So, long story short; about this time last year, she decided on the Eris, as she liked the design and feel. It seemed decent in the store, but within a month or so, it bogged down, and at this point, she now uses it for NOTHING more than just a basic cell phone.
With that said, we have been looking at other phones (Thunderbolt), but with money being tight, alternatives are more than welcomed. So, i got to thinking; i am no stranger to modding and rooting, but it is normally my stuff. I am totally in the dark when it comes to what has happened on the Eris's front, and thus my post here.
I know there are roms out there, even some decent GB ones. And i am fairly sure some kernels will allow some overclocking. But for me, in order to really justify wiping her phone, and making her redo all the customizations, i guess i really need to understand just how much (or little) the actual user experience is improved. With a good ROM and overclock, will the phone be noticeably quicker than the the phone as it is now? I know the Arm v6 CPU is quite dated, but is there any hope for this little phone?
Or, should we call it a wash, and be on the lookout for a good used, or a decent new one (though, we hate contracts.. ugg..)? All advice is welcomed!
The default ROM is horrifyingly bad. It's buggy, slow, drains the battery just sitting there... really, just the worst.
Any ROM here would be infinitely better. Battery life will improve, responsiveness goes way up, everything. You might want to stick to a Sense ROM like Nonsensikal for a proof of concept to her, but you can't really go wrong.
Do anything to get her off stock. I'm not kidding.

Thanks for the advice. I am guessing Nonsensikal is at least Froyo (currently at work, so i don't have more than a few mintues to post... will do more research tonight).
Also, what are people able to get in terms of overclocking? And on the poor old Eris, is it even worth it?
You can generally get 710 safely. That's a pretty big boost from stock. Most ROMs come overclocked, not sure about Nonsensikal. People also seem to like xtrSense, but that's still 2.1.
But like I said, you can't really go wrong. Absolutely anything is better than stock.

At this point, I think I'd not even bother with any of the Froyo ROMs and just go either xtrSENSE or xtrROM, or go to one of the Gingerbread ROMs. There is an issue with GPS with all of the Froyo ROMs that I know of (after about 20 to 30 minutes of use, the GPS starts getting spurious data; if you are using Navigation, you generally need to reset the GPS radio to get it back on track.) This issue is gone with GSB (and I believe with Ginger Tazz as well.)
xtrSENSE is a good first root ROM, as it is exactly stock with none of the lag issues that plague stock over time.
+1 xtrSENSE. It won't be culture shock for your wife, since it's stock-based, but has overclocking/underclocking/a choice of governors, more memory for apps, I think it has 50% Time Without Singal fix built in.
If she's not a power user hook her up with an xtrRom. But if she is a power user I would highly suggest GSB. Ever since GSB is the only GB rom that is officially supported by CyanogenMod. Our very own Workshed just so happens to be the Eris maintainer as well. Good luck!

My wife and I are due for an upgrade in Oct. Heard on Android Forums about Workshed's GSB ROM's. Installed it on mine and my wife's phones, she checked my phone out liked the ROM. She is a Shed fan now. Really gives your Eris a new lease on life. Highly recommend.
Nonsensikal V16.1 Final and Froshedyo V11 Final are stable & reliable, both on 2.2 - and recommended - with many apps via the Market. They are 1 up from the XtrSense and XtrRom.
GSG V2.8 just released is very promising once everything is fine tuned and finalized, turning this little Eris devil into a speeding demon.
To sum it, plenty of juicing up to make this an everyday workhorse with a new lease on life.

Give OMGB 1.1.1 a try. I've been running it for about 5 days now with NO issues whatsoever. Extremely stable and fast.

i always find myself going back to it no matter what rom i try next fastest and most stable one i found... i don't care much for gb as its slower than froyo imo...it just has more features
We have two Eris phones and installed GSB on both about a year ago, latest GSB 2.8 is very stable and fast.
I installed GSB on both mine and wifes Eris nearly a year ago. The latest GSB 2.8 is very fast and stable. My only complaint is web browsing is still slow to load pages. I have flashed several others and always go back to GSB. My wife was ready to trash her Eris before I rooted it and installed GSB. She gets highly excited when her phone doesn't work right.

My wife's Eris was getting extremely slow and the battery wasn't lasting a day. Loaded xtrSense and it's made a world of difference.
Loaded widgets and apps back the way she had it and except for some missing data in a few apps and different wallpapers, she couldn't tell any difference in the interface.
The Eris runs much smoother, responds a lot quicker, and battery life is outstanding. Going on 40 hours since last unplugged with moderate use and 57% still battery remaining.

Running GSB overclocked 480-768 Mhz (bit more battery drain but smoothes things out) with V6Supercharge installed (option 6). Runs silky smooth and I'm very happy. Way better than stock!
My wife uses a Samsung Vibrant and there are just so many issues with it. Currently, it's on the latest stock Froyo release. It keeps losing all of her home screen icons (using stock TWLaucher) and we have to kill TWLauncher or reboot to get them back. Seems to have lag all over the place. Also, wifi signal strength is poor. The wifi calling app constantly turns off saying the wifi signal isn't good enough.
I'd like be interested in trying out a custom ROM. I've tinkered with some of the leaked ROMs, so I'm familiar with ODIN. I've used CWM on my Droid X before, so I should be ok with that as well.
She's not interested in 100 different themes and fancy icons and fancy features, etc. We are just going to want something that's close to stock with some tweaks that might fix some of the issues we are having. Not interested in partially working ROMs where the GPS doesn't work or issues with the camera, etc. Would like wifi calling to work as well. Need something totally stable. I'm not going to want something that's going to need updating weekly either.
Anything out there that meets what I'm looking for?
Please make suggestions.
Hi, same situation here, my gf has stock vibrant with froyo and many issues...
I've cm7 on my N1 so I considered it for the vibrant but at the moment it have troubles with gps and wifi SO I've searched a lot and the much more stable rom (for me of course) is the projectV, it's based on the official froyo with some tweaks and fixes, seems pretty stable until now

I'm not doing this for the eye candy (extra lock screens, etc.), I just want things to run more smoothly.
This probably won't help the low wifi signal though, since it's using the same modem as stock froyo, right?

It'll definently improve Lag and that icon problem that you have will not happen. And almost every ROM in here has a Lagfix, so Project-V does have one and will come on when you flash it. (A voice of a robotic women after flashing means that Voodoo is flashing) Voodoo is the name of the Lagfix, which makes our systems run on ext4 instead of the slow RFS system stock that your wife had.

The best thing about Project-V ROM is that its made to be fast and for tweaking, that's why they say they're not competing with Cyanogenmod because it also has both speed and tweaking abilities. So don't worry if you think Project-V is all eye candy, because its both Speed, Stability, and Tweaks!

I flash this with CWM? I don't exactly recall where to get CWM or how to use it, but I'm sure I'll figure that out.
Installing this over stock will be a total data wipe, right? I should back up programs and program data with Titanium first and then restore after?
This does include the lagfix/file conversion? That just happens automatically when I flash this?

Let's say Samsung releases a 2.3 that's a solid ROM and I want to go back to stock. With this applied and whatever lagfix, file conversion that's been done, how hard would it be to get back to stock?

Yes, wouldn't be surprised at all if there's never an official 2.3 for this. Their 2.2 release was many months behind competing phones originally released around the same time. Still, just want to make sure I understand what I'm getting into here and how hard it would be to get back out. Could I easily get back to the stock froyo that it's on now, if I need to?
I've never did it , but I think u have to odin back to 2.1 stock and then ota (or keys) to 2.2 or whatever

Does the new market that came out this week work fine on this phone?
Before this market, I also had terrible problems updating apps. It was brutally slow and update all usually failed on most apps. I was very surprised that after installing the new market, I was able to do an update all on 20 apps with no problems at all.
My wife had pretty much given up on updating apps on the stock rom.
not yet tried ! But my gf had no problem at all with old and oldest market under tmob, now she's back in Italy, so I've unlocked the sim and still have no issues!
try a few different 1's and see which you like best
I like the bionix 1.3.1 with bali 1.8.7 uv kernel.
i'm not sure about the wifi calling as I dont use that feature.

As far as which rom you choose is your choice, I am running Toxic Smoke and a lot of people will agree its super quick and responsive but I support almost all roms, Devs here do great work on the vibrant and all should be recognized for it. I may have a solve for your low WiFi signal though..... Have you looked in to the Hardware GPS fix? It involves you opening up your phone and bending a small piece of copper, I did so and put a tiny sliver of credit card plastic under it to keep it from bending back down and now my GPS signal is ridiculous as compared to before. But as I read more there is another copper pin on the opposite side of the phone, that is your WIFI antenna. I then took my phone apart again and did the same thing to that pin and now My WIfI gets great signal. I guess it all depends on how tech savoy you are and how much you want to get into your phone. I know for how much it cost and how much I use my phone I wanted it working 100% so I took the extra time to do all of this and Im quite happy with my Vibrant now. But anyway my specs on my phone are,
ROM: ToxicMusixSmoke
Launcher: Golauncher Pro EX (Which is freaking awesome and free)
Kernal: Bali X (Will increase the responsiveness of your phone ff Overclocked to 1.2 using setCPU, you can download for free on XDA, cost 2.99 or something on the market, the dev offers it for free on here)
+ Hardware GPS Fix and S.gps.zip file for the drivers (You can also find this fine on the Hardware GPS fix post)
I hope this helps as my phone is very stable and I am totally satisfied with my phone as I was not so much at first. I also think with Golauncher you can get stock themes so your phone will look and act just like stock, but run 10000000000000 times better!

I like that this rom is so close to stock. If I didn't tell my wife, she wouldn't have even known I changed anything.
While I no longer use it myself, I found Zendroid 2.0.1 with Bali Kernel to be the simplest and easiest to use for a layman, like the average wife or girlfriend
It's extremely lightweight with no bloat to speak of, and battery life is phenomenal (no bloat, no 2g/3g bleeding).
@lexluthor you can use root explorer our similar app to copy the apk to the system/app folder.

In the next couple of days I'll be romming my Bell Atrix 4g into a custom rom. So far I've been considering the Alien rom but CM7 has been grabbing my attention on and off.
What I'm asking of the community is which rom are you guys using on your Atrix and why do you like it better over others?
I'd like to read and find out what other people have been using and how it's working for them.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Here is my personal opinion :
All roms I run with launcher pro
Fauxs kernal underclocked and undervolted
Alien:
I seem to always come back to it. I like all the features that are included in the theme. Wake on volume is a must. The theme is well done everything looks great if you like green.
Super stable everything works there is a good amount of blur so that the good stuff still works but it's not being held back.
Darkside:
Lovely red theme. Very extensive and very fast. But didn't seem as stable as alien. Nottach is very good with the mods and all work flawlessly.
I had it very deblurred and liked it but it seemed to drain battery very fast.
Homebase:
amazingly speedy I had too many problems so I left very quickly
CM7:
Insanely fast boot up. Ran smooth super customizable. And stable. Never had any real problems with it.
All the things I customized in this were already included in Darkside and alien. The reason I switch from thisis the lack of1080p video recording and the fact that it missed webtop and fp sensor.
Also it didn't seem. Like an Atrix anymore. Just another phone with CM7
Hope that helps you choose. I love all those roms. Even though i had problems with hb. Honestly just flash all of them and make your own personal decision

I'm leaning towards alien, but I'm mainly interested in keeping my fingerprint scanner to login with, I find it so much more convenient than anything else in the world.
I didn't mention it earlier but i tend to lean to themes with darker Colours.
Ill get mine flashed on the weekend and post screenies with the results.

Since rooting my Atrix I've tried all the more recent roms here. Of the motorblur roms I preferred Starwars - the light side. Super fast and no problems with it at all. The dev really seems to know what he's doing with scripts and things.
I then installed CM7 and have never looked back. The things that keep me on this rom are lightning fast speed, complete stability, 2-3 days battery life, dozens of themes available in market, and possibly most importantly to me the lack of 'stuff' clogging up the phone. The bloat in Motorblur is extensive, not just the apps you can see in the app drawer but the services and processes running in the background slowing down your phone. I used Autostarts to disable everything and it took ages going through it all. With cm7 there is hardly anything to disable.
The cm7 team have the fingerprint scanner working now and we're expecting an update very soon. I don't believe webtop is working though.
It will always be a matter of preference but I honestly can't think of any reason why anyone would stay on stock roms when cm7 has become as advanced as it is now. If you get bored with the looks you can just change the theme in Theme Chooser.
Enjoy testing the roms and I hope you find one you like and settle with!

Get the google apps zip file from the beta thread in developer section. you may need to goto settings accounts then google and set up sync for contacts.

So! My mother is on the lookout for a new phone, and this guy is cheap on Verizons site. Her phone that she has now, the LG Revolution, has constant freezing issues that irritate her beyond all belief, and because I know Android she dumps them all on me. I'm looking for some questions answered about this phone before I decide if this is the phone for her:
I have read on the Engadget Review that this phone freezes often. After custom ROMs are installed (I'm thinking MIUI), is this problem alleviated?
The LG Revolution has this weird issue where it's way too easy to scroll on it, which makes opening icons on any homescreen app drawer a huge PITA.
I basically need to be able to install ROM, drop it in her hands, and feel comfortable that she's not going to run into any hardware issues with the phone. This includes freezing because of memory issues.
Also, the drop of 4G isn't an issue, it's not in the area anyways.

This device pretty much poops on the revolution. That being said my device never froze when it was stock. We have alot of rom options from mtd based roms such as android 4.0 ICS v4, CM7.1 stable, Miui, Tsm pool party...also there are some really good TouchWiz Ginberbread roms such as, Superclean v.5, PWGB, Geewiz etc... I currently am bouncing between cm7 and ICS, but I cant say those are the best roms, they all are pretty good. You will just have to try them and see what your mother likes best.
No freezing problems here, although it does bug out on me with random pressings of the back key. Sometimes the phone will enter screen capture mode and take a screen shot every time I try to power it down. Removing the screencapture apk solves this.
Overall it has been a good phone and has served me well. Gotta love that Samsung display!
I havent had this device for that long, but I love it compared to by old Droid X, mostly due to nicer screen, better battery life, and easier hack-ability.
That being said, I personally am curious on what has been done, if anything, to the LG.

Are you running aftermarket software?
Some freezing issues can be solved by changing ram parameters, others by getting rid of certain bad apps.
I personally would like to see if your problems are actually solvable before getting a new and unfamiliar device, just for S&G's of course
It is rooted, and even after messing with the ram settings tweaked it still freezes. The other problem is that it dies way quickly, even with JuiceDefender and a calibrated battery. She's only had it for a week, so she's not yet settled on that one's ways.

I've had this phone for almost two years now and I've never had it freeze up on me. Install the SuperClean3 ROM. Solid ROM for that phone. I currently have ICS but for your mother's phone use SC3.

I'm also a fan of SuperClean. Great rom, with none of the AOSP issues that I find to be annoying enough to avoid. If you want to tweak it a bit, add KGB kernel and maybe a different launcher (I like OMFGB-Launcher) and Rom Toolbox will handle just about everything else. This is my setup, no major tweaks (lag fix, etc) other than zram and 1.2 gHz overclock. Fast and stable.
I couldn't find an answer to this after searching, and I really wasn't sure which is better, so I'm just going to ask.

You can not go wrong with either one. Both are great and are solid daily drivers. If you need HDMI then eclipse is for you. Cm7 is blazing fast and has so many options for themes and the theme Chooser. But eclipse also has great themer's as well. I would recommended having nano back up of each and go back and forth and see what fits you best. But you will really enjoy both.

HMDI I've never even used, and don't plan on it. Many things people have a "problem" with are things that I don't use, such as HDMI, GPS (seldomly use), etc.

What I did is run one for a few weeks and get it running how I like. Then nano back up and then try another for a few weeks. Get it like you want and do another back up. At one time point I had several roms backed up. Now I stick with eclipse and cm7. If you have never used cm7 it is something you should run at some point. It is blazing fast and you can customize everything. It will take you weeks to figure out all the settings.
even though I run CM7 now, I would say eclipse is an overall "better" rom in terms of supporting all the phone's features and being stable, like rock solid stable (was more stable than stock motoblur, and a bazillion times faster)
I would definitely call CM7 a beta, it has bugs, you learn to live with them.
My favorite overall so far was eclipse 1.3rc2

I've been on both ROMs recently and I would have to say that they are both superior to any thing else out there. I'm on the latest ROM for eclipse and all I can say is that this is fast... very fast on the DX2. You can't go wrong with either ROM, it comes down to HDMI support and then your preference.
CM7 definitely fastest but went back to eclipse for hdmi, stability and nuance voice control. Still have some problems with eclipse but allot less than cm7. One drawback of eclipse is 2.3.5 kernel, so when nandroiding have to sbf to switch roms.

I use eclipse 2.1 on my X2. I had previously use CM7 for a month before switching. Yes CM7 is much faster, but Eclipse is more stable and has less bugs.
It's all about personal preference.

+100!! I think this is the best option. Try them both out, and back them up. I am running CM7 and love it. Yes, it's lightning fast, but that isn't even my favorite feature. I prefer its customization overall. It has bugs, as a beta will, but I haven't experienced any that are deal breakers for me.

Right now I'm running Eclipse 2.1 (I previously had Eclipse 2.0.2). From what I've seen so far I can notice a speed improvement overall, some updates and GREAT stability; much better than even the stock.
Later on I'll try out CM7, but I'm just worried about all the bugs it has... I'm sure it's nothing, but I'd rather have slightly less performance and stability. Either way, I'm still going to try it out sometime soon. Thanks again for all your feedback.
Also, I'm not into nandroid backups at all.. or any backups. I'd rather do a clean slate EVERY SINGE TIME. I don't have a ton of apps, so I can get it all back, along with my settings very easily. Just and FYI for you all.
EDIT: Also, just to clarify things - along with give people other information; I will be writing a FULL review of each ROM. Note that many of this will contain personal opinions and such, but it will greatly help people overall with info about them.

I felt the same way about sbf and re root not a huge deal but yes extra time. I heard people had luck with 2.04 on 2.3.4. I had to try and all was working well. Have not tried that with 2.1 but do a nano back up first just in case and remember it is not recommended but it has worked for quite a few people just not sure for 2.1.
Miui works on 235/412 and I nanded to cm but did not stay long but wifi worked.
