[Q] How to gain root access? (Confused) - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There doesn't seem to be a thread that guides you to obtain only root. All talks of flashing and bootloaders and unlocking has confused me. I only want to gain root access.
I have a US AT&T Atrix that upgraded from the latest Froyo to Gingerbread 4.5.91 through usb cable to the Motorola update software because I wasn't getting it OTA for some reason. (Android Market doesn't detect an update either)
Can anyone help me gain root?

If you were rooted before I believe you can run a script on your computer to give you root access back, though I am trying to find it myself and I've had no luck. I remember reading a few people have done this.
Don't take my word for it though...I could be wrong and I don't want to cause you harm

I did not already have root.

Google How To: Motorola Atrix 4G Root .... Too new to post links. You should be on briefmobile dot com / motorola-atrix-4g-root

Thanks for the reply but it looks like that article was posted back in February. I'm not sure that it is for the newest update.

Use the /preinstall method on brief mobile, that is a PROVEN root method with OTA GB.

Go to Google & search for - oneclick root for (your device here)
Or use the search on xda for how to root your device

Wait oneclickroot caused an extra Superuser icon mess. Hence why people been using Gladroot and Gingerbreak for a much cleaner root.
Are both of those methods not working for AT&T users on 2.3.4?...

So I am to use these instructions from the brief mobile site?
Read the full BriefMobile Motorola Atrix 4G review! The process of rooting your Motorola Atrix 4G has just been changed with the latest updates. We’ve updated the guide below to allow users to root.
How To: Motorola Atrix 4G Root
Root method found and executed by Brandon15811, the2dcour, and of course eval-! Make sure to thank them over at the forums.
Prerequisites:
Drivers installed 32-bit or 64-bit
ADB-Fastboot package
Root image (Mirror)
Outline
1. Extract the ADB-Fastboot package and root image to your C:\ Drive under a new folder titled “root”
2. Put your device into Fastboot mode: – Turn off your device. – Hold down the power button and downward volume button until you see “Fastboot” on your screen – Push the upward volume button
3. Open your command prompt (Start >> run “cmd” >> enter)
4.Type the following commands
Code:
cd C:/root
fastboot flash preinstall root.img
fastboot reboot
5. Enable USB debugging (Settings >> Applications >> Debugging)
6. Type the following commands
Code:
adb shell
/preinstall/dosu
7. Type the following commands
Code:
/bin/mount /system -o remount,rw
cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/su
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
PATH=/system/bin:$PATH pm install /preinstall/Superuser.apk
Congratulations! You are rooted!
Click to collapse

yes, use those steps.
When you get to Step 6 ..after entering this command..
/preinstall/dosu
its going to look like you made an error. ignore it and just keeping typing in the commands

When I get to the last step and type to type in the PATH... command I get:
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE]
Is the last step just trying installing Superuser or is there a little more to what it is doing?
EDIT: Thanks for the help. I just got Superuser from the market and all root seems to be fine. Thank again!

How-To [Root][NewLinks] The myTouch 3GS if you updated to Offical 2.2.1 and lost root

First of all i spent 3 days Trying and failing to root the phone and this is my first tutorial if theirs anything i missed please don't hesitate to point it out.
I am Not responsible for any damage, Explosions, Nuclear Holocaust etc. this root method may cause.
Files you will need below:
1. Engineering Recovery package: Download
2. SuperOneClick v1.7: from Here Thanks to CLShortFuse
3. A GoldCard: To easily create a Goldcard in a couple of minutes without ADB skills or commands, check this thread
4. Stock firmware: Download
5.the ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.7 : Download
5. a know how of how to use ADB.
- There's a good ADB learning guide here: ADB for noobs
(Thanks steviewevie)
Lets Begin
Step 1: Assuming you already created a gold card place it in your phone and mount it place the Stock Firmware zip and update.zip on root. and unzip Engineering Recovery package and place them in your AndroidSDK in the "Platform-tools" folder.
Step 2: unzip and run SuperOneClick v1.7 and make sure your phone is connected via USB with USB Debugging ON. Now press Shell Root and let it run you should get a success pop up.
Step 3: Run ADB and type the following:
adb devices
you should get your devices serial
adb push flash_image /data/local
adb push mtd0.img /data/local
adb shell
cd /data/local
chmod 04755 *
/data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/mtd0.img
Step 4: Once complete, power off the TMobile myTouch Slide
Step 5: Hold the Volume Down button while powering on until the device is in bootloader mode.
Step 6: After a minute or so, the device will prompt to see if you want to run the update. Press the Volume Up button to accept & apply the update.
NOTE: (IF YOU GET A ERROR MSG THAT THE ZIP VERSION IS OLDER THEN THE THE PHONE VERSION YOUR GOLDCARD WAS MADE WRONG!!)
Step 7: Once the device is finished applying the update, it will ask you to reboot. DON'T reboot the device & press the Volume Down button to tell the device not to.
Step 8: Back at the bootloader menu, use Volume Down to highlight Recovery and press the Power button to boot into the recovery.
Step 9: Once in the recovery, you will see a device with a triangle. Press Volume Up & the Power button.
Step 10: Use the Volume Down button to highlight Apply update.zip & press the Power button to select this.
Final Step: After a moment, the TMobile myTouch Slide will boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
After that you can now pull battery and insert your main memory card with your desired ROM and Radio Update if you wish and boot into recovery and Happy
Flashing
Enjoy!!
This is how I achieved root! I guess great minds think alike. I was just about to post too, but you beat me to the punch. See the minute I realized with SuperOneClick I could achieve Shell root I could push mtd0.img and flash and then flash the engineering build but you beat me to it! I was thinking about it all day during class and it worked but kudos to you!

But, something of note, this will NOT allow you to gain S-OFF. Once you update to stock OTA you will permanently lose the ability to S-OFF unless you have your device replaced by T-Mobile.
Following your instructions and finally I find myself with RC4 again. Thanks a bunch for helping me out.
Yeah nbetcher is right, stuck on HBOOT 1.0 Thanks for the heads up NB

Does rooting this way effectively get rid of the actual official 2.2.1?
or is the esprimg that of 2.2.1 or the old 2.1?

Thanks much for this. Back to ArayrayMod Revamped...woot!!!
I love messing with stuff so this was fun.
worked great. thanks!
When I get to step 2 and type in
"#cd /data/local
#chmod 04755 *
#/data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/mtd0.img"
should it be repeating what I type? Cause when I reboot, it checks ESPRIMG then says main version is older, but I know I made my goldcard correctly.
maybe my fault
This method worked great, my only problem is that when using rom manager, reboot into recovery doesnt work. It goes to stock recovery but with a question mark. I placed the update.zip on my sdcard and it wont read it pressing volume up and power. I was able to flash cm7, and google apps, but now cant get back into recovery. Not sure what I did in error. I should mention that, trying to stop my wifes complaining about the stock rom, I updated to froyo. I'm familiar with all the tinkering with these phones, I have a G2 rooted, s-off, with CM7 on it. I just don't know about the slide. Any help would be appreciated. Thx in advance.

OK, thats what I figured. Thanks alot!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, if anything. There's a few things that I might not have right:
1: I'm supposed to cd\ to whatever folder I have the Engineering Recovery package saved to, right?
2: I know when I type adb shell, I should get "#" as a response to my input. So should my prompt look like this:
adb shell
# #cd /data/local
# #chmod 04755 *
# #/data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/mtd0.img
or like this:
adb shell
# cd /data/local
# chmod 04755 *
# /data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/mtd0.img
Ok, just want to make sure I got everything here: basically, once you're rooted with this method, you can go back to factory condition by placing the same esprimg.zip from S-Off troubleshoot section and then re-update with HTC Sync, right?

Did you try both? From my experience with command line stuff, the second looks correct. But, someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

It seems to me like it would - wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
I did try both. It just repeats it when I hit enter. So I turn my phone off, hold vol down + power, let esprimg load, then it says "Main version is older! Do you want to restart?" I choose no, try to apply update.zip, then it says sig verification failed, so i reboot. Not sure what to do

Problem rooting Fascinate

Im using this method...
DLed the drivers and files needed already..
After a connect phone and turn on USB debuging and run CMD
cd C:\FascinateRoot_v02
adb devices
It will state
"List of devices attached
I500******* device"
If you dont see this you are not connected
adb push rage.bin /data/local/tmp/rage.bin
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 0755 rage.bin
This step is important. After you type the next command there will be a pause and you will have to wait until you are kicked out of adb shell. It is important you do not touch your phone or type anything in the command window. If you do don't worry, nothing bad will happen you will most likely have to pull your battery and try to run the command again. If your phone doesn't lock up you can probably unplug it and plug it back in and start back at "adb shell"
./rage.bin
After several seconds the $ prompt will come back
After another 20 seconds or so you will be kicked back to the C:\FascinateRoot_v02 prompt.
adb devices
If your device is still connected proceed,if not give it a min or to and type adb devices again. if the phone is locked up after a couple mins battery pull and start over.
adb shell
You should now be at a # prompt
This mean you have achieved temporary root on the device.
exit
You should now be at the C:\rootfiles prompt again
Type the following commands:
adb push su /sdcard/su
adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
adb shell
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
cd /system/xbin
cat /sdcard/su > ./su
cat /sdcard/busybox > ./busybox
chmod 4755 su
chmod 4755 busybox
exit
You should be back at the C:\FascinateRoot_v02 prompt
adb install Superuser.apk
It will now install the Superuser.apk this may take some time while it installs when it is over it will say:
Success-after you see Success hit Ctrl-C Then reset your device
The problem i have is that ADB doesnt recognize my device
tryd different "one click" attempts for it also and same thing
"Device not connected or found or seen"
What can i do?
Help pls
Thnx in Advance

Hm. Damn. Well, you're on stock Eclair, but it should still be working. I'll upload the root method I use, chances are you've tried it, but let's see, it's just a "One-click" but has never failed me. Wait, after re-reading your OP, I think I see your problem. Your One-Click, I think, is outdated. Mine does not have all of this extra crap and directions yours seems to. Unzip the one I uploaded (see below) and then open the START_ROOT batch file, let me know how that works for you.

You know, also, if you wanted...You could Odin the stock EB01 with the .pit file, it'd upgrade you to EB01, as well as give you root. Just a thought, if the above did not help.

but ill report back tomorrow thnx for the help
Isn't using SuperOneClick a whole lot easier? You just plug it in, press root, and wait a couple minutes...just my $0.02
Nemesis2All has a superuser root package zip.file that you can flash from cwm recovery. Just Odin cwm red recovery all 3/30 Fix.tar file and then flash root package zip.file via cwm recovery and you're rooted. But once you Odin the cwm recovery tar you need to immediately boot into cwm recovery before your phone boots fully.

@JEEZYMT3G read my comment about the the flashable root.zip package from Nemesis2All. It's the most reliable way to root. You don't even have to mount your phone. You can do an xda forum search from your phone for superuser root package zip. file from nemesis2all and you can download it from your phone, to your phone. Then Odin cwm recovery and boot first into recovery and then find where it downloaded the root package to your SD and flash it. You're rooted.

You don't actually need a USB connection to root. Download "dropbox" (free from market). Also download dropbox on your computer. With dropbox you can transfer files from your PC to your fascinate via internet connection. Download "New superuser root package your fascinate" from Nemesis2All. (Do an XDA forum search for this) When you have done this call me.

[Unlock] Bootloader unlock - Updated November 26th 2012

Please see this safer/easier/faster method instead of using the one below http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36976137#post36976137
Original guide provided below for historial purposesonly, seriously use hte one above:
Please refrain from repackaging, or rehosting my materials, ask prior to deciding to.
If this guide fails, or the auto script (which I will not recommend you use) fails, please do a factory reset before attempting again.
If you appreciate this, please make sure you check out my original article on the AndroidPolice. Without the support of AP, I wouldn't spend nearly as much time doing this. To the bloggers who will chose to link to a forum post, rather than the original post on a better blog, you suck.

Donations for new test devices can be made at the paypal link to the left. I reserve the right to send leftover funds to whatever charities I feel like. Generally I choose Boys and Girls club of america, sometimes I choose seasonal charity, or a medical related one.
Known Problems:
Adb server is out of date
Uninstall HTC Sync, Samsung Kies, etc any software that talks to the phone.
If you get stuck, please immediately find someone in our chat that knows what they are doing. It is very easy to brick your phone if you follow these directions incorrectly, or if a problem arises!

Warning: This is semi complicated, and is known to ruin phones if done incorrectly. Proceed at your own risk
Needed:
1gb free space on the phone.
Working adb, must support the adb restore feature (ICS and up!)
Downloads:
backup.ab (300mb) mirrors: http://d-h.st/tau - http://depositfiles.com/files/9c61r4lgo - http://www.filefactory.com/file/2va8yp2i1h99/n/backup.ab
DNA_TeamAndIRC mirrors - http://d-h.st/D4r - http://www.putlocker.com/file/F357F205F5235B3D - http://rapidgator.net/file/59342799/DNA_TeamAndIRC.zip.html
Unzip DNA_TeamAndIRC, put runme.sh, CIDGen.apk and backup.ab into the directory where adb is (or anywhere if you have your paths setup right).
Please Check the readme.txt before continuing!
Code:
adb install CIDGen.apk
Run the CIDGen app on your phone, enter the last digit of your IMEI (NOT YOUR MEID) and press generate. Then confirm the generated file exists.
Code:
adb shell ls -l /sdcard/CIDBLOCK.img
If CIDBLOCK.img does not exist, run the app and try again. Do not proceed without generating a CIDBLOCK.img, it is needed to repair the phone and unlock.
Once you have CIDBLOCK.img on your sdcard, open two terminals (command prompts) and continue
In the first terminal/cmd prompt run these commands:
Code:
adb push runme.sh /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/runme.sh
adb shell /data/local/tmp/runme.sh
runme.sh will continue to loop and spit out No such file or link failed errors, just leave it running for now.
In the other terminal/cmd prompt run this commands:
Code:
adb restore backup.ab
Then allow the restore on your phone. Once the process is finished, you can go back to the looping terminal and stop it with control + c, or close the terminal
At this point, do not continue unless you are certain you can do this. Past this point, is where people can brick if they do not follow the directions correctly. If you run into a problem, find someone to help you. Do NOT power your phone off or reboot it. Leave it charging and find someone.
Code:
adb shell rm /data/data/com.htc.usage/files/exploit/*
adb shell mv /data/DxDrm /data/DxDrm_org
adb shell mkdir /data/DxDrm
adb shell ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /data/DxDrm/DxSecureDB
adb reboot
Once the phone is rebooted, open two terminals and repeat the restore exploit:
In the first one:
Code:
adb shell /data/local/tmp/runme.sh
This process will also loop forever and give out lots of "No such file" or "link failed" errors - again, just leave it running.
In the second terminal, restore the backup again:
Code:
adb restore backup.ab
After the restore is done, we will undo the DxDrm symlink attack and write the new CIDBLOCK.img:
Code:
adb shell mv /data/DxDrm /data/DxDrm_trash
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/CIDBLOCK.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
If this returns an "out of space error" come to our chat, and find either jcase or beaups. Do not reboot. Do not continue.
Code:
adb reboot
After reboot, you can go to http://HTCDev.com, and unlock through their official process. Choose the "All other supported models" option when selecting your phone.
Cheers!

I just did it, and it's really not that hard, took maybe 10 minutes, just copy and paste the commands and you should be good :good:
So I was able to unlock with this method via HTCDev, I installed TWRP and the insecure kernel, but my SuperSU will not work after I flashed the file in recovery. None of my apps can get root access, and I cannot update the superuser binary via SuperSU. What's going on here?

[Root] RockMyMoto (Yes, even the first OTA)

This will void your warranty, like all root exploits. Use this at your own risk. Do not take OTAs on rooted devices unless you know what you are doing, as it may cause a bootloop or a soft brick.
RockMyMoto is designed for MotoXs that have recieved the Camera update, patching PwnMyMoto. If you are unsure of your firmware, try PwnMyMoto first.
First step is to install Cydia Impactor, by Saurik. http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/ This is required. You will also need adb installed and working, and be comfortable with the command line. Your phone must be on the same network as your PC.
Figure out the ip address of your phone:
adb shell getprop dhcp.wlan0.ipaddress
Click to collapse
unzip RockMyMoto-{version}.zip and push the exploit and su to /sdcard/:
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push RockMyMoto.jar /sdcard/
Click to collapse
Run Impactor and select "# start telnetd as system on port 2222", then hit start.
Once the process is complete, run telnet:
telnet {your phone's ipaddress} 2222
Click to collapse
Run the exploit through telnet
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Click to collapse
The exploit will tell you to use adb to reboot:
adb reboot
Click to collapse
Run the exploit through telnet for the second time, it will reboot on it's own:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Click to collapse
Run the exploit through telnet for the third time, it will not reboot:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Click to collapse
Wait 0-60 seconds, for su to install, then install SuperSu from the market.
Enjoy!
Known issues:
If you have AP isolation mode enabled in your AP (aka WiFi router) you won't be able to connect to your phone via telnet, disable isolation.
Windows users having trouble see here
I confirm that this does work on the Droid Maxx on the new OTA update !!!
Thanks JCASE Much Appreciated !!!
Thank you!
Looks like I'm going to be at a loss. I never learned how to use adb :/
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This might a dumb question, but why don't we just release a rooted OTA update?
Quick question about this exploit. I know that the issue with the first two earlier methods is that everything is still signature checked, which prevents Custom ROM/Kernel flashing, as well as Custom Recoveries.
Does this exploit bypass the signature check to allow for custom recovery, or not just yet?
PS: Your skills are godlike. A million thanks for your root hacks!

youve almost got a triple negitive going on there, so to clarify, you are rooted, with write protection disabled (ie cant make lasting changes to /system) and you still have stock recovery. is that right?
I am getting link failed file exists when attempting to start telnet.
Forget all that, I was using the wrong port, now the process beings to start the telnet process hangs at waiting for completion then goes back to the impactor main menu, the telnet connection is not successful after that.
I am using the latest soak test update, Am I wrong thinking that this method works with that update?

Yup sorry if it was confusing.
Ok I think I figured it out my phone is already rooted even after a factory reset. I used voodoo when I took the update and everything worked but I had no touchless controls so I did a factory reset after installing stock recovery. I must have had the protected su on the phone still and it stayed unless jcase has a work around for this I am stuck until the new fxz comes out. Then I can completely wipe su out and I will be able to start all over. It really is not that big of a deal I can use almost everything with just root even xpsosed setting work. It would appear the exploit does not allow you to run it if you have root it must verify you do and thinks all is well so it never installs the writer protection off and replaces the stock recovery. My stupid mistake for trying to short cut this I should have just did an fxz took the update and used this method.
Aaaaaaaaand back to rooted. JCASE you are the man!!
If anyone has questions on what to do ask away. it was very simple
I've never used adb before in my life. Would you recommend me trying it lol. Meaning would it be easy for a first timer.

Looks like someone has. Head over to towelroot.com and download their tr.apk. I can confirm it rooted my Boost LG Volt. Some issues with getting Superuser.apk or SuperSU.apk to work, though.
I too agree tr.apk will allow root. It does not push buysbox so just grab that and you fav su apk and get rid of those damn sd card restrictions in 4.4?

Another thread on the androidforums.com saya installing the SuperSU apk from the xda-developers thread worked fine...not sure if it is the lg f90 or volt it worked on...Another on the same thread said it didn't work for them...They were wondering if it was Virgin Mobile causing the issue...
