Hi, first of all I love my SGS2, this is my 3rd android phone and I couldn't be happier. This phone is great. BUT... There's one thing that's bugging me. Every rom and kernel I've tried have the same problem. Lag. I'm NOT talking in games or the loading of applications, because this phone FLIES through those tasks. It's small areas where there shouldn't be the smallest amount of lag i.e. scrolling and the homescreen. I hope someone could shed some light on this for me. Everyone talks about how great this phone is and how there's absolutely no lag. Well have you used an iphone. Their like butter. We've got a phone that ****s power and they've got weak hardware in comparison. What gives?
Thanks for reading...
ive noticed if i have the phone plugged into a different charger, ( non oem samsung) there is alot of lag on the phone, its almost impossible to type cause its so annoying! lol its weird cause i thought it was the rom and tried flashing a few roms and it was all the same! found out it was because i was using a htc charger instead of the samsung one. weird cause its the same charging specs and a micro sd cable is all the same!!
Yea I've heard of that. It's indeed weird. I think there is something about it in the manual as well if I remember correctly (yes I read the manual for once!). Any ideas on the home screen/scroll lag?
I'm only on 2.3.3 ROM stock, and it's been great so I don't find the need to flash to other custom ROMS yet
The Touchwiz homescreen for me is buttery smooth. I mean, I've loaded alot of widgets on the thing and it's still smooth
ADW Launcher Ex homescreen scrolling is laggy for me though. No idea why, as the rest of the functions fly (ie app drawer scrolling, app opening, etc)
i also feel there's a tiny lag sometimes... don't know why... btw,i'm using go launcher
I'm also on stock 2.3.3 now and I think I'm going to stay with stocks for a while. I've used different launchers including ADW Launcher Ex and Go launcher Ex but they all have lag at some area. @rantzzz have you used an iphone before? how would you compare the homescreen to our S2. @sept20 can you please look under the battery and see where your phone was made? I.e. mine was made in korea. Thank-you.
Comparing the iPhone homescreen scroll and the Touchwiz 4.0 scroll on SGS2, the iPhone is much much smoother
But the stock Touch wiz 4.0 isn't a slouch also. There is a noticeable fraction of a lag when you swipe, but nothing too big
Thanks for confirming rantzzz. Yeah that fraction of lag when you swype is what I'm talking about. I also experience something similar in my apps drawer. I just can't figure out why Samsung couldn't have optimized something so small and argumentatively most important since it's the portal to everything you do on your phone! Maybe they will fix this in a future update or possibly in ICS.
Well i noticed if i use the 2x4 weather widget i get lag scrolling, shrinking it down and i lost the lag. I dunno if this will help you guys but worth a pop.
I get the lag no matter what, 100 widgets or no widgets. It would be interesting to hear if it helps anybody else though.
OP, Can you give us a full list of all software installed on your device, because I've NEVER seen lag on my phone. I've used TouchWiz, Launcher Pro and have finally settled on Go Launcher, and this phone makes the iPhone 4 looks slow and tedious, so I can only suggest that you have some software that is causing problems.
Edit: Okay, it doesn't make the iPhone 4 look slow. But it is clearly faster and smoother.
A list of software is pointless because I'm experiencing the problem at absolute stock. Whether it is my stock vodafone rom or a stock custom rom. If you wouldn't mind johncmolyneux could you please look under your battery and see where your phone was made? Also what rom and kernel you are using? Thank-you

I have to disagree here, my mate has an iPhone4 and compared to my GS2 it's definitelty not as smooth,my GS2 is much faster too and the display whilst good on both phones is definitely better on mine even my mate (relucantly) admitted that.
Scrollable wallpapers and live wallpapers kill the smoothness. Have a stationary wallpaper that doesn't scroll as you swipe and you'll see how smooth this baby is.
iPhone's launcher seems smoother because it doesn't let you install any wallpaper that'll slow down the homescreen.
I believe it is smooth. My friend (Iphone 4) user actually used my phone and he said that it was smoother and faster than his Ip4. But then again, actually at that time I just purchased it like an hour before. So it was really stock brand new and I have not actually installed anything yet.
I think the word 'lag' is misleading. Lag would actually imply that when you swipe the screen that it takes a moment to react. Do you really have that problem? I do not. The only time I could say I have with lag is the home button reaction speed - which isn't lag, it's because of the voice activation feature.
HOWEVER ...
What I would say is that slowly swiping between screens is far from buttery smooth - I would describe it as slightly juddery. If you swipe fast you barely notice, and if you scroll through the dots it's beautifuly smooth and impressive! BTW I've had 3 different firmwares and casual screen swiping has been equally unsmooth on all..
My question to all is... If you casually/slowly swipe between screens, do you find the animation smooth or a little juddery?

Mine was made in Korea and I'm using stock ROM (XWKE2) that has been rooted.
I've been so happy with stock ROM that I'm not seeing any need to put anything custom on it.
Hope you find the cause of your problem mate, because your phone is definitely not living up to its possibilities! Any chance of a video of your lag?

Launcher pro reminds me of one que I had- when i was using villain rom 1.4 lite, the launcher pro that came preinstalled didn't have any lag, but when I installed launcher pro on villain rom 1.4 (full version), i felt laggy app browser... why is it so? its also true with adw and go launcher... only thing changed now is that villain rom 1.4 days are gone with release of villain rom 2.0...

Does this sort out the huge font in the notifications? If not, can you change that please?
this is just the a task bar theme for now will do more tonight, just wanted to release the taskbar theme since there were a few threads on it will do all the icons and have it done in a few days, also will do the notifications at some point in my bust week.
so far loving this theme, any chance that you will also change the clock and the settings page to look like stock honeycomb too?
Woohoo! Now I can update. I can't stand the TouchWiz theme, looks like I'm going backwards in technology.

The bar icons, the clock, and the settings page are probably the only things holding me back from sticking with the TW ROM.... I put Calkulin's deodex'd version a few days ago and was back to the vanilla 3.1 in a matter of 10 minutes! It really looks horrible and needs to be reverted!

I think it's humorous that people think there were so many improvements from ADDING stuff to the vanilla 3.1 that shipped with the 10.1.... show me 3 people who have had better Quadrant scores after adding a new UI, because I really didn't see it for the 10 minutes I had it on my Tab before going right back to my backed up stock ROM.
And yes, if I overclock my stock 3.1, why WOULDN'T I want to keep it over this silly UI upgrade???

I don't have a ton of apps on my tab, but I get better performance with stock Android than the TW update.
The only improvement I see is the browser. I can use dolphin to fix that, and the new look is very unappealing to me. I also get better home screen performance on standard honeycomb.

1. Stock quadrant scores are around 1500. Touchwiz quadrant scores are 2300.
2. With touchwiz, the galaxy tab 10.1 is now the only honeycomb tablet with no keyboard lag in the browser. Samsung fixed something in the webkit engine or something. Stock honeycomb on the galaxy tab 10.1 and every other tab in existence has the lag.
3. The samsung Widgets are fantastic.
The killer feature for me was fixing the browser lag. I can now finally type on sites like XDA without wanting to break my tab in half.
But the point at my previous post was that I was shocked that people who remove touchwiz because they dididnt like some icons and colors. This is a computer, not a fashion accessory. Did you buy a tablet to do stuff with it, or for it to look pretty?

This is ridiculous, but since I'm bored, I'll play along.......
Prove it - saying Quadrant scores are X doesn't mean anything to me. I said that in the reply, but you just told me what you thought they were. I ran Quadrant on mine stock and it did 22XX, so I don't know where you're getting this 1500 score..... I got that with a deodex'd and OC'd Captivate, a single core PHONE.....
Two words (that have already been said above) - DOLPHIN BROSWER.... I don't use Dolphin because I really don't see any lag that everyone else is talking about. I have a 4GHz OC'd Quad Core PC, so it isn't like I don't know what a fast electronic device is.....
Widgets..... seriously? so THAT'S what's important on this list? You're talking about comparing this to a fashion accessory (which I agree it's not), and you're talking about widgets??? Really? This is NOT a computer, btw.... my Dell Inspiron Duo tablet IS a computer. A 10.1" touchscreen computer running dual boot Windows 7 and Android 2.2. THIS, however, is something that should work quickly, which I feel it really does already, and look attractive. If you didn't want something that looks attractive, you should have saved your money and bought a Transformer - cheaper looking screen, thicker and heavier device, and you can OC that thing and have all the widgets you like without having to worry about people "complaining" on here about this being a "fashion accessory"
And look at this, I'm not the only one who thinks so:
This update brought some new widgets called Live Panels along for the ride, and honestly, what can I say about them? They're widgets. They have the same look and feel of the other features in TouchWiz UX, but using them is purely optional. I opted to [stay] with the widgets that I was using prior to the update, as I found Live Panels to be much too large for my taste.
From an aesthetic aspect, one of the most drastic changes that came with this update is the Settings menu. It shed its sleek black-and-blue Honeycomb look for a coat of white and some new cartoon-y looking icons. Much like the updated Calendar and Email apps, it's not bad, just different.

They also say all the same things you were saying about the speed improvements and what not, but I'm not interested in making something function faster than it already is while losing the form - you're a car guy, it sounds like, so what if you junked up your Evo X while making it faster? You've already got a fast car, so why not making it look cheezy AND fast at the same time? Yeah, I wouldn't do that with either of my performance vehicles, I don't know many that would......

1) The speed improvement on touchwiz is undeniable... I'm sorry, but Touchwiz is WAY faster and a hell of a lot less buggy. On stock 3.1 (again, right out of the box) I had my browser crash no less than 20 times during around and hour of browsing. It also soft booted 3 times during this period. None of this has happened on Touchwiz. I did not run any quadrant tests, but immediately after installing touchwiz I noticed the speed improvement. No scrolling/transition lag, etc.
2) Dolphin for Tab did not fix the typing lag on 3.1 - Right out of the box I installed it any tried it out. It lags as bad as the stock browser.
3) Why do you care if he like the widgets? If he loves the widgets, that is reason enough to go with Touchwiz
Not it may seem like I am defending Touchwiz. In fact, overall, I really dislike the changes. What I am saying is, touchwiz is, in fact, faster than stock honeycomb. However, the redesign is absolutely terrible. Honeycomb went from modern and sophisticated, to blocky and cartoonish. I would absolutely love the speed and bug improvements without the new UI. As much as I want to go back to stock 3.1, the bugs are forcing me to stay with touchwiz.
EDIT Just ran some benchmarks:
Stock 3.1 Honeycomb: 1448
3.1 Honeycomb Touchwiz: 2267
Like I said, Touchwiz is faster
+1 to better quadrant scores with TW. Stock was in 1500s, TW 2200s and TW plus pershoot's kernel hit 2800!
But seriously, can we get back to the thread title: stock theme for TW. Many including myself would find TW rom + stock theme the ideal for the moment.
I mean, with roms and themes and all, it is for each his own, and this thread is about stock theme for tw.
Hey everyone! I currently own a Droid Eris that's completely rooted and running Gingerbread.
I'm so used to launchers now, I really can't go back to sense. Sense is bloat, and really hogs up the phone's resources.
With all this said: Can the Rezound use launchers like Launcher Pro or ADW EX?
But also, if Launcher Pro was running, is sense still running in the background? Is my performance going to be worse off? Is there any way to freeze all of that background gunk while launcher pro is doing it's thing or will it constantly stay there eating up my RAM?
Thanks guys, I'm just really used to my Eris being sense-less and scared about the performance of the Rezound being muddled down with sense.
Performance is fine, you need to relax. Eris just sucks because it is slower than balls and has no ram.
Yes you can use other launchers and performance will still be great.

I'm using launcher pro on mine, sense doesn't seem to keep running, at least the launcher, considering i got a couple extra hours of battery when i switched... could be useage, but i think LPP definately helped some.
Your phone closes any background apps that aren't being used if more ram is needed for your active apps. If you download a third party launcher like Go or LauncherPro and let them run for a while then try to go back to the Sense launcher it'll more than likely take you to the HTC loading screen meaning it was closed automatically by the system beforehand.
So basically it'll eventually be closed automatically once you start using another launcher.

if you use the rezound with sense, it'll still be 50x faster than the eris WITHOUT sense on it at all. believe me. my eris is running CM and it's still slower than this thing lol
I also used go and there was significant lag with 2 widgets on 1 screen.

Launcher Pro Plus here, too. I sometimes go back to Sense just for fun and something different for a couple days (I REALLY like it's People widget better than LPP), but always end up coming back.
Now if I could just find a better people/quick dial widget.....
I run both LP and GO.
I however see no lag with GO.... 5 screens multiple widgets

I really really like the people widget on the latest Blur (like on the Razr)...It's the one with a grid of favorite contacts that displays the top 4 on the home screen but you can pull it down like a shade to show the rest of the grid. I wonder if it's possible to extract that widget and run it on other phones/launchers.
I'm using Go Launcher along with the lockscreen. According to the task manager I've saved well over 200MB of memory in the process. Once this phone gets some ROMs coming out, it will be a really nice phone. I keep seeing that the Gnex speaker is weak. Along with no SD slot, a rooted, ROM'd Rezound will be a solid long-term phone.

agreed, set up go launcher as well and very pleased with it. Nice change of pace. only thing I need to figure out is the size of the docks so I can install a few. tried the ones from lpro but they dont look right not big enough that is.
Go launcher is amazing. No lag, smooth like butter. iWhat?
I saw some lag with Go did I did not see on the Razr. It was going from one screen with people widget to another screen with calendar, and the cylinder transition effect. It was not horrible though.
I've used Go Launcher exclusively on every phone for the last two years. On the Rezound it absolutely screams.
Don't get me wrong, I really like some of the Sense features and widgets but Sense was draining the battery, creating lag and causing restarts.
I use a dark theme in Go and battery life has improved noticeably.

Funny how different each device is from the other. It must be what we install (other apps, launcher setup, etc.) that is impacting our performance I'm a huge lpro plus fan but was having weird lag issues with it on the rezound. I tried go launcher and it seems much smoother. lol. I do agree on the lpro widgets and would like to try it again but I'm still perplexed why we would see any lag with the horsepower on this device? Could it be the launchers are not optimized or the hd screen or sense running in the background? Just throwing out possibilities with zero knowledge or proof. lol.
I think I may just try lpro again to see if it was just a one-off situation since go launcher is working well. thanks.

Honestly, I think you see lag for the same reason you see lag on practically every Android device other than the GS2. Android makes very little use of a device's GPU, and most Android devices have crappy GPU's anyway. It's ridiculous that Android is finally going to natively use the GPU for graphics processing (what a concept!) in it's 4th iteration.
Hello everyone,
For like 2 year now I still have iPhone 3G which was very relaxing (but now slow) so when I thought of update I thought about getting Android
So I got the Galaxy S2, It's a great phone with great hardware but I really guys dont know what exactly to tell you or what to say
but I find iPhone way more relaxing than Android and I really can't tell why
maybe the colors maybe the design of the android it self I really dont know
even though a lot of apps are available and everything is customizable but still
something is wrong for me and I dont know what it is, the motion and effects of the iphone are smoother or just better and gives you this great feeling and its not what it is on android
Also the keyboard, even though my screen is 4.3 inches and the keyboard is larger but I find that iPhone's keyboard is better it just feels good
My hope is very high with ICS 4 that Google would take care of UI and UX better than that, also organizing everything to make it easier or something
I know I'm not accurate but I just wanted to tell you guys to tell me what you really think and if its me only or everyone and also if you have a solution for this
Thanks

Iphone uses a very high resolution IPS LCD screen ("retina" is just a fancy marketing word for that), not AMOLED based like the Samsung phones (thus color reproduction will not be the same). If you don't like the default colors, try another theme (system themes require root to change, launcher themes do not).

Try a different launcher. Something like Go Launcher is pretty close the iphone. If that's not enough, try the MIUI ROM (requires root) for your phone if you haven't. MIUI is as close as you will get period to having an iphone while still having an android phone.

Try another keyboard than the one the phone comes with (such a swype or swiftkey)? Generally the stock keyboard sucks.
Most iphone users that just start on android are not aware of the many replacement options (or if they are, they're not aware of specific ones that would solve their issues).
There's a saying that goes something like "If one is given infinite choices, some people will never be happy (since that they will forever think there is something better than what they currently have), but if one is told what choices they have, then they just grin and bear it, because that's all there is."
First thanks for your reply
but I already have Go Launcher and its okay for now
but actually I would like to install MIUI but I have a problem, I dont have a SD Card on my Galaxy S2 its just the internal memory so is there's anyway to install it without SD Card just using the internal memory ?
in both ways I will wait for android 4 I read about it and its really interesting that Google noticed that they have issues with their UI and I hope they solved this issue
Anticipating the release of TSF Shell Pro, the fancy UI that is scheduled to be released today on the Android Market.
Anyone know what rom they are going to use with this UI? Assuming AOSP may be better then Sense for this, but not really sure. Perhaps even a really light weight AOSP. Does anyone know if it runs on ICS?
I will most likely be running it on MIUI seems like a good start.

Anyone know what rom they are going to use with this UI? Assuming AOSP may be better then Sense for this, but not really sure. Perhaps even a really light weight AOSP. Does anyone know if it runs on ICS?
I will most likely be running it on MIUI seems like a good start.

LOL, its a launcher which can run on any phone with any ROM, it doesnt matter if its sense,AOSP,Touchwiz, blur or anything. The only requirement will be that the device, on which you are running it, should have a specific version of android. Most of the apps require android versions 2.1 and above. Now it depends upon the developer of the app whether he has made it compatibe with ICS or not. But it will work on Gingerbread as most of the apps do.

Simply just wondering what rom people were going to use it on. It certainly doesn't matter which however running it on a bloated Sense rom may not yield the same snappy performance that AOSP has.
TSF is the launcher, but you obviously still get the notification bar of the native rom your using, some fit better then others with this rom.
I tried it on Eternity 3.0 and MIUI. It seemed a bit speedier on MIUI but keeping it on Eternity for the 3d cam.
I gotta say, it runs exceptionally well on just stock Sense. I'm kinda impressed. Needs some tweaking to be sure, and more features to justify the price, but it's a good start.
