I see, your phone is win mob, barnacle is for android phones. No software on recipient end, only on parent phone. Works good though, I used to play Xbox 360 online through my barnacle adhoc

Man, I went back and reread my previous post. I made no sense. I have a Samsung Galaxy Indulge a la MetroPCS. So it is an Android phone. The problem is the software that I suppose I would need to load on the tablet to tether it to the phone. I had to do it to the laptop so it would connect to the phone, so it only make ssense that I should have to do it to the tablet as well. I have Easytether on my phone, no problem. What about software for the tablet? The laptop software is for windows so I can't load it on the tablet, and the software on the phone isn't what I need for the tablet even though they are both android. Seems really confusing, but it's really quite simple. Maybe it would be easier if you told me how you were able to make this connection using a barnacle USB connection. No wifi. Make sense lol?
Nice looking tablet by the way. I looked for some themes or skins for mine but I'm using VTL launcher and everything in the market says it's for ADW launcher. My name must have been Murphy ina previous life lol. Thanks for your help and input.
Most adw themes work in vtl. Vtl is built around adw source.
Barnicle makes a wifi connection available for your gtab to use. It links to your phones wifi and passes on its 3g signal. Only need to have barnacle on the phone. I have never actually "physically" tethered an android so I can't offer any advice on that.
I'm kinda screwed there I guess. I haven't rooted my phone yet, so it won't act like a wifi hot spot. Power control plus will do it but no one can break the wp2 encryption. Therefore I'm limited to the usb tether but those that have rooted their phones report extreme heat coming from it while in wifi tether mode. Not sure what to do about an internet connection since there appears to be no usb software at this moment. Thanks for the help though.
Are there no more cool gtabs out there that you guys would like to share. I can't believe that you guys aren't more proud of your work and that you aren't will ing to share your efforts with the Android community.
I replaced the viewsonic 3 birds logo with a united federation of planets in star trek logo. And for the boot animation, I made my own star trek computer console look-alike animation that says establishing link to main federation database.

I've read through that thread and it only focuses on themes and home page screen shots. I want to know what people have been able to make their tablets do as well as seeing some of the visual stuf they've come up with. An example of what I'm talking about is some have synced their SMS with google voice and are able to use their tables to text. Some are making phone calls, using skype, watching hulu and netflix, and some have even turned their tabs into mobile nostalgia gaming devices. There are tutorials on how to do some of this stuff, but not all of it. I am interested in meeting these people and seeing how well these operations function, and how they did it. The other thread doesn't share this information and rreally doesn't go beyond the visual aspect of the homescreen. I hav noticed one thing for sure in these forum and that is that people love to brag about what they can do with thier tablets. I was merely offering them an opportunity to do so. What can yours do?

[Q] Deciding on a ROM

I ordered a gtablet from woot and it should be here next week. In the mean time, I am trying to decide what ROM I should choose. I can't decide if I should use a Gingerbread ROM or a Honeycomb ROM. (Most likely I will use a Honeycomb ROM.)
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Alex

Try some and see. Here's my experience
Froyo Roms - never used them. Main claim to fame is support for HD video playback. Since display is no better than 720p, and storing huge HD material that only is marginally visually better than a good divx encode that takes 1/4 of the space isn't worth it for me, I passed on Froyo.
CM7 based gingerbread roms - lots of them. Will make the gTab the best big ass phone without a cell radio. I ran VeganTab Ginger Edition since getting my gTab a couple months ago. Right up until
[ROM][BL1.1][BL1.2] GtabComb beta 3.1 came out. Honeycomb goodnesss. Tablet actually feels like a tablet, not a big ass phone. I'm on this.
BE SURE you understand the whole "1.1" vs "1.2" bootloader issue before you flash any rom. Then decide what you want to try first. The flash away and play with stuff - maybe try a few different ones - and pick which one you want.
It's pretty easy to switch between them all.
Hmm... I'm gonna look into GtabComb. I'm look for the best overall Honeycomb ROM.
Woot still hasn't shipped out my tablet. I ordered it on 7/13/11. Also I was wondering, what ROM has the best camera support for Skype, ooVoo, etc?

Oh, camera is broken (to varying degrees) in all roms other than Froyo roms.
Its such a crappy camera I just think of it as "doesn't have a camera" anyway. If you want the camera to work, you're stuck with Froyo roms.
Oh really? Damn, it's that bad?

Yeah. It is. VGA. Like from the mid 2000s.
This thing is an interesting mish mash of quality and garbage. The parts you see (LCD, camera) are garbage. They saved about $15 on the build costs by cutting those corners. Winning!
i use tango for my video calls.
and it's definitely not the best, but it looks fine when I video chat with my wife on her iphone 4 when she's away or when I'm out of town.
so in all honesty, the camera function to be able to video chat with my wife is why I haven't jumped to the honeycomb roms yet...
I don't really mind no flash, I just want the camera to work.
Im back to Froyo after trying all of them including Gingerbread and Honeycomb simply because GB and HC degrade much faster than Froyo, and Froyo feels snappier and way more stable. Not to mention that HC is crippled in video acceleration amongst other things.
This is the Froyo version I'm currently using: Clemsin_Caulkinver5
IMO you should decide what you want to do with the tablet, and then see what ROMs fit your needs, and then pick one.
I like G-harmony Gingerbread. But as in an earlier post. Kind of keeps you as a big phone.
I have tried several ROM's after quickly switching from the stock ROM. I am on Gtabcomb 3.2 and love it. Battery live was an issue but I believe it was due the setting on my live wallpaper. Took it off the charger at 5:00 this morning and still at >75% battery.
I think that i'm gonna take a shot at gtabcomb, it sounds good. If not then i'll look into Vegan-Tab. My gtablet is coming in tomorrow, i'll keep y'all posted.
So gtab comb was a complete fail. I am running illuminate. I'm having issues watching Youtube videos. Videos do not load on the Youtube app.
man that sucks...in the same boat as you...was going to try the first one, but now I'm thinking of the illuminate...let me know how you like it.

I was using Vegan Gingerbread for months, I'm using Honeycomb for 2 days and i have so many problems with freezing, camera not working, so much problem, going back to Gingerbread, and personally recommend that you flash with Gingerbread, you will love it.
You have to look at what you are using the tablet for. Watching videos youtube etc. Then stick with vegan-tab ginger edition . The 2.3 roms are more polished at this point , but honeycomb is quickly coming around. It is very easy to flash and try different roms.

That's all you like, Battery life? you don't mind that freezes, Camera not working, videos stop playing. Tab side bars not operating.
I am in the same boat as many of you. Went with GTabcomb and really worked well. I loved being able to take screenshots of apps I was writing about. Then, out of the blue, it would not recognize the internal SD card. So I think I need to head back to Vegan Ginger and wait until the HC roms become a little more stable.

New atrix, is it gingerbread or what?

so is the atrix gingerbread or just the standard android, 2.3.4? can you add themes without a whole new rom? I just readlly dont see a point in a whole new rom right now, when its not gonna give me really anything new, that i dont have right now.
Thanks
Android 2.3.x is Gingerbread. So, yes.
You need to be deodexed before you can theme !!!!
sent from my Atrix via XDA premium
A new rom gives you better battery, better camera, faster phone and many more goodies. Pick neutrino or help testing the cm9 photon builds.
ahhh.
so first, do deoxed, i would have to flash a new rom for that, so then i could theme. My camera is 1080p but at 5mp it cant really get any "better" than that. can it?
But i guess i can flash a few and atleast try them out and see. So far.
with moderate texting, Playing a few games during the day at work for Mobile Data, and WIFI are both off most of the day, except to check email xda, etc on breaks, make a couple calls a day , give or take. my batter seems to last all day until i go to bed. sometimes close to empty but rearely. But atleast I have a baseline for the battery.
So after flashing a new rom , is it a good idea to recalibrate the battery? EACH time i flash a new rom? so if i am testing a bunch out each week.. wow that is gonna suck lol.
Thanks guys,

Need help finding a stable ROM for basics..

I rooted and installed Vegan-Tab Ginger 7.1 well over a year ago and then my g tablet pretty much collected dust. My son is asking for a tablet for 4 basics things: to watch You Tube, Access Net, Play Android Games, watch Netflix. Right now the video lags or is just a black screen when trying to watch through the You Tube app and when we go through a browser, it tells us we need updated flash player. I'm so far removed from when I started with the tablet that I have no idea where to begin.
I don't know what other information you need to offer any suggestions.... When I originally rooted, I was on version 1.1 -3588 (that doesn't even make sense to me anymore!)
And, you can recommend something to meet my needs, what steps to I take to get it on the tablet? I'm happy to follow links -- I just don't know where to begin. (Do I wipe it clean? How? Do I partition it? How? Then add new ROM? How? LOL)
I have to believe I can salvage this tablet for his needs rather than buying a new, cheap tablet for him.
Thank you .... thank you!!!
I am still on this one from Roebeet, Brilliant Corners
Everything works, camera and all. I use it to watch netflix, SlingBox Mobile, YouTube, it all works.

Thank you! So both of those ROMS would work with version 1.1?
I really appreciate the help!
You may have to follow the directions to move over to 1.2 I held off for the longest time but am glad I did it now. A lot of the compatible ROM's look really good and the dev's have done an awesome job keeping everything updated but I want all of the hardware to work on my GTab. It is kind of why I haven't strayed from Brilliant Corners.

Thanks -- I found a thread yesterday to walk me through upgrading to 1.2. Gonna save that for another weekend but feeling like there is a light at the end of the tunnel
I tried 2 versions of Jelly Bean last week and now back to vegan tab gingerbread. I found both versions of JB to be slow, afterall they are still beta versions. Went back to vegan tab and it runs great, even seams to run better this time. Everything works including youtube, had problems before because I updated youtube. Leave the version that comes with vegan. Just my opinion.

I have gtab brilliantcorners 1.3.0 saved on my Google drive. It is 149MB and I guess MegaUpload was shut down. PM me if you want access to the file.
I tried SmOother_Bean.ver.1.5.2 which is a version of Jelly Bean. It's running pretty good, youtube and other video sites run great. I don't play games so cant answer to that.
Back to Vegan tab gingerbread, tired of sod's and lately restarts for no apparent reason.
