[Q] Did I brick my Droid X2? - Motorola Droid X2

Need help please!!! I rooted my DX2 few weeks ago using Gingerbreak. Everything went well all this time. Today I tried to unroot the phone. Because I was going to up date to Gingerbread. I defrost all the frozen apps, deleted all the rooted apps. Then I tried to do a factory hard reset by holding power button and volume down button and going in to fastboot, as I push the volume button up, the phone just went dead. I cannot power it up to do anything. When can I do to get this phone in to recovery mode or at lease power it up....

Follow the instructions here EXACTLY and you will be all set, if it doesn't boot at all pull the battery for 30 seconds and try again

Thanks for your quick post. I followed directions and I am stuck at step # 4 . RSD starts to flash but then stops with a massage "phone is not compatible with multi-interface super file. (X-703B); phone connected. Fail..

Did you run RSD as administrator?

Yes I have tried with admin login. I am running Win 7 pro on my laptop. Keep getting the same error. That my phone is not compatiable...What is my next move...???

I actually found someone with this problem in another forum, their problem was they renamed the .gz file instead of using 7zip to extract it, had the exact same error. not sure if its the same issue hope it helps

No, I didn't change the file ext. I tried it again and this time it was going fine at end of flashing it said "powerup your phone maually" which I did. How do I know if my phone has been flashed?

Thank you so much for your help..

I've seen a few posts now of people getting that error message because they tried to flash the SBF before extracting it from the ZIP. That needs to be put in the HOWTO tutorial.
Also, RSD Lite likes to warn you that disconnecting your phone can cause permament damage even though it's finished flashing. (Progress is at 100% and it tells you to reboot your phone manually). That should be put in there, too. The phone is flashed but RSD doesn't always properly disconnect on it's own but as long as the progress is 100% and it tells you that it's complete and you can reboot your phone then you are done.

It does say in dag425 howto post that you need to extract with 7zip, I've thought about asking him to capitalize it or somehow make it draw more attention, think I will PM him about this
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App

Ask him to also mention that when progress is at 100% and RSD Lite tells you that it is finished and you can manually boot your phone that you can disconnect your phone regardless of the warnings from RSD Lite that disconnecting your phone can damage it because it won't disconnect on it's own no matter how long ya wait. It did that to me and I thought I was gonna ruin my phone!

Thanks for all the help with SBF. I am having another issue now. after following the directions the phone is up an running. Instead of using prerooted gingerbread, I installed from OTA ver 2.3.3.
I have been trying to use gigerbreak.apk to root it again but after all the step, the phone just runs the exploit. I let it ran over 15 mins to no avail. I have tried 3 time and no success. Am I doing something wrong? Is there another exploit for DX2 2.3.3?

the new 2.3.3 isn't rootable. gingerbreak doesn't work. hence why a pre-rooted version was created. you need to SBF all over again, wipe your phone and install the pre-rooted version.
the steps are SBF & WIPE Froyo
GINGERBREAK while on Froyo (root your phone)
Install Custom Recovery on your Rooted phone (because it won't work unless your phone is rooted anyway)
Boot into Recovery
run SD : update.zip (with the update.zip on your external SD CARD)
takes a lil while and your phone might boot loop a few times. Just let it do it's thing and you'll have rooted gingerbread.

Thanks Calcobrena, You have saved me a lot of time. Now I have SBF my phone and rooted it with gingerbreak.apk, I want to install prerooted GB. I have downloaded recovery and the update for GB. I can't seem to install recovery file on my phone. I went in to astro file manager and it does shows that file is on the SD but when I try to extract, I am getting nothing. I am sure I am missing something, please help again. Thanks

You need to open the recovery apk and click 'install recovery' then plug the phone into the wall outlet and press 'recovery mode'

Please forgive my ignorance, I am new at this but do have computer background. I guess I haven't been able to explain it well. I have downloaded the bootstrap on my SD card, When I use ASTRO file app and go to EXT.SD, I see the file there in RAR format. I click on it and nothing happens. If I hold it down and from the pop up menu choose Extract, it shows copied 0 files and Directory is empty. I have reading all kind of posts on line but can't find anything that can help. What the hell am I doing wrong....??

Basically what EvilTim said. A lot of the files you will be dealing with are in ZIP or RAR compressed formats. I use 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) to get them out, so head over there and pick that up if you need to extract files. It's much easier just to transfer the files to your phone unzipped rather than using your phone's file manager to do that for you.
The app file extension is .apk so make sure that's whatyou are sending over to your phone. After that, just open it.
In the app you'll see an INSTALL button at the top. Click it and give it SUPERUSER permissions when the screen pops up. THEN, click the button below the install button to run it. It will reboot your phone. Plug your phone into the wall charger and it will boot up into custom recovery. From there just run SDCARD: Update.zip

the problem was Astro file app, it does not support RAR files. I downloaded Andro zip from the market and that was it.. Every worked perfect... Thanks for all the help guys.

I know there are threads about this but none helped me. I rooted my phone the other day but i cant figure out how to set up adb. under my androidsdk folder it says adb is in there. but whenever i type it in the command spot no serial number comes up for my phone and when i try the manual part it doesnt work.. i was following the Unlocker tutorial.. please help i want ROMS!
did you install the adb driver from htc?
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html
There's the address for the guide that I followed. Its extremely easy, just follow the instructions closely.
Thanks! i tried that b4 and it didnt work i guess i messed up before.. Thanks a lot
Hey there. I had run into a similar situation the first time I tried to root my phone. I tried a bunch of different tutorials and they all just ended up giving me a headache. I THINK I used the unlockr.com tutorial first and I ended up installing a leak version of 2.1 which made me unable to actually root the phone. I hope that isn't the case and I can't be 100% certain since I tried doing this a few different ways from a few different sites. The best way to check this is to go to your settings and look at the About Phone section and check to see if your version of 2.1 says release-keys or test-keys. Release-bad, test-good. If you have release-keys then your best bet is waiting till they finally figure out how to root that version. The devs have been working on it for a long time and I think they are losing ambition, but there is still a glimmer of hope. If you have the test keys version, then you should be good and probably just misspelled something in setting up the adb/changing to the right directory, or in making sure you have the latest USB drivers, have USB debugging on, have your phone on charge only (not disk drive), etc.
everything worked well until i tried to load the evil eris rom i put the zip file in my root folder and when i wiped my phone then tried to load it it said load aborted... any ideas?

Hmm... "put the zip file in my root folder"
1. You want to copy the zip file to the "root" of your sdcard. That means it is on the sdcard, but not in any folders.
2. Then boot into Recovery (Hold volume up + power on)
3. Then select flash zip from sdcard.
4. Then choose the zip of the rom you want.
5. When finished reboot.
6. Then sit back and wait for it to finish. You should be good to go.

NEW mytouch slide root

hi... this post is for those who wants to root the mytouch quickly and easily without even using a computer. these directions will be step by step, because i know how frustrating it is when someone gives a broken step expecting you to fill in the blanks.
note
im not responsible for what happens to your phone. i am simply showing you hope when all else fails. now lets get started.
ALL CREDIT GOES TO CLOCKWORK FOR HIS UNBELIEVABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANDROID COMMUNITY. THANK YOU
first things first, you need a mytouch slide, your phone charging, rom manager free from the android market, universal androot which i will post the link below, and finally a custom rom from xda developers. pick anyone you like preferably cyanogen mod.
step 1. take the custom rom you downloaded from either your pc or from your phone: pc-> if you downloaded it off your pc, then you need to connect your phone to your pc and put the custom rom file on the root of your sd. you dont have to rename it, just leave as is. phone-> if you downloaded it off your phone, then i hope you heard of astro file manager from the market?! you need that to explore your sd card from your phone and find the custom rom on your downloads folder, and edit, move, to the root of your sd card. then paste.
step 2. now you need to get the universal androot apk from the link below. once you download it, make sure you put it anywhere on your phones sd card. once it's there, use astro once more to find that apk on your sd card and install it by clicking on it.
step 3 now all you need is rom manager free from the android market. i hope that you know how to find and install it.
now that you are all situated, the real part begins, and i will also explain why we are doing it this way along the process okay.
step 4 open up the universal androot apk on your phone and it should look pretty simple. the only thing you do here is make sure that root temporary(unroot after reboot) is checked. then hit root . you should get a sucess and the superuser apk showing up in your app drawer. if yes then proceed to step 5.
step 5 now that you have temporary root, this will give you permission to use root apks until reboot. luckily i found out that rom manager has the ability to flash clockwork recovery while your phone is still on. well this is what your going to do. open up rom manager, and the very top option is "flash Clockwork Recovery" hit this and it should install it. after that click on "install rom from sd card." find your custom rom that you put on here from before, and click on it, then check both boxes: backup existing rom, and wipe data and cache, and hit ok. now hit ok to go into recovery. if you get a superuser request at this point then congratulations, its working. allow it , and proceed to step 6 .
step 6 now your phone is restarting and should back up the system and start installing the custom rom. if for some reason it doesnt install right there, and takes you to clockwork recovery(blue words), then go to step 7. if not then step 8
step 7 if you are in clockwork recovery and dont know what the heck youre at, well in short, your at a screen where your allowed to install any rom meant for the mytouch slide including the 2.2 froyo. yay! navigation is simple if you know how. volume buttons are for navigation up and down, and the camera button on the right bottom is for selecting, while the power button at the top of the phone is to go back one. got it ? all you want to do is intall your custom rom if you havent yet. you might first want to do the wipe data/ factory reset, to make sure everything goes smoothly on your new rom. after that go back to the screen with all the options, and go to install zip for sdcard. then it is important to choose zip from sdcard, as i have no idea what the apply sdcard:update.zip will do to your phone. after you click choose update, you should be in a familiar area: your sdcard. find your custom rom and install it. it will work if its a complete and compatible rom for your phone. once done hit reboot system now and presto step 8.
step 8 ur done lol. enjoy your new rom. misc. if you ever want to go back into clockwork recovery, then go into your normal recovery by power + volume down while your phone is turned off. then hit recovery option. youll notice that you are at the normal recovery. push power+volume up for new set of options. theres an option call apply zip update. click on the and boom, you should pop up in clockwork recovery.
universal androot since i am a new user, i cannot post links but here is an attachment, and if your not signed in then you will find the program by going to 4shared.com and searching for UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk uploaded by chrisjcj27. thanks and good luck

Followed your steps completely. After i get root and flash CW Recovery, I go to install the custom rom and make a Nandroid backup.........it restarts phone and take me to the phone with a question mark (i think thats what it was) and then reboots normally into the stock rom. It says its failing to installl the update package which im assuming is CW Recovery.

ill go back and re check everything. this worked for me 3 times over. gimme a sec. ill make this work. sorry for the inconvenience oh by the way. can anyone confirm that they have tried this on a mytouch that hasnt recieved the new ota update. this is the only phone i have tested it on. im not sure if it has anything to do with it.
Tried it about 6 times now. Even downloaded terminal to ensure i have root before carrying on. Its not letting the update.zip that Rom Manager installs on the SD card run at all. Its saying its not signed and then it fails?
Androot is only able to give us a temporary root, therefore the bootloader is still locked and it will not allow us to actually get into CW at all. Correct?

This method was developed by ChiefzReloaded, a dev we all know and love. He knows his stuff.

You understand that the default launcher in Cyanogenmod7 (CM7) is ADW correct? I just would hate for you to go through the touch n go process of flashing CM7 and end up hating it because of this
Well... you can switch away from ADW. For instance, I switched to the GO launcher, and it ran like a dream.
Alright, here's a n00b guide.
0)Download these files to you SD card: http://www.mediafire.com/?dfjjclddzq6fl5q, http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip
1) Flash this in Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=657960&d=1310959789
2) Boot into recovery by turning off the phone/pulling battery and holding volume up, volume down and power at the same time
3) Select wipe cache, then select wipe data
4) Select install zip from sd card or something like that and flash CM7 (The file you downloaded from mediafire above)
5)Once phone finishes installing, hit reboot phone or if your phone is off turn it back on
6) Hold down power button, select reboot, select recovery
7) From here, select install zip from sd card again, and install the gapps from the second link.
8) Reboot, and enjoy. If you don't like adw, install GO launcher from the market

Install this on your computer: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7946i8tdbe0yv50
Open Odin, remove your phone's battery, hold the "volume down" button on your phone while plugging it into your computer and a little android with a shovel should come up.
On your computer, download the file from step 1. In odin, click the PDA button (NOT THE PHONE BUTTON) and select that downloaded file. Hit start or flash or whatever the button like that says. It will take a while. Once done, you will have cwm, so do step 2.
Once in CWN, use the volume buttons to go up and down and use the power button as the "enter button". Follow the rest of the steps from there.
Also, GAPPS is just the technical name for that second file you downloaded. Install it through CWM exactly as the steps say.

Gapps...is abbreviated for google apps. Ie. Google talk, gmail, google voice, google chrome to phone, ect...this is a zip file package that contains a lot of googles apps that are not pre packaged into the rom
Odin is a software program for pc to push a modified recovery program or complete stock rom files, or patches and some other goodies and this recovery abbreviated cwm(clock work mod ) is the program you use to install custom roms and kernels. All odin file formats will end in .tar while files for flashing via recovery end in .zip

Just to let you know, you should probably read up on some more of the threads in the general and development section after you fix your phone before trying this again. You really need to know what you're doing or you'll break your phone for real next time.

While skafan is right, you probably won't completely bork your device but you can get in deep real quick if you screw up anything major...like flashing a rom not for the fascinate. Go to the link he posted and do it exactly to return to complete stock and then read read read before flashing again, but it is very hard to completely destroy our phones besides physically smashing it. His warning is of just cause....that said..everything I learned(and I'm sure some will agree with me) for the most part is out of necessity..meaning I started tinkering with my phone and learned what I had to as I made mistakes and needed to know how to get out of a boot loop or force closes. There were even a few times where I thought I just turned my fassy into an expensive paper weight! You'll get there and, if nothing else borking builds character!

i followed those instructions to the letter, same result, success(0) failed (1)
this sucks
borking does not build character for me
it engenders a sense of helplessless and makes me cry

[Q] CWM installation aborted NO MATTER WHAT!!!

No matter what I do, I cannot get a single thing to flash anymore with CWM. I'm on the dark side rom, unlocked bootloader & rooted, 4.5.91, and using romracers 4.0.1.5 cwm recovery. I even tried tenfars and the one rom manager gives me, but the problem persisted. Is there any fix for this because it is getting VERY frustrating!
The only fix available would be to figure out what you've done. The CWM versions all work fine and don't require a fix. It's something at your end and with the information you've given, there's not much to go on.
It must corrupt the files when I transfer them from the computer to the phone. I've downloaded straight from the source and MANY other sources of the exact same rom/kernal/ect... and it all ends up not working. Is it better to download on the phone? Oh, missed one detail but I don't think it matters, I'm using a mac and when I download a file it auto unzipps, then I just re-compress it and throw it on the phone. Would that affect anything?
change ur cable... try different machine...
Same problem
I've encountered the same problem! I flashed darkside on my rooted AT&T Atrix, (unlocked bootlader, rooted). My friend borrowed my phone and saw the AT&T system update and installed it. the phone reboots and I couldn't move past that, then i got the little green android dude with the /!\ sign behind him. Tried factory resetting, restoring from backup, and even flashing over Gingerbread, but nothing worked! If you have found a fix, an answer would really be appreciated!

Not the same problem! You tried to OTA on an unlocked bootloader.

Would you happen to know how I might go about fixing it?

That's probably your problem right there. Use a Windows machine to download to, put the zip file on your phone from Windows, do a FULL fastboot wipe, and try flashing the ROM. (Or download right to your phone).
Sorry, I don't use a mac, so can't help there. I can tell you that just zipping files without the correct compression settings will cause the flash to fail.
e.g. If using 7-Zip you need to set Archive format to "zip" and Compression level to "store" when creating flashable zip files or they won't work.
In any event, do a FULL fastboot wipe before flashing:
reboot to recovery
wipe dalvik
wipe cache
reboot to fastboot
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase webtop
fastboot erase preinstall
fastboot reboot (to recovery)
flash ROM
There are a couple of scripts in the forums which are almost completely automated to do this.
Actually I figured this out forever ago (moved on to new phone), but I'll still help. Anyway download the file DIRECTLY to your phone, no computers!! Then place it on root of sd card (for convenience, you don't have to) and flash. Problem solved! if that doesn't work, the file is most likely corrupt or the way your phone downloaded it is outta wack. Hope this helped

Please see my post right before your post. Your problem was downloading to a MAC and the files being unzipped. Then when you zipped them back up it was not done correctly. Computers are not the problem!

[Q] How do you switch to charge only mode when you can't function your phone?

my recovery never loads through.
Its there. however it sits on the dual core technology screen when plugged into the wall. i even tried the battery-less plug into wall -- trick, it is still sitting at that screen.
its been roughly 3 hours - i'd assume it should have gone through by now.
that aside the rom boots however it is at the initial setup page and doesn't allow me to process the initial setup due to spam force close.
i have the sbf file and know how to use it, what i don't know how to do is get my phone to allow me to use the sbf file when i can't control it. the phone can't be in charging mode without something ignoring the force closes briefly.
i had read somewhere to use launcher pro, using the "hold search and say the command"
it doesn't seem to do anything no matter what i say nor how long i hold it for.
So if my phone is completely screwed thats that. i guess it comes down to are there any options i haven't exhausted yet?
or. can you switch charge only mode through some other means other than the soft key press in a menu i can't access?
EDIT: i looked through a couple of the options in the regular recovery. BP SW Bypass RSD is at the moment letting me see it to use RSD on it. hopefully meaning i can just sbf and move on.
EDIT: Failed flashing process. Unable to retrieve initialization value from INI file (0x7029)
bah just when i thought i had something.
You have to hit INSTALL RECOVERY before you go into recovery mode.

i did hit install recovery, this is how i installed the rom - eclipse 0.6 from sd which caused all of the problems in the first place.
I think you have to use the plain RSD mode not the one you are using.
Also the voice search thing is just to kick you into the browser so you can backdoor into the market and install a launcher. I installed zeam that way and I was off to the races.

jeffgarret, i attempted this as well and i'm getting the same problem. it can't read my ini file or something of that nature...
Code:
Failed flashing process. Unable to retrieve initialization value from INI file (0x7029)
this is what it gives me for both modes.
i get this error before the above error (before i actually "start" it)
Code:
Chipset type 53 is not supported
I would try re-downloading the sbf file in case something is buggered with it. Also I believe it is zipped. Regardless of what zip program you have, download and use 7zip for it.

so what you're saying is -- what i'm using should work, but isn't due to some random issue somewhere....
Every time I flashed a rom I had to hit install again or it would sit at Motorola logo forever
Also that sbf error definitely sounds like you need to use 7zip like
other guy said. I tried winzip, winrar, and gzip and had errors with all 3, other people say they work but 7zip works for everyone
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
i used universal unzip before (which acts sort of like 7zip... only different)
EDIT: it seems RSD is still giving me the same errors:
freshly downloaded sbf and i even used 7zip.
which probably means the error is actually the real error. so something is messy with my ini ... or something
P.S. i did use it as administrator (every time)
Can you get the rom to boot now? If not can you get to stock recovery and wipe everything then try to get the rom to boot.
Also you may know this but if you are on a desktop sometimes you have to use the back usb ports to RSD.

Sometimes the drivers don't install right, I didn't have that problem but some people have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver when they get errors and it worked for them. What version of rsd are you using? I think 5.3.1 is the one I used. There are newer versions but I havnt used so I can't say if they work.

Are you using power and volume up for RSD MODE on ur phone? I believe that is the way you need to do it. That is how I always have. And like evil Tim said. If u r using the newer RSD lite floating around then try old faithful 5.3.1
Sorry if my suggestions have been tried or mentioned. Its all I can think of for now
going to attempt your different version of RSD lite.
heh... i was using 4.8 from back when i would restore my Droid X
hopefully this is the final step i need to do...
EDIT: well it has started the process, i'd imagine i'm good to go.
i was able to get it into charge mode by restarting my phone a bunch of times and one of the times it happened to let me scroll the notification bar down (usually its blocked by the initial setup)
Thanks for everyone's support and ideas, i thought i was out of luck; but it looks like its all good.
Glad to hear it !!!
Thanks for the report back. I was wondering how ya made out.
Im assuming it was the RSDlite version that changed the outcome? Or was it u being able to get charged?

So far I have yet to see someone HARD BRICK their x2. I can't see it happening unless it's someone messing with bootloader partitions and signature and such. Though I've read that sbf isn't really a FULL partition included. I was a bit thrown off at how after I sbf first time when I complete deleted my build.prop and other things before I knew better, that I had the same wallpaper as before sbf. Lol
It was the version of rsdlite more than the getting it back to charge mode. Basically eclipse remix had a bug in their initial setup (which has been fixed) I just had all sorts of little problems here and there such as having the older rsdlite which I hadn't even thought about updating.
