Hi, I can't post in the synergy rom thread because I need at least 10 posts but someone over here will probably know anyway.
I flashed synergy rom onto my phone.
Usually for internet tethering I used PDAnet for usb thether and Wifi Thether (rooted) for wifi thethering.
I can open sprint hotspot but i don't want to click anything because I don't want to pay $40 a month.
I would like to use it instead because it is intergrated into the quicklaunch bar but would like some clarification.
Yes, hotspot unlocked=free. Shhhhh keep it a secret ;-p

Any form of wireless tethering has never worked for me, even with all of the 'hotspot unlocks' that are going around in the android development forum. The stock sprint hotspot does not work as it notifies me that my account doesn't have this option, and neither does wireless tether or barnacle. Running latest Supra rom.

TY I was gonna ask the same question as above
I've been able to create a wireless hotspot to share my 3G but not my 4G connection, which I believe matches what several other people have said in this thread about not having that feature on their account.
I've tried three tether apps so far:
- Sprint Hotspot (unlocked on Senseless 1.1 ROM)
- Barnacle (market)
- Wireless Tether (market)
With 3G both sprint and barnacle work. The client can connect and access the internet. The third app "wireless tether" for whatever reason didn't work for me, client had "limited or no connectivity".
But with 4G nothing worked. The Sprint Hotspot app shuts down the 4G connection. "Not subscribed to Hotspot/USB tethering service" "Your account does not include Mobile blah blah"
Barnacle with 4G still connects "ad hoc" and 4G stays up, which sounds like a promising start, but the connected computer can't load google or do anything useful.
So am I missing anything? Is it the case that all the tethering apps are only capable of sharing the 3G connection and not 4G?
Running synergy hotspot nightly from last tuesday when I downloaded it, I was able to enable and connect my laptop to the interwebs during a tigertrap session today. Seems to be working fine. What settings are you using in the hotspot app?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
are you using 4G signal with your hotspot tethering?
i am using nightly synergy rom with hotspot unlocked.
i believe i am using 4G signal while tethering, but it looks like its only using 3G, does your 4G icon in your notification bar appear?
I wouldnt call it "FREE", but you now have the option to use it without paying for it...

The 4G doesn't work with the hotspot unless it is through USB. I believe I read that somewhere around here...

In case a few of you are still looking for this. I'm using Wifi Tether 3.1-beta5 (included in SteelROM v2.02) and the 4G tether works great! Just make sure that you change the Device-Profile to "HTC Evo 3D" and enable the Routing Fix and it works great. Haven't tried barnacle but there may be similar config needed there as well.
I also asked SteelH about the Sprint Hotspot Hack and 4G here you can read his response but in short no the Sprint hotspot hack does not currently work on 4G. Hope that helps!
Barnacle works for me
I am running the stock rom with root and Barnacle works fine for me I used it for an hour yesterday with no problem. I have to go into town to get 4G so haven't tested it with 4G yet.
My sprint moble hotspot says that I don't have a plan that supports wifi teathering though if I try and use the sprint app.
For those of you saying its not working and have Droid wall installed, make sure the proper apps are white listed.

Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:

Download the latest. I have found this to be the best app for the job.
Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...
droid-life.com/2011/05/31/verizon-begins-blocking-wireless-tether-asks-that-you-purchase-a-plan/
Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/wireless-tether/
The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !
Another option for USB tethering would be PDANet. I use that for tethering my Mac

Regular WiFi teather in the market
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
On the majority of roms, using unlocked sprint hotspot seems to be the best. Some report success with wifi tether...I do not recommend it, it is on/off for working. Barnacle works very good on stock. All these are 3G connections. For 4g, I don't know..we really don't have it here....uurrrgggg!
The 4g hotspot kinda works. When you turn your 4g on, it shows 4g wifi hotspot active on task bar but switches to 3g wifi hot spot. That was on supra rom, havent used 4g since i switched back to viperrom.

PdaNet
I bought PdaNet for my Hero and it worked to get me out of a network jam at my house today on my 3VO. Uverse crashed just as I was starting a meeting, so I quickly switched to PdaNet and kept my connection going.
zedomax posted a youtube video with a DL link http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/apk/wifitether/wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk for a beta wifi tether app that I have been using flawlessly with 4G. I see around 10-11MB down all day long at home and work on it with my laptop. Unfortunately it will connect with 3G enabled but crawls for some oddball reason. I use barnacle which yields much better results on 3G.
Credit goes to colestein on androidcentral for this. Figured id post it here since i haven't seen it anywhere here on XDA.
I'm using WiFi Tether 3.1 beta 6
Download the Data Enabler widget from the Market
Setup Wifi Tether as Nexus One, netd, mms clamping enabled
Use Data Enabler to shut off 3g
Start tethering
once tethering is started, enable 4g
You should have a consistent 4G signal and the benefits of infrastructure mode!
Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work? Im completely functional except my phone reboots once every 2 hrs or so...
I have 3 questions about wireless tether. Currently have it set up in infrastructure mode, and it is working great. I have wake lock on, not disabled because if the screen went to sleep, the connection would drop.
Wifi Tether profile is set up as Nexus One, netd enabled.
Here are my 3 questions.
1. When I enable wifi tether, the sprint tether icon appears in the taskbar. The software works, and I tether fine, but am I now registering tethering with the sprint network?
2. I do not have mms clamping enabled, What does it do, and should I have it enabled?
3. What does the enable routing fix option do?
This is working for me as well
Thanks!!
Sounds good, I look forward to testing this once I receive my Photon.
We have a similar fix like this for the Epic4G in that forum, but it's much more complicated and involves editing the framework.jar of the ROM.
Since 99% of tethering apps are filtered on the market for our phones, thanks to Sprint, a post to the file or an attachment of it would probably benefit the users of it in a greater capacity.
By the way folks, even though he isn't the creator of this workaround, the OP usually deserves a little thanks...
Worked for me in 3g. Very fast. I also get the tethering or mobile hotspot active (sprint mobile hotspot) but I just ignore it.
BTW, how is battery for most while plugged into the computer usb for charging while tethering. Mine can't keep up with the drain from the phone.

Woah! Awesome. Is PDA-Net an App or pls explain?
EDIT: NVM, found it. Can't believe the Market would allow such an App... thanks guys!!

Restarted tether. 4g infrastructure, Worked great. Figured it out this morning. No sprint popup in status bar either. Running netflix great through ps3.

Glad to see it's working for others as well! Sorry for not posting links. You can get WiFi Tether here:

There's a new version just released on 11/27/11, im gonna test it and see if it changes behavior in any way.
Data Enabler you can easily get from the market.
My phone still reboots every 2 or 3 hrs while tethering in infrastructure mode, not sure how to fix that

The sprint hotspot in that rom should be hacked to allow you to tether for free. If it isn't, it will tell you when you try to tether.
Otherwise, use Wireless Tether.

Wireless Tether is a good one. Think it is the only one that will let you use 4G to tether also if you are in 4G Wimax area. I use 4G at work to tether my iPad when I need to DL updates or something, otherwise just use my work wifi.

Before you start using it, launch the app, Menu, settings and change Device Profile to HTC Evo 3D, then go down and put check marks under MSS Clamping and Routing Fix. Start tethering.

I'm pretty positive it's an htc app for verizon. Here's a post on a thunderbolt that has it which explains it a bit.
http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thunderbolt-apps/7004-tethering-guard-2-3-4-a.html
If you google "tethering guard htc" there's a lot of info out there about it. Though if you don't have it I'd imagine there is something else creating a bottleneck for your bandwidth.
I'm using the latest version of open garden wifi tether on my rooted incredible 4g and the device profile is set to htc rezound. Encryption is WPA2-PSK, though it's set to auto. Tethered tablet got around 3Mbps dl, and 4 Mbps up on a test I just did, though it can vary.
Hope this helps.

Ah, I thought you had a incredible 4g since this is under the incredible 4g troubleshooting section. Most likely tethering guard is something verizon makes htc put on their phones, so sprint may use another app, or another method. I believe one of the reasons an htc one phone isn't on verizon yet is because htc did not like the software verizon required them to put on their phones (don't hold me to that though).
Also I use "Open Garden Wifi Tether" (Labeled in the play store "WiFi Tethering" by open garden) not to be mistaken with "Open Garden" by open garden. The former requires root and does not require the app to be on both devices as it simply creates a mobile hotspot. I'd suggest giving it a try.
If your carrier blocks it in the play store here is a direct link for the apk that open garden provides in it's description on the play store:

Well I could not find Open Garden Wifi on the app store. Followed your link and was able to install the apk. App looks very much like the WiFi Tether I have just with a background wallpaper and less options in settings. Device profile does not list EVO LTE, used Samsung galaxy nexus (CDMA/LTE) which work fine with my wifi tether app, but I could not get Open Garden to broadcast at all, tried several setting, also noticed there are no settings for MSS clamping and Routing Fix to check on. Those I have to have checked in order for my WiFi Tether app to work.(So I went back to WiFi Tether 3.3 beta 2) and I have a hotspot again but still at 3g speeds. Really miffed cuz at my location I get up to 19MBPS down and 9.42 up. When I turn on my WiFi Tether my friends with IPhones or tablets get like 1.26down and about same up. I have to do some serious searching on this one. There is a newer version of WiFi Tether 3.3 beta3 but that app does not work at all. I rooted my EVO LTE mainly for the tethering function. I apologize if I posted in wrong forum btw (I get Forum Dementia) easy. and again thanks for your advices. I think I'll have to poke Team Venom about the Viperg 3.1.6 Rom I'm running. I also used Titanium Backup and looked for any kind of tethering guard but my search only produced the actual WIFi tether app. Nothing resembling tether guard. Again thanks for all your help.
