[Q] Rooted without making a note of my original version - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently shifted to an android from an iphone and I am loving the experience. Unfortunately the noob I am, I didnt do my research properly and I went ahead and rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 without making a note of which version my phone was (i.e KE1, KG3 etc etc). Now I want to shift back from Lightning ROM to the original Samsung Sense but I dont know how as I dont know which rom or kernel to download. Could you help me out. I dont have a clue of what needs to be done. Also what do I need to do to un-root my device if I ever require to do so in future.
I would be grateful and in debt to you if you could help me out.

Samsung dont have Sense .
Product code on the box or under the battery may give an indication of original firmware otherwise its guesswork .
Question was phone branded was phone from a particular area .
Stock rom post has many Samsung roms Branded rom post likewise .

Stock rom flashed via Odin will remove root then reset custom rom counter via USB jig .

[Q] Is it necessary to make a backup of a brand new Galaxy s2?

Hey Lads,
i'm about to get my GS2 this week and i'm asking myself if it is necessary to make a backup from the stock-firmware.
I had a galaxy s before and as soon as I got it I went flashing everything I could get my hands on without doing any backaup.
So my question is if I need to make a backup to get back to stock when I for example want to send it back for service or something like that.
Or does flashing a stock-rom, from the forums, have the same effect ?
Well I think this will have the same effect but I'm not 100% sure.
greets
How do you backup the stock firmware?
But I think you can always get the original firmware throug KIES if you don't change the CSC.
Good question... I don't know exactly but I do believe there is a way that uses ADB - something fromh the android develeopment tools.
But I dont know how this is exacly done. Maybe someone could post a link to a how-to ??
Question is ; am I able to do a official update when I actually have a custom rom installed...

NO nor is the phone repaired under warranty .

Post 46 and save an original firmware for your brand .

Hey that is a very nice app. Thanks Bro.
@warranty
I know that there will be no repairs under warranty after flashing a non-stock firmware, thats the reason why I need a "clean" firmware to flash before sending it back.
wouldn't bother trying to back up the stock firmware as this can be re-flashed. just make sure you back up your efs folder!

How to flash Chinese I9100G ??

Hi,
I am sorry for the newbie question.
I just bought a Galaxy S2 GT-9100G here in China.
Only after buying did I realise it is a 'G' model. damn.
anyway - I would like to 'reformat' the device, and place an Israeli ROM on it.
I hope I am using the correct terms.
The reason for this - is that the chinese version comes without Android Market,
and other stuff (and the Israeli one does).
1. Do I need to root the device first before I can change the ROM ?
2. If so - I have seen in this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18099806
that flashing the kernel is the only way to root the device.
I have flashed my brother's Galaxy S2 (I9100) a month ago, using the steps shown here:
http://samsunggalaxys2review.org/root-your-samsung-galaxy-s2-heres-how/
(used OdinDownloader and SuperOneClick). Do I do the same with this device ?
Which file do I supply to Odin ??
3. Is there anyway to flash the Israeli ROM on this device ?
or it won't work, cause Israeli ROM is only for I9100 and my device is I9100G ?
If not - what can I do in order to flash a new ROM with built-in Android Market ?
Thanks to everyone who can help !!!
If u flash the new rom to your phone, it no need to root!
I own a I9100T, I flash it to I9100, it work fine, so I think u can flash it to an Israeli ROM.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192575
In general, be careful about flashing the China phones. It seems they went out of their way to make sure those phones comply with China's government restrictions.
i9100G got KH4 and KI1 rom, u need to donload insecure kernel to root them

Where can I get the KH4 and KI1 insecure kernels ?

So, ghmail, are you saying you have managed to do so yourself ?
Change the ROM on an I9100G to any ROM you want ?
On the topic - how can I backup everything on my device ?
I mean - the bootloader, the ROM and all the other stuff I might mess up if I brick my phone ...
Please remember..u cant flash any I9100 custom rom because its diff between I9100 and I9100G..If u flash it the phone will be semi bricked and u need to flash back to the ori rom of I9100G KH4 or KI1..
China GT-19100G-ZCLC2
Hi People, I am a total novice here. I have been reading your forms for few weeks now, since i Bought this SGS II-I9100G in China [Big Mistake ?? :-( ]
This is my phone :
Model - GT-19100G
Android - V 2.3.6
Baseband - 19100GZCLC2
Kernel - 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Firmware : PDA:LC2 / Phone:LC2 / CSC:LC2 (CHN)
I read thro creezalird pdf user guide and as guessed DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT' dint work with both methods on my phone.
I just want to root the phone so I can install few useful apps, no fancy stuff like flasing or custom rom etc. As you know even google play is blocked. Can someone point me to right link/guide me to do it.
I did read many articles (too many of your forum's) and probably why Im now totally confused. Reason is I do not see anything pointing to ZCLC2. Maybe I am not looking hard enough.
I got it done using superatom's kernel. Now all sw works on chinese phone.
Sent from my rooted GT-I9100G using xda premium

[Q] ICS Update - SGS 2 Rooted 6 months ago

Thanks for reading - I'm a noob.
I came here to learn about rooting devices over 6 months ago and decided to have a go at rooting my SGS 2 to remove the bloatware and speed it up a bit.
Performance has been great - I left the stock firmware because the OS/ROM was not a concern to me. I simply flashed the kernel with CF Root: CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.tar
Now I am led to understand I would need to flash back to my stock kernel to allow the OTA update for ICS - the only issue is I cannot find any available downloads for I9100TDVKF4 - Telstra's stock kernel.
Now I read somewhere a reply to a similar question was "just flash it with a new rom, I dont know why you want to go to stock" - Well I want to update to the official ICS. I was under the impression that would be available a long time ago and never was. I just want to....
Please can anyone help me to point out where I can find that kernel? perhaps there is a different kernel i could use?!
Is there any ICS firmware I would be able to download and flash to the ROM using Odin whilst keeping my phone rooted?
I found this place really helpful in how to root and now I just hope someone can help me get onto ICS!
Cheers

No only custom rooted firmware .
Try Checkfus for your stock firmware download and flash via Odin .
Dont confuse yourself with kernels without understanding .
ICS on Checkfus or Kies for your phone install otherwise wait until your provider releases .
or flash your original saved firmware that will overwrite root .
jje
Thanks for taking the time to reply mate....
Dont confuse yourself with kernels without understanding - dont worry ive been trying not to but it seems thats the only thing i changed on my phone when i rooted it so i was lead to believe i needed to change that back...
My provider has just released new version of ICS but i cant actually install it once ive downloaded it over the air it only gets to 8% then reboots itself and i believe thats because the phone is rooted...
or flash your original saved firmware that will overwrite root - I dont know if i backed it up correctly on the guide i was using!!! The only thing i backed up was the apps using titanium backup so now i feel im stuck!
Use check fus down loader and get the official ics ROM.
It's under i9100t Australia/telestra
Problem solved.

Noob Questions Ahoy!

Hi there guys I really need educating. I come from a Samsung Galaxy S to a Samsung Galaxy S 3. I know all about firmware flashing, kernels n stuff on the original Sammy G, but haven't a clue on the Samsung Galaxy S 3.
I have managed to root the bad boy (go me!) but am unsure how to carrier unlock and to flash the latest firmware. The Sammy G was carrier unlocked but my Sammy G S3 is locked to Vodafone
Can anyone point me to the files and maybe some guides so that I can procede? Also what is this business about a flash counter? I want to be able to return to original firmware if it all goes belly up! How do I backup my original firmware?
Many Thanks In Advance
Doozy,
P.S.
Who is the best Dev to follow for A) Rom and B) Kernel? I followed CyanogenMod on the Sammy G but the CM9 nightlies fpr the Samsung Galaxy S 3 seem a little immature for me at the moment.
Cheers once again
I think you don't have to backup your original firmware because you can download the stock firmwares again later, but you can do a nandroid backup (i never did this^^)
If something goes wrong, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
About unlocking i don't know, but i think the lock will be gone if you flash any rom (but can't give you warranty, since my phone was unlocked)
You can reset the flash counter, it's called triangle away : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Im not able to say, whick rom / kernel is best, but why don't you check this thread and try some roms? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674286
The first CM9 releases had many bugs, but they seem to be ready for all day use now (but i missed the Sammy Camera App, which is very nice )
Thank You very much for taking the time to respond I will take a look at those links.
Thanks Very Much,
Doozy

and also wen i switch on my mobile it shows a triangle sign below with the samsung symbol..!
so plzz help me out to flash back the stock rom..!
thnxx..!
It shouldn't matter which stock rom you flash, if it were me I'd be flashing a rom released by the carrier your currently using as the modem in it should give you good connectivity.
Nobody's going to give you links (they'd better not) when all you need to do is go to Samfirmware & spend two minutes or less using the pulldown boxes to find the rom you need. How to flash the rom ? Search. This has been covered so many times here over the past two years it ain't funny.
If you've got the warning triangle then someone has flashed non stock firmware on it at some stage. No need to worry about it unless you ever need to make a warranty claim, because removing it will involve rooting the phone (How ? Search).

so it does not matter about the contry wch we bought we can just flash a rom from samfirmware and my phone is rooted though..! and its showing triangle symbol.! so no need to worry about it while flashing my stock rom right ?
You should be able to use any stock rom from any carrier/country just fine, but as I mentioned, if it were me, I'd be flashing a stock rom released by my carrier for the reason mentioned.
If you flash stock you'll lose root, if you want it back, you'll need to re-root your phone (How ? Again, search). As mentioned, no need to worry about the triangle unless you'd need to send the phone to a service centre for a warranty claim (tho you can remove it with Triangle Away if you re-root your phone).
