[Q] Can the radio impact phone performance? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Forgive me if this is an ignorant question, but I'm wondering if the radio you have flashed can have a noticeable impact on the phones performance. I have not changed my kernel settings, but felt a bit more lag when using one radio over another. I was under the impression that the radio simply dealt with phone reception and had nothing to do with performance. Is this all in my head, or can it play a part? Thanks

Yeah, it's just dealing with the phone signal, no effect on performance. Are you completely stock?

Im actually running BAMF 1.8.6. I flashed the newest mr2 radio from the team BAMF site and found that I was having issues getting a gps lock (tried multiple times and locations). Read on a forum post that another user was having the same issue. He found that flashing the same radio off of xda solved his problem (baseband numbers were identical). I tried this and found that I was able to get gps lock instantly, but that my phone felt sluggish and would get hot (109 Fahrenheit) even when my data connection was turned off. I went back and flashed a slightly older leaked mr2 radio. Seems to have solved my problem of overheating as well as the sluggishness. Just kinda confused me because like I said I didn't make any changes to my kernel during all of this and was just using the phone in a day to day context. I thought that maybe if the second radio was struggling with maintaining a signal that could account for the heat and sluggishness, but all 3 radios have had good reception so I can't figure it out. Either way problem solved.

ppl using the new radio and lucky enuff to not have random reboot what is your setup?

i was hoping to get some ideas on ways to set up my phone to minimize random reboots on the new radio, I tried changing kernels but had no luck. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Rom/kernel version and if you are OC and if yes up to what? 4g/3g? And if on cdma or something else Thank you

I read that it isn't so much the phone, but rather the cell towers that were causing the random reboots (this was over in the TB General Forum)

I have found most reboots occur when over clocking past 1.3ghz due to voltage spikes or inadequate overvolting at 1.45 and up.
On cm7 and bamf I never had a reboot with either radio using imo kernels keeping oc under 1.42 and using smartass governor
Hope this helps
Usual location: West Los Angeles area
I have tried all combinations of radios and several roms available on XDA. I've never experienced a random reboot.
Baseband verison: 1.16.00.0402w_1
Kernel: bamf_4.4.7
build: Das Bamf 1.6.2 Remix
Software Number: 1.13.605.7
PRI Version: 1.41_002, 1.64_002 <- dunno if this matters for anything.
No overclock.
Can't think of anything else. I think I've been lucky.
Bone Stock and has never rebooted on me as of yet. I live in the outskirts of a 4G tower and it flips in and out. I do have a slightly better battery life compared to before the update.
I've also tried a bunch of combos with no reboots, but I mostly run leankernel "normal" and das bamf remix. Never a reboot.
I've never had a reboot using the latest radio (both the LTE and CDMA ones). Im just using BAMF Stripped and adrynalyne's 4.4.7 kernel without voice recording. No overclocking and ondemand governor. I think most of the reboots are probably just caused by overclocking/overheating.
i am running the BAMF roms. I upgraded my radio when it came out. I didnt have reboots for a week or so then i had random reboots and even had my phone just shut off a couple of times. I only have 3G and have the phone set to CDMA auto.
I changed the radio to the .7CDMA and .6LTE and havent had a reboot since?
In that time i also changed kernels and roms also, but did have a couple of days with the same rom/kernel after changing the radio to the .7/.6 combo.
I also did notice that my phone was on 3g revA even though it was set to use eHPRD. Verizon was messing with things and maybe that caused the reboots. Now that they turned eHPRD back on and pushed the update maybe they were the cause of the reboots and maybe it is fixed now?
I'm running the latest stock everything.. no random reboots in over 3 days.
I'm running the new firmware and radio, rooted and crapware removed, but otherwise stock. No reboots in my local area.
Having said that, running the same stuff, I was getting reboots last week when I was in the Indy area. Based on that, and the timeline of events, I think this is what's happening (I posted basically this yesterday? in another thread):
VZW started rolling out the update, and recognized an issue. That issue was caused by an incompatibility between the software on some cell sites (VZW uses at least Nortel, Motorola and Lucent 3G BSSs, Ericsson and Lucent for LTE, maybe others) and the new TB radio firmware. They believed the root cause to be with the eHRPD software on some cell sites.
So, they stopped the update rollout. They turned off eHRPD. They upgraded the software on the problematic cell sites. They turned eHRPD back on. They restarted the update rollout. That all fits with what we've seen.
I wasn't getting reboots before at home, and I'm not getting them now. I think I'm on a Nortel BSS. When I was getting the reboots in Indy, they stopped when I reverted to the older radio firmware. From that, I assume that VZW uses a different BSS vendor to cover the area of Indy I was in, and the problem was with interoperability of the new TB radio with that vendor's BSS.
People are apparently still getting reboots. It may be Verizon didn't really fix what they needed. It may be that they only fixed one type of BSS, and need to address the issue on another type. They may have only fixed one of multiple issues. It may actually be an issue with the phone's firmware. eHRPD/LTE are new, and this is just some pain they're going through. You find problems when you have 100,000 users that you don't when you have a few hundred.
I don't know whether I'd get reboots today if I went back to Indy and tried again with the new radio firmware. I didn't have any problems switching between old and new radio f/w running my mostly stock image - YMMV if you're running someone's "ROM."
You can get just the radio firmware in this thread.
Finally, I suspect the reboot is caused by something like: phone tries to switch modes or negotiate something with the BSS (we know they're trying to make transitions work better, and that was the claimed reason for the radio upgrade). BSS doesn't respond as the phone expects. Phone retries unsuccessfully X times, then finally gives up and reboots.
The reboots would not have been to bad because it was occasional but the battery drain that happens is what I didn't like. Thank you everyone for their feedback.

Heh, I just switched from BAMF 1.6.2 to CM7 alpha. Using latest radio leak and leanKernel extreme and I have had absolutely no reboots since switching ROMs.
(In no way should one infer from the previous statement that BAMF and/or Adrynalyne's kernels in any way definitively contributed to reboots. - I changed ROMs a day or so after the new firmware was pushed to unrooted phones.)
Literally, everything stock. I flashed the PB file flashboot, that's it. No reboots, and killer battery life. Half a battery got me through the day.
This is a replacement Thunderbolt...

Leankernel 2.4, bamf 1.6.3 remix with leaked OTA, live in LTE area but go into 3G frequently. No reboots ever. Not sure if this matters but I exchanged my phone a week ago due to the wireless radio getting stuck off. New one is working great so far.
I have been overclocked dice day one on this thunderbolt and started noticing random reboots and I'm not on the newest radio. The weird thigh is I got a random reboot each time I go to my parents place where the signal isn't great by at the same time the other day I returned to stock clock speeds and haven't had a random reboot yet. So its kinda hard to narrow it down. But I'm going with lack of voltage during overlcocming to be the cause. Besides I can't tell a real world difference in performabce when overclocked anyways. Btw I'm using 4.4.5 kernel by adrynalyn.
No root. Before the update I had to do a factory reset because I had to data making my phone basically be a paper weight.

So I flashed the leaked radio the other night after 2 early reboots everything settled down and was going good. I was using PS1.4 rom and ziggys 5/3 kernel and its default max1036/122 min and no OC app. Changed the setting to cdma(prl) cuz I dont live in a 4g area and shortly after I started getting reboots again. Then I changed it back to evdo/cdma auto then no reboots. But the searching for 4g was affecting battery life and I didn't see much of a difference between stock and leaked radio except the battery drain. Gps and everything seemed to be the same so I decided to flash back to the stock radio which has been more stable for me and I could keep it at the cdma(prl) setting which is better battery life for me...so ill probably stick to the stock radio until we get 4g. And that is my experience

[Q] radio constantly losing signal

hey guys,
havent posted here in a long time, but i have been having some odd problems regarding my fascinate. I recently updated from superclean to the UKB 2.0, then installed the 2.1 patch immediately after. While on superclean i attempted to update my radio, odin'd to various different ones since the phone seemed to have sporadic service and the 1x/3g symbol had basically vanished. so i flashed UKB and noticed even worse radio service, and so i odin'd dl09 on to the phone which didnt seem to help at all and now im at ed04 through CWM. my phone works alright now, with better service but still a data connection that cant seem to hold. and now of all a sudden im constantly losing all bars and its saying i have no service in the same location i was receiving 2 bars.
so i was wondering if anyone has had this problem or can point out something that i did horribly wrong, since it seems the state of the phone's radio has just been decreasing since i started fiddling with it. any thoughts would be much appreciated!
thanks
oh and just noticed that gps is no longer functioning...lol
solved. seems that part of the problem was juice defender which was supposed to only disable data connection when the screen was off, but apparently was toggling full airplane mode almost randomly, even while awake and when trying to send a text.
other thing i did was flash back to stock rom with dl09 to wipe everything, rerooted and updated to UKB, and have done nothing with the radio. ive noticed radio still is functioning subpar to when i was in stock so im confused there but i got functionality back.
gps works now too although i added GPSaids, first few seconds is completely wrong but as it picks up more sats it homes in frighteningly fast to my precise location.
edit: data connection still seems to be dropping only when i start attempting to access data, but that seems to be a new problem
I'm having the same problem, fresh install of ukb 2.0 restart then 2.1.
I have the EC01 Modem,
Signal is all over the place constantly. 3g, 1x, phone only, mostly is 2 bars then 0, back and forth
Wifi is a little weird, so is bluetooth...
I think I'm just going to wait for JT's full CM7...

Some SGS2 problems could be device specific? Maybe? Post your findings...

Hi, I have recently come back to an SGS2 after dumping one after they first came out. The reason for me was terrible battery life, the 3G, H, H+ switching lockup issue, and poor GPS performance. At the time I think the most recent firmware was XXKE4. My original phone was originally on 3, which I de-branded and upgraded every time a newer version of firmware got released, after a couple of weeks use I noticed a duff pixel, so re-branded, took it back and swapped it for another, did the same customisation and it was still no good, I could be wrong, but I think the received signal strength was worse on the second one too. In any case the aforementioned issues still remained. In the end I got rid of it and went for a HTC sensation.
This proved, ultimately, to be a bad choice, what with all the dust issues, and an even bigger battery life problem than the SGS2, also, despite popular belief, i think the build quality of the SGS2 is better, sensation is horrible and creaky. Anyway, I ended up getting all disappointed with dual-core phones, and went back to my trusty old LG optimus one for a bit of normality. Eventually tho, I got the opportunity to own an SGS2 again, and I crumbled..
Now, I have an SGS2, I was immediately greeted with a software update, which I did, to XWKG4, still 3 branded, only mod was insecure kernel, root, reflash standard kernel. That's it.
Now I have no 3G, H, H+ switching issues, it takes its time sometimes but never gets completely stuck like it used to, GPS is better, Signal strength is actually good, no browser flash crashes, and most impressive, even set up as it was before with multiple push email, whatsapp, skype running constantly, twitter, constant syncing, wifi on all the time, gps on all the time, no battery saving at all, it's using about 4% an hour in standby. Which I think is pretty darn good. In fact, I can't find anything to complain about.
Seems to me, some of these problems could be related to individual handsets, so i'm keeping this one, and not gonna be messing with any ROM's either.
Anyone else got one that "just seems to work"?
Pink spot on camera is my only problem, playing with white balance almost solves this. I get 10 - 12hrs heavy use, 36hrs medium use and 48ish hrs light use. all with wifi on constantly, gps on, emails on push. no signal issues, no yellow or blue tint on screen. sound through headphones is great on power amp, never used stock player, no wake up lag. from reading on here we may be the lucky ones tho, either that or the other happy people don't bother posting
Btw I'm on unbranded voda UK, kf3, stock Rom without root
My wifi keeps dropping out. It'll work for 10 minutes and then stop completely yet still show bars of signal. Latest firmware i've used is KG3. I've now taken it in to be fixed.
No Probs with wifi here, seems to work just fine. Actually, just had my first issue, although nothing major, was using the built in email app, just went to reply to an email and it kept insisting that it was an unrecognized email address, wouldn't let me reply, so just binned it and gone back to using Gmail.
Had 2 phones from O2 in the UK and both have poor in call volume through the headset.
Music volume is fine. I think it uses different hardware for voice calls? Which means it might not be fixable via firmware. I'll make do tho cause everything else is smashing!

CM9 Radio question

Edit: Updated my radios, still having issues. More info in a thread below.
Hey all,
I recently started running leNoob CM9 mod, and I've noticed that my connection has bottomed out a bit. I normally would have 4-5 bars with little issue, now I'm lucky to have 1 or 2. I dropped a call earlier today, and I haven't had that happen in literal years.
Poking around I noticed there were radio versions better than what I'm currently using: (1.22.10.0421r, 1.22.10.0424r) but I'm completely unsure whether that's the problem here, or how to update them if it is.
I'm S-OFF, if that helps the solutions any.
Thanks for your time!
See the firmware thread in the dev section, you can update just your firmware/radios/etc and not have to run a RUU since you're s-off.

Yes, you can flash the hboot/radio combo by superchilpil, then flash a hacked hboot. Apophis has a thread with hex edited hboots.

I was going to make another thread for this, but hey, I saw this one I made a few days ago and it came in handy.
Since the last time I posted I did the firmware upgrade to the 2.xx radios, but that sadly did not help my issues any. My data connection will randomly drop in any situation; indoors, outdoors, whatever. I can flip my phone to airplane mode and back to restore the data connection, and it usually instantly hits 4-5 bar 4G. Unfortunately, not long after that it'll drop to 1 bar and sometimes stabilize back up to 4-5 and stay there for awhile.
Other times, it'll drop to 3G, 1x, or turn off altogether. 95% of the time it will then just stay off until I reboot the phone or hit airplane mode. The rest of the time it'll come back into 3G or more commonly 1x and stay there until it repeats the above drop process.
I've had this problem on all of the CM9 mods I've tried (currently running Rage 1.2). I've tried various network modes but I've had the greatest success of getting any signal on the LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA setting; the LTE or CDMA / LTE only ever gets 1 bar ever, and never improves.
Before CM9 on Stock ICS I had 4-5 bars anywhere in my house, and even at work (the center of a very large building) I'd still have 2-3 bars and rock solid data connection. I have not yet tried going back to Stock to see if that fixes my issues, but I'm leaning that way unless anyone has some better options here.
Thanks for your time!

I've also been seeing the exact same issue with my signal but since flashing the Global RUU and Rage. Previously I was on older radios and NeoMax and had high performance on the signals and battery life. Battery life has also dropped significantly since the Global RUU and Rage. :/

In Rage 1.2 at least, my screen-off battery life is almost bulletproof. 8 hours not on the charger and it only lost 3%. Screen-on time though is almost exactly the same as Stock, and that includes going to the Wheatley governor, sio, underclocking the CPU and cranking the screen brightness way down.
As far as the radio issue goes, somewhere in the Rage thread Neo mentioned that radios on AOSP roms atm are hit and miss; some people have no problems, some people have constant problems. Currently there's really nothing they can do about it IIRC, and we'll basically just have to wait until someone can pin down the problem. Either that or go back to a Sense based rom, to which I say, phooey!
Try flashing a ruu then doing a factory reset in hboot after before restoring recovery. Worked for me

And an ruu likely won't flash if it is corrupted.

[Q] No Service - Modem issue? AT&T

Phone - Galaxy s2 i777, about 18 months old, running the factory ICS update
Ok, so I was initially having problems with my phone rapidly losing charge - Shutting down at 70% booting up at 40%, I assumed it was shutting down because it was over heating due to a large amount of power being discharged at once. I lived with that for a while, I assumed a new battery might fix it.
Next, before I got a new battery, my power button stopped working, so the only way I could unlock my screen was to get a message, or plug the phone in.
Now, I've installed ShoStock3 v2.5.1, (started out installing a kernel by Jeboo) then switched to Siyah v7.9
The power button issue came back after a short amount of time with the jeboo kernel, but seems to be fixed with the Siyah kernel (I'm not sure if that is just a timing/coincidence thing or not, but I thought it was worth mentioning)
My real issue now is that I have almost no service, I get anywhere from a "no service available triangle" to a 3G or H+ symbol with no bars shown. Every now and then I get a few bars, receive a few messages, and then the bars go away.
I assumed it was the modem since ShoStock3 says it flashed the modem during the installation dialog, I've tried using:
UCKJ4
UCLE5
UCLK3
and UCPLC5
so far, and nothing has worked. Maybe I'm just a noob and using the wrong modems, maybe it's a hardware issue, no idea.... so please help me out, I've been searching the forums for a couple of days to fix my problems, you guys have been great so far.
Also, I'm from around Baltimore Maryland in the US if that helps narrow down what modem I should be using.

Modem won't affect service. Are you sure you aren't in a dead zone? Also the battery thing is normal for our phone if it reboots
Nope, not in a dead zone. The issue just started recently, before I had plenty of service. WiFi works, but both my cell service and my GPS won't, which I thought indicated modem... any other ideas?

Try going back to stock gb?
Okay, so I'm still on shotock3 with the siyah kernel and the I777UCLE5 modem. I changed my APN settings around to match what I found in this thread:
It seems better than it was, but still not working properly. The connection comes and goes, when I get a connection speed test is showing about:
120ms ping
3.8Mbps DL
.4Mbps UL
But most of the time speed test won't even connect to a server.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing my phone to have service sporadically?
Maybe they're doing service in your area or having issues. Also meteorological events like solar flares and things can wreak havoc on service. May not be you.

Is my problem just some ridiculously easy thing that everyone knows so no one wants to help a noob? Or am I just getting bs answers because you don't it? "Modems don't effect signal", "are you in a deadzone?", "solar flares have been known to mess things up"
Can I give more information to help out? I'm not a noob to forums, I'm a noob to this forum, I've searched, I've read stickies, I just can't find a solution (my searching is probably not as fruitful as an experienced user's)
I haven't tried going back to gb yet, but I will tonight after work if you think that could help. I ran ics for months with no problems though, so I don't feel like that caused the problem (granted I'm on jb now, but still).
I know you guys are the ones helping me, so complaining about bs answers isn't all that smart. But answers about solar flares make it harder for other noobs to search for this problem and avoid posting.

Don't come to these forums looking for help. Then blast the people who are giving you sound advice. I have been running the same rom you posted since release. I too flashed UCLE5 because I haven't had as much luck with the standard modem Sho uses, and have great signal since flashing UCLE5. No issues here. Could be any of the number of suggestions mentioned in this thread. I would suggest you take some of the above advice, and maybe thank some of the people who gave it to you rather than being an ingrate. When you flash a modem run it for a day or so and let it settle in as well. Don't just flash it, run a speed test, and then flash another. Sometimes after flashing it seems it takes my radio's a day or so to even out.

The "service in your area" part is EXTREMELY legit; used to happen to me all the time.
Not entirely wise to criticize those trying to help you.
My problem has been going on for 3 days, both at work and at home, roughly 50 miles apart, and no one else around me has been having any problems. Also, no GPS signal... therefore I think I can eliminate both service in the area, and astrological events.
I think step one before anyone goes to the internet to ask for help from strangers, is to find someone close by and say "hey, do you have at&t? Are you having any phone problems?"

Sometimes after flashing it seems it takes my radio's a day or so to even out.

I honestly assumed he was just being a smart ass, I know I'm the one asking for help here so I'm not trying to be an ingrate. The service thing is a fairly easy thing to check though, i can't imagine someone wouldn't check that first. The solar flare thing is funny.... but not really helpful...
I didn't realize that I needed to let the modem settle in first... being a noob, I didn't even consider that. it's been about a day, with noticable improvement from when I first flashed it, but still not what I would call functionable.
the only two suggestions on the problem in this thread were trouble with the service in the area, and solar flares, I was only trying to rule those out. The suggestion on a solution, was reinstall gb. I was initially planning on doing that after work today, but now I think I'll wait for the modem to settle in longer.
Any other suggestions on what the problem could be would be helpful. Again, I wasn't trying to be ungrateful, just trying to point out that i didn't think those were legitimate suggestions on my problem. My apologies... I have used xda posts for past problems, and am immensly grateful to have a community like this around. I have been trying to obey the "suggestions for noobs" "search before you post" etc...
Are you under warranty? You may be having a hardware failure since it is affecting your radio signal and gps.

No warranty, the phone is 18 months old, I haven't ruled out hardware failure. That was actually my initial guess, but then a new modem and time seem to help slightly...
I was under the impression that the gps antenna and the cellular antenna (and the speaker) were on the same piece of hardware, and both the GPS and the radio were controlled by the modem. That could be way off though.
Not sure what modem you are useing now, but you did say with ics you were fine and I am pretty sure the UCLE5 modem was the one that came with my 4.0.3 update. It seems to work best for me. If that is the one you are currently running let it settle a bit. I have also seen some people in other phone forums here complaining of throttling of late as well. Just a thought.
Throttling would be slow speeds though right? Not the lack of ability to even send a text.
When I do have service, my DL speeds have been around 4Mbps, which I think is decent.
My problem is more like the signal fading in and out, it almost seems like when I have a good signal then try to use anything that requires data, the signal disappears, would that be throttling?
No.
His issue sounds like a hardware failure. My I777 recently started having the same problem; I tried everything from flashing different modems, returning to GB, even disassembled the phone and swapped the part that controls the signal reception from my wife's to test.. everything I tried was a no go. I eventually figured out after some intense searching that the motherboard was failing, so I decided to just get another phone. Right now my three year old son uses it to play games and stuff. I'm not saying that yours is the exact same issue, but as Red_81 suggested it may be a general hardware failure. What you need to figure out is whether this is exactly so and what is the root cause, then determine if you want to replace the failed part or just get another device. They're pretty cheap on Ebay. Hope some of this helps point you to find a solution.
