im currently using 2.3.3 Stock rom...im with att...does anyone know if charges are applied for using the portable wifi and/or usb tethering features?
Tethering uses your mobile's data plan as your internet connection.
If your data plan is pay-by-usage method it'll cost you bombs.
the cost is same as browsing with phone.
i have unlimited data so hopefully att wont bomb my phone bill...lol...Thank both of you for the info
Tethering works perfect on my Nexus 4 but not my HTC One..they are blocking it on the one...any work arounds?

Works fine on my One with stock TMO ROM.
It depends on your plan. The new standard (500 mb), 2Gb, and 4Gb include tethering (mobile hotspot). The new unlimited plan never includes tethering. On the older classic plans it was a separate option for most people.
Is T-Mobile hotspot included in your plan?
First unlock and root.
Second, flash a kernel if you want to stay stock (which I prefer). I recommend this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255900
or
Flash a custom rom
Finally, install this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Change device-profile to "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0).
That's it! You should be good to go.

If you're on the new unlimited you get 500MB of tethering.

Huh. The TMO rep we bought from when we changed the plan said there was no tethering. But I believe you...
Yeah I dont have tethering in my plan...but it works with my Nexus 4 with no problems
I have the unlimited data $30 plan and I got it to work on ARHD ROM.

To actually get tethering with the unlimited data they told me you have to be on the "simple choice" plans, which for me would be around an extra $40 a month. So yeah, I'll keep my old 1000 minute value plan and $5 extra lines.
The default apn has some sort of hidden alternative route for the stock tethering. I don't know a lot about apns, but you can just create another apn called Tethering that has the same info as the default apn (fast.tmobile.com and the mmsc server are the only things you actually need to enter) and use that, at least on international ROMs. The stock ROM may have some additional links back to pcweb as well; in the past I know this has been in the csc xml and stuff too.

From T-Mobile Site:
Includes up to 500 MB of high-speed data on T-Mobile's network for no extra charge. Smartphone Mobile HotSpot service included. Speeds slowed up to 2G speeds after 500 MB.
They detect the type of system your using once you start tethering. Thus why any device running aosp or aokp can tether

They need to put the right feature on your plan. At launch there was an unlim plan with a 500MB separate add on feature. As of a few days ago T-Mobile bundled them together to prevent further confusion. If yours doesn't work double check your plan.
You can actually now add more tethering to your unlimited 4g plan than the 500mb. It is $10 per 2gb. So for extra $10 you have 2.5gb of tethering. $20 you have 4.5gb and so on all the way up to 12.5gb max

No, that is the basic internet included with all plans.
The unlimited high speed 4G plan does not include tethering, so far as I know.

Interesting. So you can have all the high speed you want, but have to pay for tethering. That makes sense.

The new unlimited $70 plan has 500MB tethering:
Adds Unlimited Nationwide 4G data on T-Mobile's network. Includes up to 500 MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service
The $30 5GB plan doesn't include tethering

Side note.... The tethering that comes with or is added to the unlimited 4g plans does not get throttled at the limit... It turns off

The only options offered to us under the new plan were basic, 2Gb, 4Gb, and unlimited. The 5Gb plan was available on our former "classic" plan.
Tethering on the unlimited $30 with out the tether included.
HTC One
I had the same problem. Went from a Gnex working perfectly to the One and everything is being blocked. I'm on the $70 unlimited prepaid plan and they won't even let me pay for tethering. Currently using a USB tether app called Klink (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.faveset.klink_blue). It's the only app I found that I could get working. Of course, once I decide to root and go with a custom ROM, wifi tethering will be a breeze again.

Not so, hidden tether APN is in those too.

Here is an interesting question, I have an old-school T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web+Unlimited Messages ($34.00/mo) data plan grandfathered in from way back when I had my G1. From what I gather, it's a 5GB soft cap. Tethering has always worked perfectly both on stock (vanilla) phones. I'm seriously thinking of pulling the trigger and getting a One. If I keep my data plan, will I still get tethering ("unlimited"), or will I get the standard 500mb? If I upgrade to the 6GB-8GB Highspeed Data plan, what do I get for tethering? BTW: I'm not on a Pre-Paid plan.
We have a problem on the SGP621 4G/LTE models on T-Mobile because there is no data allow by t-mo:crying:. so my tepm solution is to get a mobile hotspot it's not the same but at list is something. I pay $20 bucks for 3GB that's what I was paying for unlimited on my data plan but there was no other option. now my question is. is there an app that can let me monitor my hotspot usage so I can keep track of my data. I will appreciate it if anybody knows of such app thanks
I rooted my phone last week in hopes that I could get 4g WiFi tethering. I have not found any mods/apps/hacks that allow me to get 4g speeds.
I still have a promotional plan that gives me 3 lines of unlimited everything for $100 a month with the only 2 restrictions (that I know of and care about) are WiFi tether at 3g and SD video streaming. To get these 2 features I would have to go to one of their new plans which would cost me about an extra $40 a month.
I have already tried several options to no avail: foxfi, adding new APN with .dun, and adding an edit to buildprop for net.tethering.noprovisioning=true. (bonus thanks if I could force HD video streaming also)
Any help would be appreciated.
Has anyone been able to find a work around for this?
you're paying for wifi 3g tether, and thats what you're getting; if you want something different, then pay for it, instead of trying to steal service you haven't paid for
Jp quick question...on your unlimited account do they cap your data to say 50g? I've had unlimited on my line for about 3 years now and never changed my plan. Back when i first got the plan i used to rack up 100g a month watching you tube and such with no problem, now they cap me to 50g. They basically changed my plan for me. Sorry for the off topic. As for tethering i just got my Note 8 yesterday so I'll start messing around this weekend and see if any of the old hacks work.
Update, I called yesterday and I was supposed to have the 4g tethering and HD video included on my line but it wasn't added on when they upgraded my plan, they added it at no charge. Apparently all my other lines already had the T-Mobile ONE Plus, but my line only had the T-Mobile ONE. They changed that for me and now I have 10gb native WiFi at 4g. And thank you for your suggestion @wase4711 but I root my phone to be able to take advantage of features that were not necessarily intended for specific devices. I have been rooting my devices since the original Droid came out.
@sshafranko, I rarely use more than 10gb a month per line, so I honestly do not know if they throttle after 50. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
They only throttle in congested areas like Houston or Atlanta. When I was visiting my g'ma in Houston, i got throttled, but when i got back to my hometown, it was back to being quick. It all just depends on how many people is connected to that tower at that point in time i guess. :/
First in order to have true Unlimited 4G/LTE data usage with your "Smartphone" device you would need to have one of the old Unlimited plans.
Note: No need to root for unlimited high speed tethering with one of the old unlimited plans.
For unlimited high speed tethering with the old Unlimited plans:
Use FoxFi with the FoxFi Key. You can do either WiFi or USB. With USB make sure you install FoxFi within your computer. Also make sure you click on "Hide Tether Usage" on both WiFi and USB modes.
If this doesn't work, then it is your newer "Unlimited" data plan that is the problem. Can't be solved by rooting.
Tethering software hides your tethering usage by making it look like "Smartphone" data usage. Tethering software doesn't hide the data usage itself. The data usage will still be logged by your carrier, like T-Mobile as "Smartphone" high speed when you use the tethering software to "hide" the data. Tethering software will just use up your monthly "Smartphone" high speed data usage. After that you are at the mercy of the carrier to not throttle you. So the tethering software and rooting isn't going to solve the newer "unlimited" data plans.
Remember that the newer "Unlimited" data plans are unlimited data usage, but NOT unlimited 4G/LTE data usage.

The problem with what you are saying is:
That is they (T-Mobile) are not offering 4G/LTE Unlimited data plans or large 4G/LTE data usage plans anymore. In fact no one (no carrier) is currently offering unlimited 4G/LTE data plans or large 4G/LTE data usage plans anymore. When I say large 4G/LTE data usage I am looking at what I use like around 250Gb to 500Gb of 4G/LTE data usage per month.
At the end:
You can't pay for something that isn't being offered anymore.
That is the rub!

On the old 4G/LTE unlimited plans they only cap you if they really need to due to really bad congested services or for emergency services. Which means rarely if ever.
On the new unlimited plan you will be capped before the old unlimited plans will.
The reason for this is the old 4G/LTE unlimited plans is truly unlimited 4G/LTE data services (unless extreme congested services or for emergency services needs the cellular services). While the new "Unlimited" plan is unlimited data services, but NOT truly unlimited 4G/LTE.
This is my first post and I'm not sure if I'm even in the right place or not but here goes.
I have an old SM-G965U1 and for at least the last 2 years I've been using the hotspot as my primary home internet connection. I have absolutely no idea how but using the hotspot on that phone (and only that phone) I'm able to use an unlimited amount of hotspot data without the speeds ever being throttled. I was under the impression for a long time that it had something to do with my plan. It had the $65/month unlimited prepaid plan when it was still called "GoPhone" so I just assumed that since I always renewed the same plan even after they switched to calling it "ATT Prepaid" that the unlimited hotspot service was somehow grandfathered in.
But it turns out that regardless of what Sim card I put into the phone as long as it's got a plan that has hotspot available (even if it's already reached the hotspot data limit) and the plan is active it will provide unlimited hotspot.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and/or how to replicate the results? I can't find much info on this subject and most of the info I've found is specific to other devices.
