Vibrant ATT 3G?? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have 2 unlocked vibrant phones working in Mexico using Telcel carrier, Telcel uses the same bands as ATT, I have a question, is possible to change the modem to use the 850mhz(3G) instead of Tmobile? I mean, is possible to modify the vibrant model to work in ATT 3g? I know they sell the captivate but for me the vibrant looks better
Thanks for you help

I am pretty sure that if you use a Captivate modem with a Vibrant 3g will work on ATT.

AFAIK, it's not possible to use the Vibrant with the 850MHz band for 3G. I have a Vibrant on AT&T and it works fine using the stock Vibrant modem with AT&T's 1900MHz 3G Band, but not the 850MHz one. Also, I don't think the Captivate modem works with the Vibrant, and even if it did, I doubt it would change the supported frequencies.

If you try it I am pretty sure it would, remember that thread about the modems and how GT-I9000 modems work on Vibrant. Well, one user said that he had had edge all along with his Vibrant then he tried a Captivate modem and wallah 3G.

Well I'm not sure what he was doing, but I've had 3G with a Vibrant on AT&T regardless of which vibrant modem I was on. I had tried this long ago and was experimenting with it. I turned off all of the bands except the WCDMA 850 one, but then it said "No Signal."
And like I said, the Vibrant DOES do 3G on AT&T, but it does it using AT&T's 1900MHz WCDMA band, instead of the 850MHz, but according to the Wikipedia, the OP's carrier is only using 850MHz, which I have found to not be supported in the Vibrant unless something changed recently

[Q] No 3G network on HD2 using 2.2 Froyo Cyanogen mod 6

Hello,
I recently bought a HTC HD2 and gotten unlocked to work with my ATT sim card also I had someone install the 2.2 Froyo Android software using Cyanogen Mod 6. Since I had the phone I have only been using Edge network and I know for sure we have 3g coverage. How can I get my 3G network to work on my phone? Please help. I am a newb when it comes to cell phones.
Thanks
Matt
someone correct me if i am wrong but the 3g bands for att and t-mo are different so even if you have 3g coverage you would only get edge. For faster speeds youll have to use wifi.
Do you have a Telstra-branded HD2? IIRC, Telstra uses the same 3G bands as AT&T. In that case you should be able to get 3G. Otherwise, the unbranded & T-Mo branded HD2s wouldn't work with AT&T 3G.

Unless you have the Telstra HD2 (there will be a T in an oval on the back bottom cover), you won't get 3G on ATT. The Telstra model is the only one with the ATT 3G band (the 850mhz UMTS band).
You will ALSO need to have 850mhz ATT coverage in the areas where you live and travel to get 3G on that model.
Hope this helps...
Hi!
I was wondering if there is a way to change that? Installing a new ROM, a software or something!! I bought the TMo HD2 and brought it to South America. Here we use the 850 MHz frequency for 3G, and I just found out the HD2 works with 3G networks in the 1700 and 2100 MHz frequencies =( Is there a way I can change that ???

No 3G? 1900 but it only does EDGE... help!

My service provider Cable&Wireless Panama uses 1900 band for 3G, but I NEVER, NEVER EVER get anything but EDGE data... ever.
I have my phone set to "GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode)" in Network settings, but I could choose one or the other.
Which should I pick? I don't know what's up, but I can never get 3G and I know that the Vibrant supports 1900, which they use for 3G.
They tell me that 3G should appear there as an option, (at least on the Galaxy S i9000 that they support, but it doesn't on the Vibrant.
Can anyone give me some advice? I'm really stumped, because I was thinking it would work fine. I'm unlocked, Rooted, running Bionix-v but I've never been able to get anything but EDGE data and they say I should have 3G in most areas, but I've never even seen it once.
Not trying to be a jerk here, but are you absolutely sure your carrier uses 1900MHz for 3G specifically?
If you search for "List of UMTS networks" on Wikipedia, it lists Cable and Wireless as 850MHz. Another thread on androidforums.com titled "i9000 No 3G after update" talks about getting an i9000 working on 850MHz for Cable and Wireless.
Also, just to clarify, you are using the T-Mobile/American Vibrant?
Hope you figure it out.

Well, I was just on the line with them and asked specifically and two different reps (I tried twice) confirmed it was 1900 for 3G, so I do think it is.
They could be wrong, I guess, because most customer service reps are idiots throughout the world, but I don't know.
change your APN.
I bet it's set to epc.tmobile.com
either that or it's set to internet

either it's the apn, or more likely: Cable & Wireless Panama are on 850.

No, it's connnecting, and I get data via EDGE, as I said, the APN is correct:
apn01.cwpanama.com.pa
I just don't get any 3G signal... ever, but according to CW, I should if I use 1900, which the Vibrant supports.

again, Cable and Wireless doesn't use 1900. They use 850.
If you're stuck with the Vibrant, you might try Movistar? Looks like they might support both.
I know these aren't the answers you wanted to hear though. Sorry man.

I appreciate the help, guys.
I still find it confusing that the phone they support officially (they sell the i9000 here for like $800US) is listed as supporting the same 3G bands as the Vibrant, including 1900, which they quoted to me twice, but somehow, my Vibrant won't connect to 3G, so probably they are just idiots, as usual.
I might have to go with another carrier. Problem is that CW is the cheapest, by almost half. I guess you get what you pay for.
Movistar 850 pana..no tienen 3g son puro bulls**t,
Digicel y Claro si estan levantando 3g con la banda 1900.
Suerte

Hey donalgodon, I got the exact same problem with my Nexus S, same provider, same network configuration. Did you figure it out? I sent you a pm, let me know.
I was just reading this on Wikipedia.
In the bands section of T-mobile and thus their phones, 2g is supported by 850 and 1900. 3g is tied to 1700. I thought I had read it differently before but upon checking up on this once again (just now) that is what I have to offer. So I would assume if your carrier doesn't use 1700 for 3g then you would not ever get 3g.

The Samsung Vibrant supports 3g on UMTS Bands I (2100), II (1900) and IV (AWS/1700).
If your carrier uses any of these bands for their 3g, you will get 3g.
If your carrier uses the 850 band for 3g, you will not get 3g.
Donalgodon's carrier uses 850. That's why it's not working.

[Q] Custom modem or something else for 850mhz 3G on the vibrant?

Hello everyone i Live in Panama and my provider (Cable and Wireless Panama) uses 850mhz band for 3G, i've been searching on the forums but I didnt found a clear answer if it is posisble or not to use the band for 3G on the vibrant.
Maybe with a custom modem, a i9000 port or something else?
Thanks
download sgs tools do research how to navigate in menu and what is where and what for and ,there is option for switching bands on the fly .

If you've got a T-Mobile Vibrant (T959); it wouldn't be possible to get 3g on the 850mhz band. The T959 only has AWS(1700/2100)/1900/2100 for 3g. This is a hardware limitation (radio), so there isn't any software fixes that will allow you to be on anything other than EDGE in this case.
IIRC, the Bell Vibrant (i9000m) would get along just fine with your carrier because it has the 850mhz radio.
As far as I know, the Vibrant doesn't have the hardware capabilities for the 850mhz band. Your better off going and buying an i9000, which should work fine.
thanks
Thanks for the responeses, well it looks like i will have to change the phone/change carrier (most likely because C&W Panama sucks!)
i have a Samsung Galaxy i9000...
With Cable & Wireless Panama (+movil) carrier and cant get 3G coverage!!!
Android 2.2 working great!!!
Any idea???
thanks!
The vibrant does have 850mhz. You just have to enable it by using a code in the dialer to gain access to the band selection menu.

[Q] How to Change the modem of T959 to I9000?

I have seen many Thread about I9000 trying to convert T959 modem to use the T-mobile network. What i couldn't find is from T959 to I9000 to make it to the international version.
I have the T-Mobile Vibrant T-959 unlocked with ECLAIR. I know that the network band of this phone is 850/900/1800/1900. i found the result according to Samsung website. I know in another post it was said that it is hardware issue but the hardware is 850/900/1800/1900.
I live in the United Arab Emirates and the network band here is 900/1800 similar to the European or Asian Network. but the T-mobile uses 850/1900 so i couldn't get 3G or any kind of internet connection here, unless i find a WiFi connection. I need the 3G connection on the move.
I want to know is there any way to change the the modem band to I9000? so that i can use a custom rom like Darky which is Stable according to many users.
I would never be using the phone on US T-mobile or any Network in the US.
You might think this Question is redundant and has already been answered but i search every where but it comes back empty.
Your feedback would be highly Appreciated!!!!
I don't think you can actually change your phone's bands.
However, an unlocked US T-Mobile Vibrant should be working on 3G. According to Wikipedia, the two 3G networks in UAE (du and Etisalat?) use the 2100MHz band, which should be supported.
Thanks for the reply, i tried everything but nothing worked.
One more question to ask, what will happen if i flash i9000 rom and radio on a T-mobile phone. Or should i just flash it with a T-mobile rom without changing the radio, and if the sim gets locked I will just unlock?
this is the final question to ask.
Don't know if this helps but I use my unlocked vibrant in the uk, so if European bands are the same...it should work.
You can change roms and I would recommend you should but you can't use an i9000 modem.
Do you have a Sim with a data plan?
Can you text or make calls?

Yes i can make a calls and send Text but no internet connection. I just bought data plan for my sim.
So i Should get Vibrant custom rom not the I9000 rom?
And thank you Guys for your replay, I hope this tread will help other confused users on XDA
I would like everyone to know that it is not good thing to change there modem from T959 to i9000 your phone will brick never do it.
I just flashed a new rom from Trigger 3.2 which upgraded to Froyo 2.2 and i put in the settings for the Access Point and it works perfectly.
So if you have any difficulty accessing 3g or HSDPA connection on android 2.1 just upgrade it and it will work.
How did you conclude you're not on 3G? Do you get EDGE or GPRS internet connection?
So i need the 1800 mhz how can i do?
Flash a i9000 modem and see if it works.

There is the possibility to brick the phone?

[Q] 3G over 900MHz band

I everybody. I live in Spain where most operators will be using the 900MHz band for 3G (not GSM900). My Vibrant is a T-Mobile branded Vibrant currently uses the 2100MHz band for 3G.
The question is: Will my Vibrant be able to use the new 900MHz band for 3G? I know that the I9000 supports it, but how about the SGH-T959?
The vibrant's full specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_vibrant-3416.php
I'd guess it can?
I don't think it can. GSM maybe but not 3G. I9000 uses 900MHz but Vibrant replaced that with 1700 for T-mobile's network.
Check out this thread in the Developers Forum, it talks about flashing the I9000 modems to the Vibrant.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128571
I've flashed some I9000 modems, but I cannot seem to connect to 3G. They refuse to connect even to the 2100MHz band.
Any thoughts on this?

looking for T959 Telus KG2 returned a few irrelevant results and for KG2 I can't find other than Captivate modems Can you point me to the right direction?
