[Q] Galaxy S 2 i9100M rooting questions - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up a SGSII from Bell today. I was looking to put the VillainROM on it. From what I understand I need to of as follows:
Use CFRoot XXKG3 (even though my phone is XXKG2?)
Then flash the firmware?
I wanted to make sure.
Thanks!

They mention XXKG3 because they want you to use the latest version. But you should just take the XXKG2 one, because of its compatibility with your current stock rom.

Is it bad to use XXKG3, I rather have the latest?

[Q] Questions regarding stock kernel

Evening everyone,
First of all, yes, I am a noob and yes, I know there is a ton of information on this site. I've been reading basically non-stop for the past day and a half and though I've basically figured out everything I need to know (for now) I still have a few questions and need a bit of clarification. If this info is available elsewhere feel free to link and complain about me starting a new thread.
Just got my sII yesterday, info is:
Gingerbread 2.3.3
PDA: I9100MUGKG2
PHONE: I9100MUGKG2
CSC: I9100MBCKG2
Carrier: Virgin Mobile (Canada)
I'm planning on doing CF-Root -> VillainROM and I believe I understand all the steps for that. However, in an attempt to avoid completely voiding my warranty, I was hoping to find a stock kernel that I can flash in case of emergency. It seems as though there isn't one available for Virgin in North America yet, so what's the next best thing? Is KE7 compatible (I'm still a little confused as to whether I need to find a KG2 version or not)?.
One other question, can I root using CF-Root as my phone is now and use the XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1, or is it incompatible due to the fact that my phone is running KG2?
Thanks in advance.
I can't help you with your stock rom question, there's a thread in android dev that has all the stock roms.
To root, just flash the closest cf root kernel, the KG1 one should work ok. You are using one of the 2.3.3 kg2's and kg1 is 2.3.4. If you have any problems you could try the KF2 cf root kernel or one of the .3 kg2 kernels
Samsung are great at mixing around version numbers! We have about 3 diff kg2's!
Once you have flashed vr2.1 I would use the newest ninfetamine kernel (see my sig). It won't autoroot so you may need to use cf root to root.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't actually heard of the ninfetamine kernel until you mentioned. It there a significant difference between jusing that and just sticking with CF and VillainROM?

I find them a lot faster than cf root with villainrom, its easy to try it out and you can always flash back.
Ninphetamine doesn't auto root so use cf root to root then flash it.

Right, thanks for the correction. That is what I meant, just used the wrong term. Am I right in saying that there is no stock firmware available for Virgin in North America yet, or am I just mission something? I've been frequenting the firmware thread, edit: (linked wrong thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928&highlight=canada in hopes of finding it, but nothing for KG2 in North America yet.

[Q] Samsung SG2 Insecure Kernel

Hey guys,
I've just updated my Samsung via Kies and it is now running as follows:
Baseband - i9100xxke7
Kernel - i9100xwkg3
Build - Gingerbread xwkg3
This is the Vodafone NZ firmware.
Is there a insecure xwkg3 kernal around? Had a look around the forum, but wasn't able to find one.
Thanks in advance.
You can use the insecure KG1 kernel to root - but you might want to wait until intratech updates the carrier firmware thread with Voda's KG3 so you can flash the KG3 kernel again after rooting.
Anything interesting in there, by the by? I'm on leaked KG6.
EDIT: Looks like it's already uploaded, but Voda's KG3 is still 2.3.3. In that case, any 2.3.3 kernel will do, just flash the stock one back when you're done (Don't use the KG1 kernel, because that's 2.3.4).

If I flash back the Voda KG3 Kernel, will this still give me root access?

Ok, I'm having trouble finding a insecure kg3 kernel to use that is 2.3.3. Can someone please link me to the correct CF-Root v4.1 that I should be using.
Thanks heaps

Noob question... Looking at kies, it tells me:
PDA:KG3
Phone: KE7
CSC: KG1 (VNZ)
When one starts messing around with rooting etc. is it a case of one firmware for all, or can one actually change the Phone firmware, but not the PDA firmware?

[Q] Galaxy S II Firmware Upgrade 2.3.4 Help!

I have been researching the net on this and the posts in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
I haven't been able to post in there as I am a new user, but if someone can help me with this, it would be great.
I'm trying to upgrade my firmware to XXKH3 - Android 2.3.4.
My current version is:
PDA: I91000XWKE7
PHONE: I9100XXKE4
CSC: I9100OPSKE4
My Galaxy S II is rooted and it's on the OPTUS network in Australia.
My question is, how should I go about it?
Do I download the XXKH3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/C4DRUIJTLL and place that in PDA and PHONE in Odin?
And for CSC do I get this: Optus OPSKG1 CSC: http://www.multiupload.com/EPWZTIMS1F and place it in CSC?
I want to be able to use the OPTUS network on XXKH3, but without OPTUS bloatware. I'm just not sure which files to get so I can be with OPTUS on an Australian firmware if that makes any sense.
My last question is, would this then wipe my data? Or not?
I appreciate any help on this.

you are referring to the right thread. clear instructions are given on that thread.
choose the PDA option.
CSC has nothing to do with what languages the firmware supports and it will not add keyboard language support either.
You don't have to change the kernel or root or unroot to flash a new stock firmware.
You can then flash the kernel of your choice.
If you want the CF-root KH3 kernel. refer this thread
If you want to flash stock KH3 kernel you can also do that.
as far as operator bloatware is concerned search for operator specific bloatware removal scripts which can be executed using Gscript app . or a simpler option would be to freeze or uninstall the bloatware apps using Titanium back up Pro.
Thank you for the fast reply.
So pretty much all I need to do is put the XXKH3 Stock Kernel in the PDA option and that's it. So the OPTUS network will not be affected correct?
Then root it and I'm done?
Thanks again!

Alright will do. Thanks for all your help guys!
let me know how you get on,am severely tempted to flash new firmware just for a change!
Hm. I just put XXKH3 Stock Kernel in PDA and flashed it but my phone still says Android 2.3.3. I used the CF-root KH3 kernel as well to root it again.
What do I need to do to get it to Android 2.3.4? Do I have to place it in PHONE as well?
The ROM is 2.3.4, just about any ROM in original development is. What you are trying to flash is kernel. Best of luck.

Er, Kernel is kernel and firmware is firmware. Flashing the kernel won't update the firmware, just the kernel.
Alright I think I understand now.
Downloading the package, which should do it and I guess the stock kernel is used to root/rid yourself of the yellow triangle.

It went well, the phone is working great.
My data didn't get wiped.
Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Download the XXKH3 package.
I also used Titanium to backup my apps just in case and MyBackup Pro for contacts etc. but haven't needed to use it.
After you flash that (if you want to root the phone) go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and get CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4.zip. Put that in PDA and flash it.
To get rid of the yellow triangle, follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283369&postcount=2.
That's it. Thanks for all your help guys!
ok so lets say I chose new stock firmware to avoid the triangle, then later wanted to be official, could i plug my phone into kies and updatd to official 2.3.4 without problems?
i would like to try oranges firmware without rooting the device and voiding my warranty!

[Q] [CF-ROOT] Moving to 2.3.5

Hello everyone, currently i'm using the CF-ROOT KF3 kernel but it's 2.3.3 and i'm not getting any updates so i thought it would be better to update the kernel myself, but...
1) On the CF-ROOT page Chainfire said to choose the closest kernel version to the stock, is it just to keep the phone as close as possible to the original or it's a compatibility requirement?
2) As far as i know, CF-ROOT does not change the modem or csc. Are the improvements of the 2.3.5 mostly related to the kernel or to the modem and csc also?
3) Any special "flavor" of 2.3.5 recommended? I mean, there's a bunch of zips in that thread...
Phone info:
PDA: XWKF3
PHONE: XXKF1
CSC: JVKF1
Thanks
Just use the secure one if you don't need the ADB.
The one from my sig works best, IMO, because 4.2 uses SuperUser 3.0, which has some 'issues' as of yet unresolved.
I'd suggest you use XX_OXA_KI3: 2.3.5 4.1
Thanks! Is it better to flash the kernel via Odin or CMW?
Weird, i have used CMW, it rebooted but it's still 2.3.3
Edit: I've tried to install via CMW boot screen and it says Installation Aborted with XX_OXA_KI3

No you can use any kernel if upgrading .

2.3.5 is a firmware package new firmware new kernel new modem.
A kernel is part of the firmware .
3) Any special "flavor" of 2.3.5 recommended? I mean, there's a bunch of zips in that thread...
Pick the one with CSC that matches your location .

Yes but Chainfire states that it's only the Kernel, extracted from the original firmware package, so, is the sound improvement, better battery life, etc bound to the kernel only, or i need the whole package?
And i can't just pick a firmware because my region is still stuck in 2.3.3.

CF-ROOT compatible with my Galaxy S2 rom's?

My main question : Can I root my S2 Galaxy with CF-Root and the rom free (french operator) in 2.3.6 ?
PDA: I9100XWLA3
PHONE: I9100XXKI4
SCC: I9100FRELA1
1) In this case, should I take the corresponding version in KI4 Gingerbread ?
2) If yes, I saw "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-v4.1-CWM4.zip" but only in 4.1. There isn't the latest version 5.5 for KI4 ? (source: Official topically on XDA-Dev http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399)
3) There is other things to do after installing CF-ROOT with Odin ?
4) What does KI4 mean ? It's only reserved for firmware Free operator ?
Thanks.

XXKI4 is only the modem version.
For CF-Root the kernel version is important.
And that is in your case XWLA3.
So, CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OXA_LA4-v5.0-CWM5.zip will work fine for your phone.
P.S.: I recommend to update to XWLA4 (if you want to stay on GB).
This is the latest GB stock ROM version and was best balanced (performance and battery life) on my phone.
Have a look at my kernel test results => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26775950
Oh okay so i'm in XWLA3.
What, the LA4 will work fine for my LA3 ?
Have you a link for me to find XWLA4 ? Is it in 2.3.7 ? (I just waiting for ICS 4.0.4 because i saw to many people say that battery life and performance is too bad)
Nice your topic, very interesting !

You can get it from Intratech's official firmware thread in the Original Development section, but if you don't have any issues with your current firmware, why not just stay where you are? I'm still on XXKI3, which is 2.3.5, and I haven't flashed anything newer yet because everything works just fine for me. (I'll eventually go to ICS, I'm just waiting until I'm completely confident all the bugs have been squashed...)
Oh, and there is no 2.3.7 for this phone. 2.3.7 was a Nexus S 4g specific update to add Google Wallet support.
You right, 2.3.6 is very good for me at this time.
But are you sure CFROOT LA4 work fine for my LA3 firmeware, no brick after ?
