[Q] Update Firmware with a custom kernel. - Optimus One, P500, V General

What will happen when I update my firmware with a custom kernel?
Will my phone brick after I update my firmware?

thats a pretty broad question. afaik flashing your new kernel will probably just affect performance and battery life

Why didn't you ask this question in the Villian ROM thread? I keep seeing these very personalized one liner threads that just clutter up the forums when they could be easily asked in an existing thread...
You will not be able to update via Kies in the future but need the Odin /custom route .

New users aren't allowed in the Development section.
When you've installed VR, you won't get KIES updates.
Given the unreliability of KIES, I would never use it to update personally...
You can install future VR updates via ODIN, just like normal. Perhaps I'll even make a way to update OTA? All depends on if I ever actually get this blasted SGS2...
no, the rom works well so far

Only if you want to get it thru Kies
there is a .tar file in the main Official ICS thread that is used with Odin
Im not sure if I'm being misunderstood, I'm wondering if its necessary for me to upgrade to official ICS in order to flash future ICS ROMs?

I get what you are asking, ignore the last guys comment. Yes, to upgrade official firmware you have to be on official firmware unless someone makes a one click odin for people to install. If there are anymore upgrades from AT&T you will have to be on stock Gingerbread or Stock ICS to do the official upgrade.

I'm running it and flashed it thru Odin
And I wasn't on official firmware
Kies is another option.
Read up before you bash
The majority is flashing thru Odin and rooting thru Odin as well

Not true. I was on the CM 9.1 rom from hotwire, connected to kies and ran the update with no issue.

I don't believe so, no. When you flash a custom ROM (whether ICS or otherwise) you should do a full wipe anyway, so being on official ICS is irrelevant.
And the developers comment out or remove the signature checks for their roms so you can upgrade from any rom but samsung roms do a signature check and abort if stock rom and modem are missing.
Thank you very much guys.

I used Kies on my PC whilst in Download mode twice yesterday to put the official update on my phone.
I had FJ's UCLF5 / IMM76D B9 on my Note both times.
I used the process detailed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654
XDA is no longer worth my time.

Question about firmware

I have a question. If i update my s3 via OTA, does it mean i'm updating to a stock rom? Will it affect my rooting or whatsoever? And can i downgrade if i want to?

Yes and yes. But you can easyly reroot with CF-Root. Or you can flash the firmware with mobile odin pro then your root is untouched. Yes you can flash other firmware to downgrade.
Firmwares can be downloaded at sammobile.com or checkfus
If you update via OTA firmware stocks of your s3 , you will receive an update of your firmware stock samsung, updates are no wipe , you can make a downgrade with ODIN ....
I have another question. I'm enroute to flashing the omega rom on my phone. If the official jellybean comes out, what do i do? Install via KIES? My phone will still be in the rooted stage right?

As soon as official jellybean drops there will be a custom ROM out within hours, and the firmware will be available at samfirmware.com as soon as it is released.
You'll have loads of options.
The custom ones will be pre-rooted, the stock one from samfirmware can be rooted with cf-root. (The leaked one can so I presume official one will too)

Hi, if you are doing OTA it will be 4.2.2 or 4.2.3 at best, you will loose root, but not files or data.
Some apps may stop working or work differently, nothing to worry about.
Thanks and hows that? Major improvements? Something always weird with this one was the greenish tint when shooting with the flash... Is that fixed?
And there is a new chainfire's root out there i guess....
Thanks

Just want to say this isn't correct. Don't know if it's mistyped or something else, but it should be 4.1.2 'at best'.
Last official (thus OTA available) update for S2 will be 4.1.2. Sad as it is, for today's standards it is still acceptable.
what do you guys think about the 4.3 like sentinel rom?

4.1.2 is the latest (and last) official Samsung update. There are 4.2 and 4.3 roms available, but those are custom ones.

Yes i was wrong, long time didn't have to use stock.
As for ROM selection, try PAC rom, (latest nightly 4.3.1) I am really happy with this rom as my dd.
thanks guys, I am about to upgrade, just a question, can I use the OTA update even if my phone is already rooted and I have Siyah kernel on? is it going to break or get stuck?

The OTA will probably fail.....the OTA package looks for a stock setup, and if you've modified that setup in any way (custom kernel) the OTA won't install.....even if it *didn't* fail, the kernel would be overwritten and you'd lose root.
If it were me, I'd make use of chainfires mobile odin, download a jb firmware from sammobile and update that way......

Did you enable the 'ever root' option in mobile Odin?
If not, you'll have to root the phone afterwards (if you want to)
A good place to start is the PhilZ kernel (rooted stock kernel + touch cwm)

cheers, actually no ever root since I used the lite version eh eh... I just rooted with this method w/ Siyah Kernel. worked like a Charm... now I guess I will be busy customizing it.. it seems much faster between home screens I have to say!
thanks again for the help
Gab
Yeah....I guess that's 'project butter' or whatever it's called....it's supposed to give an overall smoother performance........
If you are going to stay with stock, my advice would be to 'de bloat' it.....I used Titanium Backup to freeze the bloat first, then delete it after I'd found out that it wasn't needed/critical for the phone to run.......

The thing that I hate the most on stock rom is that it drains battery too fast

[Q] Is the I9300XXUGMK6 stock ROM any good?

I've been running custom ROM's on my phone since the day I got it, and I was wondering if the I9300XXUGMK6_BTU ROM is decent? What would be the limitations and benefits of switching from OnmiROM, (which I love), to the stock Samsung 4.3 firmware? I would be rooting it.
