[Q] State of AOSP Rom development. - HTC EVO 3D

So let's assume that recovery and s-off are already here, what would we need to start compiling AOSP roms? Would we have 4g, or would we have to reverse engineer the radio interface again? Would reverse engineering the 3D function be plausible? Does MIUI work on qHD devices?
The possibility of multi boot on eMMc has my mind racing with these questions. I hope what the devs have learned from getting s-off and the work that was done on the og Evo expedites the process of getting AOSP roms to our 3D powerhouses.

I am really hoping that Wimax on AOSP won't require reverse engineering again. That was a tough and time consuming project for teamwin. It would fantastic if what was done to get it working on the Evo4G can be implemented on this phone, which I don't think is out of the question...because I'm almost positive that the 3D has the same wimax chip as the Evo 4g did. As far as the 3d function, and MIUI with qHD, I have no idea. I could care less about the 3d function working on AOSP. Working wimax is more important to me.

Can the OG Evo roms be supported on the 3D?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Maybe ported, but I don't see it happening. Its the Sensation and Evo3d RoMs people want on their EVO 4g's.
Nope, unless as phatman said it it has to be ported. Boot image, drivers and a whole host of other items must be taken into account for it and be put in to just to boot. Then making sure everything works, wifi Bluetooth..etc. I am trying to port the htc shift 4g, my first rom...and let me tell you..it is not fun. I miss some of the great roms we had for the OG evo. This is changing as more developers learn about the internals of the new sense 3.0 and the internals of our bad beast.

3d without sense???

Hey is there any non HTC sense ROM out there with the 3d camera on it. I flashed miui earlier and it was awesome but it didn't have the 3d camera!
thx,

Short answer: I doubt it. I'm also skeptical any non HTC sense ROM will receive 3D support. The 3D support is fairly complicated, especially given all the source code is closed. In order to get access to any of it, it will require a developer to reverse engineer HTC's work.
Reverse engineering a massive function such as 3D would be a very time intensive task. Most developers probably don't have the time to dive into reversing engineering the 3D, especially when the outlook seems to be this is the only 3D device released on sprint and no future devices has been announced to support 3D.
Sorry that makes a pretty glummy picture although all my opinion and speculation I think it expresses the view points of most of the community.
If HTC were to open source their 3D code, wow, it would probably be adopted and improved very quickly by the community.
Hope that helps explain some of the issues around porting HTC 3D support to non HTC Sense ROMs!

Written perfectly,
I'm not a dev. But I think the 3d has actually slowed the development of a lot of things as a result of that unknown code,
And miui's camera barely works.. if they are having trouble with that just imagine trying to mess with 3d,

Have you tried to use Senseless rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198099
Ok oh well. You guys should have seen me when I successfully flashed MIUI, I was like a kid I'm a candy store man (this if the first device I have ever had to support it) but then I tried to take a picture and what the hell, no 3D. I didn't buy a 3D phone to not freaking use it. Oh well though, I guess I'll just be a sense guy until (or if) HTC stops bring stingy with the 3D source. Thanks anyway dudes...

Or try hd revolution senseless rom.... The 3d camera should work on that.

Try the DarkSense Rom... I actually like Sense but I Flashed that Rom thinking it had Sense but it Didn't have the Home screen but had the other Sense stuff! So it might have the 3D Camera?
Im using WTSB Rom now, its the fastest ROM I have ever seen. I just need to learn how to flash the correct kernel on hboot 1.5

I'm running Senseless by scrosler and the 3D camera works just fine. No problem at all. And as the name states, there is no Sense.

I can confirm this....I'm on senseless rom too and 3d camera works just fine.
another +1 for senseless, but i switched back to cleanrom myself
Senseless is still a Sense based ROM, it just has Rosie and HTC Widgets removed. OP is probably wondering about getting 3d working on actual AOSP, which won't happen for a very long time, if ever.
you can get pretty close to an AOSP experience with a Sense Rom if you are not afraid to remove apps. my wife and I are both running SteelRom 2.62, but our phones look very different. I took out almost everything made by HTC and have the barebones for Sense-only stuff to work, like the 3D camera

[To Devs] AOSP based kernel

Since HTC released the right kernel sources now it should possible
to build AOSP based kernels.
Any Dev are working on this?
No one?
So we can something try with MIUI or CM7.
I asked the evervolv cdma dev. He said their should be a cyanogen soon, or wait for ics. Don't quote me on this though....
Sent from my Evo 3D GSM...bring on the AOSP!!!
Does that men that 3D capabilities will work in AOSP roms, because I was going to take a crack at building ICS but without the 3D I say to hell with it lol
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
From what I read the 3d won't work and htc have closed the source. I wouldnt care too much. I love the speed of cm7, the look amd a whole lot more.
Would be a bit annoying to own a 3d phone with no 3d.... Would be cool if you could dual boot then use 3d. I think that may be the only solution. ( I remember reading this could be done)
Sent from my Evo 3D GSM...bring on the AOSP!!!
AOSP based kernel would be nice,so we can try something with CM7 or MIUI,but first
we need the kernel,I think!
And Yes,at the moment 3D not working on MIUI/AOSP!

4G MIUI

Is there a way to get 4G/WIMAX
working in the MIUI ROM for HTC EVO 3D???
yes but I refuse to release the source code that I made to get it working. I shall go to my grave with it.

it requires reverse engineering from sense, since wimax is closed source, it makes this VERY difficult. I hope that team win will be able to do this like they did for the evo4G, but for now, I can run miui on 3G, it's just as elegant

Great answer above, couldn't have said it better myself!
Same logic applies to 3D as it does to 4G support. HTC closed source code and requires reverse engineering.
As soon as 4G and/or 3D are reversed and supported this will probably occur with relation to CM, MIUI should quickly use the same files/code to add into their ROM.
Would watch for support in CM as this should be an early indicator as to the status of support in MIUI.

Evo4g doesn't have 4g I know this cuz I'm running miui on my evo 4g right now. Unless you ment the thunderbold. Those guys have LTE working on miui Rom. dont know how they did it but dam they are geniuses

EVO 4G has 4G support in CM. I thought I remember hearing MIUI used the CM code for 4G support on the EVO 4G but perhaps they haven't. Either way, once CM supports 4G and 3D, MIUI will technically be able to as CM open sources all their code and is based on AOSP which MIUI also states they are based on.
Hope that helps!

As far as I'm aware, and I could be wrong, but the issue lies with the hardware containing 2 cameras for the 3D functionality as opposed to be ICS/Gingerbread related. This issue is present on any EVO 3D AOSP based ROM, but not present on any EVO 3D Sense based ROM.
The stock HTC Sense camera application which supports 3D and works with the device's cameras, is closed source and proprietary. As such, HTC has not released the source code to *officially* support their dual camera 3D functionality.
This leaves developers in a bit of a bind and forces them to either reverse the closed source stock Camera application and make changes through the reversed code or use the AOSP camera and "port" in the reversed closed source HTC code.
Both of these situations are less than ideal and the 2nd situation, porting into AOSP, takes quite a bit of work and development.
If I'm wrong and somebody/group has completed the steps of modifying/porting, hopefully somebody will post up the correct info with some links!
Hope that helps add some technical details!
