I just acquired a Droid Eris from my buddy of mine, when you turn it on it just stays at the screen with the 3 androids on skateboard(if I turn it on with it plugged into usb It makes the connection noise though). I can Also get into hboot and recovery but no matter what I do it will not install anything, everything just fails. Also its say its S-ON. Any help would be great, thanks.

Well, you didn't really say what "everything just fails" means. How about giving us an error message?
While you are at it, what version of recovery is on the phone - Amon_RA v1.6.2, or some version of Clockwork?.
Same deal for the bootloader - how about an exact version number - 1.49.0000, 1.47.0000, or other?
Because your phone is already "soft-bricked", and you got it for free, and because your recovery boots up, you can try flashing "ErisMTDNuke_v0.9.zip". You can find it at this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11651122&postcount=21
It has an an assert() in it that tries to block it from running on ClockworkMod, but depending on what version of recovery you have, that may not matter. Let me know if you get any errors running it. If it runs, you should be back in business; it leaves the /system, /data, and "boot" partitions of the ROM blank, so you will need to flash a ROM afterwards. Also, if you have ClockworkMod recovery on the phone, you should consider getting it off of there, and putting one of the two Amon_RA recovery variants on there.
You might find the entire thread that contains the above post very useful, as it describes a method for installing the S-OFF bootloader using the "SoSickWiTiT" rooting method, as well as other tricks such as using fastboot to soft-load recoveries without writing them to flash; that full thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11652502
Please provide full details on what works / doesn't work, particularly with "ErisMTDNuke_v0.9.zip" - it has only been used on 3 phones so far (worked on all three, though).
cheers

I dont think the phones been rooted(my friend has no idea what that even is). It has hboot 1.49.0000, and the recovery is not a custom one, its Android recovery 2e. If I try to Install an update through recovery its says installation aborted. Also if I use pb00img.zip it loads in hboot but says previous version is older and to reboot.

OK, that is completely different. It is impossible to load a dev ROM using the stock recovery <2e>
Did you try the "wipe data/factory reset procedure" of the recovery menu, or have you already done that and then the phone hangs at the three droids?
bftb0
If the stock ( <2e> ) recovery factory reset does not work, then the method of last resort is going to be to try and get the S-OFF bootloader onto the phone using the "SoSickWiTiT" rooting method.
Generally what happens - if you have corrupted flash memory partitions - is that parts of this install will fail, but getting the engineering bootloader (1.49.2000 S-OFF) onto the phone will succeed - and from there you can leverage the behaviors of the S-OFF bootloader to get a custom recovery running (by using fastboot). Once that happens, you can run the ErisMTDNuke_v0.9.zip flash to erase the /system, /data, and "boot" partitions, so that a subsequent ROM flashing operation will succeed (probably, no guarantees).
The way the "SoSicWiTiT" rooting method works, you run the "Official 2.1 RUU" Utility on the PC - but just before it is ready to start writing to the phone (after it has unpacked all it's temporary files and installed drivers for you), you take the "Root PB00IMG.ZIP" file, rename it to "rom.zip", and replace the "rom.zip" file unpacked in the temporary file area of the RUU. This gets the S-OFF bootloader installed (at a minimum, possibly the whole rom if your problem is not flash memory page corruption).
The thread I mentioned above has more details; ask questions if you don't understand something.
bftb0
PS You should be doing all of these operations with a well charged battery - 100% is a good place to start. Don't let the phone sit in HBOOT or FASTBOOT mode for extended periods of time - the battery will discharge rapidly, even if the phone is plugged in to the charger.
Thank you for the quick and to the point replies, I will try this later tonight and will post and let you know if it works out. I have tried the factory reset and it doesn't work, but hey it was free if I screw it up Its no big issue lol. Im not new to rooting its just I have no experience with this particular phone, so thank you =].

OK. Good luck.
The Root PB00IMG.ZIP and the "Official 2.1 RUU" can be found here:
Consolidated HTC RUU, Leak, and OTA Downloads
Amon_RA's original (v1.6.2) recovery is located here
If you don't have a version of fastboot on your PC/workstation already, you can find different platform versions of it a short distance down the HTC's developer page for the ADP.
If you can get the S-OFF bootloader onto the phone, then you can flash Amon_RA's recovery from the PC with a single command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img
If you don't already have USB drivers installed on your PC, the RUU utility should be able to do it for you automatically (although ymmv depending on your Xp/Vista/Win7/x32/x64 variety).
Let me know how things go.
bftb0
PS It is worth repeating - make sure your phone is well charged when you are doing any flashing.
Yeah I know fastboot like the back of my hand(g1 and other phones that I love dearly but no longer have), im giving this a shot right now, thank bud.

Standing by.
No matter what the official 2.1 RUU gives me a bootloader mismatch error 140 with either the actual rom.zip or the root rom renamed to rom.zip and placed in the temp folder, let me try some more things. Edit RUU says Im going from 2.37.605.4 to 2.36.605.1. Ok so this leads me to believe it has the 4th OTA on it right?
PS -
I might have mentioned it in that other thread, but anyway: the RUU utility will get the phone to cooperate if the phone is put into fastboot mode (or RUU mode). Normally it is expected that the phone will be booted normally when you start up the RUU... but that (obviously) isn't an option for a soft-bricked phone.
cheers

Rats. Does that happen immediately after the RUU starts up, or only when you tell it to begin the flashing operation?
Here's another wild straw to grasp at.
If you plug the phone into your PC, and then cold-start it (normal boot), do you hear 2 USB sequences at about 5 and 9 seconds, respectively? If the kernel is alive, but looping on something.... and the prior user had USB debugging enabled, and it's a 2.1 ROM, we can probably still root it by hand across ADB.
does "adb devices" give you anything 15 or more seconds after boot-up, or does your (Windows) device manager indicate a "Composite Interface"?

Sure sounds that way. Normally that info (the "Main Version") is stored in the misc partition, and it rather surprises me that an OTA install would cause that to happen; but I can't argue with what you are seeing.
That might mean that neither RUU nor PB00IMG.ZIP installs will work without being able to modify the RUU program to ignore version checks.
How about the adb angle - does anything come up on the USB when the 3 skating droids are showing?
No it goes all the way to the flashing processes after the phone goes into bootloader mode. then stops and gives me the error, now with adb when I turn the phone on I hear one chime and then get a device not recognized and no output from adb. Did you see my last post on the other page I edited it about the bootloaders, its says its going from 2.37.605.4 to 2.36.605.1. Sorry you posted before me so ignore this last tid bit.
Long shot, but check your HBOOT screen again - is it still S-ON (1.49.0000) ?
BTW, when you say "bootloader mode" - do you mean FASTBOOT or RUU mode? (The RUU mode is just a graphic with the HTC logo in the middle of the screen, sometimes with small arrows in each of the 4 corners of the screen. FASTBOOT mode says either "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" right on the screen).
I would think that you are starting the process with the phone in FASTBOOT mode, right?

First I put the phone into fastboot mode, then fire up RUU and it kicks the phone to a black screen with an htc logo in the middle and trys to flash it(the RUU says its putting the phone into bootloader mode so I guess thats what its in when it restarts to the htc logo).
Don't Quote me but I know the Eris is Almost like my Hero, and with the Hero there's a way to Get it into the Fastboot I Think by Holding Volume Up and Powering on the Phone! Then you Should be Able to Run the Latest RUU for the Eris... Hopefully that will get you back Right!!

As many of you know, S-Off is out, but it requires 1.10.
Thus some of us with Hboot 1.07 seemed rather stuck on S-Offing.
My 32GB GSM flyer is from Taiwan and came with Hboot 1.07 and
has software number 1.38.709.7.
Recently I was searching around, rather within the past few 2 hours I managed to successfully update and S-Off my Flyer and would like to share my findings within a guide that points to other guides so that others who are in the exact same situation may find inner peace haha.
I do thank everyone involved in this whole thing, whether it be people who wrote other guides or the people who worked on S-offing and other forum sites that I condensed this information from. (one being mobile01).
However before i get started, should you follow this guide because you are in the exact same situation, do know that this is at your own Risk
STEP 1
Download This, You will need it.
RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.00.405.3_R_Radio_20.3501.30.089BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed from
http://www.filefactory.com/file/ccd...9BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed.exe
(or any other place where this may be found).
Now follow this link and create your gold card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16147471&postcount=77
(Remember when it talks about opening the RUU and getting the Rom.zip, it means while you're running the exe, grab the image and then once you've copied it somewhere you can close it.)
STEP 2
Once you've created your goldcard, simply put your renamed Image file onto the goldcard and then stick this card back into the flyer.Reboot your htc flyer into bootloader mode and let it run the checks, Should everything be smooth (when it asks you to) tap volume up to confirm yes and it'll update. At the end of this you should have now you're newly updated 1.10 Hboot.
Once you're done updating the Hboot, take out the goldcard and either format or rename the zip to avoid installing a new ROM which may not be desirable for most people.
If you got a CID error make sure your numbers entered in the steps within the guide above were all correct.
Now Here's where it gets easier.
I did this all under windows so I wouldn't know how smooth this would be on linux.
STEP 3 (S-Off)
Use this Guide below to now S-Off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
I chose to install CWM once everything worked well.
From here you can do the following steps or just simply pick one of the custom roms that our excellent chefs have cooked up and you'll be on your way to phone calling, BT headsets and permanent root.
STEP 4
Once you've got S-Off you 'll want to root.
Use this guide to get you to perm-rooting your now S-Off Flyer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193885
STEP 5
Surely you've gone this far because you sort of like your stock rom.
Well Enable BT and Phone calling with this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185688
The other root related things can be done from dling things from the market and whatnot.
I take no credit for the guides that are linked and whatnot. It's good to see development here and I thank everyone involved with the flyer once again.
This was merely a condensed guide of what I did and followed. Do remember. This is all at your own risk should you choose to follow it.
Could also just wait for a safer way as well.
Thanks. First post btw
Chinese Version of this Guide with other guides fully translated!!

Root
Vol+=
Setcpu
1::第一步::
http://www.filefactory.com/file/ccd...9BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed.exe
2:: 第二步::
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
b. 去flyer
Settings -> applications->Development
Settings -> Connect to Pc-> Default Connection type 選charge only。
C:\Documents and Settings\XXX\Local Settings\Temp\---- (win XP)
或是
C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\(win7)
http://www.multiupload.com/EGLRDOE2D0
Setting-> Storage-> Unmount Sd Card 等他unmount完-> Format SD Card
h. 去mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/
下載 HxD Hex Editor
Edit-Copy
File->Save
http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/201108/mobile01-8514ff4b1e76b21870c3faa22ca5c051.jpg
Loading.....[PG41DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading.....[PG41DIAG..nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading....[PG41IMG.zip]
http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/201108/mobile01-6b65eef5a7c1daed1599597bcc037a26.jpg
http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/201108/mobile01-b10454d85498d8eaf904d24356c77c29.jpg
http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/201108/mobile01-00d48044d4598c35f8b82fef2bf83caa.jpg
http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/201108/mobile01-5c4a9f4d6991cd7bd1f14ce3f5b18b92.jpg
到這裡把你的 金卡從新Format(不用了)
第三步:: S-on --to- S-Off
(USB3.0有可能有問題,請用USB2.0)
a. 先去revolutionary.io (這是網址)
b. 按Download for Windows(先不要關視窗)
最好先備份你目前的ROM(下面有寫怎麼備份)
到這裡你可以到xda刷他們的ROM(個有個的優點)
Format
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680
http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=566&t=2245343&p=13#29771555
第四步 Permanent-Root(永遠的得到管理權利)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=670828&d=1311991644
b.)進去CWM(到Bootloader到Fastboot選recovery)
c.)先備份你的ROM(Backup&Restore然後選backup)
Step 4
你因該會看到一個build.prop
ro.ril.reject.cs.ss.enabled=0
ro.ril.reject.mo.ussd.enabled=0
ro.phone.function=1
ro.bt.profiles = 4270403
service.brcm.bt.ag_supported = 1
需要中文的話去market上下載MoreLocale2(就可以看中文)

Dear Sir
Thanks for you post. It's great.
I am come from Taiwan. Would you mind put it to Mobile01 ?
And Would you change it by chinese ?
Sure I will post a mandarin version later tonight, I'll translate the other guides while I'm at it for coherency.
phew took 2-3 hours but i've fully translated everything over to mandarin, I've also posted it on 01 and clarified some parts as well.
yeah no problem,
haha it's true that on xda not many people are replying vs the same thread on 01 but from the page views from xda, i figure most people are linking in and are simply too shy to say anything. (i do it too haha)

It's probably a problem with your Gold Card, Double Check you've done everything in that section correctly
Many thanks for the guide. I don't need to S-off though the phone functionality would be nice. But steps one and two were perfect for me to change my south east Asian ROM (Indonesia according to HTC) to the latest WWE. Goldcard didn't work but a full formatted SD card did the job.
Thanks for helping feed the need for the latest stock ROM!

HBOOT
I'm still having problem upgrading Hboot from 1.07.0000 to 1.10.0000.
Attached is a screenshot of my fastboot. any ideas?
not sure if i was in the same boat as others here. I have an S-Off Flyer with the 1.07 HBOOT and I wanted to do the Honeycomb update so I needed to update the HBOOT. Instead of doing this procedure I ran an RUU update (I chose a Chinese version) and it updated the HBOOT though it re-locked my device. Next I ran Revolutionary and followed the rest of the HC instructions on Modaco.
I am now running Honeycomb
I've done the Gold Card process before and though it worked I remember it being a bit of a headache. This might be easier for others in my situation.

I've done the Gold Card process before and though it worked I remember it being a bit of a headache. This might be easier for others in my situation.

yes im using the goldcard methoad now and i failed to upgrade the hboot, do you mind telling me where did you get the chinese RUU? or can i just run RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.00.405.3_R_Radio_20.3501.30.089BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed?
---------- Post added at 09:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:29 PM ----------
Nvm, found the solution by running RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.00.405.3_R_Radio_20.3501.30.08 9BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed directly, and my phone hboot upgraded to 1.10.0000
Now s-off and gain root. =)
I only used the Chinese RUU because it was handy. The only difference it should make is to flash an RUU compatible with your device and has a usable HBOOT

Format risk... Missing info: remove goldcard after updating...
hello!
Post 1, step 2:
At the end of this you should have now you're newly updated 1.10 Hboot.
once you succesfully updated with the gold card there is a missing point!
REMOVE the goldcard and rename the zip to something else or format it before booting with it in the flyer....
Otherwise.. on next reboot it will go on installing the new ROM and you'll loose all your settings (data is on internal SD thankgod..)
I've just been through this.. please update the guide for others who won't read this late post... I lost all the config... nuuuuuu!
Well thanks for the superb post anyway!
Cheers!
Jo

WTF MATES!
Ok, so I probably should have done more research but I went to google and searched BY DATE for the most CURRENT INFO on rooting the phone. I got this site: http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/11/state-of-the-htc-evo-root-world-november-2011.html
I went by the HTC unlock method because the first link (revolutionary) didn't have my HBOOT version. Now, I'm suffering because of it because my fastboot doesn't come up any more. I get the message "Update Failed! Main Version is older!" So I went to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
...and followed those instructions and...nothing worked. Is there any fix to this? Any help would be appreciated and sorry for being.... yes, a noob.
1- This is the wrong section
2- could you provide more info on your phone like what hboot version u have
If u are more specific you may have better luck...

Do you have a file called [PG86IMG.zip] still in the root of your SD card? It sounds like maybe you have an older update file that the phone wont use because you upgraded to the newest via the HTC Tool.
thank you very much, that's what it was. i removed the file and it worked

If you mount your sdcard you should see one named PG86IMG.zip, you'll need to rename or delete it.
you mean to say i have to use another custom rom instead of the one i am using
PG86IMG
i am not being able to find the solution for this prob. i have done almost everything but still the same error pops up all the time. did it several time. first of all i am not being able to get the mmcblk0p31.img file.
i almost checked all the tutorials but no use i am still not being able to figure out that where i am going wrong.

If GSM is anything like CDMA, you're S-On and because the file you're trying is older it will not let you flash it. Good luck.
Sent from the 3Dimension.
ok but now it not start .
The reason you're getting stuck is because the bootloader automatically tries to load PG86IMG.zip if it exists on the sd card, the quick and dirty way around this is to remove the SD card, boot the phone up and but the card back when the phone has booted up.
"the main version is older" problem is due to the fact that before updating the timestamps on the hboot in the PG86IMG.zip(1.49.0007) and your current hboot (1.49.0009 or 1.49.0018) are compared, and as it turns out 1.49.0007 is the oldest of the bunch, so it gets rejected.
to get around the above mentioned problem (for the GSM version at least) follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471246 it basically changes the timestamp/versionID of the 1.49.0007 to trick the phone into downgrading.
OK so I'm trying to downgrade my phone from Honeycomb to gingerbread. Thus far I've unlocked the bootloader, installed super user, well anyway I'm at the point of installing the RUU. According to globaltrons guide, my flyer which is a 16 gig wifi US only model, should use one of the brightstar firmwares. Well I tried both and I get an UNKNOWN ERROR 1555 telling me I have the wrong RUU. Now my flyer is sitting here draining the battery and I can't get it to turn off. And can someone just tell me what RUU I need? I'm sure all 16 gig us flyers are the same anyway. Its the refirb from buy.com. Anyone else who bought one probably has the same RUU
Alright help just isn't coming fast enough so I finally got it to shut off. I just remembered the 3 button trick from my captivate and waddayaknow it worked on the flyer. Now I'm going to try again and see what RUU i'm supposed to run.
Alright now that I'm out of that mess I checked the CID again and its BS_US001, and according to the guide, I should use a brightstar RUU. Well there are 2 and I tried both and both told me I'm using the wrong one. So what the hell?
i would try following this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358758
If you need to get to fast boot you should be able to do that by holding power and volume down for around 20 seconds
Do you have the Fastboot drivers installed?
I should have fastboot drivers installed. I mean I've connected it fastboot and ran many adb commands...doesn't that mean fastboot drivers are installed? Also the RUU gets to "signature verification" and fails every time!! I actually went back through and changed the version number to the version number of the other brightside ruu and same issue! Globaltron's guide must be wrong.
Anyway my tab is running right now on stock honeycomb, just no progress is being made here and its frustrating the hell out of me! I've been stuck on the same damn step for 2 days now!
the link for the BASE RUU you need is http://hyuh.net/files/flyer/RUU_US_WIFI_B10.zip
This will get the device charging again, howver you will then have to flash a custom ROM,
Globatrons Guide will show you how to use the light version i have linked to.
Any questions just as as i have done the process lots of times
Give me the details of where you started from and what you did. I think you missed a couple steps
Alright cool, but does it turn off security? I still got S-on as I need that RUU installed so I can disable it.

Ok well boot the device into fastboot then put the file i have linked tointo the same folder as your fastboot normall C:/android/Android-skd-windows/Tools
Then run the following commands
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip <downloaded file name>
Flashing will fail with Error 90 first time due to hboot change (this is normal)
fastboot flash zip <downloaded file name>
The on screen indicator on the phone will not reach fully to the right end of the progress bar, this is ok
fastboot reboot

I first unlocked the tablet through HTC developers. Then I followed step by step and installed revolutionary, and then used revolutionary to install super user permissions. I then ran this command:
fastboot getvar cid
To get the CID. The CID came back as BS_US001. So I looked at Globaltrons guide and according to it, the ones that say "Brightstar" are the ones I need. 2 came up, but the numbers that were supposed to match, matched on both, so I just picked one. the download was capped so bad from that file sharing site that I just let it download overnight and went to bed.
So today I resumed my work. I next ran these commands
adb push misc_version /data/local/misc_version

Are you S-Off Yet ?
If yes try the file i suggested, its quick and easy and then allow you to flash custom roms
p.s. i will be able to stop up until you get this sorted. So we will try it now
I'm not because if I read correctly I have to be on gingerbread to turn it off. And thats where I'm at now. The tablet has stock Honeycomb 3.2 installed. I'm basically just trying to get from stock honeycomb, to honeycomb with S-off if that helps.
Were you on hc or gb, does your bootloader say soff, what is your end game here
I got my tablet on February 29th and did the ota update to honeycomb as soon as I had it. I've kept it stock till now. My end point is honeycomb with S-off basically. If I can get to honeycomb S-off without going back to gingerbread first than I'm all for it, but if I read correctly, you have to be on gingerbread with s-off to go to honeycomb with s-off.
After all that I figured I might install leedroid.

Ok i understand where you are now , firstly are you still getting the problem where your device isn't charging ?
And the RUU you have downloaded is definitely correct ?
Man do I miss my captivate. It was as simple as #1. Plug in computer. #2. Install super one click, and you could install any rom you wanted... but it didn't have a security lock, nor did it ever have a locked bootloader either.

Oh sorry, no I got my tablet to reboot. Its sitting on my desk idling in stock honeycomb right now. And it charges fine. I just can't get an RUU to run. There are 2 brightstars so I downloaded both, and neither work. Maybe there's a third one , but according the CID the brightstar one SHOULD work, it just doesn't. According the readme with the RUU the error I"m getting means incorrect RUU.
Ex captivate user here as well, yea this is a bit more
Did you relock bootloader prior to attempting ruu

Just tried downloading them to check the RUU and the link seems to be broken, did your deffinately download ok ?
Whats the filesize, GLobatrons guide has been spot on for hundreds of users
no its still unlocked. I just had a thought here. 2 ideas actually. #1. I don't have an sd card currently in, as I never bought one for my flyer. On the steps that required an sd card I just pulled the one from my phone. I dunno maybe the RUU wants to copy itsself to the SD-card but can't because its not there. Also #2. I did reinstall my apps last night so I could use my tablet today, which are all in the internal storage. If I wipe my tablet and put an SD-card in, might that fix the problem?
Hey, I am trying to root my HTC evo 3d phone with hboot 1.58. I followed all 12 steps on htcdev.com, except on the final step I punch in: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin and enter, then noting happens. The phone is supposed to reboot with the unlock option..but nothing happens
Also, the phone is Sprint CDMA if that makes any difference, so no sim card
....................................................................................................................................................................
THREAD SUMMARY
K finally got th phone rooted so here is what you have to do. The following applied to my ***locked*** S-ON Sprint HTC Evo3d with hboot 1.58 but should work with any other version higher than hboot 1.40.
The purpose is to get S-OFF(ROOT the phone) and also continue to use your factory HbOOT 1.58 and main version in the end.
1. Brick the phone carefully following steps outlined in unknownforce's [TOOL] Ultimate Recovery Tool 3.1 (Unbrick, Downgrade, VM Radio Fix/Reset). Scroll down to the "Downgrade/Unbrick" section and begin the bricking process with the PG86IMG.zip he mentions in "things you'll need".(place the zip on SD card in the main directory and name it PG86IMG)
2. Once phone is bricked(indicated by SOLID and very dimly lit charge light with the AC charger connected. Also the phone will not turn on or boot), download latest version of URT 3.1(first link in [TOOL] thread), continue to the second step 2 which involves booting up with Linux live boot CD on your PC, OR you can use URTLiveCD 1.0 and you will not need Linux
I did it the hard way an used latest version of URT with Ubuntu v12.04 LiveCD. I would recommend URTLiveCD 1.0 as you will boot straight to the tool and will not need the Ubuntu terminal.
3. After successfully completing downgrade with URT 3.1 downgrade, boot up to your new HBOOT 1.40 bootloader screen and enter fastboot USB mode. CHECK THAT THE MAIN VERSION HAS BEEN LOWERED ALONG WITH THE HBOOT.
Log back into windows
3.(A) If you haven't done this yet, get a fastboot PC command directory to retrieve all phone identification info from the bootloader. I used ROOTEVO3DNEW to check my phone's identity info at this point(though there are many programs that do the same thing). Create a new folder in C:\ and name it rootevo3dnew. Unzip all rootevo3dnew.zip contents into that folder.
Now open the command prompt with the phone connected to PC in fastboot USB. Type cd \rootevo3dnew and enter. Now type the following: "fastboot getvar all" (without quotations) and enter. A list should appear. Check that you have: (bootloader) version-main: 0.01.651.1. If this number is still 2.95.XXX.XXX or something close to it, then YOU MUST BRICK THE PHONE AGAIN. See posts starting at #35 of this thread for a more detailed guide through the second brick. It may be very tricky but very much the same process!!!!!
4. After successfully lowering HBoot to 1.40 and the main-version to 0.01.651.1 you can run the 1.13 RUU.exe found HERE: http://d-h.st/h1p . Connect the phone to fastboot USB and RUN the .exe....after the 1.13 .exe successfully runs, your main version should now be 1.13.651.7...again, checking using your rootevo3dnew tool from 3.(A) above....
5. REVOLUTIONARY S-OFF. Very simple, download for windows(or Linux) and fill in your info and retrieve you BETA key. Run REVOLUTIONARY application (which will run in the command prompt) and after successfully completely revolutionary S-off, YOU ARE ROOTED...continue to step 6
6. RESTORE your main version to 2.95(from 1.13) by running the 2.89 zip (HERE . Place this .zip in your main directory(RENAME IT PG86IMG) on the SD card and let it unzip and install it from the bootloader.
After that, you are pretty much finished!! boot up to android(main version 2.89) and let system updates detect and bring you back to 2.95.xxx.xxx..
....
Download and Install a custom recovery. Rename that .zip PG86IMG and install from bootloader as you did with the 2.89 zip. Now you have a custom recovery where you can backup and restore, install ROMS or other software without having to rename it PG86IMG every time, wipe partitions and lots of other stuff...
Now, download this and place it on your SD main directory. Then, using your new recovery(by selecting "recovery" in bootloader menu), select "install from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard", select the SuperSU zip and let it install. Reboot, get to homepage, and install SuperSU from the play store. You now hae an administrative super APP that will let you choose which apps are given root access.
Custom ROMS can be installed the same way from the custom recovery. I am currently using Negalite BluRom and loving it
...
THE 6 STEPS OUTLINED HERE PRETTY MUCH COVER EVERYTHING FROM THIS THREAD
HUGE THANKS TO USERS MPGRIMM2 AND BRIAN706 FOR NEARLY 3 DAYS OF HARD WORK !!

Oh ok, what the hell..No, I just got the phone on ebay for $30, currently locked and I am trying to root it. Some Brittney girl owned according to phone identity info left on the phone
Do I need to downgrade the hboot from 1.58 to 1.4? Sorry I'm really new to smartphones, any help is really appreciated
Just in case it was missed, the phone doesn't reboot upon flashing the unlock token. A prompt should appear on the device and you have to confirm the bootloader unlock.
He asked about the motherboard, because there is an issue if the motherboard has been swapped; sometimes the bootloader will not unlock. I think it's due to mismatched firmware.
Usually running the RUU will solve the issue.
You can download a copy here: https://copy.com/jF1Mm
The only problem is, if the phone had taken the latest Ota update and you are on main version 2.95 instead of 2.89, the RUU will not run because it won't let you downgrade.
You can also check your main version by running a fastboot getvar all.
Is there any chance your device is already s-off from a previous owner? It will say s-on or s-off on the bootloader screen.
If you're lucky enough to already have s-off, you can skip the bootloader unlock altogether.

main version 2.95.651.5. If I factory reset the phone and discard updates, will the main version reset to 2.89 making the RUU possible?

Factory reset won't affect your main version
As DK mentioned, a factory reset only resets your current build. It would only take you back to the point of the last OTA update.
Unfortunately, you can't lower the mainversion without the bootloader unlocked, so it's a catch 22 there.
As a long shot, you might look into the new towelroot, thought I really don't think it will work for this phone because HTC locks down the /system partition. It would at least be worth looking in to.
As far as the hboot downgrade method (I assume you mean THIS) it was intended to downgrade from 1.50 Gingerbread to 1.40 Gingerbread. I have no idea if it will work to downgrade from 1.58 ICS?? You might want to ask around a little about that.
Okay... I just saw your posts in the other thread, have you actually received the unlock token from HTC?
IE, you received a file via email named Unlock_Code.bin that you placed in your fastboot directory and then typed the command: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin ??
Also, when you say nothing happens after running the command, something must happen whether it's the intended results or not. Can you tell us what the command prompt returns after running the command? Maybe just copy/paste it here.
There will either be an error or a confirmation after running the command.
Comes up as successful on the command prompt. But the phone does not reboot or direct to the unlock screen. I just remains on the fastboot USB screen and does nothing.
C:\rootevo3dnew>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.153s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
(bootloader) unlock token check successfully
OKAY [ 0.010s]
finished. total time: 0.163s
Thanks for that... That's a bummer. Looks to me like you have the motherboard swap issue. It really sucks that you can't RUU.
It looks like someone answered the question in the other thread though about the hboot downgrade method.
So I got the HBOOT downgrade(0.8.2) boot for a disk but it says the phone needs to be bricked before the downgrade..
That's where I'm at now basically, I'm going to do a little more reading on bricking...
Also would be good to have confirmed that this downgrade will work starting with hboot 1.58, so I don't mess anything up
mpgrimm2 may have found found his way over here from from the [Guide] thread

Fyi, I think Unknownforce indicated in one of his first 3 posts that u can brick with the last 2.95 PG86IMG.zip file he linked and then downgrade to 1.13 for s-off. Have to go check...
Keep in mind that you may want to considering posting any issues with the URT/Downgrade tool in Unknownforce's thread if you want any chance of assistance from him.
Bad link in his op but this post has it...
Unknownforce said:
Well, with the 2.95 OTA, they included the HBOOT in the firmware, so it's now much faster of a load time for PG86IMG when doing the brick.
I pulled the new PG86IMG.zip from the OTA update, and it's only 19MB, which takes only 15-20 seconds to fully load and be ready to press volume up to update... this will significantly cut down on the time it takes to downgrade, as you can re-try over and over very quickly now.

This is the last official update that just downloaded to my phone after the other Ruu's/updates that were posted previously

Wish someone with HTC/Sprint access would post up the latest full RUU. It was a bit of a pain stepping through the updates, but definitely easier being s-Off. Seems that if someone is S-On with the 2.95.651.6 update and can't get past step 13 of the HTC Unlock or needs to RUU back, their only option is Unknownforce's Hboot Downgrade Ultimate Toolkit and "Brick it Twice" to get back to an earlier version for Revolutionary S-Off and then go through the updates from 2.89 on up.
Hope this helps others.
EDIT:
I may be too tired at the moment to figure this out, but for some darn reason both the official OTA Updates would not flash from the bootloader on a stock 2.89.651.2 phone with S-Off (both phones actually). Didn't matter if it was renamed PG86IMG.zip or left as officially downloaded to sdcard/download and booting into the stock recovery. The MD5 of my 651.5 update file matches Ramjet73's as well. But If I connect to wifi, do a system update, let it download (how I got the files) and reboot automatically, it works fine and updates without issue.

Forgive me for being such a noob with this stuff.
I'm reading about hboot 1.58 needing to be bricked twice to be able to run the 1.13 RUU.
So to start, do I place the 18.7mb PG86IMG .zip (from the second quote in your last post) in the "download" folder of the sd card?
The stock

is there, so do I remove that one and replace it?
I don't think so but just to be sure, I drop the 18.7 PG86IMG zip folder in downloads and begin the brick process, then run the hboot 0.8.2 to downgrade?
*EDIT* ok, place in the MAIN directory. It's working and is unloading the .zip in bootloader
I need a new data sync cable, mine has started intermittently losing connection off and on...going to wait until I have a new one before I go any further.
Also, the latest version of ubuntu that Linux offers did not work. I found an earlier version(12.04) and the boot disk works so I am good to go on that
What is Hboot 0.8.2 ? Are you using Unknownforce's URT 3.1 Tool and following the "Downgrade/Unbrick" section?

Yep, that is an outdated/earlier version. You need to use the Ultimate Recovery Tool from Unknownforce's thread as I linked earlier (URT v3.1) and use the LiveCd link.

THANKS
Well I just did a dry run with the Linux boot disk and terminal. Extracted downgrade.zip to HOME folder, ran the commands. I'm getting the correct code returns in the terminal. I got up to the:
Code:
Step 1... Plug in Device while holding down Volume Down key...
Waiting for device...
Just a matter of getting a new data sync cable now and I can do this...
Again thanks for your help, I'm pretty new to this process I've never altered a devices firmware manually before so it's an awesome experience as well..
Will report back in a couple days, hopefully with a newly rooted phone
--------
Also, do you have a direct link to the correct 1.13 RUU EXE to run after the downgrade?
