Tip: Launch Widget Clock or Car Dock directly - Motorola Photon 4G

I don't own any of the overpriced Motorola docks, and use an alternative launcher, so I can't access the Car Dock or the Widget Clock by normal means.
However, I've discovered it's possible to create shortcuts to their activities that seem to work.
Before you ask, the main one I was hoping for was the Webtop, so that I could use it for root, but if it's possible, I haven't found the right activity yet. I have not seen the Webtop in action, but in order for this to work for that, you'd have to be able to see Firefox on the Photon, which I don't think is possible even with the real Webtop, so there goes that.
But anyway, to access Car Dock or the Widget Clock:
1. Long press the home screen
2. Select Shortcuts
3. Select Activities
For Car Dock, scroll down to Car Dock and select:
com.motorola.cardock2.main.CardockMainActivity
For Widget Clock, scroll down to Desk Home and select:
com.motorola.dlauncher.DLauncher
There you go, shortcuts for directly launching them. I have no idea why Motorola couldn't have been well-behaved and included these as regular apps.

Thanks, I found this to be helpful. Especially the cardock. You just saved me $50

Thanks I was just looking for this option.
However, I do the long press on the home page and then choose Shortcuts but when I get to the Shortcuts page I do not have an option for "Activities". The only "A" options I have are Applications and App groups.

I can't find activities when I choose shortcuts? Is it under something else?

Followed direction for the car dock but it closes right way when I try to open the shortcut.

What launchers are you guys using? Worked for me with both Motoblur and Go.

I'm using Blur and don't have the activities option

I am using Launcher Pro. Will give Go a try.
Tried on Go but same think with car dock. Closes as soon as it tries to open

Hmm, seems that the Activities shortcut may be created by LauncherPro. I was using Launcher Pro earlier, and haven't uninstalled it yet, so that sounds plausible.

According to this article, you can add the shortcut to the activity and uninstall LauncherPro after if you want.

I remember having that option with LP on my Evo, but someone earlier said they had Activities with Blur. Could it be something installed by a launcher but still seen by Blur?

Yes, well it was me that had that under Blur. And yes, it seems like Launcher Pro adds Activities under Shortcuts, but all launchers have access to it.

I had to select "custom shortcuts" then pick activity.

I downloaded Launcher Pro and now I can see the Activities option and I can add the Car Dock icon to my home page, but it also closes for me right away when I launch it.
Maybe it has something to do with the app looking for the magnets in the car dock?

Hmm pretty strange, since I can open it up and it works fine, I'll have to think more on what the difference could be.
Is there anyone else it works for?
How about the Widget Clock? That also opens up for me, but when I quit seems to cause some sort of screen corruption on Go Launcher.

I was getting the closing right away but last night I did the MR3 update and then tried this again. Now it opens with no problem.

Pretty strange, since I'm not on the MR3 update. Not even rooted.

The widget and car dock links work with the kickstand out for me, but FC with it in.

I've played around with this some more, and whether or not it force closes has something to do with the kickstand. It's really fussy.
It will always work on boot, until the kick stand is closed for the first time.
If Kickstand enable is disabled in settings, after the first time the kickstand is closed, it will stop working with or without the kickstand open.
If Kickstand enable is enabled in settings, it will continue to function with the kickstand open, but will no longer work with kickstand closed.
Anyone else confirm?

I can confirm it works without the kickstand open after a fresh boot. I did not play with the kickstand settings.

I found a app on android market called Car Mode Control. It puts a simple car mode launcher icon in apps drawer. It launches the car mode control fine on my photon mr5.

SketchBook Free

This has to be one of the best apps I have ever seen on android. Great drawing app and is free. The full version is only .99 too if anyone is a professional. This could turn your nook color into a viable sketch book.
Are you talking about SketchBook?

Whichever one is from Autodesk. You might be right about the name. I will edit.
anyone have an apk? The only access I have to the android market is through a cupcake emulator.
Here you go
by any chance has anyone installed this on the nook? any luck saving a drawing or similar? seems you probably need the menu button but the soft keys and the status bar is gone
SketchBook in fact, IS amazing! I splurged and bought the $0.99 version. Once I learned how to use layering and import pics, the whole process became very easy. Controls are very intuitive. Maybe we could post pictures we've done in this thread? I'd like to see how others have used it.
Looks interesting
How do you get it to go full screen? the notification bar covers up the bottom buttons.

To get the menu button to show up using SoftKeys, make sure SoftKeys is set as your default launcher. Single tap of the N button should take you to your favorite launcher (Zeam, ADW, LauncherPro, etc.) and a double-tap should open Softkeys where you can tap Menu > New or Gallery > Save or Don't Save.

Mine was full screen by default. Maybe try reinstalling? What are you using as your Launcher?
I just purchased Sketchbook Mobile app & it installed, but I don't see it in the app drawer. If I go to the market, it said "installed". If I click on it I get an option to open & I can & it works, but even after a reboot it doesn't appear in my app drawer.
Any ideas? BTW It doesn't show up in my uninstaller app either. Can I re download it somehow?
Update: Uninstalled & reinstalled & finally found it. Maybe I just missed it. Wasn't looking for "SBM" descriptor! They should have mentioned that it would be named that!!!

I use Zeam. I'm new to android though. Does the launcher influence whether or not the notification bar is visible in apps?
also, my dpi is set to 200. I've found that I can hit the button at the bottom by tapping just a hair above the notification bar.
It can. Under menu>preferences>general you'll find the fullscreen option. You also have the option to toggle it under the gestures menu in Zeam.

I did some drawing on my Nexus S some time ago, I attached the result. I'm still waiting for my NC to be delivered, can't wait to use SBM with a bigger screen!
patience paid off!
I remember first using that SB on my laptop and then it was the only reason that I was going to buy an iPad. I waited hoping that it would come to Android and my patience paid off. It's surprisingly stable on the NC but it's crazy fast on my Evo.
I love this app

Active kick stand

I've seen on reviews that when it's enabled, it's supposed to give you the option between switching to landscape mode or launching Widget Clock.
Mine just seems to flip to landscape mode when enabled (or do nothing when disabled).
I can't quite remember if maybe I saw the choice prompt once and told it to always put me in landscape, but that seems quite plausible.
I'm curious to try out Widget Clock now, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it come out anymore. It doesn't show up in the app list, and when I go to manage apps and scroll to Launcher Pro, the launcher I'm currently using, it doesn't show up as set as any defaults (which is odd, shouldn't it at least be my home screen default?), so there's nothing for me to clear out.
When your kickstand is in use and you are in landscape mode pull down the notifications menu. From there you will be able to access the widget clock and change your default preferences.
Turns out Widget Clock only works if you're running the default Motoblur launcher. I was running Launcher Pro, and the notification never pops up.
That's a shame.

Yup, that's how I discovered the root of the problem. Pretty awkward way to use this feature in the long run, though. I'm just going to be turning off the feature.

I'm using GLEX and my Widget Clock works fine on kickstand and in my HD dock. If it doesn't automatically pop up, hit your home button and it should switch to the clock.

disable full screen mode on ADW Launcher

I am on CM7 RC1.3 (previously was on RC1) and I have had the same problem with them on both. My main dock randomly will disappear and the only way I can get it back is to restart my phone. I think it is when i open an app that request full screen access then the main dock bar never comes back. But I can't fine anywhere to disable full screen.
It's an extra place for you to put shortcuts. Disable "Hidden Dockbar" in ADW Settings if you don't want it. Either that, or play around with it until you get used to it. Dragging up from the bottom opens it and dragging down (from the top of where the dock WOULD be) closes it. It takes some people a little bit to get used to it but it is a useful feature.

well i want the main dockbar to always be there. i dont want it disappearing when i go back to the home pages. there is a "close dockbar" option which says "auto-close dockbar after app-launch" when checked. i dont want to see the dockbar when an app is open, but i do want it to be there when i close the app. but i have that disabled anyways, so that shouldnt be an issue. i did a search and saw i am not the only person that has had this problem. but options they took to fix it, i dont have for various reasons. (i.e. CM6, tablet)
the swipe up and swipe down gestures are set to none also.

Yes. I understand. What I am describing is not "auto-close dockbar". It is the Hidden Dockbar as described.
Eh, I don't use it but I just installed it so I could be more descriptive of where the setting is.
Menu->Settings->ADW Settings->UI Settings
Under the "Hidden Dockbar" section uncheck "Dockbar".

Those are completely different than what I am referring to. If the "Hidden Dock" is enabled then swiping up from the bottom of the main dockbar will open it and swiping down from the top of the extended dockbar (imagine where the top of the main dock bar would be if it was there) will close it. I'm not sure how to explain this any better.
I'm sure you can set a hide/unhide the Hidden Dock as a icon shortcut, softkey shortcut, and/or swipe gesture as well if you want to keep it and that is more convenient.
Ok, I had checkmark on Dockbar. I took it off. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks.

Go Launcher w/ MoPho Conflict

Ever since I loaded Go Launcher EX, my desk clock no longer launches when the kickstand is opened. Is there any way to restore this functionality and still use Go Launcher? The desk clock worked perfectly with SPB Shell. Is there some place where I can set which app automatically opens when the kickstand is opened?
Btw, the kickstand is enabled in Display Settings.

I had a similar issue and found a "fix" for it.
Load the Moto launcher
Open the kickstand
Change the default for the kickstand to Widget Clock
Now, when you open the kickstand and hit your home button, it should launch the desk clock.

That's odd, I don't even see the moto launcher. That should have come on the phone right?
If you loaded a third-party launcher (Launcher Pro, ADW, GoLauncher, etc) then you may not be able to easily switch back to the Motorola stock launcher. You can use a program like HomeSmack to re-enable it.
Try long pressing on the home button. If you see a "Home" app that is the Motor launcher.
The app "Home Switcher" will allow you to launch MotoBlur. What I've done was to install Launcher Pro, then I added an Activities shortcut that launched the Moto desktop. I then uninstalled Launcher Pro. You can only get the Activities shortcut option with LP. Now I will open the kickstand and then open my shortcut.

[IDEA][APP] auto hide widget widget

I'm not sure if it is possible but I have an idea of a widget:
It's a widget that contains another widget that will auto after a specific condition (perhaps with llama/tasker?)
Examples:
hide music widget of choice if there's no music playing or headset plugged in.
Hide (school) timetable if you're not at that location.
Show GPS/traffic widget if not at home/school/work.
You might think of another great use yourself.
This is just an idea, and since I'm no app developer myself, (at least not yet) I hope one of the great android developers that are on these fora will take an interest in this project.
Sent from my SHV-E160L 32GB with XDA HD
But why hide the widget? That space where the widget that hid the other widget is still unusable because the widget can become transparent, but it can not remove itself from the home screen and then put itself back, since adding widgets is a system level command. And if it could do what I just said it can't, what if you put apps/shortcuts/widgets in its place, where would they go? I might be over thinking this whole idea a little but that's just my two cents. I do have a similar idea now that I read this, though. Use Tasker to restore backed up Nova/Holo/Adw/Apex/Etc, settings and home screen layouts based on what you said in your first post. That is probably going to take way longer to do, but it get the same effect and could probably save battery that way too. I mean, if I make a Tasker profile set up so that whenever I connect to my schools wifi, that it restores a previous backed home screen and settings layout. My phone always dies at school, so my home screen would become blank, with no dock or status bar, and just have gestures set up so that I can still get to my apps (swipe up for drawer, down for notifications, two fingers up for phone app, and two fingers down for messaging). With nothing on my home screen, I save battery because the Launcher does not have to load any thing. Android itself might be a limitation for what we're saying here, but maybe Key Lime Pie could bring us closer to that.

Thank you for the reply, PenguinxEnjoi
I can see now that my idea can be a bit confusing.
I just had the idea to hide the widget when I don't need it so it doesn't clog up my lock/home screen.
If it means turning it invisible I'd like that just as much as removing it. I just don't want to see it.

If this is possible it would totally be an option. Especially since I'm using widgetlocker and nova launcher.
This will probably be done using intents (if it's supported) but I've only begun using tasker (after llama) so I'm still not sure how they work.
Have you found the way to auto hide widgets for example with Tasker?
extension!?
I have been trying to find a way to recreate a menu pop down resembling the app drawer menu on my desktop and yes...there are many hurdles to be made through an auto hide feature. Why there cant be an app writin that works along with zooper pro or uccw (or done internaly themselves) that can acknowlege a widget name and link it to a static bitmap/icon within another widget as in a"press on" action is beyond me. I know that is probably the last thing those two companies wanna do but it would really make it fun for the average joe just trying to create something fresh and different for their own pride and joy. I havent had much luck getting any reaponse on this. Lol obviously due to a lack reason. And no im not talking about the chocolate covered carmel candy. Bit if any of you developers out there want to take a stab at it. Looks like there is a code writtin in a somewhat similar context that i believe could work. In the end. Its us vs. Them. Hope to see something more happen with this.
And of course..i am mot allowed to copy and paste outside links yet. Thanks XDA. but if you type in."auto hide widget" in google it should be the second link you see. Hope someone makes this a reality. Will be watching for developments.:silly:
Pop up widgets from the developer of the sslauncher. Does the trick nicely. Also you can use swipepad with the widgetpad addon. Works nice for me. Widget here, widget gone
