Has anybody seen 4G expand into their city in the past 4-6 months?
I'm searching the web and can't find any evidence that they are continuing to expand their 4g. I read on a couple web sites/forums that they just need to flip a switch and their existing 4g towers will increase the area they are covering but I can't find any evidence to support that they are actually doing this.
It seems as though Wimax expansion has halted. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

WiMax 4G dev has come to a slow crawl due to Clearwires $$$$ problems and there new LTE test markets, Clearwire has already started its FCC approval for LTE/WiMax Modems.

Yep pretty much.
Nope WiMax is pretty much dead. Sprint just announced this,
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/07/28/sprint-confirms-4g-lte-deal-with-lightsquared/
Looks like there going a different route with LTE. Clearwire was a great concept but they grew too fast and overstretched themselves.
While Sprint hasn't announced anything, Clear has continued to turn on towers nationwide to avoid the FCC breathing down their necks about not using their licenses.
Best place to look for 4g coverage is www.clear.com/coverage
I think it is complete BS. I dont have 4G in my area and honestly dont think I will within the next 2 years. When I first bought the Evo 4G, I thought I would have 4G within the year. 6 months after purchase I had I feeling it would never make it here. I bought the 3D with no expectations of ever being able to use the 4G on it....it sucks, but its reality

Yup, 15 days ago. See this Engadget article and click on Show Press Release. I live in one of those towns (Paramus) but unfortunately I'm on the side of town where I have no Sprint coverage and rely pretty much entirely on the free Airrave they gave me.

Just because Sprint doesn't show it on their coverage map doesn't mean there's none in your area. My co-worker makes it a habit to check Clear's coverage map daily. A couple months ago he noticed they had our town (40,000 people) lit up pretty well. Turned on 4G and sho' nuff I was able to connect. It shows up as Sprint and the speeds not bad. Check www.clear.com/coverage

This all sounds good, it all sounded good when Sprint's 4G first rolled out, and I bought the EVO 4G last year. So over a year later and STILL no 4G in all of SC, I mean come on.
Hell, I'd be happy with just GOOD 3g coverage, not 150 kbps crap speeds.
4g rolled out in May here, I couldn't get it inside though, noticed the other day I get a single bar inside now. Clearwire is still rolling it out. Sprint argued with me about 4g being in my area when I upgraded to the 3d.
Download sensorly from the market and use that instead.

My question is, with this LTE announcement, what will happen with the existing 4G Phones?
A simple OTA will fix this?
When will this start?

'effin A right! Last year, I switched to Sprint and got the Evo 4G with high hopes of getting 4G in my bustling college town in Central VA. Now, over a year later, I've stepped up to the 3D and still don't have reasonable 3G coverage, much less 4G. I'll stick with Sprint a while longer, but this ****'s gotta stop. Big promises only get new customers for so long before they get pissed off and leave.

AND on top of that, Verizon rolled out their LTE here (I'm just outside Columbia, SC) and my house is in LTE coverage. A buddy of mine has a verizon work phone (droid charge, hes in columbia) he pulls 24 meg down and like 5-6 meg up, from his house. That stuff pisses me off. Sprint was first with 4G, Verizon was late to the game but they've expanded far more than Sprint ever did, and ton's faster and in my area!

I think its still rolling, just slowly. I used to never get 4g at work, I now get it with solid signal.
I still am leaning towards the LTE being for voice over LTE. A few weeks ago they had a bunch of positions open up specifically to set up a voice over lte network, that was the whole point of the jobs.
I've been waiting on 4G since the day the OG evo came out, I bought it thinking I'd eventually have it, if not a year, then by the end of my contract.
Fast forward to today, I have an Evo 3D and still no 4G. But now the town over has 4G, and it's not the biggest or most crowded town, but what I don't understand is why they didn't turn 4G on in the metropolitan town of Springfield MA, instead of west springfield? There's gotta be way more sprint users in Springfield, and I'm there everyday.
Verizon's LTE is looking better and better everyday. If they get a superphone like the Evo 3D or the Sensation, I might just switch. Especially since Sprint can never seem to bill me properly
This is what's Going to happen.
Sprint Invested Heavily with Clearwire they own 51% + market share
Sprint Just invested in LightSquared with a 15year Deal
Clearwire has been rumored to switch to LTE when the market required it.
Dan Hesse 4g Announcement This Fall.

Clearwire Switch to LTE will be announced this Fall.

So what does that Entail, Clearwire / Lightsquared for LTE network.
Clear to switch over current market to LTE, w/ the option of wimax as a backup.
Lightsqaured to pick up the slack in the currently missing markets to fill the void

yea but who knows when the lte will be out and rocking if i didnt have a great deal with sprint i would have jumped but 4 phones unlimted everything for under 200 a month i just can't leave that lol
I'd rather pay less and deal with decent 3g than pay what Verizon charges for every little random thing.
I can watch Netflix while sitting at the park, or browse while listing to chronix radio, Im not trying to beat a missle in download speeds here lol.
The equipment is up already so it'll be fast. That's the last worry I have. I just hope we don't go through a year of only lte netbooks & data cards before we see the phones.
My Wimax speed is fine, I just want better range & wall penetration for when I'm at the office.

Until very recently VZW also made you choose 4g and an old phone or 3g and a new phone. Droid 3 3g only work phone FTL.

Hell for many of us the 3G isnt even decent.
its not wimax that sucks

its the frequency and backhaul that sucks which wimax has nothing to with.

ehhh lets not start a debate here, but LTE is superior to Wimax, which is why all the major carriers are using it and or about to. (sprint)
The inherent flaw with Wimax is the frequency it uses, BUT isnt dependant on Sprint. Clearwire modems have the same trouble penetrating buildings and stuff like that because of the high frequency. TRUE wimax could be theoretically better, but LTE is more practical in real world usage because of the lower frequency it uses, which is better when it comes to range and penetration.
The variable here is the LTE network on VZ has barely been tapped into. Who knows what real world speeds will come when it finally gets saturated with 4G users.
So as of RIGHT NOW. LTE is beating out Wimax...Dan Hesse has admitted it

My LTE speeds have actually gotten faster since I got my TB. Got a bump after the outage and again after the first expansion. I'm yet to go below 18 MB/sec and average around 22-25. AND I got it while the data was still unlimited.

Yeah makes me wish I would have switched to Verizon the day before they implemented the data caps. I had called up a Verizon business rep and everything, but I couldn't justify the huge price increase.
i wish i could say that i dont care about 4g because 3g is ok, but 3g blows just as hard as 4g in my area (ok not AS bad, i literally dont get 4g here) but my 3g speeds generally range from 5-40kbps and usually get almost no upload at all. even with getting a good price on my plan, sub dial up speeds is literally ridiculous.
Lmao My dad brags about the data speeds (Verizon) over sprint. I said so what do you want a cookie? If I wanted to be on Verizon Id be on Verizon. He dropped it after that.
While not Evo 3D related, sprint is moving forward with their Network Vision plan. Everyone has to start somewhere.

This is why I'm waiting until long after my renewal upgrade is available (march) to re-sign. I'd be an idiot to waste my upgrade on a phone that can't take advantage of the coming upgraded tech. I'm hoping my 3D is only going to be needed for 6mths or so.
The sprint towers being deployed for lte are multimodal. Meaning they support multiple bands and would give us better signal all around and faster 3g when they do the 800 mhz switch.
Also I've read rumored (I know rumors are just that) that sprint may release phones that support both lte and wimax in 1 chip. If you upgrade to 1 of those earlier models coming out, you should be in the clear. We'll see though.

It took Sprint how long to release a Wimax phone after the first Wimax tower was put up?
As I recall, Sprint was only selling Wimax data cards for quite a while before the Evo 4G launched.
If history repeats, Sprint won't have an LTE (or network optimized, whatever) phone for quite a while. And when they do get one, they will probably require all kinds of increased fees and plans in order to get it.
I hope I'm wrong, but my faith in Sprint is pretty low these days.

I'm with you on that one, Slim. I switched to Sprint 18 months ago (EVO 4G) on the promise of 4G. Now, my bustling college town 100 miles from DC STILL doesn't have Wimax, 3G is STILL a joke here and there's no way I can reasonably expect LTE to be implemented here for at least another year or so. Oh yeah, and voice coverage is so bad that walking inside a one-story brick building, my office, routinely causes dropped calls.

WiMax was up well before Sprint had a WiMax phone b/c Clearwire had WiMax up and was doing nothing but data plans for people.
Regardless of History the VP Sprint has already stated many times their first LTE phone will come around 2nd half of 2012. Lately being more specific he said it looks like 3rd qtr of 2012.
You can say what you want about their lack of wimax in cities after saying they would have it but i bet you wont find where the VP was stating wimax would be in city X by time X and then they failed to comply. Most of the claims of wimax coming to city X's are from sprint reps which we all know is complete crap. All the other statements are very general.
LTE phone will be on sprints network next year i guarantee it, willing to bet whatever you want on that. The WiMax rollout is completely different than the LTE rollout. LTE already has its suppliers signed up and set to roll out in their respective sections of the US. On top of that they have Lightsquared coming in too doing their LTE, and then in future after 2015 you have Clearwire going LTE.

not likely. VP said 3rd qtr last time he spoke. few months wont make much diff anyway. I just hope that "phone" hes talking about isn't the iPhone5 with LTE as i refuse to get that.
I just dont want to deal with HTC releasing another WiMax super phone in juneish and then doing a LTE phone the following year. Unless that WiMax phone has the new qualcomm chips that have LTE modem built into the die! That will be my next phone whenever it comes period.
I woke up this morning to a very nice surprise.... 4G LTE in my house. I live on a small backroad in a small town called LaGrange, GA so I was completely shocked. I did notice that my phone said 4G 3 times in the past few weeks for a few seconds as I was connecting to WiFi, I thought it was just a bug, but now I not so sure. I think it may have been something to do with testing. I am completely shocked because the 2 bigger towns north and south of me (Newnan and Columbus) still don't have 4g. It's also pretty fun to laugh at my wife for getting a IPhone 4s a few weeks ago and now she gets to look forward to being stuck for 2 years on 3g. I have no feeling she will come around though and decide to sell that piece of junk and get a real phone.
BTW dies anyone know if the trick for get unlimited data still works. I kinda doubt I would need it, but it would be nice not to have to worry about going over 4gbs and having to worry about overages. Thanks

I just decided to read that article, I don't know if I believe it or not. Also, I don't care enough to do more research.

Yes, there is no LTE in any IPhone, only the new iPad. Iphones can only get hspa+ 4g which is honestly just souped up 3g. The speeds will never be constantly as high as LTE. The verizon version of the IPhone does not support any 4g. You know Apple would market the hell out of it if it did. I'm sure they would also try to brainwash people into believing they invented LTE technology. And then probably sue all Android hander makers for using the technology. F-ing scumbags.

I honestly think this was the roll out that was speculated for the 19th. I do hope you still get 4g soon tho. At my house I am getting 13-17mbps. But about 5 miles from here a coworker was pulling 35+mbps constantly.

Agreed and nice! F ATT & APPLE. I say this after having just bought an ipad but I would never touch the current iPhone and need apple products to be jailbroken as well.

Newnan GA finally got 4g... They haven't officially announced it and its not on their coverage map yet, but I was there yesterday and to my surprise I had 4g. They really needed it in Newnan because their 3g network was overloaded. Hopefully they will get Columbus GA soon. Then I will be happy.
oh man. georgia crew
when I go to my property past Benning, when I used to have att, it sucked, I switched after 16 yrs back in Nov to verizon when I got the rezound, now when I leave ATL to head to my cabin, service the whole time. it's crazy.
LOL at iphone 4g...
I'm getting almost the same speeds at my Comcast cable, but with incredible upload speeds
I just joined, so it won't let me post my speedtest.net image - 30.57 Mb/s down, 16.51 Mb/s up in South Jersey.
I got 25 up n 13 down right outside of atlanta
4g network has spread northeast of ATL to the Gainesville area this past month, got 40 down / 20 up near Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
I can't believe LaGrange got it before Columbus! I was stationed at Benning for a while before I got out (4th RTB). Wild, and for all of you posting your speeds, my sig is not my fastest speed, just too lazy to update I have gotten 72/down and 33/up. Change your server, the speed you see if basically a reflection of the server, not the actual speed you may or may not be getting.
And yea, LOL at AT&T, the VA is paying for me to have a One X. AT&T's "4g" HSPA+ here maxes out at something like 7/down for me...
I live about 30 minutes north of Yulee FL and 45 minutes south of Brunswick GA and they both have 4G. I wish there was a way to get a straight answer out of Verizon as to when they will close the gap. When I was in Yulee today I got about 10 up and 10 down. Not as good as some are getting but still a heck of a lot better than 3G, especially the up speed.
Can someone tell me why should I buy a phone that might not even see LTE by the time my 2 year contract is up. Are we all suckers?

I preordered from sprint... I'm starting to rethink my decision because we won't have lte until 2013ish.
My evo 3d is running ICS now, sprint ICS next month, I have 4g now in columbus, ohio.
I really want the bigger brother of my 3d but no lte prolly within the next year for me is making me mull over my decision.

I'm supposed to have 4g all over the san francisco bay area, but usually its sketchy at best especially indoors, and i'm indoors a lot so most of the time i'm on 3g anyway. Its a great phone on its own and while i will admit buying a phone that works with a network that isn't live yet sounds a little strange, there were a lot of people that did that with the original evo, myself included, and i never regretted it one minute.
Not sure if you're trolling or not, but i think its important to look at the whole picture instead of basing the decision of whether or not to get this phone based on when LTE is coming. If you don't care about LTE, then no, not a sucker at all. If you do care and think its a big deal but still buy the phone, then yes, definately a sucker.
LTE is not the determining factor for me. Phone functionality > speed. I have WiFi if I need it and I'm content with 3G speeds. Beverages been a problem before.

As was stated ealrier, I bought my Evo 4G before wimax was ever deployed in my area. I live most of my life on 3g anyways. I look at this as a great upgrade from my current EVO. So to answer your question do I feel like a sucker. Nope. I am very happy to pay to have a great phone.
Will
glad i live in nyc
we shall be getting LTE pretty soon
I have 4G now and can count the number of times I actually turned it on and used it on 1 hand..Doesn't matter to me....seems like the whole 3D thing to me.I only turned it on just to show somebody or just see if it works.

How soon is soon? Did sprint tell you that? I'm in Boston and like New York we both have Wimax, and I see no reason why Sprint would deploy LTE in those markets.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
Well I live in Puerto Rico and here we don't have Wimax and it has been 2 years since Wimax Coming Soon, so I'm really thinking about buying it or not, a lot of people don't care about 4G but really think about 2 years you will end up lock up of Sprint never give us LTE.
I think I will wait a little longer, maybe if they release a white version they convince me LOL
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
suckers? Not a chance. Sprint bet upon WiMAX, but LTE became the standard and now we have a beast of a device coming out in seven days. Granted it will take some time to build out the LTE network and complete all the network vision upgrades but it'll all be worth it in the end. You know the saying "Good things come to those who wait", yeah, its coming. I have no problem owning a phone with no LTE network, because I know my city/state will be getting it within the very near future.
I think just for the camera, the bigger screen, the thinness, internal memory, Ice cream, and a kickstand to boot. I am no sucker! Who needs LTE anyway. I still don't have 4G for my EVO 3D
Don't call me a Sucker, Sucker!
I mainly preordered cause im eleigible for upgrade and one of the two LTEVO i will be getting soon will be free. Sure ill miss WiMAX cause i tether my tail off when i have the time but thats part of the reason im keeping an OG Evo just in case. I considered switching to another carrier but sprint, although slow ATM, has been decent to me price wise and i dont have to worry as much as i would, and have, with any of the others.
my EVO 4g was a 4g phone but i NEVER got to use 4g in my 2 years with it. all well. Guess im a sucker! on to the LTE to never see LTE! woo!
If you read Engaget's or Cnet's review, they'll make you feel like a sucker.
But I don't, and here's why:
1) Live on the outskirts of DC, Baltimore side. LTE will be turned on very soon in Baltimore (End of May) and DC will be following shortly.
2) I had 4G on my Evo 4G and never used it in two years except for experimental purpose. It heated the phone, drained the battery, etc. Wifi and 3G packed a powerful punch better than turning off and on the 4G radio.
3) I know people with Verizon 4G LTE phones and they also have their 4G turned off because it also doesn't really work in buildings and overheat their phones.
So in short, if you have multiple wifi access areas w/ 3G, this is still a beastly phone. LTE is just one facet of it.
Not all of us. Some of us will be in LTE areas. However, if it is that important to you, don't get a 4G phone till you have 4G in your area and show Sprint you aren't a sucker. The phone is awesome without 4G.
Sprint visioned this phone release incorrectly. They either needed to a) leave the 4G LTE out of the phone title's (that would solve a lot of complaining) or b) released this phone with the announced turn-on of their LTE service.
Why are some people dying to get the EVO LTE when there is not LTE yet? From what I understand it will only work on the 3g and LTE network and for now the Sprint 3G sucks for the most part according to a lot of people. Didn't we learn from the Wimax fiasco? I live in Greensboro, NC and service here is really bad. We do have 4G if you can get it here and there so I would say we do not! I just don't see upgrading to a new technology phone when you can't take advantage of it for at least a year and some people 2-3 or more years. Yes, Sprint has to go to the LTE to survive but what if they don't and get bought out? No flaming just wondering. It is your money and you're free to choose the phone you like.
silly comment, dont buy it then, for some lte will be in there town very soon if not dont buy simple. its not all or nothing for all
this is a pointless thread
The phone is great without LTE. Also the wifi I'm around kills whatever LTE can do, Its gonna be a plus when its enabled.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2
LTE is one of the things it can do great, the phone's hardware makes it one of the best out right now and thus makes me want it, to upgrade my old 3D and Nexus S
Many reasons to upgrade...
like mentioned before the phone itself is an upgrade without LTE!!
And for the comment, "...lets not forget the WiMax fiasco..." that was all on Clearwire not Sprint. Big difference. Yes Sprint has majority ownership in Clearwire but they do NOT handle the day-to-day decisions for them in any way. The rollout of LTE/NetworkVision is being done by Sprint and already well underway as the contractors have been assigned their areas and are on the ground doing the work right now across the US. Its happening whether people want to believe it or not.
Now, if you live in a well covered WiMax area and use WiMax a ton right now & are not in one of the cities set to get NetworkVision in round 1(link in my sig), THEN I completely understand NOT getting this device as you will lose your WiMax and be without any 4G use for a long period of time.
I am mainly doing it for the specs. It is easier to spend more money and have a phone last a couple of years with higher specs then it is to get a moderately average spec phone every year... If that makes sense.
I really would like to play with the NFC stuff though
Hey, I know that the phone itself is an upgrade but is it enough to make it worth the money and the 2 year contract? What if the roll out is not really fast? Sprint is a little short on money and people are going to Verizon or other services even though they are paying a little more every month. Heck, I am debating that move myself but I do not like Verizon customer service and I really really love my EVO 4G! Only phone I ever had for a full two years.
I would think that a new phone will be out in less than six months that will be better than the EVO LTE for a lot of us that do not have very good 3G service and some 4g service here and there. Like I said, I am not flaming anyone. I am just trying to understand the urge when most of us do not have the service to take advantage of the phone.
Data capabilities get too much attention. Who cares. I have Wifi and 3G. Hasn't bothered me yet having only them two.
You must be in an office situation must of the time. I spend about 6 hours or more everyday on the road. Data is very important to me.

I was/will be there for you.
I have no problem upgrading to an LTE device, even if there is no LTE coverage in my area, I already know its coming to my area in the Round 2 rollout. Its time to upgrade my hardware to something better. The original EVO 4G was a game changer for the industry, and its successor will add to it - that is if it ever gets released in the country, and not permanently banned.
I'm getting the phone for the specs. 3g does all I need to do on the road and I honestly used 4g on about 3 times in my lifetime. Lte will be nice but I won't be seeing it around here for at least 18 months lol
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
to the original poster you are absolutely correct the thing has no mobile data service on it. When the original evo came out (which i had and loved it) 3g at least worked ok so no wimax was no big deal. Now 3g is a joke. You want to poke fun at apple, think of the fools that bought an iphone on sprint, no mobile data there either. I really hope lte comes soon because without it sprint might not make it. If you test drive a phone anything like you test drive a car you will say no thanks and go to the next dealer down the road. Glad my evo3d has wimax in my town.
I have 4G in my town and I don't even use it now..And Sprint 3G is actually pretty good where I live.Over 1.2MB down stream.
Plus the phone is beast.
<<I am a victim of Apple patent #5,946,647>>
Don't forget about those of us who don't even have access to WiMAX 4g anyway.
Outstanding phone - WiMAX - LTE > ok phone - WiMAX -LTE
Outstanding phone > ok phone
WOW!
If you get those 3G speeds than I can see getting the phone and and hoping for the new LTE coming. I barely get 150kbs if lucky(most of times between 5 and 70kbs) and if I get over 1Mbs is when I get on Wimax. My buddy's DroidX beats me almost each and every time especially on 3G. Heck, I check MSNBC a lot for news and sometimes it take more than two minutes just to load and sometimes I just close out of the browser because it is so slow. LOL

I moved out of a WiMax area over a year ago but my current area is getting LTE this summer. Even without LTE, I'm not losing speed and I'm gaining a much faster phone.
