Never realized how pathetic 4G really is! - HTC EVO 3D

Went to Daytona for a few days and was excited to get to try 4G for the first time. Had my Evo 4G for a year and never got to try it because, well, it's available about nowhere. So I get there and I see 4G! on the notification bar. Turned it on just to see "Scanning... Disconnected...Scanning...Disconnected". At first I thought maybe my WiMax stuff got killed when I rooted so I tried my wife's 3vo (which has never seen root): same deal.
Called Sprint and long story short, they said, "Oh, you can't be in a building... got to be on the street." I was right in the middle of the 4G Sprint coverage on the map but I noticed if you zoom in far enough, there are only tiny pockets (like a block in size) where it works in buildings. I actually went to one of those areas. Didn't work there either. Had to be outside. Worked OK outside.
I'm surprised with all the talk about 4G and "I have it" and "I don't", no one has ever mentioned the fact that it only works if you go outside, face the 4G tower, and stick a fork up your arse for better reception.
Used 3G the whole time I was there. It worked. 4G was useless.
Is LTE any better?

After trying 4g in Chicago suburbs, Northern Atlanta, and Knoxville plus smaller lesser known towns that also carry 4g, I learned to just stay on 3g and forget bothering with the hassle of 4g. Its a joke. 3g is fine and fast enough.

Depends on the coverage laid but yeah the 2.5Ghz band is ****ty, that's why.

I must be fortunate, because the Las Vegas / Henderson area are smothered with 4G everywhere I go. I can even connect to it inside casinos/hotels on the strip. Sitting in my bedroom right now i have all 3 bars and am getting 9mb down and 1.4mb up, which is typically what I see all the time. I've never been in another 4G market except for Boston, and I got decent service there too. The only time I really find it to blow is when driving. It doesn't hand off from one tower to the next smoothly, and it will drop out for a minute before it reconnects.

Denver 4g is the same for me. I get decent speeds out side, or in my bedroom with a huge window facing the tower. Take 10 steps away from the window however, and bye bye 4g. What can ya do...

There's no reason to call 4G trash when you haven't experienced it. I live in the heart of a 4G area which is in Chicago. Previously owned the OG Evo and now the E3D and I've never had a issue with 4G. Stop your trolling submit your biased comments else where.

I live in Oregon. And yes, it sucks something terrible while inside. I still get it on some occasions. But when I'm home I'm on wifi, when I'm at others houses I'm on their wifi.
When I'm out and about driving around or in a store I'm on 4G without much issue. And I average 6mb now. Peak at 11mb and lowest is 2mb. I'm totally OK with it. Of course I would be beyond d thrilled if 4G was moved to the 800mhz spectrum.

I stayed at a hotel in Philly with 4G everywhere.
Speeds were very fast and I had constant signal inside my hotel room.

Being someone who travels the US for a living, I use 4G everywhere its available. I dont pay for hotel internet, so I use wireless tether. The speeds I see are faster than WiFi... The connection is always great... Perhaps your phone is trash? Not sure, but when I have 4G, I use it and am always happy with the way it performs.

i had 4G/WiMax in Costa Mesa, CA where i worked, and it was fast has hell inside of the office. (10down/2up) - outside was 14down/4up
the best speeds (and for some reason, the lowest signal) was near the loading dock - 16down/5up
cant wait for coverage in San Diego.

I live in rochester,ny. 4g abundant. 5mb to 10mb average

You will be waiting along time for Lightsquared's 4g, if it ever happens. Their interference issue with GPS has not been solved and when they moved their signal to a frequency farther away from GPS's freq it didn't help. Every aviation group, FAA, military, civillian gps manufacturers and now the agricultural gps users have formed a no go line in the sand and congress is on board now. Lightsquared is going to have to go back to the drawing board and figure their **** out.

Sprint 3G Speed Improvement?!?!?!?!

Has anyone seen a speed improvement for their 3G like this? I'm wondering if this is real or someone faking it. I could see this being Wimax but not 3G. This would be awesome if it is true!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W5kmsBXVso
Considering the upload speeds for mobile on sprint is 1.5Mbps, i highly doubt this.
True. However, LTE tests were also ran in Houston. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

The ping on Wimax in houston is anywhere from 120-500ms and the max bandwidth I have seen is ~6mbps.
at first i completely doubted this as all his videos about sprint speeds were posted in the last day or so least his two LTE ones and this 3G one were.
But when you check his IP its deff a sprint pcs ip as they own the ones in the 66.87.xxx.xxx pretty much.
http://en.ntunhs.net/IPInfo/EN/66/87.htm
other question is why and how would a kid like that get hands on a device like their new LTE stuff?....

Just watched the vid, fake as hell. I think it'll rain candy when sprint's 3g will be about 1mb constantly.
At work, using 3g I get a consistant 3+ mb from 6am til 10 am, after that its between 1.5 and 2.5 and no where near 22ms ping.... lowest I've got was like 85
If I could have even a quarter of those speeds where I live and my commute, I'll love Sprint forever.
Sad to even say that lol. HSPA+ ftw...
I can survive with 4-5 Mbps. What I need is unlimited data with no throttling, including when I use wifi tether.

One of Aurora's CLEAR Wimax towers is currently degraded and is running below the normal speed, I have several open CLEAR tickets for that area ... **** I installed a customer on Tuesday with an external antenna and got a 32db CINR (5 Bars) and they were only pulling down 3Mbs... normally a 10Mbs area .. I opened a CQ ticket and sent the report to LM RF Team to see if anything can be done because it is a real pain right now...
That ping is wow worthy. I never seen lower than 80. The upload is like an un-throttled Wimax upload.

In the last week my evo 3d has increased in download and upload speed.
I've never been above 1.5mbps down and 1.0mbps up but this week i'm 2.5 down and 1.5 up.
So I am a little depressed. I just checked that Sprint website that says the recent and future upgrades to all of the towers in your city. Most of the upgrades are done (and about 80-90% of the upgrades in the towers near me are done) and I am still getting sub 100k speeds down at 10:15 PM. I guess the 3g speeds aren't going to budge here in san antonio despite what their press releases say. Luckily I get decent 4g and Nocturnal Xplode keeps my battery humming along.

What's your decided with out 4g LTE coverages

I'm currently eligibility for upgrade
Oh ya finally after two year O EVO. I wish to get this wonderful EVO 4g LTE but no coverage LTE
So now I don't want to go down from 4g Wimax to 3g hmmmmm coz I live in San Francisco. We don't have sprint LTE this year. I think my decided to wait at list until my upgrade is expire.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Wimax sucked anyways, Im in STL and it was one of the first in the country, and it was GREAT the first couple months.... then it became worse than 3g.
Its expected that the San Francisco area will have LTE within the next 6 months as it, parts of New York, Florida, and a couple other states are listed for Round 2 of the LTE rollout, which is expected to be completed before the end of 2012. Sprint's LTE network is currently being installed in the Los Angeles area by Alcatel Lucent.
The 4g was never an issue with me. I've had 4g since almost day 1. The only time I use it is for downloading large files. I can probably count on all my fingers and toes how many times that has happened. My 3g speeds are good; usually around 1-1.2 mb/s, and that is usually plenty fast.
Or I use wifi when available. Until they figure out a way to keep it from killing your battery, I probably won't use it very often.
If their work continues the way it is and on schedule I should have LTE by the end of the year..But personally I dont mind if I have to wait..Im in my truck 10 hours a day with a verizon 3G/4G LTE Hot Spot for work for my laptop and wifi needs.
Pre-ordered and waiting for release.

We never had wimax in Reno, so the 4g on my Evo 4g was pretty useless to me. With Sprint who knows if we will see lte before my new Evo 4g lte is up for upgrade.
When I got my og evo on release day the nice folks at the Sprint store said we would get 4g by the end of the year. So I am pretty skeptical whenever I here we will get something from Sprint.
I use my connection at home for my phone. My job takes me all over the state, so 3g is what I get most of the time for gps navigation. If LTE will be as fast as they say, I might just use it for internet at home. I live in Kansas City with a 4g tower 1/4 mile away. I get full bars 4g currently.

never did use 4g much even though i had a tower around the corner. had to keep the phone plugged in or else batt would die. 4g tethering worked well when i had no internet, but dropped alot. Returned to 3g on my tethering occasions.
4g uses up too much battery to leave on and expect a signal around town, when the towers were rare.
hopefully i can leave LTE on and be accustomed to/get used to using instead of 3g.

I'm in the same boat, I used Wimax maybe once a month, just because if I actually had to download a large file, that's all I could do. The battery would be dead within an hour, hour and a half tops. The battery life with the lte chip being integrated is supposed to be phenomenal compared to what we we used to.
Luckily I live in one of the first wave cities, so I expect LTE to be available in some areas already as towers are already up in some areas once the phone comes out if not by the following month once they officially go live. I honestly just like most never really used 4g on my evos however the way it was implemented was flawed by default. radio on a different chip and not enough coverage so constant losing signal and swiching left battery life to be desirable. I expect with LTE it'll be different once the ball gets rolling. The radio is on the same dye as the soc so better battery by default. Sprint will have better LTE coverage than wimax so again that will help with battery life as you won't have to keep switching between the two. If you read the manual unlike verizon sprint has a toggle to disable LTE and only use evdo. I'm sure this will help people who don't live in LTE markets as well as those of us who want to get a little extra juice out of it. Based on the reviews of the AT&T One X though, battery life even with LTE on should still be pretty good.
I live in Miami and the LTE is very spotty, I don't have it at home; only used it to download big files anyways so I'm not worried about it. In the end it's a premium fee for a monster smartphone, very worth it. I would be really happy to get LTE, though, since my wifi at home is total crap :/ and it's not going to be as much of a battery hog as it was on the OG evo.

There's the key there - for you. Many people will be ecstatic to have a phone with a bigger, more beautiful screen, more responsiveness, a way better camera, stock ICS, Sense 4.0 (maybe), better WiFi speeds (n capabilities), NFC capabilities, Google Wallet, the ability to take pictures while shooting movies, a nicer kickstand, a thinner profile (and lighter), better sound quality, a dedicated camera button, and better battery life (due to stock ICS, and efficient processor).
If none of those things are worth anything to you, I'd say you're in the minority here. I'll enjoy the heck out of this phone until LTE and HD voice arrive. Have fun with your phone.

I'm in the Austin, TX market and already Waco (part of the Austin market for Sprint purposes) has 4G LTE working...people posting 21Meg download speeds already. They are supposed to have the rest of the Austin market done by July (don't remember where I read it, but it makes sense).
Clear rolled out the WiMax 4G, but SPRINT is rolling this out, and they know they have to get it right because they are in stiff competition with Verizon and AT&T. Houston and Dallas are other Texas markets that will be in first wave, though I'm not sure if they are already up and running. I got my pre-order in today and I'm eager to get my hands on it.
And while many people do use the 4G, if you're in a building all day and not out on the roads, you probably didn't get much signal anyhow. With LTE, in-building signal is supposed to be much better, so when you're not able to get on WiFi, it will be nice. Can't wait!
Where are you finding this info? Let me know if you find stuff about the austin rollout. gonna be hard to give up full signal wimax at work for too long...

[Q] Worth it?

My dad got the Evo LTE through the pre order, but decided because of the lack of 4G and the internal battery he is going to return it. I have been playing with it for the past few days, waiting for Sprint to send a return box. After running it through usage (although I could not use 3G) it seems like it would handle how I use it...the only thing holding me back is 3G/4G. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and have amazing WiMax signal, but Sprints ****ty 3G (around .2 up, .01 down). So my question: Should I wait it out for LTE? Considering we got WiMax fairly fast, I believe that LTE should get to Chicago and the surrounding areas within a year...but I do not know if I can survive on 3G that long. How have you guys held up on only 3G? I own the 3D now, and actually use 4G a lot.
If you use 4g a lot then I suggest you then don't even bother considering this phone.

This is a question only you can answer. I rarely use data on the run. I'm usually around WiFi, so I can easily handle it. I've been on 3g only for a long time, since I was constantly flashing ROMs on the OG EVO that were without 4G. So this is the same experience for me.
I'm near Chicago, and I too believe we'll get LTE pretty quick. I am excited about it, but this phone is totally worth a lack of 4G to me. It's incredible. The screen, processor, camera, and other things are really impressive. And it's gorgeous!
In the end, it's your personal needs that must decide whether it is worth it.

I'd start with removing the proxy in the ##3282# screen. That helped me with slightly better speeds. That aside, as others above have pointed out, lte is coming to chicago very soon.
I was in louisville this weekend. Did a speed test on 3g at 7am this morning. 2.4mb down and about 900kb up (bit, not bytes). Pretty impressive and does go to show just how badly the 3g data in the chicago area sucks.

My upgrade is in 3-4 months and I'm not sure if I'm going to 1; keep my current phone and use my upgrade to make some cash, 2; use my upgrade to get the EVO LTE or, 3; use my upgrade to get the GSIII. Weird place for super fast 3g...

Just felt like sharing this because I find this very odd. Where I live I get about 1.3mbps which I thought was pretty damn fast for sprints 3g but right now I'm on a road trip with some friends and we stopped in Walcott Iowa and while still connected to the Chicago server in the speedtest app (closest server to my house) I just pulled 2+ mbps multiple times in literally the middle of nowhere haha fastest 3g I've had on sprint
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
That's because 10,000 other phones weren't using speedtest at the same time. You were in the middle of nowhere!
Rural towers where probably no one has sprint always work good. Or in many places Sprints edge of their coverage ends but on the past 8 years the city has moved outwards. And sprints network has not expanded like the other carriers. So the citizens don't use sprint in that area.

In DC its been about the same. Im hoping these speeds stick for a whlie.
I was driving through Fenton Louisiana on my way back to see my folks when I decided to do a speed test. I was shocked and saddened by the results (6/16). I rarely ever get anything better than 100kbps here in San Antonio. God I hope I'm in range when LTE kicks in!

Juvenile giggle time, on 6/18 you got 69kbps haha. But back on topic, its weird getting like a decent speed on 3g and from what I've been hearing over at s4gru.com the 4g lte its stupid fast (in a good way) compared to the 3g speeds we are getting now. And then the network vision thing their doing should help with the 3g to eventually

I've noticed a speed increase out here in the bay area as well were I live I would usually averagearound 150 to 300 kbps but over the past week or so my speeds have averaged from 500 to 800 kbps hopefully its a sign of good things to come
I average around 1.5 mb/s in my smaller city of around 60k peiple
Yeah I got over 1 meg for the first time in a few months... They are probably firing back up some of the towers now

Happens to me all the time in Orange County, CA. Some times the pings are under 100ms too, Normally when I'm on the freeways is when speeds are best.
I just get those speeds @3am lol

It's probably because everyone who's been without power has no battery life left in their phones.
Hopefully they take care of them soon.

kingsville,tx has amazing 3g
I live in the boonies of North Georgia and get at least 1 meg, usually more. Funny thing is if you put my zip code on Sprints website it will say they don't recommend sprint for this area due to lack of coverage. There's no Sprint store for miles!

I thought so too. There are few people without power around me now. Lets hope that Sprint just decided to play nice.
Consider yourselves very lucky. I had MUCH better speeds on my OGEvo. I live in Lexington, SC, right outside of Columbia, and we never had 4G, and probably never really will.
I have been getting decent speeds right outside of Philly

Walcott, IA has one of the largest truckstops in the entire country. Imagine how much data is getting pulled down when 1,000 bored drivers are online.

[Q] Is anyone getting solid LTE connection?

Is anyone in the cities/communities that LTE went live in, connecting to the network and maintaining the connection? I am in San Antonio, and have only had LTE connect once and that was before the network went live. I checked the coverage map and it says it should connect but I am having no luck. I have read in other threads that people connect for a few seconds then go back to 3G service. I just wanted to see what everone else's mileage is. Thanks
I'm in san Antonio as well. I barely got any lte since launch. And I'm right by a tower.

the sprint maps arent accurate as of right now. the towers havent all been upgraded. that map is more a representation of coverage once there done. i was holding a stable 4g connection down in the quarry saturday afternoon.
I saw the 4g icon once about a month ago. And it was so sporadic I couldn't do anything with it.
Now that it's officially live in KC. Still haven't seen anything. Stuck on 3g and I'm about a mile and a half from the Sprint campus.
I was out of town last week and was hoping to come back to LTE. Sprint said the 15th, so I guess shouldn't expect much until the end of the month.
I am in DFW and where I live I get nothing.. not even a blip of 4G turning on. Where I work it turns on but it usually flips right back to 3G. I was able to hold it for about 15 mins at one point this morning but thats been it.
Unfortunately for me 3G coverage on my towers is god awful to the point im tempted to activate my OGEvo and use wimax till this is sorted.
I live 3 blocks from the sprint compound in KC and haven't seen a hair of LTE. Odd.
San Antonio, no service yet. Coverage map might be a prediction of complete service and not an actual "current serviceā€œ map

Went outside during lunch and did pick up 4g.
Ran a speedtest, 1.5 down, about the same up. Not real impressive. Although still better then the non-existent 3g as of late.
As soon as I walk back in the building it goes back to 3g.
I am in San Antonio as well, and no, it goes crazy 4G-3G-4G-3G etc etc but it does not maintain 4G... it switches back to 3G and stays there... if I force it to stay on 4G (##DATA#) it get good solid 4G speeds at one point 10down 8up... but it wont make or receive phone calls, if I reboot I get a "the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly"
I seriously hope things improve in terms of the network. It would be a shame if all this NV stuff Sprint talked about was just hype.... I know LTE just went live but it should atleast be able to grab a decent connection. Let's just hope it can penetrate better and be more reliable than WiMAX....

I was able to get LTE in the 1604/I10 area Friday night but now its nowhere to be found. I spoke with a customer rep and they did say that it will be a work in progress as they are making some sort of adjustments to the towers and that when that happens they may be taken down to make the switch and the overload of traffic on other towers is causing it to not connect properly to the LTE servers. I would have thought that this transition would have been made before going live but apparently not. Hopefully over the next few days the network gain strength.
Odessa texas here, Nothin man, nada. What pisses me off is that we're paying for 4g service and we cannt even get it. like paying for a meal you cant eat, a car you cant drive, a hooker you cant,,,,ok thats too much, Anyways you know what im saying ,,,right?
Another person in SA with no 4G here. I carpooled this morning and saw nothing the whole way to work. (Bandera & 1604 across 151 and then to Culebra & 410 if we're mapping this). Went out for lunch and didn't get any signal either. Oh well, I guess we'll see how things look in a week or so.
I talked to a Sprint rep and they said they are still working to get the coverage shown on the map for LTE. I gave them a couple zip codes and they came back and said they should go live soon
Try getting a hold of a Sprint rep on chat/phone and give them your zip if you are supposed to be getting LTE according to the map.
Personally I am getting blazing speeds in the south but 0 LTE in the north. I am being patient
I'm not in San Antonio at the moment. Live in Los Angeles and well...I'll let my screenshot speak for it's self.

The 10$ is for any smartphone regardless of 4g or not. They changed that charge a long time ago. Its premium data now. Every company does this..no big deal.

Originally it was a WiMAX charge but then they figured out that they couldn't legally charge for their WiMAX unless it was actually up and running in their entire proposed network. They then said it was for all smartphones to get around it. Yes its not a big deal because sprint is still cheaper than the other carriers but they still don't have a completely functioning WiMAX/lte network. We all know its a 4g charge no matter what they call it

Dacula, GA here. Got a 4g signal about a month ago, but only for a short while. Now the coverage map says that I am covered, but I haven't gotten any signal. So like everyone is saying, the map is pretty inaccurate right now. Hopefully i'll get some connection by the end of this month.
This is the best I could do today in the Vinings GA (burbs of of ATL) area. 4G has been flashing since Mon for me. It lasts for less than 5 mins, but long enough for me to do a few speed tests. 4G also flashes at my home, but its very brief. What's crazy is today I was told about the Open Signal app, so I downloaded it. It's really helpful... What I didn't know was the tower I see near my job is a Sprint Tower. I also have another tower about a mile away. I saw today I caught 4G from both. Makes me wonder what's really up? The tower is right outside my office, so is the LTE signal that weak, or are there some kind of signal/antenna issues? Oh by the way, the Sprint Tower is also really close to where I live. It's about 0.2-0.3 miles away...
