I'm using a Vibrant on a tmobile network. For some reason today my 3g decided not to work. So i went on the Tmobile website and it told me that i needed a 4G plan for my vibrant. i chose the 30 dollars unlimited 3g but i also want texting. on the messing page they have:

What are the differences? lol.
Its not worth it right now chances of u even getting 4g in your area r slim. Besides the vibrabt isnt even set up for it. The tethering plan will boost your signal and think its only 15 a month

How is the tethering plan will boost your signal?
To the OP, did you go over 5GB of data in your billing cycle? Did you use your phone as a tether?

Anyways, the so-called 4g does make a dramatic difference even with the Vibrant. Where I live, I went from around 1mbps down to 3-5mbps down (speed based on speedtest.net app). My ripoff p.o.s. ISP limits my speed to only 3mbps because I don't pay an extra 15-30 dollars a month. Recently I was downloading a large file, and out of curiosity I switched in the middle of downloading from my local ISP to tethering my phone via wifi. The download speed was around 1.66 times faster, peaking at speeds almost twice as fast. In other words, the speedtest.net results, which suggest hspa+ on my Vibrant is significantly faster than my 3mbps ISP, were validated.
Secondly, data plans cost the same regardless if you have access to hspa+ or not.

Well the 4G plan and the older one is currently the same price. I got unlimited because I will tether. i dont think i need the tethering plan because i have the wifi tethering thing on my vibrant.
The tether plan also boost your 3g

I think the $10 text plan is only applicable for those who also have the unlimited android plan. I asked my t-mobile dealer about my text plan (after my added an unlimited android plan) and he reduced my monthly text rate (unlimited at $15 to $10).
I'm not 100% sure though

Dude seriously? Did you try rebooting your phone? You don't need to upgrade to any plan to continue using 3g. There's no such thing as a "4g plan" that makes your vibrants data speeds any faster. The dude's posting here are blowing smoke up your ass. My vibrant is using the $24 grandfathered plan (4G didnt exist then) and I've been hitting 5Mb's down and 1.5 up. You will see increased data speeds if your local network has been upgraded but that's it. If you lost 3G signal is could be because of weather or service issues in your area or your phone just needs to be restarted. Call t-mo back and switch back to your previous plan if it worked better for you financially. Once again, you will not see a speed boost from any plans that t-mo offers.

I am just trying to figure out if it is my phones fault or just the general sprint's coverage that is lacking in speed in my area. Using a speedtest, I get speeds as low as 100kbps to as high as 800kbps, never past 1mb. I even tried performing the test not only at my house, but at other places where I work and I never had it perform faster than 1mbps.
Should I go to a sprint store and ask them about this situation?
my phone is rooted and has a custom rom so maybe it's not a good idea, unless I return it to stock?
Find someone else with a sprint phone and run a test side by side. That'll tell you if its your phone or not.
If I went to the sprint store, and they accidentally saw that I am rooted or flashed a custom rom would they do anything?
I would rather just go to a store and talk to the rep directly, maybe compare speeds with whoever works there.

Those speeds are normal for Sprint's lackluster 3G network; where I work I get full bars and my 3G speeds rarely exceed 600-700 KB/s, 4G on the other hand averages 6MB/s.
when I move back to college, I will have to test out 4g because it is covered in the location of my school.
Yea you should be happy with .8 mbs..u can do just about anything with that speed..I don't expect more more really..best I've gotten is about 1.6 mbs on 3g
My 3G speeds are garbage wherever I go. I can't use my phone unless im on Wi-Fi or 4G. Tired of this crap... -_-

well .8 is the best i can get. usually it's around 300kbps. it makes me jealous when my friends verizon or att data speeds exceed 1mb.
I have had just over 1 a few times when testing near my apartment. I am close to down town dallas and very close to a tower.
I am sure it has to do with location, loading that sort of thing. I am sure my tower has been suped up to handle the daily work load of all the people in and around down town dallas. But at night when the usage is a lot lower the speeds definately go up.
Dont get me wrong, i have also had speed tests on the same tower being 200k down and 75k up. Then 9 or 10 hours later its sky high.
Get an Airave,,never see less than 1600kbps on it since I got it,,turn it off,,I can't call or use data,,7 miles from tower

You can't carry an airrave around with you everywhere you go. Plus you need WiFi for it to work, so why not just connect to WiFi if your at home? You'll get alot more than 1600kbps. Were talking about the extremely poor 3g speeds without the use of an airrave/wifi.
What i don't understand is how i can have like 4-5 bars and only get 20-80kpbs.

Should have just kept T-MO. But the allure of 3D got me..
My parents use sprint, i use Verizon..
and Ive also noticed their speeds to be pathetically slow.

1) At home when I can always use Wi-Fi
2) At school when I don't need 3G for much anyway
If the service in your area isn't enough for you, then you should switch to another carrier. I wish I could switch to Verizon, but they're more expensive and don't have unlimited data.

Come Feb if u r getting a discount on a family line u'll be able too! Check this forum for the topic - sprint is nickel and Diming us and u'll see what I mean. I use to have ur speeds but I found the topic about getting ur msl and speeding up ur Internet and now I get around 1400 kps or so!

You sure its not your phone ? I had the worst speed ever on my first EVO 3d did a few test and confirmed it was hardware took it to sprint they confirmed it. New one ran like a champ hauled ass.

4 people in my car...
2 with verizon phones, and 2 with sprint phones..
Drive 30 minutes away to some nice hiking trails...
Before we can even get there..
Both sprint phones have ZERO bars, and a phone call or text cannot be accomplished.
Yet, both verizon phones stay connected without an issue, and keep all bars. lol

Have you done the sprint proxy mod which changes the rtsp and http stuff I tried that recently and it gave me worse speeds than what I had before. Check those.

I feel your pain Bro. I get weak data all over. Except the most random places I get great signal. But work is meager and home is ok, but I use wifi all the time.

I'm in the East bay Area and its just like that out here Bro. I stay mostly because of M2M minutes and the fact that I have 6 lines on my family plan. I just wish data was better. At my office I am all excited if I hit 300kb, usually in the 100 range. At home I hit like 600-700, but use wifi so it;s a moot point. In the middle of my kids soccer field....1.7mb...seriously...WTF? lol

So the RTSP and HTTP changing them to 0 and 0.0.0.0 gave you worse speeds?
Sprint blows, i have the same issues in michigan with full bars. They are over congested in my area and don't seem to be in any rush to expand thier 3g network(or introduce 4g). At my other house i get low to average speeds though, also with full bars. IMO, you should never see speeds lower than 800 kbps with 3g coverage. Unfortunately, at my house on the east side of Michigan, the data is frequently between 400-800 kbps, though that is still much higher than the speeds i get when im at my apartment on the west side of Michigan.
keep in mind that the competition is almost always pulling 1500-2500 kbps in areas like mine.

sprint is the only company where I can get the best service at my place. It all depends on locations you can have them but like a router for 4g 3g service in your house.
LOL at least you get "decent" speeds. On my old TP2 I was getting 600 kb now with the 3D I can't get past 32 kb on 3g. If it wasn't for Wimax near me I would be with big red.....sero plan helps. Seems like I got a fancy paper weight when I'm not in a WiMAX area...... Unlimited data so slow you can't use it.
I found a tower in San Antonio that has 4G LTE broadcasting right now and played on it a bit yesterday. I was driving around trying to find the actual tower and would drive in and out of range. While testing 4G with speedtest or the browser it would freeze when losing 4G and reverting to 3G. I was using a not to be named dual-core awake mod/kernel at the time. Well, I remembered a reason we have dual-core and not quad-core is because of LTE so I went and flashed back to stock kernel. I didn't have the problem today when I went and played on the tower this time.
I may be completely wrong, but I wanted to bring it up to you devs who know more than I do.
This could also just be pure coincidence.

Its possibly nothing and really safe to say not to deduct anything from that experience until it is officially announced as "live" in your area...b/c right now they are still blocking from most sites so that alone could be causing issues and the hand off's...
Also without a log no dev is going to be able to troubleshoot the handoff your talking....though i honestly dont know what in the dual-core mod would cause that experience as all its supposed to effect is the cpu clock's which wouldn't touch data management connections in anyway...
Yeah, I know it is doesn't help to not have a log. I posted just in case someone out there wanted to know and if they want me to go and try to reproduce what I was describing and save a log then I would.
It is speculation.
And there are several cell towers in San Antonio now allowing 4G LTE connections.
To find them I have had to toggle airplane mode. Not just mobile data. When you have 4G in the area it will take a bit longer to connect data as it tries to negotiate which signal is best. Then it will connect to 3G or 4G accordingly. If you only have 3G in the area then after you toggle airplane it will go directly to 3G. That pause is the indicator you are close to a 4G tower.
Or if your data keeps dropping out. Your phone is trying to connect to lte but the tower is blocking it

I know the tower isn't blocking it. It's live and is meant to be. I called Sprint to confirm and they even shared with me that the towers by my house are going to be live in the next few days.
I wish I knew what value to change to make the phone sit and try/search 4G longer. Or a way to make 4G the only data connection.

download msl reader and get your msl. Then Go to dialer and do ##data# and go to edit and enter your msl. Have fun haha go to lte and change the scan settings

my friend just did on his 4g lte evo today
just updated mine and now its 25010
will see ow it acts, past few days my 3g has been slower
than normal, hope its sprint getting ready to turn on 4g

Prl only affects roaming. Nothing to do with sprint native coverage. For example certain prl's will allow you to connect to 3g roaming with verizon.

Lol yes it does. Especially on Sprint and especially when you live where I live. If the verizon tower near where I live wasn't included in the roaming list that I have then I would probably not even connect to 1X.
So yes, it does matter.

No it doesn't tell your phone to connect to towers on an order. It's by cellular system.
The only thing you will get out of this is of you are in Baltimore it adds 800smr coverage there.

Is anybody else noticing poor or poorer signal with the PRL 25010?
What ever the previous PRL was it seemed to work well. Sometime this week my service updated with 25010 and i started to notice lower signal in areas that i have always had full signal.
Then on 3 occasions now i have had text messages come all at once..
Example, this morning 11 messages came in all at once. This is bad because where i live is always full bars / great service. For the past few days its been 1 to 3 bars..
Another example. At my office, i get 4G LTE half bars, its been hovering at 1 bar. Then i got an email from someone trying to call me and it goes straight to voice mail. So i called my self using a differnt phone and sure enough.. multiple times it went to voice mail. Power cycling the phone fixed the issue of calls not going thru but i still have what seems to be poorer recieve signal strength.
I did check the back cover and verify its on tight.
Also my data speeds seem slower, on 3G and LTE.. but i would expect this with lower signal anyway, so the two should go hand in hand..

Everything you describe would not be caused by a PRL update. These would be tower issues.
