Short question, I am going to buy a tablet tomorrow, I like the idea of having 48GB with an Asus, since I can buy a 32GB microSD card
However, I like the idea of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 since it is SUPER light (I tested it on Verizon today)
however, the Asus Eee Pad transformer weights about the same as an original iPad, so it wouldn't be too bad
I want to use it for
1) GPS
2) Videos
3) eBooks
4) Android in general
There is a $200 difference between an expandable Asus Eee Pad Transformer and a non-expandable 32GB Samsung Galaxy 10.1 (I have to buy a 32GB model since it's not expandable)
Thanks in advance for your recommendations, is the $200 difference really worth it?
They are both excellent tablets. It really comes down to what you intend to do with it. It looks like you'll mostly be using your tablet to consume content versus creating content. If that's the case, then the Galaxy might have a slight advantage due it's weight.
I went with the Transfomer because I wanted to see how far I could push a tablet as a productivity tool. Because of the dock, the Transformer is much better at content creation.
As far as the weight goes, the 4oz difference between a Galaxy and a Transformer just isn’t that big a difference... at least not to me.
Another factor in my decision was how aggressive Asus has been in updating the Transformer. They are doing a very good job at releasing updates in a timely fashion.
They are both great android tablets. I think the best way to answer the question is whether you would buy the base for the TF. If so and you like the idea of a keyboard and extra battery than get the TF. If you are going to use them as a straight tablet get the SGT, as it's better in the tablet form factor. I got both of them because I am a gadget lover and they are both excellent. I am typing this response on my TF with the keyboard dock right now because I prefer to type on a physical keyboard.

What does this have to do with accessories?
But other than that, both of them have their pros and cons.
ASUS Transformer:
+MicroSD
+Keyboard dock (additional battery life; keyboard; 2 USBs)
+Great Support (Fast Updates.. Don't even think Samsung has 3.2 yet!)
+Cheaper and you can get more for your money.
+Voodoo Sound
Samsung Galaxy Tab
+Lighter
-Expensive
.. and i can go on and on
No more SS for me. It takes them ages to come up with firmware updates.
If the tab had a microsd slot id be typing on one right now, but it doesn't so I'm not. I traded my ipad2 for the TF and dock. I don't use the dock but I will probably when I go out of town for work. Use the tablet through out the day for Internet and notes and dock it at night for emails and surfing.
It's cheaper and offers more options, even if you don't use all of them, I can sleep better at night knowing that I didn't pay more for less.
The Tab is sexy though but it's so thin that they say you can actually feel it bend in some cases. Plus they also have rings on the screen when you press.

As an owner of both, I prefer the Samsung because I realized I didn't use the KB/Dock as I thought I would & prefer as light as possible. Nevertheless, both are great devices & I wish the Samsung had a MicroSD slot but it doesn't. TBH, there isn't much of a big difference besides the $.

I really like the TF dock, surprised at how much different experience with the dock.
The MicroSD on GT 10.1 does not matter. You can use the USB host adapter with any flash stick or MicroSD adapter, $20 from Samsung website.
However, Samsung might stop selling GT 10.1 because of Apple lawsuit and patents.

so i am wondering about any known issues with the galaxy tab i had quite a few issues with my transformer light bleed lag, won't charge reboots etc.. so i was wondering if there are any major issues with the transformer at all that anyone has noticed before i actually but my refurbished galaxy tab 10.1 from fry's btw i was wondering if the 1 year warrently with samsung is still valid when i buy a refurb ?
thanks in advance for all of your help and support
You're best to look through the forums and judge for yourself really, but personally I'm much happier with the Samsung than I was with the TF.
I wasn't unhappy with my Transformer, the build quality was fine considering the device cost $100 less than other options. What did it for me though was my real life use experiences, I discovered in situations where I needed a keyboard,I really needed windows apps and was reaching for my laptop instead of the Transformer.
The Galaxy Tab lets me check email, monitor my website on the run, it's camera while not of pro quality is better than that of the TF, the overall lighter, sleeker form factor majes it easier to hold one handed for long periods of time. Galaxy Tab is perfect for use for me on the road covering live events or sitting on my porch reading an e book.
Thanks guys gala,y tab should be hete today fedrx says by 700 I hope its this morning

Both tablets seem to have the same hardware and the only difference I can really find between the two is that the Xoom runs stock 3.1 out of the box and the Tab runs Touchwiz on top of 3.1 and that the tab is a bit thinner than the Xoom.
That being said, if you had to choose again, would you get the Tab again or would you switch to the Xoom or another tablet and why?
I am looking to get one of these tablets so I greatly appreciate any useful input.

I am extremely happy having my Tab and would not change it if I had the choice again.
People say light weight and thin is their reason, andthe light weight is one of my biggest reasons. I'm still working on my undergrad and take the train to campus every day. Carrying my laptop (for a semester) then netbook with my books was a heavy load to carry every day, the Tab and an external keyboard has completely replaced those electronics.
The screen is another reason. When I am taking the train, a lot of times I am streaming videos from my server or stored on the Tab. The quality of the screen is far better than the xoom (even though the comparison was in the store).
I am a big fan of Touchwiz. I use the mini app tray all the time to take extra notes while working on something. If I am working on something while in class, I can pop up the mini tray to use memo to make the extra notes and then memo syncs to my google docs.
As the above said, weight is the most important issue when using a tab. In most cases, you will use one hand to hold the tab and the other hand for scrolling, gesturing and so on. Xoom is too heavy for one hand use
I had the Xoom when it first came out. My biggest complaint was the AWFUL screen. It's also a lot heavier and thicker than the Galaxy tab, and the edges are very sharp which meant one hand holding was painful.
The only positive thing it has going for it is stock Honeycomb and it gets the updates before any other tablet. I'm not a fan of touchwiz and prefer stock honeycomb. We'll have to live with honeycomb 3.1 until the ICS source is released and a developer turns it into a ROM. But the Xoom will most likely get ICS right away directly from google or Motorola.
Had the Xoom (and a few other tabs) before settling on the GT10. Consider how you'll be using your tab: If it will be propped up on a desk or if you'll be holding it. You won't want to hold the Xoom. This is what made my decision to sell the xoom (and the iconia, and the dell streak, and the chinatab).
The other thing to consider is whether the ports are important to you. Of course, there are adapters for all of these things, but they're expensive and hard to find. HDMI: important only if you want to output presentations, or if you're in a hotel room and the TV has an HDMI input (and you really don't want to watch your movie on the 10" screen). USB: if you need it. I do all transfers wirelessly (wifi file transfer pro), so the only advantage would be USBhost for thumb drives (external HDDs don't generally work with the xoom). MicroSD: For me, 16gb is enough; I use dropbox, google music, and netflix, so I really don't use much space. You can use the USB adapter to give you access to external flash storage, so there's your workaround.
prefer xoom
maybe i'm more a heavyweight champ now , but I decided for the xoom.
My biggest reason was: I can put in a microSD card.
Now I can watch my foto's from my camera directly on the xoom,
without having to use other devices and adapters.
Maybe this is the replacement/new model BBuy is talking about. Maybe it will have a plastic back cover....
Sorry if you guys have seen this info.....

It's called the transformer lite I found it in the system files tf201x also found 3g version of the prime

i doubt it's a replacement, but rather just another model in the line, like the galaxy tab 7.7, 8.9 and 10.1
i heard they were making a smaller tablet, but i didn't know they were going to make a dock for it, seems like it might be a bit cramped at that size, but i'm sure it would be pretty handy for people that are on planes a lot, since those tray tables are so freaking tiny.

No..lol this is the cheaper tablet they've been talking about. there's actually like 3 different ones. all less powerful than prime. how are they gonna replace prime with a smaller unit, less specs and features, etc.. I've heard of it though. they just want to enter the 7 in. market also to get a price of the pie from Amazon Kindle Fire. although low powered, those things been selling like hotcakes. apple noticed this and other companies. that's why more than likelyy apple will release a smaller cheaper Ipad to try to take market from Amazon.
it will most def have a plastic back.
now that the asus transformer tf300t is only $280, do you think it's worth the upgrade? I can probably sell my touchpad 32gb for $160 or so...
My main concern is the display. I read a lot on my touchpad and I feel like the resolution is not high enough. The TF300t has a 1280x800 screen resolution, which I don't think is that much higher than the touchpad.
any inputs?
It maybe late for the advise but yes the update will be great here is a link where u can compare them plus Asus tp has 149ppi and touch pad has lower ppi...

I was in the same boat. Frustrated with (but still loving) the Touch Pad and wanted something new, especially with all the deals going on. Best thing I did was take the blinders off and look at everything on the market. I went with the Samsung series 3 ChromeBook and couldn't be happier. Simply an awesome machine for doing what I do 90% of the time - hang out on the web. For the other stuff I still have and use my TouchPad but honestly, after using my TP every day for a year I just realized I haven't picked it up in a week. That says something. Tablets are great but they aren't all 'that'.
I had both a TP and a Galaxy tab 10.1 with a 1280x800 res screen. The higher resolution does make a pretty noticeable difference IMO. That's really the only thing that I didn't like about the TP when I compared the two.
I had to return the g-tab, but we just picked up a refurbed 16gb TF300 bundle that included the keyboard dock for $299. was too good of a deal to pass up.

I was really close to picking up that TF300 w/ dock, but finally decided to hold off for another "generation" of tablets. I've been eyeing the Note 10.1 or Nexus 10 though. To be honest, I barely use my Touchpad as it is though.
I'm thinking about getting a tablet for about 300 bucks, I dont want to really spend much more than that. Do you guys suggest the Prime or the TF300? Is there any other I should look at for this price range that have a quad core w/ microsd and hdmi? I was looking at maybe the refurbs on newegg, does anyone have experience with their refurbs? Thanks for any suggestions.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it, I'd say the least to go for a Nexus 7. This thread doesn't necessarily need to be a other long winded rant about the dreadful i/o speeds that creates lag coupled with the horrible wifi problems that come along with the aluminium back cover which can be solved using a stretch of aluminium foil pasted on your prime. Buttttttt! If typing is your kind of thing the Transformer series as a whole does seem to be the best package although there are other alternatives like a N7 or your phone coupled with a blue tooth keyboard
Honestly the Transformer Prime is a damn good tablet....if you get one of the later versions where Asus 'fixed' a few things. My WiFi isn't terrible. I can get nearly full bars all around my house which is decently sized with an excessive amount of walls. I even get service through the wet-wall (the one with all the pipes for the toilets and such) and 2 other normal walls. I/O isn't truly terrible if you don't use stock kernels. Asus fudged an amazingly powerful tablet. People that use my Prime always say "I can see why you paid $500 for that thing. It's AWESOME!". But it's up to you man. The N7 is great but has it's issues too (maybe Asus fudged another tab? who knows).
Well.. Not to say that everyone is having a bad experience with the Prime but if you're going to make a purchase, no one can say for sure what you're in stall for

Good assessment. I have an early S/N Prime (STOCK - NOT ROOTED or UNLOCKED) and it still WOW's people who play with it. Mine has decent WiFi, I can stream music from my house to my detached garage (about 40 feet from the house) with no problems. Every device will have problems; it's just the nature of the technology right now. My wife's iPad has had some issues connecting and staying connected to our network at home (old Linksys router) so maybe a lot of WiFi problems people reported right after the Primes launch was due to older wireless routers being used. Is the Prime perfect? No but it is still one of the fastest tablets so far. I received the dock this Christmas and it truly "TRANSFORMS" the whole user experience. I'm not a big fan of touchscreen keyboards so the dock was a must when I was considering a device like this. Plus the extra battery, full size USB port and full size SD card port on the keyboard set the Asus Transformer line apart from the competition IMHO. I recommend the Prime all the time.
I have to ask, aren't the nexus 7s made by Asus? I don't quite understand why you'd tell someone not to buy a prime because Asus sucks and then suggest to buy a nexus 7 if they are both manufactured by Asus.
I have had my prime since Christmas. I bought it used on swappa and at first was not impressed as it came with CM10 and on ics firmware. I did the nvflash and updated it to jellybean and loaded hairybean. I absolutely love this thing. It's fast, responsive, and all around not what people complain about on here. Did I just get a good one? Am I not as picky as other people? I don't understand what the problem is. I guess it could be worse, you could have bought a Samsung galaxy tab and not had a sd slot or jellybean. The prime blows it out of the water. I have also done side by side with ipad2 and the prime out performs it as well.
End rant. Just my 2 cents.
