[Q] Unlocking the Bootloader - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, and pardon my ignorance. I've looked through all the information on Pudding, but I'm still having a bit of a problem here...
I have the OTA 2.3.4 update for my Atrix, and I have since rooted via super user. Now, in my attempt to get a more visually appealing interface (I HATE the 2.3.4 motoblur!), I'd like to install a custom ROM. In order to do so, I have to install pudding, correct?
In my attempts to do so, I downloaded the ATT 2.3.4 pudding+root sbf. Basically... This is where I get lost. There doesn't seem to be any clear information on what to do after that.
Thank you SO MUCH for your help, and sorry if this is a super n00b question.

You need to flash it via RSD. (turn phone into RSD mode, connect to computer, open RSD, in RSD choose the SBF, then click start).

I used the automatic script found in the general section.

Unlocking the Bootloader

thank you mystic and sekhar.
I'm trying the automatic route, suggested by sekhar, but on step 2 where it asks you to select your version, the instructions indicate it should reboot (especially on 4.5.91, but my device never reboots. Any subsequent key strokes don't seem to change anything...
Sorry again for being such a n00b, but I'm still lost.
Thank you so much for your help.

by the way, I am in RSD mode on my Atrix.

Alright, got it working. Thanks so much everybody!

how did u get around ur problem?

All u would've had to do if already on stock 2.3.4 GB is download the unlocked and flash it through RSD no need to redownload the whole system image. For anyone else which has same problem.

[Q] Unlocking BL/Moving towards ROMs

With the recent explosion of information, I'm getting a little confused on what steps I need to take (areas to read about) in regards to getting a custom ROM.
I sit on the last version of gingerblur.
Can anyone point me to what I need to do next/Where I should read? I'm getting things confused as there seem to be different ways to go about this, with different results. Many thanks in advance.
Ditto.
I stayed stock 1.83 and downloaded latest update, from what I read ... I can no longer unlock bootloader. Would be nice to see Ken P post another n00b guide like he did with gingerblur.

No it IS possible to unlock using 2.3 OTA as a base.
However you will soft-brick it, then have to recover. It is a bit heartstopping.
I agree the info is a bit of a mess however its basically this method with a DIFFERENT PUDDING FILE (make sure you grab the one marked for AT&T 2.3 OTA).
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
As for the softbrick, more details in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
I'm not an expert but hope above helps. FWIW yeah I used the script
These are useful posts bro. Thanks

no worries. Just DON'T PANIC when it softbricks, and immediately (before the 5 second timeout) put it into fastboot mode, then keep going with fastboot oem unlock process seems to do the trick.
At least thats what the script seemed to do. Perhaps start a new topic to clarify with someone who did 2.3OTA unlock manually to confirm.
If I flash back to stock from Gingerblur, is it preferable to go to a certain version? Should I just use 1.8.3?
And does it matter if you use Service or Full? The only thing I can find is that "Full erases all your data and service does not." I assumed that flashing back to stock would erase everything regardless.
i will admit it def. is heart stopping to softbrick, but like he said just proceed with the fastboot unlock
I unlocked 2 days ago from OTA 2.3.4 using the full 4.5.91 sbf that includes pudding and preinstall root. I flashed the sbf using rsd 5.3.1 and then got a soft brick 0x1000 no os installed. I freaked out for a moment but after running the fastboot unlock commands the phone booted up and everything was smooth sailing from there out. Good luck!

Hey
If you are still on the 1.83 version, then I recommend this way:
1) Unlock your bootloader.
2) Install CWM.
3) Flash any 2.3.4 custom rom you desire.
Thats what I did 4 days ago, and everything went smooth, without any soft bricks, of heart failure.
I used this great tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
But, you can do it however you desire.
Hope it helped

Can anyone provide advice on these questions? The first commenter seems to be getting all the comments/advice.
I am on latest Gingerblur, and its my understanding that I need to get back to stock first.
scar I believe thats the case. In either event it couldn't possibly hurt. All the guides and testing has been done using one of the stock variants as base. I wouldn't even attempt it using gingerblur myself
Was able to flash back to full1.83, unlock bootloader, root and add rom. Aside from my mistake of picking wrong recovery the first time (and bootlooping) everything went smooth.

[Q] bricked once..let's not do it again. 4.1.83 @ 2.2.2

I bricked one Atrix already a few weeks ago, and have since gotten another...(don't wanna think about it)..
I had toyed with unlocking it, and 'rooted' using the gingerbreak method. I was then, bored, one day and installed CWM paid version(Since I had it on my Nexus One, and it popped up under 'my apps'). Out of curiosity I installed the bootloader via CWM, thinking it would fail before it broke anything..wrong.. It froze after a reboot, but after taking the battery out and back in came back up. Didn't think any more about it, and figured i'd finish the unlocking/flashing part some other time..
Meanwhile the annoying pending system update kept going off, and I inadvertently clicked download... it downloaded, so I figured might as well install and not worry about roms since with root I was able to use the google adhoc wifi apk, which is what I care about most. The install was stuck in an infinite loop. It would 'fail to load RSD', if you took the battery out it boot to android then reboot automatically for system update over and over. I tried using the RSD lite program at this point to flash back to stock rom, and ended up hard bricked...
So, forgive me for being a complete noob as I never had an issue with my nexus one. I am at 4.1.83, android 2.2.2. and baseband 1.7.15.. Which of the many tutorials and post should I follow? How safe are they? Did I brick because I had a partial 2.3.x install, and flashed back to a pre 2.3 base? I've read many post, but definitely a bit gun shy of bricking another Atrix. The phone keeps bugging me to update, and I keep hitting 'cancel'.
I'd like to unlock the boot loader for custom roms.
I'm also a heavy linux user, majority of tutorials seem to only imply windows with RSD lite? can this not be done with adb, and fastboot via linux?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
I would personally go HERE Read through the entire post, then read it again. And go with the ATT 2.3.4 pudding+root
That of course is after reading and re-reading THIS post! (also linked in the post above mine.
Just my opinion.. and make sure you read and nkow what to expect!

That references 4.5.91 and unless I missed it, doesn't explicitly state it's backwards compatible with 4.1.83 and 2.2.2. is it?
Should I update first, to be at those levels and just know not to flash to an earlier build(pre 2.3.4/4.5.91)?

Nope, don't update. It's safer to unlock BL while you are still at 4.1.83, you just need to download the correct unlock file from the pudding thread.
Otherwise the unlocking steps are exactly the same.
The easiest steps to unlocking are here:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
From there you can flash CWM in one minute.
From there you can flash any rom via CWM in two minutes.
Good luck and don't do anything stupid.

[Q] Need help updating rooting phone to gingerbread!!!!!!

Wow I’m really drained I’ve spent a lot of hours trying to update to gingerbread (OTA) but just can’t get anything to work.
My phone Atrix 4G currently running build OLYFR_U4_1.8.3, the phone is rooted and has the webtop hack.
What I have tried so far
I have tried to flash the spf file using RSD lite with the new gingerbread update. No luck about 10 min in the program stops and says flash failed . I tried using RSD lite to flash back to an earlier version again same problem flash fails .
I have tried the over the air update and it failed; I got the yellow triangle, when I got the yellow triangle I swiped the bottom of the screen and it said DockService.apk failed, so I searched and found numerous people saying I had to revert back to the orginal files if I did the webtop hack. I reverted back to the orginal files using super manager but now my DockService.apk, PhonePortal.apk, and DockProvider.apk all say (no install); it looks like this:
DockService.apk(no install)
I tried installing the apk files using super manager and it attempts to but fails .
I’m really at a loss here I have no idea what to try anymore this is just really kicking my butt, could someone please help me or point me in the right directions. Thank you in advance.
are you trying to unlock your bootloader? or just upgrade?
Have you tried flashing the pudding SBF?
I had a problem with the update and originally flashed the Fruit Cake img files using fastboot. Maybe that will work. Look for the Fruit Cake Thread in the Dev section, or try the pudding SBF..

thats why I asked if he wanted to unlock the bootloader.
He can't use pudding if doesn't want to unlock
I just want to upgrade.
your best bet would be flashing back to 1.8.3 stock and then trying to upgrade

I saw the fruit cake thing last night, but I’m confused how to use it.
I know I see an option for fastboot when I turn the phone on holding the power and down volume button but that’s where my knowledge ends, can you tell me or point to a thread on how to Fastboot?
I haven’t heard of the pudding SBF I will look more into that now, thanks.

I have the spf file for 1.8.3 but when i try using RSDlite to flash back it fails??
Is there another way to flash back??
fastboot works in conjunction with the command prompt on your pc. It's much better than rsd
Anyone got any ideas on why in super manager my dockservice, portal, and dockprovider all say no install in the GUI??
Is this going to affect me in anyway?

Not true, he can flash pudding and not unlock. I hadn't unlocked for a month or so after I had pudding. It runs fine without running command line oem unlock. ^_^
I had the same problem.
I update my phone successfully only thru my PC.
Download and install automated update tool from motorola support site which will guide you through the update process. This tool will upgrade your device to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) from any previously released version.

I'm going to guess this has to do with my files that say (no install)
namely the phone portal one, I believe that controls data
O god let us pray
I believe I'm having the same problem as you. NOTHING WORKS to update this damn thing. I even wiped it.

Bricked Atrix 4G 4.2.11.mb860.retail.en.fr

Hey I got this phone and it had the "version 4.2.11.mb860.retail.en.fr" and I tried to unlock the bootloader and tried to install gingerbread which is given in the motorola site.None worked for me, so what happened was I couldn't do any,and then I installed the clockworkmod with the wall charger and I searched that if something would go wrong with it cause I felt it kinda risky and I searched it again but in instructions and in some other forums said can install a custom rom. so I backed up everything and installed the cherry rom which i can find easily in the development forum, then after that I get this error msg at the boot screen "Failed to boot 2" "Starting RSD mode" so I downloaded the "Atrix 4G - US MB860" "Version: 4.5.91" 2.3.4 and downloaded the RSD lite application for windows 7 and tried flashing this software and at 100% it fails and fails. I don't know what I should do.and I'm downloading another froyo sbf file to reflash the system, I wish someone can help me over here and I really appreciate it. :|
You need to flash an sbf that fits with your phone!
You tried too much at once. Do some more research before you try anything again.

^This. People don't realize that flashing ROMS, custom kernels, unlocking, all this stuff is going to be risky. This is not for people who have little to no knowledge of how to do this stuff. If you ARE just starting out, like all of us are at some point, READ read READ. Search multiple articles and multiple sources before attempting anything and if you're not sure if you should do it, don't. Unless you have the money to spare to replace a bricked phone. When I took the plunge into the custom ROM scene, it was a new experience for me. But I made sure to follow instructions to the LETTER and have been fixing / working with computers for over a decade so experience does help a bit. Remember, the search button is yer friend and it will help you out when you're looking for more information on a topic.
Oh okay you don't have to say these things, I know that I'm a noob and I'm just living in china and I just only wanted to install gingerbread and here we go I can't flash and I just need help on this and yea I am still searching for this, I'm glad if you can help me out.
So I'm guessing there's no way to get gingerbread for this particular built.
I've this too Version.4.2.11.MB860.Retail.en.FR

Flashing Rogers ROM over top of LATAM ROM?

So I've been having issues lately with my update some time ago to official Rogers ICS 4.0.4. The issue is my root access. I had root access on 2.3.6 and everything functioned perfectly. However when I updated to ICS I sort of lost root. Why I say sort of, is because root files like su are still present but not functioning correctly. When I try to gain root access SuperSU tells me my su file is out of date. Also when I try to modify su in any way it gives me access denied. pedrotorresfilho being the good fellow that he is has been helping point me in the right direction as to what is happening. I just figured instead of bombarding his private messages with multi-questions I would post my troubles here in the hopes of gaining some more insight into the issue.
I now know that apparently my su file is damaged (was kind of obvious). Pedro has directed me to the path of factory reset/flashing the TIM.BR rom via RSD Lite. Keep in mind that I am still very much a n00b with linux/android. I AM learning, but slowly. I've been reading post after post here on xda and have actually learned quite a bit so far, yay. I now know what RSD Lite is and what it is used for. Haven't dared try it yet though. ANYHOW. I am wondering if when I do flash this LATAM rom and totally wipe my phone, can I somehow install a stock rogers ROM overtop? I do realize that there are no fastboot files for Rogers and that the BR version will suspositly flash on rogers razrs just fine. I'm just a little skeptical as to the aftermath. I don't want to lose any functionality. I've heard of people having txt message issues or data connection problems etc. Also I suppose I would lose the use of apps like Rogers My Account. This I can probably look past, it's the major issues I need to dodge.
I basically just want to gain my root access again and update to Rogers JB and keep root via OTA Rootkeeper. I don't know if that is even possible with my current broken su status. I don't know if I should just maybe say goodbye to rogers stock and go the Cyanogen mod route?
ANY opinions/tips for this whole scenario would be MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks!
tbh, i didnt read it all, its too long lol.... sorry.
but here's what i know (assuming u have an XT910)
1. u can fastboot rogers ICS using RSD lite. super easy.
2. u can fastboot LATAM ICS using RSD lite. also super easy.
3. u can also fastboot rogers JB using RSD lite 6.0. easy and best - but remember so far there's no root and u CANT go back to ICS.
ICS files: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_spyder/list.php
JB files: check RAZR development forum, one of the sticky by pzyduck.

Ya I tend to ramble on sometimes, no apology needed. In fact I should thank you! This is defiantly a step in the right direction and hopefully the solution I need. As I said before being the n00b that I am to this stuff I already screwed up my phone once. I believe I was trying to use RSD Lite and flash one of those ROM files. Perhaps I used the wrong one, I don't know. All I know is it failed and I was stuck in fastboot failure. I did fix this with an empty radio img, but I don't want to have the same issues again.
Is there anything I need to do before I do this? Also are there any good n00b oriented tutorials related to using RSD Lite to 'fastboot'? THANKS AGAIN!
EDIT: Once again Pedro has come through with more info for me. I was directed to this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974568 which seems pretty straightforward. I just need to know if I need to do anything other than factory reset that was suggested by Pedro before I proceed. Also by AP Fastboot mode they mean powering off then holding volume - and power? Is that fastboot mode?
SUCCESS! I used the recovery to wipe my data/factory reset. Then used latest RSD Lite to flash the Rogers ICS fastboot file and it went without a hitch. People on this forum are awesome. Special thanks to R3dbeaver and pedrotorresfilho for the awesome info!
Now I'm going to try and keep my root when I update to JB, wish me luck

yes, google is your best friend. pedro is the next best thing
Well I went ahead and protected root using OTA Rootkeeper then install JB official update and successfully restored root. Awesome, but then I went and did something stupid and installed a program called Chainfire 3D and ran it, accepted the warning message totally by accident and completely screwed my phone again. I then had to fastboot (AGAIN) the ROM for JB, so I now have an unrooted RAZR running JB. Oh well, that'll learn me!
