so I have the new OTA Gingerbread, and then i rooted using the preinstall method. Yet every time I search in "settings-about phone" for the new Android Market, nothing comes up. I've though of downloading it, but will that brick my phone, or erase root? How do I do it if it won't?

So a long time ago I rooted my cousins phone and installed gingerblur. And haven't touched the phone sense. Now he wanted to go to gingerbread and I borked his phone. It's working again but am on old 1.26 firmware stock. I've been reading a lot all day and I'm just confused flabbergasted I am plain lost this is way harder then my HTC and Samsung. Well basically could someone tell me or link me to the easiest fastest way to get to gingerbread?
Use the sticky in development to download the 1.8.3 firmware. Use RSD to flash to that. Make sure it is the full and not the service. Root the phone then with gingerbreak. After that there is a sticky in Dev called pudding. Flash that using RSD. Your phone will be unlocked .Then you can flash any rom.

First do the ota updates to 1.83 then root it using gingerbreak. Next:
1. Unlock your bootloader here:http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
2. instal cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
2a. MAKE SURE YOU USE THIS CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=641508&d=1309404399
3. Mount your phone and put whatever rom you choose that can be installed through .zip on the sd card i suggest kens :http://bandbinnovations.com/xda/gingerbread/Gingerbread-Atrix-Beta-4-5.zip
4. boot into cwm by holding volume down button while powering on and then scroll through until you see android recovery on your phone right under where it says unlocked.once boote...
5. choose instal zip and go to where you saved it
6. install the zip
7. do not reboot yet.
8. clear cache and dalvik(found in advanced) and finally do a wipe data restore.
9. reboot!
Hope this helps!
Great thanks guys I got his phone up and running.

i made a video in case you run into this issue again
Ok guys so heres the story, I recently smashed my nexus one in the door of my car. It was a very sad affair! Needless to say it was fully rooted, bootloader unlocked, etc. So when I went to the att store I pick up the atrix really like the hardware HATE the motoblur. So I finally got it rooted after a little trouble. Superuser works and I used rommanager to flash the atrix 4g recovery. And now I want to flash the CM7 beta to it but when i try to go into the recovery it goes to this
"failed boot 2"
"Starting RSD Mode"
and it will just sit there forever. What am I missing? I just want vanilla android on this sexy hardware!
thanks in advance gotwake
Need to unlock your bootloader first.
All the info is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
Yep, unlock bootloader, no more no less. Also, if you performed an OTA update to 2.3.4 or it came with 2.3.4 (or whatever gingerbread is, i'm new too) then please don't flash anything lower than that or else you'll get a hard brick!
Male sure you "freeze" and not uninstall the Motoblur stuff, since 9 times out of 10 people are scrambling back for stuff they deleted that was stock for whatever reason a lot around here...

Comming from the N1 I know what vanilla android is and I love it.
When I run the auto scrpit it gets to the generating ID: and then says fastboot is not a recongise command
and quits?
what could be the problem. And yes i do have root

Hi....
Rooted my phone. Stock 2.3.4. Installed Rom Toolkit Pro. Froze some apps I thought I didnt need and I guess that included the contacts.apk and odex. Thought I had found them and installed them in the system/app but I was wrong. Went back into toolkit and saw a bunch of new system apps in Spanish and some other things in odd code. Decided to do a factory reset which I am now realizing was a bad idea. Now I boot the phone and all is pretty normal until I get to Add Accounts in the set up. Com.motorola.setup keeps fcing and i cant get past it. I jist need my phone back to functioning order. I cant use the market bit can look and replying to INcoming texts. My bf bought me this phone and he os ready to rip my head off. Any any help is appreciated.
More info
I can interact with the phone via voice command/search but have no access to apps or launcher. At this rate I dont care aboit root or anything...would downloading a copy of a stock rom and doing install update by sd calrd via android recovery work?
If your bootloader is locked install bootstrap recovery then in bootstrap recovery format system, data and cache then boot the phone into rsd lite protocol and flash one of the sbf's through rsd lite to return to stock. You will loose root but thats easy enough to get back.
Flashing a stock rom through bootstrap should also do the trick just remember to format the system data and cache partitions before flashing for best results.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
Not sure how to do that if I cant interact with my launcher, homescreen, etc. Thanks for the add'l info.
Then you may have to unlock your bootloader and do it through cwm.

...just realized what you were trying to explain (I think). Found the Sprint 2.3.4 sbf. Basically install that through RDSLite on my computer, and actually need very little interaction with the phone's home screen?

Yes. It will rewrite all the system files to the phone.

Flashed stock sbf. Still had the same exact problem, but now had an unrooted phone. Reflashed sbf. Did an Android Recovery factory reset. Wiped partition 3 times (don't know if really necessary but I heard three's the number). Reboot phone. Profit. :good: Just in case anyone is stuck with the whole com.motorola.setup fcs...
My participation in this forum saved my ars on some weird behavior my rooted x2 had been exhibiting lately. update: Nandroid backup saved me. Now, after a few days my phone is bugging me to OTA upgrade to 2.3.4. I see that this gingerbread has considerable benefit on ye ole ROM front.
Can someone help me out with a step-by-step upgrade on my rooted device? Do I need to unroot first? I have to admit to an unroot prior to my problems. Something with an app I need to get upgrade. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you want to apply the ota, grab ota rootkeeper from the market. Open the app, save root, then go to town updating. No need to unroot. Once updated, open the app again and hit restore root, as the ota will remove root.
That's pretty much it. As it stands that is the only way to get root on the latest ota so if for some reason you run into an issue and lose root, you will have to sbf back to 2.3.4.

Cant find pete root tools but installed rom manager and rootkeeper. My root is intact and stable...i just cant get it to frickin' update from 2.3.3 .

For updating to the latest release you can't have changed any of the system files (ie frozen), and if you are rooted it's best to do a temp unroot (with a Voodoo backup of course) and make sure you boot into the Stock Recovery and attempt to flash that way. Should go without saying that you have to be on the stock rom.

Slim, i have ignored the OTA upgrade notification for 9 months. If its not broken, dont fix it theory. I had tweaked the phone with root only so that i could barnacle my tablet to the internet. Since i just saw how easily i recovered my phone back to my last nandroid backup, i figured i would try to upgrade and ROM this thing as it seems ive gotten it this far. Can someone link me to an easy to follow, step by step on "flashing stock recovery mode"? I can unfreeze programs with titanium backup and then unroot with ota rootkeeper. Just lrt me know how to stock recover, ie: phone plugged in? Unzipped file locations? External or internal sd card? I appreciate the help.
if update is failing
try unrooting with rootkeeper (keeps backup) like slimman suggested
if that doesn't work it's time to flash 2.3.4 sbf

a little surprised, that you made it 9 months and phone didn't try to install overnight after several notices
I know that has happened with other moto phones like D2 and D2G
Guys root has nothing to do with not being able to receive ota.
Nothing.
Lol
It sounds to me like you need to sbf back 2.3.4
Make sure your phone is fully charged.
Do you have usb debugging enabled?
Forget about guessing games, sbf back to 2.3.4.
Root your phone via Pete's. Do not use zerg.
Install recovery
Install superuser etc. If you feel the need but Pete's su. Works fine.
Install voodoo rootkeeper.
Make the back up.
Again with these phones root has NOTHING to do with receiving or not receiving ota.
If your ota is borked there's somthing else going on. You must have removed (bad idea) or froze something
Just sbf and follow my instructions again.
Hope that helps.
As I said in my guide, all updates were done with root, and I went from2.3.3>2.3.4>2.3.5
All rooted each time all retained root via rootkeeper.
Hope that helps

At least that is what other user have claimed of other moto phones

I'm about to install Avast Anti-Theft on my phone. I went to the Avast app, went through the process of creating the update.zip folder that needs to be installed via recovery because of the secure NAND filesystem, and I'm about to install it.
I went into TWRP, pressed Install, selected update.zip, and I'm ready to install it.
I got TWRP's message that installing incompatible software might brick my phone. I know that this message displays for everything, but this stage in the rooting process wasn't explained to me fully. This feature only installs (i.e. forces the system to accept the installation of) software, so I'm good using this method to install the zip archive, correct?

The worse that could happen is your ROM won't boot but your phone still will. S-on makes it to where what we flash can't access what would completely screw our phones up. Its a gift and a curse lol

I see. So as long as the S flag is on, it's impossible to truly brick your phone?
