How hot is too hot for the processor? I live in Vegas and its 103*F outside. I have SetCPU set to max at 1728 with the interactive governor. I just took my phone out of my pocket and it was quite hot to the touch, and the SetCPU widget said it was running @ 1728 w/ a temp of almost 120*F. So i want to add a temperature profile to scale the cpu down when its getting too hot. So what temp should i use?
Tia.

Id say 105 should be hot enough.
Why are you overclocking
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Battery's stated operating temperature is up to 140F (60c).
Having said that, the phone goes into protect mode (Flashing power light) at about 135.
Just remember, electronics laugh at temperatures that we cant handle. My 8800 GT ran about 80-90c (Giant ass high-end video card back in the day) under load and was just fine. Granted, the phone wont handle quite that, but it is probably laughing at 120F.

Cause he can, but I don't see the point in over clocking while the phone is sleeping. Usually you want to under clock while the screen is off.
i have had many phones go over and stay over 120 degress i would say if it goes past 130 alot u might want to do something about it.
I set my profile to scale down at 45 C, it only ever hits that for me if I've been streaming music on a long drive while charging.
Thanks for the input guys. Im try and get some better profiles worked out today.

Does SetCPU need to add support for the GS2 to work for this?
Or are there any apps that can adjust CPU settings?

Actually I wanted to underclock.
I installed SetCPU anyway and it seems to be working
Set from 200mhz to 1000mhz
i tried to use setcpu for power button turn off profile, it failed to turn back on each time. so have gotten rid of it now.

You need to include 800mhz for screen-off profile
As with galaxy s and nexus s, the device needs 800mhz for turning back on
I have charging profile on top, screen off prof as 200-800 right below, and 200-500 for regular use at the bottom.
No freeze issue so far for the past 8 hours, and I'm going strong at 72% (which includes 30 min of gaming, 40 min of movie, one reboot, and total of 1hr and 45min display on time).
Damn i'm looking forward to this phone. I've had a Hero for the last 18mths and battery life has been a pile of manure. Now to hear people talking about underclocking and still having a fast phone, can't wait.
I was curious... does SetCpu work for this phone like Milestone Overclock? What's the difference, aside from SetCPU having more options?
They are both free (well SetCPU only free for XDA), but everyone uses milestone OC here and I'm wondering if there's a reason for that.

There is difference between two applications. Milestone overclock actually overclocks the processor while setcpu doesn't. Setcpu just changes clock frequency of CPU ranging from minimum to maximum. It allows you to make user profiles depending on which frequency of processor will be controlled. It actually helps battery last battery longer. BTW setcpu is paid application
SetCPU is used for setting CPU parameters. Like the range of mhz your CPU works at. Also setting profiles (CPU mhz when the phone is charging, reach temperature, battery lower than... etc.). But it cannot be used for overcharging, that's why we use Milestone overclock...

I personally think Setcpu creates glitches in phone routine. Say when I play music and turn off the display, after I turn it on it pauses music a bit. I uninstalled it, problem seems to be no more. Still I can't confirm if the bug was created because of setcpu plus the battery life is not increased exponentially with setcpu.
Thanks for the answers

I think I agree, lol. Android has it's own built in "Setcpu" it's supposed to do a good job on it's own. I have been using it lately and not really sure it is much of an advantage. I'm gonna go a few days without I think and see. Same with battery calibration, I use 3 backup batteries so if it works it really can't work properly when switching batteries but they all always seem calibrated the same whether I use it or not.
SetCPU works with msoc but it is more of a parameter setting app. Imagine if you were oc to 1200 all the time. That would be foolish bc your processor would burn up that is to say if you battery stayed charged long enough to do it. Im set at 1100/74 but I don't need it like that all the time. When my screen is off, why do I need it that high. I do bc I listen to alot of online media, MLB, Jango, Pandora, and if the screen is on it makes temp go up. I do, you may not need it that high. SetCPU allows me to set that parameter to adjust the CPU down and underclock it if I need to. Also if my battery is too hot, I don't need it to be fast as lightning compounding heat, so I set it for a specific temp and it underclocks when I hit it. Here is a screen shots to show my settings.

Yes it has to do with SetCPU if your minimum frequency is less. In screen lock profile select min frequency to 550Mhz instead of 250Mhz. Music won't pause while waking up your device. It works!

I guess you are correct.
But currently I removed the SetCPU. And I see much better performance now. I was min at 250MHz. Even the quadrant score is much better now.
Thanks for your insight
I remove setcpu and do a comparison too. I'm using CM 7.1.0 of fjfalcon and it lasts 1.5-2 days with minimal usage on setcpu. Now let's see if it's barely unnoticable.
but I think set cpu to 250mhz during the night when you don't use your phone may prolong battery life.

Dude! with those settings what is your battery life like?
my minimum is at 125mhz and max at 250mhz (when screen off) and I lose 30% over night! and it barely lasts 8hours D:
what ROM are you on?
Do you guys know how the smartass governor works?
I recently flashed the 1.4 cm-1.4-240-325-300 kernel and when i run let my phone run up to 1.4, in set cpu with 216 min and 1400 max. My phones cpu seems to run really hot, i have a profile set to let me know if it goes over 50 degrees Celsius and if i play with phone for more than maybe 10 or 20 minutes with a few apps it seems to jump to 50-55 degrees Celsius, not even any super graphics intense games or anything, just opera mini and stock messaging app mainly. Is the temp reader in Setcpu off? The phone doesn't seem to feel all too insanely hot in my hand, and its definitely been hotter before even before overclocking, atleast to the touch. My question is what is a "safe range" for the Tegra 2 in our phone? Ive read that in general about 50 Celsius is recommend. Also any recommendations for ways to easily monitor my cpu temps without having to pull open all menus in Setcpu, maybe an app that runs in notification bar?
since its winter time your phone is just being smart and activating its handwarmer functions...
well according to the manual don't recharge it when its above 45 celsius and don't expose it to temperatures above 60 celsius... so yeah running a lil hot... have you under volted at all? if it gets to hot it will also start doing silly stuff like crashing and such. so keep an eye on it, and be a tad concerned maybe add a few case fans... oh wait wrong subject ...

It would figure that a question like this would come up AFTER I deleted the ton of datasheets for the Tegra2. If I remember correctly, the max is around 60C. Your biggest concern is cooking the battery if plugged into a charger/dock while running that hot.
Yes im undervolting, rather heavy, imo atleast. At 216 mhz im at -175 mv with no issues whatsoever.. and at 1400 mhz im undervolting by -100 mv. Undervolting should make the phone cooler, am i correct? And thanks to all who posted, especially with the specific temps and apps, huge help!
over clocking newbee
the things brought up here are some of the things im worried about doing to my phone. I looking to over clock my photon without loosing anything 4g,wifi,ext. i am running a stock rom that is rooted and running SD speed increase. i would like to use the 1.5 ive seen but i am more concerned about keeping the phone stable if anyone has ideas for me appreciate the help thanks
Hey all,
I've been noticing over the past few times I've been playing GTAIII and MC3 that the internal temp of my phone rises drastically, to a point where I can barely hold one side of my phone without having to let go every few seconds because it is so hot. From where the battery is positioned, I assumed it might be the GPU heating up, but other att gsII users said their batteries were heating up.
So,
1) Is anyone else experiencing these problems
2) If you are, has anything happened to your phone
I'm debating whether to trade it in for a new one, because I'm still under warranty.
Welcome to high performance electronics. If you push the CPU/GPU hard it's gonna heat up. It's like a desktop, if you do something CPU/GPU intensive it'll heat up. It's a simple byproduct of inefficiency.
As to batteries heating up, that could just be because they're close to the CPU/GPU. Batteries will warm up under high current draw as well.
Do you have a case on your phone? Those tend to trap heat in as well.

If your phone is overclocked, the processor will be running at the max clock you have set while playing the game, which is higher than what it's supposed to be running at, i.e., the stock clock. Prolonged usage at this higher-than-normal clock will generate excessive heat.

Yeah I don't play GTA3 anymore because of this kind of stuff. It doesn't get to the point where I have to literally move my hands because of the heat though. I simply don't like my phone getting even remotely warm. I'm just really anal about stuff like that. I fear that doing it will shorten the life of the device and I love this phone way too much to let that happen.
I'm sure it's designed to run at these higher temps since mine is completely stock with regards to cpu speed and voltage. If I can't play a game due to this, then I simply pass on the game. Same with my computer but I digress...
Download an app to check the temperature. Yes, ideally cooler the better, but the phone is designed to handle a certain amount of heat.
From what the op is describing, that is definitely too hot. Over time the components life can be shortened. But what you'll see first is your battery life going down, even quit working all together.
Underclock the processor. That can help keep the heat down. Even as low as 500mhz can pay many games. 800mhz should be plenty for most high end games.

I'm not overclocked, but yeah, same thing happens with me when I play MC3. I got scaredish since it got a bit too hot, seemed more hot than it was supposed to be.
download the diagnosis app and set it to check your batt temperature, if that gets above 45c I would be worried and think about underclocking/undervolting.
As long as your phone is cool enough to handle, don't worry. There's a lot more to it, but the electronics can take a lot more than most people credit them for. The battery is the most sensitive to temp, but so long as it's not for terribly long periods of time, you shouldn't even notice any additional degradation over the long run.

Average day to day operating temps are between 30° and 40° celsius.
Sent from my páhhōniē
If anyone's interested, I have pretty much eradicated the heat problem while also boosting battery life and conserving performance. This was done through setCpu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
The problem was that apps were just running the processor like crazy on the 1.2 GHz speed setting, and it used a considerable amount of juice that was unnecessary, heating up the battery to a ridiculous amount.
But anyway, here's the profiles/voltage settings I use:
Main Governor: 200 MHz - 1200 MHz on demand
Profiles:
- Charging, 800 max, 200 min, ondemand, priority = 100
- Temp > 44.1 Celsius, 500 max, 200 min, conservative, priority = 100
(this is a conservative temperature, but most place the *dangerous* amount of heat at 50 degrees before battery life starts decreasing, the CPU/GPU components have solder that melts at 70 degrees)
-Screen Off, 500 max, 200 min, conservative, priority = 75
-Battery <25%, 800 max, 200 min, powersave, priority = 75
-In Call, 800 max, 200 min, conservative, priority = 50
Voltages:
(I was able to undervolt by 50-75 mV for each and still remain stable, these are tested btw)
1600 MHz - 1400 mV
1400 MHz - 1225 mV
1200 MHz - 1200 mV
1000 MHz - 1100 mV
800 MHz - 1025 mV
500 MHz - 950 mV
200 MHz - 875 mV
and that's it! It's working great, I don't have the heat issues I used to, now I can play graphically demanding games and the temp doesn't rise past ~42 degrees, pretty solid improvement. I also get 24-28 hours of battery life with 2-2.5 hours of screen on time per day.
No need to worry about this. That's nowaday phones designed to be. Just normal heat.

I agree that's how they're 'supposed' to be. But things mess up. AMD processors are designed to handle heat, but they are still known for getting too hot and damaging the graphics chip. Better safe than sorry.

Agreed. theory and actuality are two incredibly different concepts
I have my SGP5 overclocked to 1.5ghz at the moment via Tegrak. Everything is running smoothly but the spot on the back where the CPU is gets warm to the touch. Not hot or anything, but obviously warm.
Before I had it overclocked to 1.45ghz and it stayed a lot cooler, but to get to 1.5 I had to bump the core voltage to 1.35v. I also have the up-threshold set to 35% so it spends a good amount of time at max speed.
Since these things don't have CPU temp monitoring, how do you tell when it's too hot? My battery temp never goes much over 80*F, so that doesn't seem like a good indicator of anything.
Sitting here playing music with Mufin my IR temp gun reads a max of 100*F on the back of the case over the CPU. Battery temp is reading 77*. Is that too warm? How much of a temp differential can there be between the outside of the case and the CPU itself?
I'm no noob to overclocking PCs, but this is my first Android device so I don't really know it's limits as clearly.
Any help would be mucho appreciated!
DISCLAIMER - anything within this thread has the potential to do permanent damage.. I haven't had any issues yet but will not be held responsible for any damage!
So I just pulled the back cover off it. Running the same program for 10-15mins the CPU never exceeded 82.5*F which is well within safe limits imo.
I guess that goes to show how poor the cooling is in one of these things with the back cover on. I'm going to keep running 1.5ghz and report any issues. The difference in smoothness between 1.4 and 1.5ghz is pretty dramatic.. web browsing is very very smooth now. I probably won't be going any higher than 1.5, but for now it seems safe.

Just tried your profile, and I have to say it works fantastic! The web browsing really is super fast.
Is there any major danger at this clock speed with On-Demand on? I mean, it'll only use 1.5GHz if it needs it right?

Ondemand from my understanding, scales processor speed using the values in the up/down (I believe System Tuner refers to down as "powersave bias") threshold. From my experience it's the best governor to use as far as customizing it easily and getting it to respond well.
Whatever you set the up-threshold to, when CPU load exceeds that value it bumps the speed up to the next "level" and ending in full speed. Then when CPU load falls below the down-threshold, it scales it back down to the next lowest level, so on and so-forth. You can also adjust the sampling rate too - lower frequency means it checks the CPU load more frequently and essentially makes the governor more responsive.
When I set mine to 35%, almost any program aside from stuff sitting almost completely idle will trip the CPU to hit 1.5ghz. This makes everything real responsive and may use more battery.. but I prefer having a more responsive device. You can also adjust the up-threshold to a higher number to try to lower temps and extend battery life. You can really play around with it to suit your needs, there's not really anything to screw up there.
There shouldn't be any danger using it with the ondemand.. but since I haven't tested this for more than a few days right now just keep an eye on temps (especially while playing games) and watch out for any "stuttering" out of the blue. Mine gets warm but nothing excessive. You'll be able to feel it on the back between the speakers.
I have to say though, even running such a high clock speed I'm not really seeing any negative effect on battery life so far.
Lemme know how yours goes!
How can it not have any risks? When the heat is too much somethig will explode wouldn't it?
No just kidding, but seriously. There is a risk of overheating a hardware and 'destroying' it, there should be!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Well of course there's always some risk in overclocking! Especially when you don't know what you're doing.
As far as using one governor or another though.. when it comes down to it there shouldn't be a huge difference.
