Question - Tethering. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a stupid question about tethering... I have always used wireless tether for root from the market, but I have Ken's Alien rom, and im wondering since it has tethering, can I just use the mobile hotpot feature without fear of AT&T finding out and charging me?

How easy is this question? Doesn't anyone know haha
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

Well i have read then at&t can generally find out but it is easier to be caught with an iphone I should know because I used to have an iphone 4 flash a c a tricks I say using an app which state that I can hide tethering.
Other ways of hiding your tethering include not using it for a long session
Thought I was caught using tethering on the iphone I still haven't been notified on my atrix
But the common consensus is that there is no real way to hide your tethering from at&t unless they really have a reason to look into your account

Use Barnacle.............it works fine and is safer than using the APN for tethering.
http://szym.net/barnacle/
<edit> I prefer WiFi Tether, but it doesn't appear to work with 2.3.4............at least not for me.
<edit 2> Just realized WiFi Tether has been updated: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list.
This works with me now. You will get an access control error, but ignore that and you will be fine. Verified working on my laptop here at work. Got 3.5Mbps down and 1Mbps up which is usual dl/ul speed for me at work.

Yeah, wifi tether for root is working flawlessly, but it would be nice to just use mobile hotspot from the phone haha.

Mobile hotspot worked for me. I did the sqlite edit and clicked on the mobile hotspot app and played around with netflix on my 3DS. I had at&t send me a text of my data usage and it still says unlimited. I would imagine if it didn't work they would have changed me over to a 4gb plan.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

I did the entitlement check change and use the mobile hotspot which works great. Haven't had at&t say anything to me even when I used custom apn method before.

[Q] How can I tether with networks other than AT&T

Hey guys,
Now before everyone chimes in with "Barnacle", "Wireless Tether from Google Code" or "just add a custom APN"... I have tried all of these methods including using Root Explorer and SQL Lite to edit the APNs and none of them will enable me to tether over wifi. I'm on the latest version of Ginger Blur and using the Atrix in Australia on the Telstra Next G network.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
Krisbo
Under the .db file, ensure that where it says default, add tether after it (default, tether) make sure its the telstra line though. Thats all i did to mine from memory. Also ensure airplane mode is on

I use the WIRED tether from google code, works like a dream. Wired tether doesn't eat your battery and helps with heat since you wont be using wifi too.

No real need for wired tether as I'm wanting to tether with my iPad.

Tried this, didn't work. This is probably going to be a deal breaker for me .
Bump?
Looks like I'll be going back to the Inspire, I need to be able to tether for my iPad 2.

Tether question?

Is there a way to get 4g on tether.
I am rooted

Unfortunately for now the only way that I have found is to pay for the Sprint Mobile Hotspot. I was Fortunate enough to have been Grand Fathered into Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data because I have been a customer since 1997 and was not to thrilled when I was told it was going down to 5GB per month. I called Sprint, ended up speaking with a Retentions Manager (Politely) and she took care of me and kept me at Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data. I was really upset and let it be known I would take my 3 lines to Verizon.
I had it for FREE on my OG EVO but needed Mobile Hotspot when I moved over to the Photon.
mine works through open garden tether.
Perroype3 if your phone os rooted. You can use free tether hotspot wifi from your phone to laptop. Go head search wifi tether app from market. Even with 3G or 4G
Good luck

You're asking about a wired tether option?
Edit...

Give that a shot. I haven't tried it personally, so let me know if it works for you. Should, if not, I can link you to a couple other free ones I've found.

unreliable tethering

my tethering seems very unreliable. im using the latest wifi tether apk but thats irelevant as i have used many versions but the problems persist. allow me to explain, im in no way new to android nor tethering. i have followed all the steps to get 4g tethering speeds ( toggle data off, disable 4g re enable and so on) the thing is i cant get a stable connection from my laptop or my xoom for more than 20 mins. the connection either goes idle or the phone just restarts or i simply get disconnected from it. im just wondering whether it' s just me or whether this a common problem among photon users. many thanks and great forum.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I believe the 4G on your phone becomes idle. Just a guess.
I have heard this happens to other Photon users as well. Not sure what the cause of it is or the fix. I'm going to try some things out when I get time and see what mine does. I've never tried to tether for that long of time before. Will post back if I find out anything new.
**I can only test 3G. No 4G in my area.
Are you rooted or using a rom?
**Ignore this (my) post...had something but changed my mind***
thanks. yes rooted & stock

i can torrent nd get bout 10+ mbps download running through tether for 3 hours no problem. could even get on gears of war on my xbox while tethering no lag no problem
favorite tethering app- open garden tethering (easy and you can lower the transmit power for huge battery life increase, i keep mine on the lowest available) but wifi tether if i need specific settings

It should be the same as with the previous data plan. Im sure the workarounds still work. Try this app, I've been using it without issues: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ..
I'm about to try the wifi tether app, though I would make note to use https sites and avoid plain http as much as possible.
Not working for me my device doesn't show up

From what I remembered the last time I used WiFi tether apps I couldn't access secured sites. But this was about a year ago.

this would defeat my doubt about https (secure sites) but why do you say avoid plain http? T-mobile being able to detect if you are tethering where secure sites would be protected and no one can tell what you are doing?

Now I'm confused, works or no works lol. Remember this is with the new unlimited data plan and using whatever hacks (most likely hasoons) available.
On another note have you guys tried the old original WiFi tether app from google.code something. I Haven't been up to date.

Okay to answer all your questions.
1. It can access all sites.
2. Yes tmo apparently detect unpaid tethering via the pc useragent on http sites but since they pry into https as it is a secure protocol, they can't detect those but I just used all the various protocols without any issues.
3. Yes it works via the wifi tether app from the play store, it does work via the default tether app on some devices but the newer devices they set it to check your data plan for hotspot, but the wifi tether app gets around that and works fine and no I didn't modify anything, I'm on the stock apn, etc.
Yes I do have the true unlimited plan as well.

Actually everyone is doing crazy downloading, the thing about the wifi tether third party app is that it shows your device as being the user of the data and not it being tethered the way the on board hot spot option would, that's why I opt for the third party app than just a fix, that way they can't block your tethering since it's your device showing up on the network and not a pc, imo.

[SOLVED] Wi-fi tethering

Quick question, does anyone know of a wi-fi tethering app for a rooted L9? I can't seem to get past T-Mobile's block.

Re: Wi-fi tethering
Fox-fi works great. A little tip though, if you use Chrome as a browser on your laptop or whatever you'll still get service messages and blocks use safari or Firefox if you're tethering. This may not be the case for everyone but that was the case for me when I was tethered on my mac book.
I also got the paid version of foxfi don't know if that matters or not.

what i did for quite a while was, i got foxfi, and i purchased the key. (it was a lot cheaper when paid key first came out).
the biggest thing you need to remember is, with a tablet, t mobile doesn't detect it. on a laptop, use chrome, and download the "user agent switcher" extension for it. use an Android browser, and you can slip past the guards.
Fox-Fi is a excellent choice, i have used it non stop with no interuptions
