Anyway to get install_recovery.sh deleted without root? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to install Tenfar's CWM in order to flash the Alien rom, but root explorer won't allow me to delete this file without root. Rooting this phone on gingerbread has proven to be a bigger hassle than Tenfar's CWM.

You could install a pre-rooted and bootloader unlocked 4.5.91 sbf. Obviously DO NOT use RSD to flash anything that is not Gingerbread. This is the easiest way to have root in Gingerbread and from there you can install Tenfar's CWM, or you could start researching to decided if you can get away with installing the new version of CWM that has just shown up in the development forum which works properly with Rom Manager. I can confirm that this newer version does work properly with Rom Manager after I flashed Alien build #3 just a couple of hours ago.

use preinstall method to obtain root on 2.3.4. sbf can be risky. http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-hacks/3039-root-2-3-4-using-fastboot.html

Well I installed this prerooted, preunlocked 2.3.4 rom and my phone is unlocked. Now my problem is I can't go any further because my phone is unrecognized in fastboot mode, I've reinstalled atrix drivers but adb is still "waiting for device".

Are you in fastboot mode trying to use adb? In fastboot you need to use moto-fastboot or fastboot. Boot the phone up completely and use adb and see if it is recognized.

Recovery Image Messed Up..Launcher Crash..help please!

My recovery image seems to be messed up since I can't boot into it. My phone will boot but everytime it does ADW crashes over and over not allowing me to do anything. What can I do to go about getting the recovery fixed again and reflashing to try to smooth everything out?
*Edit*.I think I may have thought of a work around. I emailed my self the launcherpro.apk and installed it through gmail. Now I can access my phone. Now I just need to flash a working recovery..
I do appreciate your help though Riley.
You can try downloading ADW Launcher, putting it on your SD card and boot from recovery, then flash the launcher. It is a far shot, but if launcher is the only problem, maybe reflashing it will do the trick.
** EDIT ** My apologies. I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to a corrupted recovery image that you had made of your ROM!
You say you can't boot into recovery/ what's your phone do or say when trying to boo4 in recovery? You may have to push new recovery image via fastboot.

If you have USB debugging turned on you can flash Amon_RA via an adb shell using the flash_image tool - exactly the way the original Eris rooting process worked. With your phone looping, it will run very slowly, but will still succeed.
If you have the S-OFF bootloader installed, you can flash the recovery with fastboot.
I'll have an XDA admin move this thread to the Q&A forum.
Ok guys..I got launcher pro installed so I can actually access my phone now. I attempted to Flash a recovery with Rom Manager and it says it succeeds but it will never boot into it. I do have the bootloader with the "off". Is there a market app or something that can easily flash the recovery? I only ask because I am not at my PC with the android sdk stuff.

If you can't get to a PC to use adb, you could use a root shell in a terminal emulator to flash recovery using flash_image. That's kind of painful/tedious though - almost enough so to make it worth your while to just wait until you get back to your PC.
It is technically feasible to put together a flashable ROM to re-flash the recovery, but I'm not aware of anyone having done so for the Eris.
Oh ok..well I have RA Eris 1.6.2 recovery on my sd card. So I can just flash it via the termninal emulator, right?
** I tried to install via terminal and it says "header is the same, not flashing recovery". Do you think I could install the stock Eris recovery and reflash Amon's?
UPDATE!!: I got a recovery to flash..YAY..thanks guys

are you using "flash_image"? If so, where is it from? To my knowledge (the statically linked version from Amon_RA - /sbin/flash_image) is a pretty simplistic program - it performs no checks, and will let you flash total garbage to any named partition on your phone. (Which is why you should verify the md5 of the recovery image before you flash it, BTW; you can use the AFV app for that)

flyer with offficial hc ota htc unlock

Hi I've been doin a lot of reading of this forum. My main question is can I install a no sense hc Rom from just performing an HTC unlock or do I need to downgrade to gb anyway in which case I may aswel go s off while I'm at it.
I'm running hc official ota
There is no true no sense rom available as of yet
ok but if i just used the htc unlock could i then easily flash the new virtuous rom which has just started been developed?
Problem is i cant find the correct ruu to downgrade my device, its a uk 16gb wifi . I thought id found it but the site wont let me download.
You should be able to flash clockwork, then a custom ROM through fastboot without downgrade and root.
Haven't done it myself, but that is my understanding of how the unlocked bootloader works versus real S-Off.
I managed to do this hardware unlock and now have an unlocked bootloader. Tried. To flash cwm and corrupted the recovery. How do you install CWM through fastboot?

You have get CWM recovery, go into fastboot, connect USB, and then install via command prompt.
If you are unaware of how to do this try installing recovery via Rom Manager. Might be your easier solution.
Thanks for the reply, I actually downloaded cwm from a post in the dev section. Flashed it through command line with fastboot and now when I boot from recovery the device is stuck on a white HTC screen.
Also tried to use Rom manager but the device has to be rooted first. Can you root it through fastboot without cwm? Can I get a download link for a working cwm?

[Q] Need OTA Update

Basically, I need the 4.4.2 OTA.
I unlocked the bootloader. I need root to get S-off. Except I'm currently on S-on and the only way to install a recovery and get root is to have S-off (correct me if I'm wrong). Any workaround to this that isn't super complicated?
I've checked USB ports, and I can't seem to get my device to be recognized. "fastboot devices" shows up nothing. Currently unlocked, and S-on.
Forgot that unlocking bootloader again would wipe my phone, forgot to make backup, so everything's deleted ;(. Not possible to get s-off anymore?
Any help would be appreciated.

You just need an unlocked bootloader to install a recovery, when you are in fastboot (if you turn the phone on and do adb reboot fastboot, or hold down vol down and power and select fastboot when the HBOOT menu comes up) you can do the command line fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (recovery.img being your recovery you want to load) you can then start the phone up, copy superuser.zip on there somewhere and install with your custom recovery.
All that said, you don't need to do any of that to do 4.4.2 OTA, and in fact it wont install if you have a custom recovery. Are you having a problem that it wont download/install. If your phone is stock other than an unlocked bootloader it will install (trust me i just did it). If you have stock recovery just download the 4.4.2 OTA file from the other thread, then save it to the phone somewhere, the go to recovery in HBOOT, wait 1 second and then hold up vol and power for 5 seconds (may have to do this more than once). Menu comes up, do wipe cache, and then do install from device storage.
After thats done you can follow my above instructions and root it
Sorry if I didn't state it more clearly, but my issue is I can't install a recovery. I can boot into bootloader and fastboot but when I type in "fastboot" devices on my PC nothing comes up.

Have you installed HTC Sync? When you boot into the bootloader then fastboot and then plug in your usb cable does it say "fastboot usb" on screen?

I uninstalled HTC sync so as to not have it interfere with any s-off/etc. programs. I still have HTC drivers installed. Re-install both HTC sync and drivers?

HTC Sync won't interfere with anything. You need that and the drivers installed for it to work, I would start there and see what happens.
I'll re-install it again.
Is there anything I can do to just completely get back to stock everything? Willing to manually update it but I'd like to be able to just go to settings and just update via OTA from there.

As long as you have an active AT&T SIM card in there it will update even with an unlocked bootloader, even if its rooted. As long as you didn't mod anything. I just did the update like this, it worked fine.
I've rooted and unlocked the bootloader before but I've unrooted since then. Is there still a chance I just haven't gotten the update pushed to my device yet?

Thanks. I have that file all ready to go in my folder. Only problem I have now is that I can't get s-off. I've installed recovery + custom kernel but the su binaries are outdated for both superSU and superuser. I've tried to flash a 4.3 version of superSU only to have the same error.
I followed instructions for root after I flashed a super tool I also flashed a custom kernel. After I rebooted is where I started to get the "outdated binaries" prompts.

Ok that changes things. IMO you need to backup your data, install the 4.3 RUU to wipe everything out and make sure you have stock recovery, then you can install the OTA zip from stock recovery, or go ahead and download it direct from AT&T. You can then root and go from there. Now as for S-Off if you have HBOOT 1.55 or newer I don't think you can get it. I can't get it on mine I tried every way possible. You don't need S-Off for this to work

[Q] Easy Question

I am on a (completely stock) AT&T HTC One (4.4.2) and I was thinking about trying out some custom ROMs. Can I just use the HTC dev tool to unlock the boot loader? How would I root after that?
I am still new to it so that's about as far as I've gotten in the process. Especially since most of the tutorials I've seen are older and do not exactly mention 4.4.2.
P.S. ~ Kingo root seems to have a very simple HTC boot loader unlock tool as well as an easy method to root. I used the root method on my GS4 a while back and it went pretty well. Are there any downsides to using these?

Getting started with rooting and putting Roms on your phone is no time to get Lazy !
The steps are very simple but learning it the correct way comes in handy down the road.
unlock the bootloader at htcdev.com
use the drivers and adb/fastboot I'm posting below
after you bootloader is unlocked
you use fastboot to flash custom recovery on the phone
TWRP 2.6.3.3 is recommend - Download TWRP
The commands to flash it are
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now enter recovery and on Exit it ask to Root the phone
choose Yes - swipe to root
when the phone boots up go in the app drawer and open SuperSU
it will ask to update choose yes and TWRP method of install
Your phone is now unlocked / rooted / with custom recovery
Now is the time to make a backup in TWRP and copy it to your PC for safe keeping. Your now all set to flash custom roms

[Q] Restore root access after KitKat update

I flashed the stock recovery then applied the update for kitkat
All works well except i now have no root access. Streaming apps tell me the phone is rooted but apps that require root say it is not rooted.
I still have S-OFF but the phone is locked. how can I get root access? I cannot install a recovery because the phone is locked but I cannot unlock it as I do not have root in ADB shell.
Its a catch 22 and the only way I think i can fix t would to be to use HTC to unlock the device again and wipe all my data..
Please help

If s off.... Simply boot phone to fastboot and flash the custom recovery of your choosing from there. Then in your custom recovery flash the latest supersu.Zip
That's it.
No that didnt work because even if S=OFF you still cant flash if the bootloader is locked, i bit the bullet and used HTCdev again, phone is now wiped but was finally able to install recovery and root

I think he meant he couldn't fastboot flash it, which cannot be done if the bootloader is locked. But yeah could have used the RUU mode. Pays to research things

Lol... They both take fastboot commands. ☺
Alternatively the zip could have been placed on his SD card and loaded from hboot.
