[Q] CWM Recovery issues reading External_SD - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I've been flashing Villain ROMs on my SGS2 since I got it a couple of months back but today I have come to flash the latest and found that CWM Recovery can no longer browse to the External_SD folder, it's there and I can select but it just refreshes the directory listing and doesn't take me into it.
Never had this before so I'm a bit stumped? While flashing (using the internal memory) I've seen messages in CWM mentioning that it can't read EXT-SD, seems its lost sight of it?
The SD works just fine once the phone is running though, can browse and copy to it quite happily.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Russ

Maybe i missed it but i have never seen CWM with external SD card .

Strange, it's certainly been working on mine, force of habit I always copy my ROMs to the external SD (as my Desire etc. didn't have internal) and I carried on doing so on my SGS2

External sd is not accessible in cwm on my phone

Same here, it's driving me mental... CWM shows it in the directory list but if I try to select it it just refreshes the list.
Edit : External_SD is actually a folder on the internal storage. I found this by connecting to my laptop and looking at Drive G, which is the internal. I found the External_SD folder and made a new folder called 'test' inside it. I then booted into CWM, browsed to the folder listing and opened External_SD and there was my 'test' folder... I have no idea how you access the external from CWM.

I have double checked no external sd card on CWM for me .
So exactly where was the setting on yours .
jje

You're really starting to make me doubt my sanity now, due to your comments I am now down to 90% sure that I used to save things to the external sd and flash from there, I mean I've flashed every VillainROM for the SGS2 going and yesterday was the first day I had an issue.
Could it be a radio or kernal issue?
I was coming from XXKG3 and Ninphetamine 2.0.2. Maybe the previous to those allowed it but doesn't since their release?

No ext sd here. Cwm won't enter etx folder for me

Anybody running the CF-Root kernel still? Up until recently I was but am now using Ninphetamine, could be kernel related?

Nope ran all and ever ever seen external sd card on CWM .
jje

When you say that do you mean you've never seen a folder called external_sd when browsing or it just didn't go anywhere?

I'm in the same boat. I used to copy all new roms and .apk to my external and flash them through cwm but since using Ninphetamine I can choose external sd but it seems to be empty. Not a big deal just created a new folder on internal memory but it would be nice to be able to back up the external again.

Same here. CWM stopped reading my extermal SD at some point. I used to copy the ROM zip file there and flash it from there. Suddenly I cannot do it anymore??

Why is my GS2 seeing my SD card as internal & vce versa

Before I ever started flashing kernels or ROMs my GS2 sees my internal card as the SD Micro card and my SD Card as the internal card?? Anyone else have this or know why this is??
Example, just now I went into CWM to update my SHOstock ROM and had to choose internal card for it to see the update even though I put the update on the SD Card..
same thing happened to me yesterday when i flashed my gs2 for the first time. i thought at first i accidentally loaded the zip onto my internal sd accidentally but i double checked and it was definitely on the external sd.
That's just the way it works on Entropy's kernel. I believe it even says so in his thread.

Yup. Someone didn't read the Changelog.
Cyanogenmod labels their partitions differently than Samsung-derived ROMs (Samsungs don't follow the current Android standard).
Right now the CWM binary in Daily Driver is pulled straight from CM7, so I haven't had a chance to recompile and label the external SD as external instead of internal

Hey guys. How do I make the external SD card the default location to where my data goes. I bought 9 MM And it required a full gig of data and it all went on my internal storage

No clue - turns out that what the OP was talking about was how CWM reports internal vs. external.

(Q) SD card contents not visible

Hi all
I'm new to the whole Android world. Although after a bit of a research I managed to root my phone and installed the resurrection rom for my sgs2.
All is fine with the new rom except that my SD card contents aren't visible in the file manager. But if I connect it to the PC it shows up just fine.
It would be real helpful if someone could give me a solution.
Thanx.

Have you read the FAQ for the rom?
« ¿Where are the files of my External SD?
This time the manage the external sd it's different way, now the external SD it's called /emmc, there are your files. You can access to this folder with any file explorer (even the stock one). Just open the file manager, select the "mnt" button, the one between the Home icon and SD icon. Inside you'll find emmc.
« ¿Ok, but then how set my external SD like "external_sd" instead of "emmc"?

just format it.(do not forget to backup things)

[Q] how to switch internal sd (currently sd card) back over to internal sd (emmc)????

how do i switch the interal sd card(emmc) to external sd card(sdcard) back to normal? currently its ext sdcard(emmc) and internal(sd card)...i believe thats the reason why my external files arent visible on my phone because my phones external sd card is emmc (took out my microsd and in cwm said cant mount emmc) and my internal sd is sd card aka ext sd. if that makes sense... is that better that way with the vibrant? is it rom related? i do know its been like that since i switched to miui. im running docs ics v12 now. is there a way to create a path to the ext card(mounted as emmc) on the sd card root path? so if my internal sd is set to be extsd it thinks its its saving on the extsd but isnt so it wont have a external sd path? and my external is set to be internal so i cant save anything on it with my phone though i wonder if when i flash a rom those files are saved to my ext.. so if i were to format my emmc (extsd) would that mess my phone. f-it im about to try it now lol.. formated, done, reboot... well i dont think it hurt anything and i know my extsd is completly wiped now but im still stuck with the problem on not being able to transer anything from my internal sd to extsd because there is no path for it in the file browser, i dont really want to go through the trouble of backing up my internal sd card, formatting that hoping it doest brick my phone like ive read b4, putting what files i want back on it, just to be stuck with same problem an hour later. seems like there are many post on this but ive yet to find an easy solution. i know someone has had to of come up with a fix for this... thanks
I'm running with internal sdcard only, but used to use external. Cyanogenmod handles both fine. I tried AOKP build 35 and had no sdcard, and tricks I tried with symlinks or mount -bind had no effect. So one fix is to find a good rom. There may be other ways around it.
I flashed aokp build 36 a few days ago and my internal and SD was switched too. I found this file posted by Mr. Physco and flashed my memory back to normal. I'll try to find link and repost

so does anyone know of a good ics ROM that supports both sd cards? Last ROM I used that supported both sd cards I think was bionix v. I guess it's really not that big of deal since I can stream my music with google music, but I would like to use the empty 16GB memory card I have in my phone for game data or movies. So Akop build 36 has a fix for that? I'll have to check it out, thanks

Try CM9. That one supported both my SD's (Galaxy Player 5.0). But, beware of directory changes. The external SD is now under "mnnt/emmc/".

issue with external sd card and recovery

There is a nuclear bomb headed for your house. :good:
Thread moved
Questions never belong in Development. Ever.
Seems the newest update to the recovery does this by default I don't like the idea of keeping downloads in the internal memory so I reverted back to the original 5.8.4.5 cwm recovery. Good luck!

Photos deleted after flashing stock ROM via Odin

Hi,
I'm new and though I've watched the noob video I hope I'm in the right place, if not please dont get angry ><.
2 days ago I've flashed into stock rom for my SG3 (GT-i9300) back from my RGUI v5 Build number: MIUI-2.8.3 IMM76D / Kernal version: 3.0.38-Siyah-s3-v1.3.9c
Ask me why? because I've had some issues trying to install official MIUI v4 from the international website and always I get error: "Status 7" with a dead android inside. (Again, Why ? because I as hoping it would make my SG3 even smoother... more responsive)
So I though perhaps flashing it from a stock rom might work, so I used Odin and everything went fine, again ofcourse I got the error and went back to CWM to restore the backup i've made before flashing anything, I dont really mind about the error right now, I've seen similar posts about it and I shall continue investigating it, What's more important is on the next phrase.
Today I found out that all my photos were deleted, after restoring my RGUI v5 rom 2 days ago ofcourse....
I'm not sure how could the situation get any better though I remember previously flashing rom's that the SD card never being touched and I guess I was wrong.
What I wanted to ask is, I just got more CWM backup files on my external SD, does anyone knows if CWM backup restores user data aswell or should I just give up ?
Helpfull tips of how to restore it could be usefull (Oh lord, please spare me I beg you, I'll pray more).
Thanks in advance.
I've flashed hundreds of times on S1, S2 and now S3 and never lost any data or photos that are on either the internal or external sd cards.
Not sure but could it be that you somehow hit format sd card in cwm by accident?

Have you searched your internal and external storage? Maybe they were only stored on a different location so that the stock Gallery cannot find them?
Storages are either completely wiped or not wiped - but you don't only loose one particular folder

I tried to install 3rd party Gallery program which scans my SD's for photos and it could nothing.... Its probably not there.
I think all is lost unless one of my backups contains them.

Unfortunately cwm backups do not backup stuff on the sd card like photos. Looks like you've lost them man.

In a more optimistic view there are worse things, and although its quite hard to swollow all I've got left to do is say thanks to every one for trying...
Thanks.
Sorry, but this is a "Well Duh..." moment.... Flashing any stock rom through ODIN will always wipe the data partition on the internal sd card. You need to backup the internal stuff onto your PC. Only a stock firmware that has been modded will allow a non-wipe flash and you usually need to be rooted as it is no longer a stock rom.
You should be able to restore a nandroid backup of a stock rom too without wiping the internal sd card as this is only putting the system data back onto your phone...

It almost looked like a life saver case but it seems to target the external SD card only.
I can't seem to find a setting to switch into internal SD...
