[Q] Is it really 16gb internal??? - Motorola Photon 4G

Okay, let me know if i'm way off base here, or just not taking formats into account, but when i received my photon (yay sprint premier) a few days ago, i noticed that it only said i had 8.47gb free of space, now i already know 3gb is dedicated for something in the phone, really don't remember, and i tossed my old evo 8gb sd in for more space, but why the misleading ad of 16gb internal storage!?!

there is 16gigs of internal storage, but the amount available is not given on the box. Yes this is misleading, but they did not lie.
2.8gig's for installing apps makes me not care that another 5gigs is being used for Webtop. So all in all 8+gigs for video/pics/extra app content is more then enough. And like you I threw in my old 8gig SD and have the same amount of storage as my old Vibrant now, but I have more space for apps. So I'm a happy camper with that and the rest of the phone

Yep, it's 16GB of total internal storage, partitioned among the system, Webtop, etc.
Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0: 15.9 GB, 15914762240 bytes
~500MB for /system
~3GB for /data
~650MB for /cache
~1.3GB for /osh (webtop)
~350MB for /preinstall
~9GB for /sdcard (internal storage)
And a lot of little partitions dividing up the space even further.

Yes. Mind you, repartitioning the internals of your phone is NOT for the faint of heart.

Yeah not sure why you would want to gain that space back anyways. 16gb sd are pretty cheap.

Shoot 8gigs is even cheaper, not by much, and 16 gig's in a phone is really good, especially with unlimited data to stream music from the internet via your provider of choice.

I'm still unclear on the amount of space there is for apps without using an SD card. If someone could clear this up further please.
My phone reads as follows:
Application storage - 2.65gb available space (out of how much?)
Internal storage - 8.92gb total 8.61gb available (what is this space used for?)
Where is the remaining to get 16?
Exactly how much total space does this phone have, without an sd card, for installed apps?

How was that info found? Spare Parts?
That breakdown doesn't equal 16gb unless I'm missing something. Also, that breakdown says there is 9gb for internal storage but what about apps? Phone says there is only 2.65gb available. Need some clarification please.

I got a 32gb on ebay for around that price. You can find the 16gb even cheaper.

Cheap is never good unless it is a good 'deal'. This is a great deal for a 32gb micro, class 10 which for me is very important. I think anything lower than a class 6 is a waste. You get more errors, file corruption and just failure when you get the cheap ones. Thats why now when you buy an evo/evo3d they are at least class 4's which when I bought mine they were class 2's. Guess they got enough complaints.
For me, Ebay is never a good choice unless you know it is what it says it is, and with electronics you never know until you actually get it.

[Q] HTC Thunderbolt Internal Storage

I was poking around the app SystemPanel (available on the market) and I noticed that the internal storage only adds up to 4gb. This is including the System Storage(849.5MB), Application Storage(2670.8MB), and The cache(424.7MB). Now I don't know much about the file structure, and I am probably missing something, but I thought that the internal storage was 8GB?
Anybody else run into this discovery?

I'm going to venture to guess one of two things is going on:
HTC fat fingered the spec-sheet and everybody else copied it without doing any research (Alternate: Last minute change and their tech sheet was never updated)
There really is 8GB of eMMC, but the "missing" 4GB is hidden, disabled, or otherwise unaccounted for at the moment.
In any event, until someone does a tear down we probably wont know for absolute certainty.
It's not "missing." Pulled from the other thread.

There is 5.00168gbs(or 5121.72mb) on the system partition according to Root Explorer and a calculator. Most of it is free (empty) space, though.
5.00168 + the ~2.5gb user storage partition = ~7.5gb.
This is the same as the MT4G and G2, both of which had the same advertised 8gb internal storage I believe.

Most likely this will be impossible.
The eMMC's generally used by HTC can only be partitioned once, period. At least, this was the case with the G2 and the MT4G which had the same "missing" storage space.

Yes, I realize that G2 =/= Thunderbolt. However, it's very likely that HTC uses similiar processes for all of it's phones.

Yeah I hasn't finished reading that thread when I replied in here, so I didn't realize the space had been located.
I know the way HTC does eMMC makes it a one time partition, but since its there as "system" according to that post, shouldn't that mean it could be utilized by us somehow? I don't entirely understand all of the nuance to androids partition madness, but I'm an old hand with linux. My first thought runs to making a loopback in some of the free space and mounting it in a user assessable area a la how you can mount iso's and swap files. Might not be the fastest but for data that doesn't change often it could work. Hell I'm pretty sure thats all the ext2/4 hacks on the sgs phones are doing to avoid rfs.

[Q] Recommend MicroSD for rooting?

The manual states 32GB microSD should be used. How much do I need for rooting the gtablet? If 4 or 8GB microSD is enough will it work right? What is the best brand?
Thanks!
That's a good question, I had wondered that myself. I figured I would pick up a 16 gig for storage, and smaller / cheaper ones for backing up and switching out ROMS. If 4's would work in general that would be great (and dirt cheap).
Anyone more experienced in this area care to chime in with their experiences?
Thanks!
Up to 32GB sized cards can be used.
Grab any size you like.
Try to grab on of at least Class 6 rating or better. The higher the class number the faster the card is.
Is 4 or 8GB big enough for rooting?
Yes, consider the card as used only for media storage like music or movies, book etc, you wll need it only when you manage to fill the internal 16gb
So if you need only to root even 2 gb is plenty

Thanks! That's what I needed to know. I think I have a 2 gig from an old BBerry in the drawer at home.
You really don't need a card to root at all.
Get ADB setup properly to your PC and you can transfer all the files you need straight to internal memory (which will show up as /sdcard).
good point! depend on how you like to spend your friday night I guess
I have a 16 GB with about 4 GB space left, can I use it without erasing the stuff I saved on it?
Thanks

[Q] 16gb vs 32gb version.....is it worth the extra money?

About to purchase the tmobile galaxy s 3 and ive noticed they come as a 16gb rom or a 32gb rom. Not sure if it is worth the extra $50 or not. What do you guys think? Not exatly sure what the benefit in the long run will be if so. Please explain if possible, thanks.
I don't think it's worth the extra $50. If you really want 32GB, you could just buy an external microSD card and stick it in (up to 64GB I believe). I got the 16GB phone and put in my 16GB microSD card which costs much less than $50 these days. Plus, you'd have do wait until they get the 32GB version of the phone.
I dont think its that necessary. You can expand with a microSD card up to 64GB, and you also get 50GB of DropBox storage when you buy the phone. Im just gonna get the 16GB White model when it comes out.
I'm noticias 100% sure in S3 case but usually internal memory is faster than external cards. You must consider it.

the reason everyone is going bat**** over the SGSIII is because of the microSD slot. there's absolutely no reason for you to get a 32GB phone since you can pop in a 64GB microSD card if you needed more space. better question to ask yourself: what is the capacity of your current phone? if you maxed out, double the space and that's what you should be aiming for on the SGSIII. :good:

Actually, Motorola partitioned the RAZR to use up almost 1/2 of the internal space for the OS and applications. Then they "generously" give you the rest as storage. I personally don't mind it because I barely use the 32GB on my phone, but if I didn't have that space, I would be rather upset.

SD cards don't usually come on odd sizes. Almost always a power of 8. Weird.
Also, just because you bought it yesterday doesn't mean it's not bad. Ever heard of manufacturing defects? Id be willing to bet it's faulty, but you could always try reformatting it to see if that works or helps.

If you paid $10 for a "125gb" card then that card is fake. Its probably a 16gb card made to look like 128. Try copying 125gb to it and see if can hold

It is almost certainly a fake with only 4-16 GB or so of actual memory, but which self-misrepresents as 128 GB and never returns any error writing (even if it is not writing anything at all).
Copy about 16 GB of actual (lerge) files on it and then compare by content the original files and the copy. Then remember that saying - if it looks too good to be true then probably something is wrong.
definitely fake one. $10 for 125g(??), too good to be true.
