I thought I saw a .cab file here somewhere that would allow you to bridge the 3G/EDGE connection to the WiFi connection so I can share my 3G over WiFi to laptop or whatever.
Anyone seen this? I cant remember the name, thought it was something like WMBridge or something.
Thanks

internet connection sharing will allow you to share your 3G over bluetooth or USB to your laptop !!
and now that I think about it you can almost certainly go through the arduous and difficult task of getting activesync to connect over an adhoc wifi connection, once that is done you will be able to use the phone as a 3G modem for your laptop.

u can do it tht way but its hard, and requires a registry hack, which to be fair doesnt work all that well, disconns after a couple of mins at best, bluetooth is the way to go if u want wireless connecton, although i use the lead for security, u can use the 3g conn as a modem, but then if u like us use tmob wb and walk then u cnt use ur data package.
hope this helps
Peter
The app is called wmWifiRouter. Looks like they just came out with a new version the 10th. Forget bluetooth, its not secured at all, and only lets you share with one device. With wmwifirouter you can share with many. See the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341398
excellent that is exactly what I was looking for, I will play with it today and see if I can get it to work.
Thanks
G
Should be a simple matter of copying the exe to your device and running it. It takes care of all the registry settings, starting up Internet Sharing, keeping the connection alive, and with the latest version you can even put the unit to sleep and your connection will stay alive. About the only thing it doesn't do is set up a peer-to-peer profile with a fixed IP address, but the thread above walks you through that. Make sure you set the profile to use WPA encryption (NOT WEP or 'open') and set a password.

I finally got around to trying this and have had no luck. I followed the directions as best as I could tell. Anyone verify if this works on the Athena? I used to have the method set up manually but hadn't set it up again since updating to AP3.0. This would be much handier... if works!

The directions are confusing because the newer method was grafted onto the same thread as the older method. So it's hard to tell what's what. I put about an hour into this but made no progress. The exe file doesn't appear to do anything on the Athena...

Sorry, just saw your response as I wrote mine. Here is what I did:
1. set up an ad hoc network on my Athena. IP address 192.168.0.1 (another place saide 192.168.0.7--tried both)
2. Set up on my client (MacBook Pro). A connection was established.
3. Ran the exe file -- nothing happened. One comment said to deactivate the network before running. I did this in various degrees with no success.
4. Also opened up the Internet Sharing applet and tried to connect manually -- "USB cable is not connected."
Clearly I'm missing something here. It would be very handy to have this capability. Can you clarify??
Not sure why you are having a problem - I unzipped the zip, transfered the exe to the athena and it ran on the first try after first setting up the ad-hoc wifi connection (settings, connections, wi-fi, network adapters tab, IEEE..., use specific IP address in the 192.168.x.x range; then go to the other tab and set up an ad-hoc connection).
I had an even worse experience. Everytime I ran the exe, my Athena locked up, needing a complete reset each time.
I gave up in the end .
I have got other methods to work using Mortscipts, but it does seem like something that would be well worth someones time sorting out for the good of us all.
Have you tried the latest version of wmWifiRouter? The developer released a new version of it earlier this month. Its on version 0.8 now.
Been searching for it for a while and found many that where working but none that worked for more than 15 seconds then crashed, got this one now, and it works great. Been testing it for the last hour, and even using right now as i type this. It is attached to the attachment, download and install the APK. Enjoy guys

added to the root thread post, thanks for the info bro.
This has worked consistently for me since install.
It also seems to not need any sort of special install procedure, you can just drop the apk and install from astro or whatever file manager you use.
works perfectly posting this reply using the connection dowload 1.76mb/s upload 1.23mb/s
Wifi tether
You actually don't need a file manager to install just download it from your slide and it will ask if you want to install after it is done loading to your memory card.(Of course you need ROOT and su permission) Thanks!
her does anyone know if wifi tether can tether to android phones? I heard that the EVO can do it I really need this on my slide.

Huh? The wifi tether app creates an access point that any wifi-capable device can connect to. And as [most, if not all] Android handsets have wifi capabilities they should be able to join that access point to snag the wireless connection.

Yeah I've tried tethering on my own MT3GS and connecting to it via my sister's MT3GS and the network doesn't show up.
thanks for checking. I hope they find away to do it on ours soon.
Ok, when I try to install while on my phone it says there is a problem parsing the package... ?
NM, it was the wrong APK that had the same name, just ._ at the beginning that I was trying.
By the way, thanks for the app (OP and peeps who made it).
On my MT3GS it is working great! Also running the Teamslide Nonsense ROM, just put the apk on the sdcard and installed.
I'm on OSX and it doesn't actually show up as a network, it shows up as a p2p connection. Not sure if that would make a difference for people that might be having trouble, but basically if you get the app installed and the tether started, it might just be computer settings.
Causes reboot on my Slide running CM Nightlies... (8/12/2010) Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Need to check the log but it is consistent, does the same thing with AdFree.

Same thing using CM-RC1 (8/15/2010). Dang, was hopeful this would be a quick fix.
You can always find the most recent version of Android Wifi Tether at: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether. The most current version is 2.0.5-pre8 as of this post. Use that, not the one in this thread's original post!

Not sure if its compatibility with Froyo since (technically speaking) Froyo is suppose to have built-in Hotspot support.

Has anyone else noticed the wifi tether breaking on eugenes rc6 and teamslide1.71 after flashing the dopio kernel? Cyanogen rc1 seems to reboot on all. It seems like all ROMs that have modified kernel's have caused wifi tether to not work. I am running CR's Full OTA with wifi tether working. After flashing any dopio kernel the thether no longer works (I have tried 2_0_5 pre3, 7 and 8).
I just updated my girlfriend's 3G Slide to the latest CM build (6.0.0) and Wifi Tether is causing reboots for her as well. My Google-fu is wearing thin.
I tried the built in USB tethering as well and regardless of the driver I use once USB tethering is turned on it can't find the driver.
Not sure if it's connected.
Same driver issue is happening with PDANet, on 2 laptops. One running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, the other running Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
This big issue is with WifiTether rebooting the phone. Hopefully someone can come up with a fix for it.
(I've also tried every version of WifiTether as well, happens with each version no matter what.)
Hi guys,
probably it is an already known problem, but I cannot connect to any ad hoc network, due to the fact my Flyer neither recognize them...
Is there a way to overcome this problem? (i.e. some apps in Market?)
Thanks for your answers, anyway!
did you try the zt-180 ad-hoc switcher???
you can download for free for android market, and work for the samsung galaxy tab , the flytouch , the zt-180 of course, and a lot of other tablets.
so i will give it a try
pd: my htc flyer is shipped yet... i have to wait to provr the app.

That app will not work because we do not have root access yet on the flyer. I had a thread going about tethering the flyer to my droid 1 and I think the only way you can do it is using the usb tether on a rooted phone. But I have yet to test this out yet.
tether
Anyone find a way to tether the Flyer to a rooted Droid 1?
I have yet to try it yet, But using CM7 usb tether should work.

In my s-off and rooted flyer, when i try to open z-180 i see:"Error-At least one of the shell commands needed for this application to work is not available. The first not found command was:awk.A possible solution might be update BusyBox.The Application cannot continue"and then "close application"
And so?
seems like there are several threads on this sections discussing the same thing. Can the Admin combine the Threads together? thanks. I would like this solve this issue as I am unable to connect to my Adhoc wifi network.
i updated BusyBox,and now something is changed!..when i open zt-180 i see:"warning...this app is intended to be used with devices having rt2870............or even might work with devices using other wi-fi modules on -just to try-mode...."and if i click up continue button i see anhoter warning:"One of the files which should be modified by this application in order to switch to ad-hoc mode is not present at its expected location...however the application could try to switch to ad-hoc on-just to try..-mode,bypassing that file modification. This may work on few devices and may not work on others, there is absolutely no warranty"..so then the app opens,i click up "Try to switch to ad-hoc mode, just to try..."the wifi change from infracstructure ad hoc mode, but if i scan networks..joikuspot is not seen from the flyer yet!
has someone tryed with the wpa_supplicant modified as i seen in anhoter thread of this forum?
I tried several times and nothing happen. If I had more time I could do some research and experiment on my flyer but I have been swamped. First time I did this I got stuck in a start up loop. After a factory reset I tried again with no luck. But at least there was a loop error.
Ad hoc networks...
Solved! Now,my flyer is connected by wifi to my n95 with joikuspot!i used the wpa_supplicant v.0.6 found in this forum!i renamed the original file into /system/bin and insert the wpa_supplicant modified in the same subdirectory with root explorer!
todo ok!
todo ok with skype, nimbuzz, gsm calls using my bt headset sonyericsson mw600 while surf in internet with the android browser!
Awesome! Now I have a rooted Wifi Flyer with support for Ad-Hoc networks. Just replace the wpa_supplicant file under system/bin with the one you can download on this forum.
The file is located here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
No need to flash the zip. Just open it, copy the wpa_supplicant file to your Flyer and reboot.
Now I can use wireless tether with my rooted D1.
I really hope that the Bionic or GS2 will be rootable. I don't think I will get rid of my D1 unless they are.
I cannot seem to get my D1 to tether to the Flyer with the replaced wpa_supplicant file.
I have tried barnacle as well as wifi tether (beta) on the D1 and various wpa_supplicant files on the flyer.
What am I doing wrong here?
EDIT: With every wpa_supplicant file I have tried, my Flyer's wifi goes into an off&on cycle, so I can't even get wifi to even detect any networks.
Probably you have incorrect permissions on the wpa_supplicant file.
Make sure they are just like the original that you replaced. You did rename it to back it up didn't you?
You can fix the permission with root-explorer
permissions (rwxr-xr-x)

I finally got it to work. I didn't realize that I had to extract the file from the zip.
I tried flashing and that did not work. So I emailed the extracted wpa_supplement from the zip. Pasted it into system/bin. Turned on my wifi, and now I'm connected via barnacle!
Woot!
Step by Step, please? For a Newcomer...
Okay, so I'm new, I mean REAL new to Android & HTC, like, just bought my Flyer yesterday. So this is my first "Android" experience and I must admit, I love the Flyer- practical, intuative, user friendly. There's a problem though, I bought it for one sole reason... to use Square to process CC payments. On the weekends, I sell classic gaming consoles at the local flea market and with the holiday season upon us, processing CC payments is a must. So I have a Nokia E71 with JoikuSpot on it, which turns it into a WiFi hotspot. Great! But that hotspot is an "adhoc" hotspot, so apparently my Flyer cannot detect it. I have read everything posted here and would love to apply the adhoc fix, I just have to ask can anyone, ANYONE, put it in laymans terms. Start to finish. I don't want to return this to BestBuy for an iPad2 (which has NO problem with adhoc), but it seems that will have to be the case if I can't get my Flyer to recognize adhoc signals. So, what do I need to do? Step by step? I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to fix this as well, but are afraid to ask. I have the patience and I'm tech saavy enough I suppose. It's just that at this point I'm thinking, "A Wifi 'only' HTC Flyer... that DOESN'T recognize adhoc???" What were they thinking? Again, this is my first experience EVER with an Android device, I love everything so far but, for the sake of being able to do business efficiently, I'll go Apple in a flash if I can't solve this. Please folks, step BY step, can you help a guy out???

Challenge accepted!
Time <1 hour - Difficulty: moderate - Fun factor: high - Cost: 4 bucks
1. Follow the directions here to root the Flyer to get S-Off:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
This lets you have admin rights to your flyer. It lets you modify any file on the device as well as install and delete any components in the root of the device. The guide is pretty easy to follow, so im not going to put the steps here.
2. Download Root Explorer from the marketplace:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer
This lets you modify any file on your phone. You can use this site to push apps to your phone. It's pretty much awesome.
3. Download the wpa file: wpa_adhoc-signed.zip from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
4. On your computer extract the wpa_supplicant file from the said zip file
5. Plug your flyer in, and transfer the file to the SD card on the Flyer
6. On your Flyer, turn off wifi. Then, using root explorer, navigate to the folder with the file. Long press on the file and select copy.
7. Navigate to system/bin/. Menu -> Bookmarks -> Root Folder, scroll down and click on system then bin. First hit the Mount R/W button on the top of the screen. Then, long press on the existing wpa_supplement file and choose rename. Call it wpa_supplement.backup or something similar.
8. Hit the paste button on the bottom of the screen. You should have wpa_supplement (new file) and the wpa_supplement.backup chilling out next to each other.
9. Long press on the new wpa_supplement file and give the following permissions: (rwxr-xr-x) Mess around with the check boxes until you get this to show.
10. exit root explorer, turn on wifi, and you shall see the adhoc networks listed as (*)adhoc_network's_name
I hope that made sense. Reply back if you have any questions....

These instructions should work. Just be sure that for #1, you scroll down to the SAMSUNG GALAXY NEXUS (4G_LTE). For some reason, I chose the Google NexusOne (I saw the word nexus and thought it was the right one) at the top of the list and didnt realize that was the wrong one. Once I fixed that, everything worked like a charm! Hope this helps.

Is it a windows PC that you are trying to attach to it? Does the tether start up with any errors in the log?
You should be able to see it just like any other router in your list of available networks.
Edit: Just noticed you said it started with no errors. Hmm.
It should just show up in your available networks.
Try manually creating a connection to your ssid (forgot the exact steps to do this, but its somewhere in network settings).
Also, try changing the setup method to the other available methods (ad-hoc, netd)

I am running ICS 3.5 from Scotts, I can not get Tethering to work. I have tried everything listed. I have tried several ICS Roms and it hasnt worked on any of them. The only time it worked for me was right after I unlocked and rooted on the oem rom with barnacle. Since then it has not worked at all. Wifi isnt working either in ICS 3.5 for me. It is stuck on "turning on". Easytether (USB) is working like a charm though. However I would really like wireless tether. I am coming over to the rezound because i lost my thunderbolt. I want to make sure this phone will do all that my rooted Tbolt would before my 14 days are up... that phone was .. OMG AWSOME. If I cant get it to match up to my old Tbolt in useability, I will go back to another Tbolt.
I am thinking that tomorrow I may try learning how to deal with mainver issues and stepping down to RUU_Vigor_VERIZON_WWE_1.02.605.6_Radio_RS_0.95.00.1013r_3161E_9K_NV_8k_1.12_9k_1.83_V_APT_release_221502_signed
Seeing if I can get it working on that, make a backup, then go clean back to an ICS build.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

srivkin's instructions should work. Be sure to follow them to the T. Also, have you tried different versions of the tether app?
I thought that encryption didn't work with the tether app.
I relocked and reverted back to that RUU I mentioned in the above post this morning, after running the mainver fix. I unlocked, reflashed ra recovery, rooted, uninstalled some VZW bloat and the vzw tether blocker. installed wifi tether and it still wouldnt work, installed barnacle and it works...but it is so slow it is useless really. Easytether still works great. I already miss ICS. I will re-port a clean ICS onto it later this afternoon after ive had time to build out this base one and back up an image of it. I will repost with any progress.
BTW, I tried all of the settings you guys have mentioned and it just isnt hitting it for me, not sure whats up with that, but I will know more maybe after I put ICS back on clean and try it out.
** Addition - Installed OpenGarden it is running well on the:

i think i may have found the problem, but not sure. i tried setting up my WIFI on my phone, but when i go to turn it on, i get an "error" that appears right under the wifi check box. anyone know how i can fix this?
Edit: would i be able to do a factory reset to see if it fixes the WIFI issue, i am on stock rooted with amonra, or would i have to do a wipe thru amonra?
ok i finally made the jump to scotts ics rom and everything is working fine... thank you guys for all your information
I noticed that my AT&T HOX+ automatically connects to the "attwifi" hotspot at Starbucks for example, without prompting me. This is very annoying and a security risk. Annoying because it doesn't automatically log me in, I still have to go accept the agreement in the browser, so the data connection is broken. Also annoying because I'm on LTE and the wifi speeds on attwifi are horrible. A security issue because I'm not sure there's any validation done that it's indeed the AT&T network or it just sees the attwifi SSID that anyone could impersonate hence getting connected to random malicious networks.
Anyone seeing the same behavior? Please post what ROM you are running.
Any way to stop it (without disabling wifi)?
Any way to at least automatically log in? My old iPhone never prompted me to authenticate to the attwifi network, somehow it detected it was an AT&T device.
Re: [Q] [AT&T] Does your AT&T HOX+ automatically connect to "attwifi"?
I have to ask, why is it so difficult to disable WiFi?
That's your only real option, use the Sony app to disable WiFi while you're at your Starbucks location

It's not hard to do it, it's just that I have to remember to do it. Even the option "Block network notifications" for the attwifi network doesn't seem to do it.
There's gotta be the right AT&T apk that perhaps could be replaced by the Telus apk, assuming that doesn't do anything similar. Or the hard-coded attwifi string somewhere that could be replaced with a dummy value.... Hopefully a dev will see this thread and know where to look.
As for auto login, I found this thread.
Which Sony app is that? Something like the Motorola Smart Actions? I've used Llama in the past for other purposes and I remember you could set an event, I guess something like "on connect to attwifi - turn wifi off"

Nevermind the Sony app doesn't have location as a trigger

That's more of a band-aid solution. I'd like to see this obnoxious "feature" removed by a custom ROM.
Re: [Q] [AT&T] Does your AT&T HOX+ automatically connect to "attwifi"?
Because the hotspot is embedded inside the kernel. Can't change unless you install a custom kernel.

Interesting. Blackout has a custom kernel, maybe they can undo AT&T's feature.

Oh man thanks for the find! I gotta try this asap. Believe me, I did Google and found only reports of the problem but no solution. I guess I have to take a course in advanced Google search

Well yeah, that's what happens when you over-think searches Thanks again Sir!
I tried the mod and unfortunately if I make any changes to /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf wifi no longer starts, it shows "Error". I think there's something else going on that's checking for the presence of that entry. I tried changing the SSID, no luck either.
Anyone able to get it work?
In other news, I discovered that /system/app/ATT_Hotspot.apk is what does the auto login to the attwifi network and a little orange notification icon shows up, something like "welcome to the AT&T network".

Did you restart?
If that's the app that's doing it then freeze it

Yes, I did restart. That's not the app that's doing the connection, it's the app that automatically logs you in, after you are already connected to attwifi so you don't have to manually accept the agreement.
Ah, ES File Explorer screwed me! First time I use it to edit a file and what it did it saved the original file as a .bak and created a new file with my changes. The problem is that the new file is owned by root and rw by root only, but the original conf file is owned by system:wifi and 660 perms. Once I fixed ownership and perms, wifi starts even without the attwifi entry.
So yes, we can remove the attwifi entry, but there's still a problem: once you manually connect to attwifi once, the entry is put back in and cannot be removed via the UI, you have to edit the file all over again. It seems that we need a proper fix from a ROM developer to allow the UI to forget the attwifi entry, it must be hard-coded that the attwifi entry is not editable.
This is probably a stupid question (because it's so simple, but I didn't see anyone mention they tried it), but did you try disabling the AT&T Hot Spots app?

Yes of course. That has nothing to do with establishing the connection. It only authenticates you to the AT&T network once you are already connected to attwifi. Disabling it makes it worse because you end up with a broken data connection: you are connected to attwifi but you have not clicked "accept" yet in the browser. That app implements WISPr.
