[Q] Completely disable 3D? - HTC EVO 3D

Is there a way to completely disable/power-off the 3D functionality of the Evo 3D, so that we can lose the silly power-draining gimmick and reap the benefits of the huge battery in this phone?
In light of the AT&T buyout I'm considering switching to Sprint and I want something with a big screen...

Shut your face

Well, that was completely useless.
All the reviews of the EVO 3D so far have commented on battery life being relatively unimpressive. Considering the sheer size of the battery used in this device, one would think that preventing the 3D-whatever from functioning or even loading at all would aid in extending the battery life.
Though, perhaps this is impossible and all LCDs with parallax barriers simply use more power even displaying 2D images...

Just don't use the 3d features... Not sure what else to say.

There's not much any of us can do when it comes to your request. However, as our development progresses, an option should present itself.

Hopefully so. Sprint service is very good where I live, and with the blue deathstar threatening to swallow up T-Mobile I'm inclined to switch over.
Shame the Nexus S 4G has signal issues, else I'd be inclined to switch over right away (yeah, I know it's "old" but it has AOSP Android right out of the box).

I still don't understand why you can't just refrain from using the 3d.

Buy a evo 4g..... Or don't use 3d apps.... Or view 3d videos or pictures.

Because with a battery that huge, the thing shouldn't die so fast. Something about the 3D gimmick is eating battery even when turned off. Could be that the parallax barrier LCD just uses more power.
And the old Evo is a downgrade from my current device. Why would I want that? I want something better, or at least a sidegrade. Not a downgrade.

I don't think the 3d is killing ur battery when ur not using it, at least not that u would ever notice. My battery life on my 3d is actually better than what it was on the og evo. If anything u have to consider that the qhd screen, dual core CPU, 1gb RAM, etc.....uses more power too.

I highly doubt that the parallax barrier is using battery when its not turned on. That is like saying the flash is using power when its not on.

What do you consider to be fast? My phone went 18 hrs between charges on most days (pre-root).

Making the switch to resound possibly

Current sprint user here using the photon 4g. Not a bad phone by any means but Sprint coverage sucks. I'm not interested in the galaxy nexus as every Samsung phone I've ever owned has had major issues. I see the threads in the nexus forum. And see the nexus still suffers from poor GPS and android is bugs.
The only other phone Verizon has I'd consider is the razr Mainly because I have the photon and they are somewhat similar software and hardware wise. But I listen to music a lot on my phone and the resound just seems like a good choice.
Few questions, hows the GPS? Hows the performance? Any lag on sense? Speakerpbone loud?? I had a EVO 3d aand returned it the day the photon came out. It had a horrible camera, GPS was spotty, speaker phone wasn't loud at all and sense just lagged from time to time.
I have had great success from HTC in the past except for the EVO 3d....
So help me make the jump.lol

Razr is a POS, lol.
On a serious note, the Rezound is a solid choice if you are coming to Verizon. No one has stated any issues with GPS accept the device has gotten hot for some users. Performance is on par for best device w/o perm root. The speakerphone is decently loud. It is as loud as my X2 was at least.
+1
Agreed ... I have done my fair share of reading these forums and GPS lock and Speaker Volume are not on the complaint list. Heat if you get a bad unit and possible dead pixels (which would the same for every phone) are the common complaints.
Razr screen.. OMFG HORRIBLE Pentile!!
If you go to a Verizon Store to get the Rezound make sure you stay there if you can and test it out... Like that if any of the common issues show up your right there for a replacement.
Sense runs perfectly no lag (that've noticed)
I don't use the camera but other Rezound users love it
GPS locks in pretty fast

sent from my sexy HTC Rezound. Bata ba ba bum, Im loving it.
I'm loving mine. It's everything I could want in a phone. GPS locks on faster than my droid charge. I do wish the speakerphone speaker was a little louder. Other than that I really like the phone.
I've never had a sence phone, always had touch wiz, so I'm actually enjoying my lag free sence.

Question about display drivers

I'm really debating switching to the Amaze from the GS2 due to the horrible screen issue the Qualcomm S2 has due to the video drivers being emulated from the Exynos version. Im guessing the Amaze's drivers are made for it right?
Other than that, the things that concern me about the Amaze are the light bleed from the capacitive buttons and random reboots/shutdowns. I know the button issue can be resolved by turning them off, but wouldn't it be hard to see/use them in the dark? How prominent are the shutdowns/reboots? Anything else I should be concerned about? I'm coming from a G1 so I keep my phones awhile
Edit: Just realized there is no S-OFF either. What limitations does this produce compared to a device with S-OFF?

I've never had a reboot or bootloop. Just make sure you read and follow instructions. Light bleed apparently varies from device to device. Mine is noticeable but only on dark background and I actually think it looks cool. Call me weird :/ I've never had an issue really, other than the backcover and case preventing me to get a great WiFi signal. I haven't tried the foil trick. Also, the back cover makes a plastic creeking noise, but a thin folded piece of paper back there fixes it. Sounds kind of ghetto for a high end phone, but the camera and display are great in my opinion and the radio gets great service. There are some good ROMs and its a fast sexy phone. I like it.

had an s2 as well, had the bad screen and sent it back. jumped ship to the amaze and build wise, i think its a better crafted device. had to return 2 of em, but my 3rd one is on point. havent used it enough to give a better opinion, but so far i like it alot better. go for it
My wife has the gs2 and I can't stand that thing. Crappy screen and touchwiz kill it for me. I love my amaze.

I came from the Gs2 about 2 weeks ago. And I have the light bleed but it's not terrible. Haven't had any random reboots or anything. Build quality is head over heels better than the gs2. Also firs in the pocket better. I love this phone and don't regret the switch one bit. Can't wait to root it andget to flashing.

You can always try a different launcher.
I think that for some custom roms (specifically xboarder56's) you can disable the 3D effects by a Tweaks app that comes pre-installed in the rom.

This device is more complicated than that.
However once you unlock your bootloader it's fairly simple.
I know NRGs Energy ROM also has the tweaks to disable the carousel and 3D widgets if you want. I actually think it's XBoarder's tweaks app just borrowed.
Like binary said, it's rather simple to unlock and root, just very time consuming on this device compared to many others. Binary put together great step by step instructions.

Everyone has a different opinion on battery life. I typically get anywhere from 16 to 28 hours of battery life depending on amount of use. Got the same on stock ROM with brightness turned all the way down.
If you like Aosp go with galaxy nexus. There is no telling when we will get Aosp Ics. If you prefer Sense though definitely go with the amaze. Its a great phone hardware wise! The real big difference is the software and camera. If the camera is a big thing for you maybe the amaze is the way to go. Its a much better camera.
Great phone, there are only two issues that my phone has:
+The capacitive lights bleed onto the main screen.
+The flash for the camera bleeds into the lens.
Besides that everything works perfectly!
Concerning battery: for me if my phone stays on standby it will last for days, but if i use it heavily it'll give me a good day's use out of it.

I was also torn between these two phones myself. I decided to settle with the Amaze due to the mediocre camera on the galaxy nexus, and also the lack of expandable memory (they seriously seemed to have pulled an Apple with this). The nexus does have the 720p screen (pentile though), but the Amaze offers the perfect blend of screen size and resolution. It seems like we do have a few hardworking devs, so it’s a matter of time before more jump ship to Amaze with more ROMs available.
One of the reasons I went with the Amaze was due to the back of the phone. I actually think hardware wise it is one of the nicest phones out there.
Like others mentioned, battery life just depends how you use it. I get between 8-14 hours depending on my day. That is quite a few 20 minute or so phone calls, texting a good amount, web browsing, g-talk quite a bit and a little BT streaming of music and movies. Streaming of the music and movies will really suck it down quick though. I know someone else who has a black Amaze and.gets 5 hours, but he is always downloading movies and streaming music.
It really is a great phone and it does have a good camera, just have to have decent lighting for a good picture.
Might run into a couple small issues like light bleeding into the screen from the soft keys lighting up. There are a couple apps out there to shut them off. I believe the G-Nex suffers from the same exact thing. That and the flash bleeding when taking a pic. I personally have yet to have that happen though. Seems common enough though.
Good luck! There are some good peeps on this board and especially in the Amaze section.

There's a thread somewhere on here about it, but the gist of it is that the dual flash isn't confined/separated enough from the lens so sometimes you get some light bleed on the bottom (or however you hold your phone while taking a pic).
Supposedly you can fix it with a tiny piece of electrical tape, it basically mimics the effect of putting the dual flash in a housing unit (like the sensation has). I haven't noticed it enough yet to do that, but it does bug me that HTC produced this phone without fixing that...haha

I'm already convinced the non-removable battery isn't going to be a problem, at least for me. I've been doing nothing but flashing, rebooting, flashing, rebooting all day and by this time, my E3D would have been down below 50% after that much rebooting and flashing. This ELTE (I guess that's what we're calling it) is sitting at 92% right now! The radio seems more efficient too because after driving around for an hour after I got the phone yesterday (driving in fringe areas), that used to eat a minimum of 20% off my E3D battery. This thing dropped I think 4%.

I'm starting to get more and more irritated with this phone. I sent my galaxy nexus back for this one and I am starting to regret it. picky are we? lol
here is the thing brother..... you gotta keep this in mind, when these devices are designed/programmed(but this has mostly to do with the programming aspect) the developers try to find a healthy balance between performance and battery efficiency. every now and then you may see it sputter ever so slightly, but it is intentionally designed that way. your other option is to have your GPU in overdrive every time you even breathe on your screen and suck your battery every time you send a text.
don't be so picky. you have a 400mHz GPU with multi-point rendering capability.... it's not the hardware brother....
Sense 4.0 lags sometimes, it sucks but I don't think we can totally eliminate it. I notice it on different occasions, usually when I wake the phone up or open the app drawer.

here is the thing brother..... you gotta keep this in mind, when these devices are designed/programmed(but this has mostly to do with the programming aspect) the developers try to find a healthy balance between performance and battery efficiency. every now and then you may see it sputter ever so slightly, but it is intentionally designed that way. your other option is to have your GPU in overdrive every time you even breathe on your screen and suck your battery every time you send a text.
don't be so picky. you have a 400mHz GPU with multi-point rendering capability.... it's not the hardware brother....

Not really trying to be picky man I just thought this phone was going to be better then the nexus.

you are basing "better" on blips in the user interface? lol come on maannn
and for the record... every nexus i have picked up was laggy as balls.... maybe that has something to do with the fact that it has the same GPU in it as the OG nexus
just sayin
i mean if it is TERRIBLY BAD then i would say it is the rom you are on, some misc tweak, maybe your 2d forced rendering isn't checked under the settings, who knows.... but i have had mine for a week now and have maybe seen it sputter like once. and i use it pretty heavily.
The EVO is better for some coming off different phones with completely different hardware. The evo 4g vs LTE is a no brainer. LTE wins. The nexus on the otherhand has similar specs as the EVO. (Dual core, ics, screen resolution?) Anyways you get the point. Get a phone based on personal preference. Not because its "the next big thing" the nexus is a great phone for some. Definetly not for me. Hence the reason why I got the LTE rather than the ole so stunning S3 or nexus..
hardware is beyond than extraordinary. Root the beast and unleash its full potential (when the proper Roms are fully functional). Or wait out official HTC updates.. my 2 cents

Sense 4.0 lags sometimes, it sucks but I don't think we can totally eliminate it. I notice it on different occasions, usually when I wake the phone up or open the app drawer.

What's not better?
better screen
faster proc and gpu
better camera
and more, but that's it for now.
Maybe you're just having a buyer's remorse cause you didn't go with the GS3 and convincing yourself the Evo is not good enough.
Two top phones right now for sprint is Evo LTE and GS3, everything else falls short.
The only stuttering or lag I get is sometimes on my lockscreen. I am using the weather lockscreen and the weather will stutter it's way in instead of being fluid. I think it is just the phone coming out of sleep.

I know apex is nice, but it's not all that ground breaking. It's the same as LP and ADW for the most part.
I prefer sense widgets and they way they all tie together.. Like missed calls going directly to my task widget and such. It's a trade off I kmow

Lol thanks for all the feedback guys and for not completely criticizing me. I never wanted the S3 to begin with. But I will agree with some things that were said about sense being a little buggy and what not. And I didn't get this phone because it was the next big thing. I got it because my nexus would get really hot when I was using it and the battery life was bad.

I’ve actually noticed this as well and I agree that it’s a little annoying. When scrolling in pretty much any app, my finger will move about 0.2” before the screen reacts. Once it realizes that my finger is on there, there is no problem tracking.
I downloaded Touch Test from the market and confirmed that this is not a hardware issue. In that app, the moment my finger touches the display, it begins tracking. The lock ring also moves immediately on the lock screen, so it must be something in certain apps.
I have noticed lag in the browser when scrolling when I have flash enabled. I noticed on my Galaxy S2 that when I would scroll down a web page with flash content, any flash content that is active continues to to be active while scrolling and it was VERY smooth. On the EVO LTE however, anything active flash content will become inactive. The lag I have experienced seems to be when the Evo takes a split second to "pause" any active flash before it begins scrolling. The more flash on a page, the more lag I experience. I've simply turned off my flash player. It's annoying to have to do that, but I have come to terms with it.

A decent connection and Chrome (updated) work well with no lag (that I can see or tell).

I'm definitely kinda bummed out on the performance of this phone. it started off great, but lately its been quite bad. Lag when I unlock the phone... Lag when I open the messaging app... Lag when I open and use the browser.. It's terrible. I've come to expect more from this generation of cpu from qualcomm but it's turning out to be the same ol ****
