I used to use Handcent quite some time ago but found out that it was causing some problems with people receiving my messages and pictures. In addition, it started hanging and would generally slow down. Lastly I was told that it does not necessarily play nice with some other applications, namely LightFlow.
When I eventually put Eclipse on my DX2, I simply did not re-download Handcent and was just using the stock SMS until today, using CM7 and still, the stock SMS.
What does everyone else use, are there any decent alternatives to the stock SMS and if so, what makes it a better alternative?
All I've ever used is handcent, seems to be working nice for me, never used liteflow though.

I'm a huge fan of chompSMS. I've tried Handcent and GoSMS, but I always end up coming back to chomp. The only thing I wish they would add is the ability to multi-select message threads to delete, instead of having to do it one by one or deleting them all at once. I emailed them and suggested that and they responded that it was planned for an upcoming update, so maybe I'll get my wish.
I use GOsms. Works great for me.

I have used Metro Messaging Beta for a while. It was when I was going through my WP7 phase. lol. I actually liked it though. It didnt have any cool features (it was actually very limited) but with how simple it was, it was nice to use. I have recently just gone back to the stock sms app though. I also use SMS Popup so when I get a message, I dont even have to open the sms app.
I too, use GOsms. I like the customization and different themes it offers.
Just make sure to manually go into stock notifications and disable. Other wise you will get multi notifications at some point. It will ask you at setup to disable, but for some reason you will still have to manual disable through stock app.
You could always give it a go!

+ 1, exactly what I was going to say. Love the customization.

I like the customization of Handcent better, can change a lot of things for individual contacts in handcent.
I just delete the SMS/mms apk in every ROM and put handcent in system/app

So I guess it's +++++++1 for GO SMS. I use GO SMS on mine.
Ciao!
GoSMS here BUT the MMS sending on it is whack. I have it set up for 1.2 MB and preserve image resolution yet when I send a pic it'll degrade the picture image. This is for pics under 1.2MBs...
Any one use a different phone/call app besides the stock one?

GO SMS is what I use, I like how it pops up a window without you having to swipe notifications, and the overall customizability of it. As Elite49 said, you cant go over 1.2mb in size but it just let it shrink my photos to fit and it works just fine. Be sure to get all the plug in for it too, there are tons of themes and emotocons etc...

Does yours degrade the pics when their not over 1.2MB? I find it extremely annoying seeing a pic thats under that somehow look like crap when I go to send it.
Another vote for GO SMS here!

touchpal contacts. for answer to above q. and go sms is by far the best sms app out there

Never had a reason to try anything but Gosms, it works, and you can make it look however you want. all i plan to ever use atm
Go sms is kinda buggy at times... but its the best I've encountered. I hate stock and am looking for something with a few more features... mainly the pop-up. And I've tried hancent in the past, not too much of a fan... anyone for any other suggestions?
Thanks!
I second go sms. I've used hand sent. But like go sms the best

Try Pansi SMS... It's the best, and believe me, I've tried them all.
using go sms pro here and the customization of it is endless.
go sms for me. personally, i like simple yet select features. a must-have is the popup-quick reply whenever texts are received, yet keep the simplistic/minimalistic design of the UI of the app.
but also cool since it can go from simple to super-customizable-high-tech feature messaging app. one stop, for all types of users = gosms.
I know you said you dislike the stock app but if you are looking for pop up notifications download and apply called SMS POPUP it works like a charm. Has some decent features

I've tried go sms and yeah it is a little buggy at times. Annoyed me enough to stop using it. I personally am on MIUI so I use the stock one which is very good.
A good nonstock messaging app i've used is messaging metro beta
market.android.com/details?id=com.zapnus.messaging&hl=en
You have to donate to get features but I'm a sucker for WP7 interface apps like Ubermusic. Messaging Metro is my favorite as of now (although not as complete as go sms).
I just tried Pansi and really like it. Thanks for the tip. Uses a bit more memory than I like but love the costumizations.

I'll give pansi a try. Thanks
Try chomp. Its been my favorite so far.

try text plus, including free calling with 3g ang wifi
I'm currently enjoying pansi.

Liking Pansi but cannot get it to vibrate on new texts. Have you guys been able to do that? Any tips would be appreciated.
Edit: Figured it out, thanks

For pop ups I use SMS Popup. Gonna try Go SMS though. Tried it awhile back, but never got too into it. Might play with it a little more and try to get it the way I want it.
didn't care much for pansi. I remember chimp from way back. I'll revisit it and see whats changed. hope its better than I remember.
Well, after using Pansi over the weekend and liking the configurability of it, it has a few things that I wasn't crazy about. I am looking at ChompSMS now. Will try it for a few days and then decide.
Thanks for your suggestions here.

No worries bud. I've tried them all and it seems like so far (based on the last 4-5 days) Chomp is where it is at.
Handcent SMS here. I has pop-ups as well. Very easy to use.
Been using Chomp here for awhile now. Love it. Does exactly what I need.
go sms updated their app today. maybe it'll fix your bugs.
Besides gosms what are other good ones ? I'm very picky. i hate ugly icons on my homescreen lol. I'm currently using handcent. It's ok but I was wondering if they're others that I don't know about

I used ChompSMS forever on the G1 and refused to use handcent until Chomp had a bad update, and I've been using handcent ever since. Oh, and I kept getting replacement Mytouch4G's and it was a pain to transfer my purchase (it has ads but you can post to remove them).

I used chomp on my G2. I don't really like how it looks all together. Any one know of a less popular one ? Maybe ics style ?
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using XDA
I've been using GOSMS, its working for me flawlessly. No double texts issue like there was in Handcent. But that's just my preference.
Handcent is the only SMS app I use.
Thanks for the input guys. I never really.use alternative sms apps. It's actually been years since I have. I thought maybe something New would have came out. I'm going.to try go sms and search some themes
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using XDA
i like Go simply because I can schedule texts to send at a later time which is a really helpful way to remind people something you will forget to remind them of later
Handcent has that same feature.
never used chomp, used gosms on my old milestone because it was lighter on resources, and handcent on my other androids. handcent ftw
I'm glad I'm it the one using handcent lol, I went to check out go sms and wow that icon is HORRID!!! Do not want that thing on my homescreen =\ lol

When I first got an Android phone I tried Chomp & Handcent and both were ugly and nothing I was looking for. Found GoSMS and been using it ever since.
Love it, lots of good themes plus you can make your own.
Which one do you prefer and why?
I was a long time GO SMS user but it wasnt acting right lately. Unsent message and when i would click on someones thread it would take me to someone else. Had to kill the app for it to fix. I just started using Chomp and it hasnt bugged out yet. Except for the emoji plug in not working right but i have that on the keyboard so whatever. It looks alot nicer also.
So far, I'm liking Go SMS but I wish there were more widget options than just two. I miss the bigger, list-style widget from the stock Sense messaging app.
I use handcent sms. I've been using it for 2 years since I bought my original evo 4g. Tried go sms amd I liked some of the themes but handcent is nice in my opionion. It's easier to see who is who in a conversation. Shows a pic next to the text.

Go SMS now has pics too.
Handcent, because for incoming SMS, I can see both "sent time" and "arrived time", which GoSMS and almost all others lack.
But I'm now using HTC Sense SMS, as it's acceptable.
Chomp SMS, Handcent, or GO?
I started with Handcent on my htc hero a long time ago, but then I tried GO and I really liked the theme options. Fast forward to now, GO takes up a lot of memory and it feels heavy. I haven't used chomp, but i heard that it doesnt support group messages?
Opinions?
None of the above... Go Apps have always had memory issues as well as privacy concerns and the other 2 arent all that great. Your better off staying stock. You can get popup notification apps if that's what your looking for.

Personally, I like handcent, the stock app might be a little lighter, but I like the feel of handcent more.

+1 for Handcent. I hate apps that use a white background, and all the inverted Messages apps I've tried break the ability to send/receive mms.

Long time handcent user. Recently just tried Chomp and its nice and speedy. Plus handcent was sending double texts.
Htc app is just sooooo sllloooowww.

Yeah, handcent with the darkness them and a few customizations is the s***. Lol. Always treated me good.
Plus I like their dev team, they seem pretty on top of things.

I've tried Go, Handcent, Chomp and Pansy. None have been as responsive as the stock app for me. They all feel sluggish. And I really wanted them to be better, I hoped they would be. But stock is it for me.
If aesthetics are more important to you, then try Handcent. And if the stock app is slow for some reason, I'd check your General message settings and try enabling auto-deleting messages. Use SMSBackup+ and they'll be backed up to your Gmail account if you ever need them again.

Well said, I'd prefer aesthetics over performance(within reason of course).
There aren't that many reputable ones, I say the OP should go try them all!
