I just rooted my phone earlier today...so of course working on this was the first thing I planned on doing after root. If anyone would like to help with the testing...
Beware! This kernel might blow up your battery, steal your student loans, or post nude photos of you onto Reddit! That is why we are testing it now to see if it does any of those things. If it doesn't do any of those things, we are still posting those photos onto Reddit!
Here's the link for the earliest of builds
8-4-2011 beta 1.1
What's going in this kernel:
Well, it's kinda like the one for the Evo but not really. For those of you that owned any other HTC device before this one..you probably noticed that unlike some of the other devices, this 3D will let you know exactly what your battery percentage is on the charger. So there's no guessing, if it's at 100 it's at 100, if you charged it to 100 and the voltage dropped...then it's now at 99.
What does that have to do with anything?
Well, if you've owned the original Evo you would know it didn't do that. So whenever I tried to do some legit trickle charging, I had to do it based on the voltage that wasn't necessarily the battery's voltage. Well all of that no longer seems to be the issue. If you get Battery Indicator and check the voltage and percentage on 100%..it pretty much all matches up when you take it off the charger.
So what is this kernel doing right here?
Well, the magic happens at 100%. The phone charges from 0 to 100 like normal, but once it hits 100% the charger should shut off. And once the voltage and/or the percentage dips below what I set the value for 100% to be while it's on the charger, the charger will come back on. Pretty simple.
Will the battery explode/overheat?
For the first one, idk. So if you plan on flashing this, I am not responsible. If we go based on the OG Evo, then no. If we go based on the values I set, then no. But still...if you are feeling daring like me and are missing SBC like me...then this is for you to flash. If you're not feeling daring..then just hang out for a bit. If anything bad does happen, it will happen to me first since I've been using this the longest...so I'll be sure to give a heads up. But I doubt anything bad will happen.
As far as overheating...my phone is actually cooling off from 100%. This widget shows that I'm discharging but the voltage isn't dropping and when I pull it off the charger, I'm still at a solid 100%...
Ummm, side note:
This is based off of Netarchy's kernel. Why? Because I love Netarchy and his kernels haha.
Nice to see you in these parts!

And Known Issues
The voltage and the battery percentage are on a different page. I'm keeping the battery voltage at what should be 100% but if you use your phone heavily while its on the charger, both the voltage and percentage will drop, but...once you set it down, the voltage will go back up but the percentage will not. I'm working on that right now.

Well assuming not all of the phones are the same...I'm making 4.35 volts be 100%. So if someone's highest voltage was like 4.28 volts..they should be able to hit around 4.35 and maintain 4.35 with this.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm flashing right now.
And just out of curiosity, as you said not all phones are the same- does that mean that each individual battery is limited differently? Or is there something in the kernel that affects each phone in a different manner? In other words, is the difference due to hardware (battery) or software (kernel)?

I wish I knew. But luckily...we will find that out with this thread. Just like the Evo 4G, I didn't think that the voltage could get over 4.191V, then people were reporting 4.228V and whatnot..I had no idea. But comparing the Evo 4G to the 3D, the 4G didn't tell you the battery's voltage until you took it off the charger. At least now we know what it is while we're still on the charger..so hopefully it all reports the same for each phone. If it doesn't, then I'm going to guess that the difference would be the battery and not the kernel.

FYI, wifi tethering WILL cause battery temp to go up. Depending on how much data is transferred, it uses a lot of energy...cause it uses both 3G and wifi at same time.

I'm trying to think but nothing happens.
122f is nothing, I beleive the phones internal cutoff is 150f. Even then 150f is still not hot enough to cause damage, thats just a point that any hotter then that there is a potential for damage.
Highest I've seen mine was 147f that was on a hot ass summer day sitting in my windshield mount, with gps, bluetooth, and netflix streaming.
If your phone constantly and easily triggers the internal temperature shut off, then yes exchange. Otherwise use your phone and don't worry about it.
I think I got my Celsius and Fahrenheit mixed up. I believe the internal cutoff is at 50c or 60c. Highest I've seen mine is 47C or somewhere in there, high 40s I know that. I've never triggered the automatic shutdown though. 122f is 50c though, which is hot, potential damage to the phone is minimal but the battery is a different story. Although I don't think the temperature our phone reports is the actual battery temp. I've seen mine read in 40c range, and my battery feels cool to the touch.
over heating
what kernal do you have installed and also this could be the problem if your over clocked you should try another kernal and stay somewhere around 1.5 is all you need anymore than that will cause problems like over heating and breaking wifi so on and so on

Hey guys. I know this is going to appear an elementary issue but I can't seem to figure it out. I work for Sprint I know all about battery life and what kills it and how to make it last. My 3d is draining about 20 percent per hour! I have swapped batteries, tested my batteries, wiped my device mutiple times and flashed different roms and kernels. I can't seem to figure out why my battery life has become so bad. My wifes 3d lasts about 16+ hours with moderate use and I get nowhere near that. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

you can try wiping battery stats. if you have been flashing roms that can sometimes cause bad battery life. also the standard making sure radios you arent using are turned off and what not. but i'm sure you already know that. most recoveries have an option built in to wipe battery stats or you can use an app called batterycalibration. pretty straight forward app. hope that helps.

The radio version shouldn't effect battery life that much, could be from a bad signal, the phone constantly searching for signal kills the battery quick, and when you say her phone lasts 16 hours with moderate use.... That doesn't tell us too much,
Screen on time is where the valuable information comes from....
Do everything you can to maximize battery life... Turn on and off the certain radios as you need them etc.
And do a battery stat wipe, as this is calibrating the phone to the battery, not the battery to the phone... Flashing kernals and roms could Bork battery stats very easily... And flashing to a different one wouldn't necessarily fix the problem... Hope you get it worked out,
Get rid of auto brightness too, get your captivate buttons to a lower brightness they eat the battery up too...

I used incredicontrol to undervolt everything by 50 or 75 in incredicontrol. Using stock freqs, and ondemand governor. And used danuntzz's tool to do most of the desensing/debloating.

I also used Romtoolbox's auto start manager to keep things from opening in the background, it's probably the most helpful app I've used. Thanks next I just need the mugen 4000mAh so I'd only need to charge it on the weekends, but that thing is really expensive for a battery.

I need to figure out what's wrong with mine. I'm getting results like this with the extended VZ battery. I have to keep it plugged in all the time. Even with 4G disabled (3G still on), no wifi, no bluetooth; most days it will be dead in 8-10 hours.
Currently running 5/1 leak radios (RUU'd last week), running BAMF ICS 2.1 with the kernel that came with the Rom (1512mhz max, 384mhz min). Most syncing besides gmail is disabled.
I'll get a pic whenever i go unplugged again. I'm working remotely this week and am keeping it plugged up during conference calls.

So I've been struggling with battery life on this rezound since I purchased it. It does get hot every now and then sometimes for no reason. Most likely yes, isn't the extended battery 1.5x? Either way, battery consumption is hard to perfect. Like I said maybe underclock or find a battery saving build. Prop script to try I know system tuner pro has one built in.

I'd just replace the battery or take advantage of getting an extended one if you don't run a case.
From what I've read before, the placement of the CPU in this phone directly heats up the battery and these batteries don't like heat, it shortens their life.

Normal use, at least over a year.
What I do to save battery is very simple. During the day when I am away from a charger I drop minimum CPU freq all the way down to 192mhz. I put max freq at 540mhz and I set scaling to battery saver. Try this and see if you get a difference. Of course it will lag just a little bit but its worth it to save battery. And its not to hard to just go turn CPU up for just a moment if you really need to and then turn it back down when done.

So what s up with this? My battery seems to be getting worse all the time. I have screen brightness on the lowest setting. How can I fix the horrendous battery life. I've been running this rom a few weeks now. Is it time for a new battery?

Did you ever get a new battery? Did it improve your battery life? I'm thinking of getting a new battery and want to know what your screen on time is on the new battery?

Trick to tell if your battery is going bad:
Take it out. Lay it on a FLAT surface. Try to spin the battery. If it doesn't spin the battery is fine and it's a phone or ROM issue. If it spins easily and like a toy then your battery is bad. Over time the battery will bubble out due to being charged too much and result in an oblong shape that spins.

Not always true. I've seen some batteries that can go bad without starting to swell.Samsung batteries are really bad about swelling. HTC not so much. They just start losing their capacity levels. After 2 years it is good to get a new battery anyways for a cell phone.
