So I just got this phone early today, have it rooted and unlocked etc. now I just need to flash my first custom rom.
I loaded up Alien 2 onto an SD card, rebooted into recovery through CWM, ran a backup etc. from recovery, I wasn't able to see my sd card for some reason. This was after I wiped my data of course.
So I try to restore my backup, and it can't mount /data for whatever reason. I rebooted the phone and my old rom was still there and in working order.
What did I do wrong? I moved the rom into internal storage so I'll try that next time. Will /data screw me over though?

You'll need to unlock the bootloader then fastboot flash Tenfar's custom CWM recovery image from the development section. The recovery in ROM Manager is broken for wiping data and so I assume other things aswell.

In Tenfar's CWM thread someone made a .zip file of his recovery so it can be flashed using ROM Manager - no need for fastboot now.

I tried flashing a rom as usual using Amon Ra Recovery(have previously flashed roms multiple times successfully), and It will not load, it stays in the boot loop, So I figured it may be the rom, I wiped everything and tried to go back to a previous rom, still bootlooping, next I tried to go to my nandroid backup and this time it boots up and only stays long enough for the lockscreen to pop up then back to bootloop. It is very weird, I pulled battery and went back into recovery and now everytime I try to wipe cache it reboots my phone. I can still wipe data, system, dalvik cache. Is there a way to install ruu using Hboot, can you rename it to PH98img and put on root of card and install that way? Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!
What version of Amon ra are you using I know of a thread That had the same issue posted. The developer pointed out he needed to updated.10.

Ok format all to ext3 and then used my nandroid backup and it worked! Thanks a lot. I appreciate your help. Is there a way I can keep this from happening in the future or I am I good now that I formatted all to ext3?

Okay, so I am s-off, and have TWRP recovery. I was trying to use the superwipe.zip, and it formatted and then I tried to flash CleanROM, then it would only boot into the bootloader. I then tried to flash ViperROM, and was able to get it to flash, and boot. So I rebooted and tried to rewipe and flash CleanROM again. Somewhere in the midst of all this it started telling me it couldn't mount /system, /data. I'm guessing corrupted partitions. Does anyone know if I can format them from fastboot or something else I could try? I can get into bootloader and recovery. Anyhelp would be graet.

They aren't even mountable from recovery.
I don't trust super wipe zips because of things like that.. wait... Did you ever flash CWM?

You can wipe the system and stuff and you recovery. This should help. If you do put the roms on your device put them on the phone memory and not the external memory source. Tell me if this works.

I did fix the problem, but thanks. It was as you said. I read somewhere that apparently md5's and potentially files could corrupted in twrp while dealing with the ext_sd.

So I am S-On, running CM 10.1.3 stable.
I was on OTA 3.16.651.3 with 2.09 hboot when I successfully unlocked my bootloader using HTCDev unlock and installed TWRP and SU using BigDaddy619's kit.
I wanted to try out CM 10.1.3 stable ROM. I was able to transfer the zip via usb to the Internal SD, then Installed inside TWRP. I then realized I needed to do the boot.img kernel flash using fastboot. I did this, and the phone booted up!
I have tried CM for the last 3 days, and like some aspects, but I really want GPS and Bluetooth to work.
So I tried to flash back to zhaus's stock ROM. The problem is I no longer have an internal SD mounted, and the phone won't let me download files. I can not for the life of me figure out how to remount the internal SD so I can download to it. Plus, the phone won't allow me to fastboot update or push the file to the phone using ADB. It's weird, since fastboot works but errors, but ADB doesn't even find my device.
Another odd thing is when I enter TWRP and try to do a factory reset/wipe, it always says FAILED.
I am super confused on how to proceed in switching back to a stock ROM. Hoping someone can throw me a life preserver.
You need to format your internal storage. To do this, boot into recovery and connect your phone to your PC. Select the 'Mount' option, then select your internal storage. You should then be prompted to format your storage on your computer.
Also, when wiping with TWRP, choose the advanced wipe option and select Dalvik cache, cache, data & system.
GPS should be working on that build of CM. You may need to try the GPS fix from a Sense ROM before dismissing the issue as GPS simply not working.

I'm confused, because both of those things work fine on CM10.1. Methinks you should S-OFF to avoid these types of issues going forward . . . .

I don't think I properly installed CM 10.1. I initially tried to flash cm-10.1.3-jewel inside TWRP, BEFORE flashing the kernel with the extracted boot.img in fastboot. I never tried to re-flash the cm-10.1.3-jewel zip after flashing the kernel.
My second mistake was selecting factory reset in the bootloader, which screwed up the Internal SD mount.

It's best to avoid a factory reset from the bootloader. Anything you do as far as wiping should be done from recovery. Don't sweat it, though, you aren't the first person who has done it and you surely won't be the last

Here's my situation--I had been running MeanBean for a while and decided to try Kush's KK build (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518211&highlight=loop). I flashed the recovery he linked to, then installed the rom and gapps he linked to. TWRP said everything went successfully. But, when I reboot, the phone just hung at the HTC splash screen. I tried flashing again, downloading fresh and flashing again, wiping the cache, etc. Nothing worked.
So, I decided to go back to my last nandroid of MeanBean. But, after TWRP "successfully" recovered to the latest nandroid, I got stuck in a boot loop. The phone gets through the first part of the boot animation, then freezes and reboots. I tried installing a fresh version of MeanBean, flashing back to TWRP 2.6.3, but nothing has eliminated the boot loop.
I'm s-off and I've never gotten stuck like this before. Anyone have any thoughts?
Reboot to the bootloader and run the command "fastboot erase cache" from a command prompt, then try a fresh install. Are you sure you're S-off?

Thanks for the suggestion. I erased the cache from fastboot and did a fresh install of MeanBean. No luck--still in the same boot loop.

Have you tried fastboot flashing the boot image from the rom? You shouldn't need to if you're s-off but couldn't hurt if you're still getting boot loops.

Thanks, Fin. I tried fastboot flashing to boot.img separately (which shouldn't be necessary with s-off) after a fresh install, and I'm still in the boot loop. Any other ideas?
Go to recovery, do a full system wipe (data, system, Dalvik & cache) and re-flash the ROM after a fresh download. Really, though, you shouldn't have to wipe cache, since it's under /data.

What ROM are you trying to flash at this point, and also, which recovery are you using, the one posted in Deck's OP, or one from the TWRP website? If you're trying to flash a 4.4 ROM, use the recovery posted in Deck's OP. If you're trying to flash a different ROM, use the regular TWRP recovery.

Trying to flash MeanBean, which is what I've been using previously. I flashed the regular 2.6.3 Jewel TWRP.
It sounds to me like you have the same problem I did. When in recovery and you wipe caches does it say failed? Look into your internal sdcard and if it is empty then it has been erased and corrupted. If so remove your sd card and plug your phone into your pc and mount usb. If it says the card needs to re-format then that is your problem. Re-format your internal sdcard and replace your external sd-card. Flash meanbean and reboot.

Hmm, don't think that's it. I've been able to mount internal storage and wipe the cache, etc. just fine.

Okay now for the question... I was running stock 4.1.2 with siyah kernel 6.0 b5. Then I decided to install philz kernel, but ended up in bootloop. Then I tried flashing dorimanx but still in bootloop. All the while I wiped everything before flashing.
Now im stuck as I can boot into recovery via any kernel but ultimately phone is stuck.
What to do?
And can anyone give me steps to install sentinel rom from this stage?

Mate, sorry for waiting, I was out of home. We will get your ROM back as soon as the phone boots again.
Don't worry, it doesn't sound serious so far. We have recovery and download mode (so topic name "nothing works" isn't really correct)
Formatting /system wipes all data from the system partition (so your system will be gone then) and it is important to do before installing new ROMs (essencially important for KitKat). It can't do any harm. As you have tried to install other kernels and didn't work we should check first what did you try to flash so far and it didn't boot? Is that what you wrote all what you have tried?
Now let me know please which recovery do you have now and is it the same version like when you have created your nandroid backup? If the recovery is the same, I would indeed try to restore nandroid backup right after wiping /system. Before you wipe the system just let me know: can you use ADB? If yes, check do you have ADB connection in the recovery mode?

Will it wipe the internal memory? Or the rom in the phone?
I have cwm based recovery v. 6.0.1.2. Yes I used it to make the backup.
Checking for adb.. How do I do it? .

Hi! Internal memory usually shouldn't get wiped by formatting /system, as it is "storage", not part of the system. I would give a try, wipe all: data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache (advanced) and format /system (mounts and storage). Then back to the main menu --> backup & restore --> restore from (internal or external memory where your nandroid is saved) and choose your backup. It should reboot normally then.

Thanks for helping, but I ended up downloading the stock rom and flashing it. Everything was normal. Then I installed cm10.2 so everything's great now. Thanks!

Cool, @AndroidReborn! Now you can install your old ROM again and restore nandroid. Keep that stock FW saved on your PC, so if your phone gets ever again soft-bricked, no problem to revive it again.
I am wondering how nobody here responsed your help prompt, we have in i9000 help threads always handfull people of experience and skills who are ready to help in need. And there are double amount of the SGS2 units sold around the world.... strange.

No idea. The people seem pretty 'busy'. Thanks for helping. Just one teeny tiny last question.. How do I install cm11 or any kitkat rom over this? Cwm is 6.0.4.5 so it's compatible...

If you want to flash kitkat, the first thing you need to do is flash a kitkat compatible CWM (v6.0.4.7). If you try to flash KK with an 'older' CWM, you'll get 'installation aborted....error status 7' or something similar........
I'm currently running @infected_s KK build, and in the OP, you will find download links for the correct CWM, ROM and GApps files.......

Yes, mate, CWM 6.0.4.5 is capable of flashing KitKat.
It is usually always the same:
download your ROM zip and compatible Gapps
check in the phone (or PC) if the zips are corrupted through download (if they open after clicking them, they are fine)
move the zips to the folder you will flash it from (if you use PC to flash zips with ADB sideload, put them in the sdk/platform-tools folder)
make nandroid backup of your presently used ROM
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache (advanced)
format /system (under mount and storage)
flash ROM.zip
flash Gapps
reboot
It is in general always good to read in the development thread of the ROM you attend to flash in the opening post which Gapps are recommended, or if there is some unusual order of flashing (sometimes, developers recommend reboot system after flashing ROM, and after that going to recovery and flash Gapps zip.
Some KitKat ROMs struggle with root access by using Superuser, so SuperSU should be flashed. If SuperSU app from Play Store gives errors by updating binary, you should uninstall SuperSU app then, find in the Chainfire's thread the compatible UPDATE-SuperSu.zip (version for your phone), flash its zip in the recovery, install SuperSU app, update binary (either "normal" or "through CWM/TWRP")
