Hi Guys,
So, I've been Googling and forum-browsing for about two weeks now trying to find a solution to my problem but haven't been able to find, specifically, what I wanted so I thought I'd try my luck here to see if anyone else has experienced this:
For about a month, give or take, my SGS2 no longer uses 'mobile' versions of websites and I can't work out why (as in, what's changed) – because it used to before.
In case there's any confusion, what I mean is when I go to www[dot]google[dot]com for example, it loads the normal google homepage, not the smaller, optimised mobile google home page. This applies to Facebook, Wikipedia and a bunch of other, unrelated, websites that I browse on my phone that no longer auto-detect my phone and switch me to the mobile site. Which is what I want it to do (switch me to the mobile version of the site, that is).
Anyone else experiencing this and know of a solution?
My SGS2 is unlocked/unbadged, and I am running a custom ROM (Litening 2.2) although I was on 2.2, and previous versions of Litening, without this happening - so I don't think it's the ROM (plus I've searched it's thread).
I've also tried other, non-stock browsers (such as opera and FF) and they have the same issue. I've also tried clearing caches.
I've checked just about every damn setting on the phone that I can find, and Ive even removed almost every non-stock app but nothing seems to fix the issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
they probably forced the useragent of the internet app.
try to tape : about:useragent in the adress bar.
for opera and FF , if i remember, you can manage this in the settings.
Ok it was set to Custom and the code was:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_5_7; en-us)
AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko)
Version/4.0
Safari/530.17
No idea what that is or what it means, but it seams odd to have so many references to Mac. Anyways I changed it to 'Galaxy S' and now it's working again! Thank you so much!
if i remember, there is a thread in the "theme and apps" section, about managing the useragent to be sure it won't revert to the "default" useragent(the mac one in your custom rom case ^^ ) after closing the app or rebooting the phone .
just in case it reverts again to the Mac one after a reboot
[edit] my bad it was in the android original dev section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126826&highlight=browser
that's probably how he modifies it, so it will revert to the mac one after a boot :/ (modified framework-res.apk, so you will need to learn to use apk manager if you want a "stock" behaviour).
Or just never reboot! (jokes )
Thanks for your diligence mate, very much appreciated

Hi all,
Just bought an Android tablet off evilbay.
Item number: 250907151743
Anything anyone can tell me about it would be welcome.
Namely what model is it & what hacks mods and upgrades I can do to it.
Right, the first problem.
I've transferred my home webpage to it but the standard windows path doesn't work, so what path do I use to call a webpage on the sdcard from within html?
Cheers.
It's better if you just post the link to it. About the homepage, why not just go to it on your device then save it as a bookmark?
I tend to just post the item number from habit 'cos quite a few forums I go on don't like links.
I'd rather have my normal homepage rather than a list of 30 bookmarks.
Of course, if I could just install Windows on it, life would be easier

You could also set as your homepage. How do you expect to install Windows on it?
That's what the 'if' was for
Tried Android several times, don't like it yet.
But at least if I don't get on with it, it'll sell easy enough - since Android is trendy
Personally I still prefer Dos and CP/M.
Hey.
I'm getting confused reading all the threads about what is and what isn't supported on this device so far. Plus, 'Knox' is a concept I don't get.
Background: Coming from a long line of rooted/CM supported devices (last one: OnePlus One, used by my wife now). This .. is an entirely different beast, starting from Odin or whatever that abomination is called to TW, Knox et al.
The hardware is amazing. The software is quite unbearable after spending an hour trying to remove bloat- and crapware or traversing pastel colored menus desperately looking for options that are trivial to find in stock images. So my ideal solution, if the pastel-touchwiz fairy would grant me a wish, would be to have a working CM. Which isn't an option of course.
- Can I root this device, preferably without running a big automation package on a Windows machine (the only thing I found so far was CF-AutoRoot - not sure what that is and if I want that)
- Can I remove more or less all TW traces?
- Are there unbranded EU (or in my case: DE) firmwares around, that at least remove all the Vodafone .. stuff I have to bear with? Only found links to US/CA stock firmwares so far
I'm a long time Android user, believing in the Year Of The Linux Desktop for longer than Duke Nukem Forever was delayed, but clueless about Samsung devices and the whole infrastructure here. Any pointers, any resources would be greatly appreciated.
To document my issues so far:
- Both the Stock Firmware thread and sammobile don't seem to help - at least it isn't obvious if there is any compatible _unbranded_ ROM out there. sammobile explicitly offers a German (do I even care?) firmware release per carrier and I'm certain they all suck in similar ways. Do I need a German one? Are there well known sensible ones? I'm running en_US anyway, I don't even care about the language of the device.
- Looking at Odin right now, but I don't have a Windows machine except for my work laptop. Bah. :/ Heimdall seems a reverse engineered replacement?
- sammobile says "You should really look into Kies for firmware updates", but their link is confusing and mentions random Google Play apps. Going to the Samsung site and downloading Kies on my work laptop (not a good idea) I am greeted by gazillion "You should really download Smart Switch" popups. When I give in, the link opens Internet Explorer (?? Certainly not my default browser!) and redirects me to a German site. My OS is en_US. My browser - even IE - asks for en_US. Samsung doesn't care. I fail to find 'Smart Switch' as a concept that even applies to a desktop/laptop machine. All I can find is again stuff about a Google Play app and .. migration from iTunes or something. No installer. Can't find a download link.
So: Odin is for Windows only. Kies is complaining that the device isn't supported. The replacement cannot be found. Erm.. What? I'm sure you people have done this dance before. Help, please? Currently the device is a shiny, fully-charged brick without any apps/data/etc. on my desk, waiting for me to discover ways to make it work.
Hello and good morning to all,
I'd like to ask a maybe quite detailed question:
Does anybody know a way to change the user agent which is put out by the Dalvik VM?
The idea is to mask the Android handset to look like something else...;
My handset connetcs via WiFi using a permanently changed MAC address ('borrowed' from my ages-old Commodore Amiga Ethernet Card) to look like a Commodore International Device and displays a host name "HAL 9000" (instead normal android-43289.....).
Fennec's user agent is also altered; but apps requesting information from the net seem to use the Dalvik VM, so I'd like to change the user-agent of the Dalvik VM as well...
Above explanation given, I'd like to change lines like the ones below:
Dalvik/1.4.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.6; GT-S5830i Build/GINGERBREAD)
Dalvik/1.6.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.4.2; GT-I9301 I Build/KOT49H)
I am quite sure that a different user-agent string for the Dalvik VM would not do much difference (if any) to the sending/requesting app, or would it?
Any ideas and/or help would be greatly appreciated!
Greetz, Frizz
I just found this post as I recently became frustrated with not having an infallible means to change the user-agent of my phone.
Although i change my user-agent frequently in Windows and Linux, I never investigated the means to change it on my Android.
Your post above however seems to imply that, at least with browsers, any user-agent string you might be able to change, would be overridden by the identification of the device from the MAC of the wireless NIC (which is how I typically access the internet). Unfortunately, even though I'm rooted, there does not seem to be a way to spoof the MAC address on my HTC One m8 (our at least no one had figured out how to do this).
Regarding apps, although I never thought about it, I could see the Dalvik VM being responsible for identifying the user agent.
Either way, I'm going to research this further and take a stab at writing an app that changes the MAC on my phone and will see how you could change the Dalvik user-agent, because I do think that there should be some way of changing the user-agent universally for your phone.
Anyway...I'll post here after I've done some research.
I got Remix working, used the wonderful hacked version. I am on a Dell something-plex and it is working great! I got my screen orientation to move to portrait, and I am excited to setup widgets on a third party launcher. I am going to make it a family calendar-screen in our kitchen. Thinking about making an instructable out of the project. I found a lot of answers to questions and road blocks I encountered from the forums. There is one thing I cannot solve.
I cannot install any google task client that works! When I say works, they will all install, and most of them will let you make tasks locally, but none of them will sync with google. I CAN use a browser, (chrome, dolphin, etc) and get to the canvas or android mobile interface of tasks, but none of the apps can sync. I am stumped. The same apps I have tried work fine on my phone or tablet, but will not seem to work on remix. Is it x86 related? is it something funky with remix specifically?
I do linux admin for my job, so i dug around looking at dmesg and whatnot, but i have not taken the time to learn android at the same level as a server OS per se. I was not able to find anything thus far. Was thinking about logcat and taking the android approach to troubleshooting this rather than an OS administrator approach.
Has anybody seen this behavior? Has anybody found a way around it? My reasoning for using the app is mostly silly. I would like to use a widget rather than have a floating browser window open. Call it silly, but its so we can see our family pictures behind it easier. (I also got wallpaper changer to cycle through a bunch of family photos i copied on to it)
If anybody over at Remix wants to have me send logs and stuff, I can do that if they would like.
Hi,
I've just taken a 101-G8 out of its box after about 10 years. I was pleased to find it was still in working conditions, was able to connect it to the wifi, use the installed apps, but trouble started when I tried to browse (using the pre-installed Dolphin browser). Almost all sites give me the 'Web page not available' message. After some trials I found that accessing http version instead of https would work, if the site didn't force a redirect. So I suspect a certificate issue, but I have no clue how to update them. Then I found out that the AppsLib and Market apps are no longer supported, so I can't update or install new apps.
After reading the forums, I know I could try to upgrade Android to something like 4.0 (via Cyanogen), but I'm not even sure this would fix my browsing issues, which is all I need right now (I'd like to use it for my kids to access the doodlelearning.com website). Any advice for me?
Thanks!
