I've been using wifi tether to connect my laptop to the internet. On my wife's Epic there are no issues - it works regardless of which radios are active.
On my Evo 3D, I find that it works fine with 4G enabled (As long as there is a strong 4G signal). However, when I am on 3G, I am only able to connect to google sites.
I'm using Wifi Tether 3.0-pre14. I've tried messing around with the DNS settings in wifi tether settings to no avail.
I figure if I spell this out here, somebody might be able to tell whether this is a problem with the configuration on my Evo 3D, with Wifi Tether or with the network. Given I haven't had these issues on my wife's phone, it is either something Evo 3D related, or something to do with the particular version of wifi tether I have on my phone.
Suggestions?
I have the exact same issue, barnacle works with all sites on 3g but only Google works with WiFi tether, it drove me nuts all night last night trying to figure it out, so I gave up..........please help

Changing the DNS servers from google to Open DNS appears to have fixed it.
Interestingly OpenDNS does not think that my laptop is connected to a router with openDNS set up. So I have no clue which DNS servers tethering is actually using.
I take it back. That no longer works. 4G is fine!
This issue appears to deal with it. A few Evo 3D posts there. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1047

Like the title says. I've tried both "wifi tether for root users" and also "barnacle." Both will turn on but then I can't connect to it from my pc. Anybody else have this problem? And does anyone else know what to do to fix it? Thanks in advance.
Did u try running barnacle closing it out then using WiFi tether

Barnacle only runs Ad-Hoc on 3G. Setting in App. Some devices can't use Ad-Hoc.
Wifi Tether only seems to work on 4G.
Sprint Hot Spot (installed from a Custom ROM) runs AD (not ad-hoc) on 3G.
I can only get 3g from the native hotspot, no 4G tethering. It kicks me off 4G once I connects to native hotspot. The wireless tether starts with errors in the show log saying wifi interface failed. So basically thats a no go.

I can't get wifi tether to work for me either. Tried connecting to PS3 and it says "cannot obtain IP address" Hotspot works though.
I am on bionix 1.3.1 and have noticed that whenever I turn my wifi on it seems to not allow me data access. My web browser will not connect to a page, market won't load, and any downloads that were in progress will fail. it's as if turning on the wifi is overriding my data connection and blocking it. It says that it's connected in the menu though. Any advice?
Thanks
Edit: I just noticed when looking at my phone stats, that when I turn on my wifi my mobile network state says disconnected, and it connects again when wifi is turned off.
Also, I have an airport extreme and a mac, perhaps that is my problem. I've scoured the internet and found a bunch of info about this problem, but haven't found anything that works yet.

Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong but if you switch from wifi to 3g while downloading the download usually will fail because you were using only wifi to download the content and when that turned off it doesn't just switch to using 3g you have to manually retry the download using 3g .... when wifi and 3g are on wifi doesn't speed up the 3g instead it does the internet related work and the 3g does the text and phone call related work
that makes sense, thanks. as for the connection problem, it is definitely mac related. my wifi seems to work on other networks. I just need to figure out how to make it work with the airport. It's just weird to me that it says it's connected and shows signal bars, but won't access the internet.

so is the new problem that the airport extreme won't give wifi to your phone or that its not working at all
According to my phone I am connected via wifi to my network from the airport, however, the phone cannot access any internet functions when connected. When I disable wifi, it works fine with 3g or edge. It seems to be something with the settings on my airport, not the phone itself.

That's surprising maybe this means apple products are biased
OK, I have been frustrated with the lack of consistent/reliable wifi tether with the Photon as are many others. I live in a good 4G area but, up to now, have only been able to tether 4G via USB. Unfortunately, the awesome wifi tether app (thanks Harald Mueller and co.) still doesn't have dedicated settings for the Photon so we've all been fiddling with settings and app versions etc.. to try to get it working.
My main problems have been as follows:
1) 4G shuts off automatically after connecting and reverts to 3G
2) connection with tethering devices gets interrupted and the device no longer sees the phone. Need to restart the tether app on the phone and re-establish link with the device.
3) Can't talk on phone and tether simultaneously on 3G
4) Can't stream video to devices on 3G
etc...
The fix I found that works basically flawlessly is a jumble of different fixes other people have tried/found so I don't take credit for that but I have not seen the exact combination which work for me elsewhere so here goes and hope it helps some would-be 4G tetherers out there.
1) Install wifi tether version 3.0-pre12 ***EXPERIMENTAL*** (you have to go to the developer homepage and search for older versions)
2) Install data enabler widget from the Market
3) Wifi tether settings: samsung galaxy S, leave setup-method alone, setup wifi encryption to your preference
4) Turn off 4G
5) Turn off data via enabler widget
6) Launch wifi tether app and turn on tethering
7) Turn on 4G antenna (leave data enabler widget off!)
8) Wait for 4G data connection to appear active in the upper right of the phone
9) Connect your device via wifi and enjoy 4G tethering
Don't know why step 7 is so important but it is...
I now can pull 5-7 Mbps easily through the phone and stream flawlessly. I also don't get the mobile IP registration error anymore. Can also phone/tether simultaneously.
Only problem I have seen with this method is that after closing tethering down, the 3G data sometimes doesn't want to kick back in. Toggling data enabler will usually fix this although one time I did have to reboot the phone.
hope this works for others too!
will try later. thanks for the tip
it worked. thanks, however i used wifi tether 3.1 beta 7

Used Beta 11
Awesome, thanks for the info. seems to work with beta 11 and tornedo Root.
Thanks for bringing this up - there was another post regarding this here :

I was wondering whether anyone else has been successfully using the 4g wifi method as snappydave [OP] and these steps...
I haven't been using wifi-tether in a while (on my shabby torpedo rooted stock photon) since the google wifi 3.0 beta5
It would be nice to see the idea of being able to tether to 4g (in my area) and connect to a laptop and still use my phone to send/receive voice calls.
bottom line : does the data enabler widget and google wifi tether work well with these steps and 4g with in/out voice simultaneously? Or should I just stick with the google wifi tether on 3g and deal with the dropped connection on incoming voice calls? I can't afford to lose voice functionality - at least with the google wifi tether when I had used it, my tethered connection would drop from my laptop and then pick back up after an incoming call - sucks that I would lose the net connection - most important in case of something that requires a stable connection (e.g. video chat-skype / large file download)
Thanks to anyone in advance for further clarifications - cheers.

use search function. this issue has already been raised.
Anyone with the Amaze 4G for T-Mobile USA notice that it often doesn't connect to remembered WiFi networks even though they are in range and it will only connect if you go to view WiFi settings/networks under settings then it connects?
Also, anyone have any issues connecting to WiFi networks where the SSID is not being broadcast? I can get it to connect initially but it will never reconnect to a hidden SSID network that it "remembers"?
Using stock gingerbread ROM.
I notice this happens every now and then... I will have to open my WiFi networks, then before I can click on the network, it refreshes. It happens only rarely for me, but I have noticed it at times
