[Q] Flyer rooted but dont have root access to edit build.prop - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

hi all,
I followed a few topics here and it was my first time doing all this for an android device. to be honest it is super confusing and Im lucky i got through all of them with Google's help
I was trying to edit the build.prop file to be able to make phone calls via BT but when I try to edit the file as in Pull it .. edit it and then Push it back in... it says YOU NEED ROOT ACCESS!
Here is what i did from the beginning..
I followed the instructions in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194709
then I rooted using the clockworkmod.. followed these instructions:
Copy su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip to your sdcard root
Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions below)
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip"
Then select "Yes - install su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip" to confirm
Then go back
Then reboot.
You're rooted!
then i went to the thread of enabling BT Phone calls for Flyer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185688
But I dont have permission to edit the Build.prop file. so I googled a bit and I downloaded the Android Commander application and installed Notepad ++ so i can do that via Windows but I still dont have root access for some reason. I see the Superuser app on my flyer btw.
Can anyone please help?
If I get this to work I will make a full detailed step by step instructions and post it in xda so everyone else follows the same steps (which half of them were not explained fully)
Thanks,
Kaveh.
EDIT>>>>> I promised a full detailed tutorial. I own you guys one... here is document: http://bit.ly/qR1OmO
and thanks for all the help!

You can try with Root Explorer ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&feature=search_result )
.touch 2 second build.prop, sellect Open in text editor

You don't have permission because its not mounted as r/w. You can mount it as r/w by using root explorer like the previous post said, or you can do it from adb or a terminal emulator on your device. Or someother editor. The command to mount as read write is this:
su (enter)
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system (enter)
Then you should be able to open the file in the editor of your choice.
After you are done remount the system as read only by doing this:
su (enter)
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system (enter)

I had the same problem until I installed Busybox did

Simple method.....
If you just install the ES Filexplorer app on a rooted device then go to settings in ES, under root explore section just tick the two boxes.
Set home directory from /sdcard/ to / and your done!
You can then go to the System directory, open build.prop as a text file using ES's own Note editor. Note editor will also save a backup of your old build.prop file.
Reverse the above ES settings if you want to be safe, close ES, then reboot.

Thanks for all the help guys. Im creating a step by step full detailed instructions for the htc flyer s-ff+permaroot+enabling phone calls and Ill share it in xda soon.
I had to download the apk of root explorer off the internet since I had no market access here in Iran (currently here for vacation..) then I used that to mount r/w then edited the file.. saved it and then I mount back to r/o.. reboot and BOOM PHONE app was there.
btw maybe this is a bit strange but I dont need BT headset to make phone calls lol. I used the normal headset which was in the box and everyone can hear me clearly.. perfect call quality..
thanks again for all the help and stay tuned for the instructions (i know u guys know the way already lol but still)

Bluetooth is not a necessity, it was added for full functionality eg: car handsfree, stereo headsets for music and calls etc.
You can make a call using just the tablet's mike and speakers, the supplied cable headset or any bluetooth earpiece/headset. Just like a real phone....

Oh really? but people dont hear my voice when I just use the tablet itself (without using the normal headset)
btw Im almost done with the tutorial for HTC FLYER... I need people to read this and edit it (complete it if I havent explained something somewhere)
I used afew topics to make this tutorial for other noob users like myself >.< and I put the source topics (XDA topics) in the file. Where should I post the tutorial? any ideas?

edited my post... here is the document I promised:http://bit.ly/qR1OmO
EDIT*** short link works now... sorry about that!

[New ROOT METHOD] No PC Quick ROOT!!! MT 3G SLIDE

J Ok so in my never ending struggle against the Evil Eclair/T-Mo/HTC NAND Protection and the Futility of Trying to flash a ROM With the "Supposed AndRoot QuIck Root Method" As well as a fine point from Nbetcher that the Engineering build must be flashed because Android has NAND protection while running. I have devised my own "No PC ROOT Method!!!"
Required Files (Tested For MT3G SLIDE Latest OTA Unrooted Stock)
1.Download Androot From Location of Choosing (I'm Using Version 1.6.2)
2.Download ESPRIMG.zip (ENG build)
3.Download SlideEng-Package.zip
4.Download Custom Rom Of Your Choosing(Mine Is CM 6.1.1 Stable)
5.Download Android Terminal Emulator(From Market)
6.Download Root Explorer Android (Requires Root) (From Market Or Some Place Online)
7.Download File Explorer (Dev:Adao Team)(From Android Market)
8.Download Latest Clockwork Recovery(I Used 2.5.0.1)
*Updated* 1/09/2011 (Thanks to dbzfanatic for links)

Please Note I Am NOT The DEV Behind these Apps nor am I Resposible For Any Damages You May Incur To Your Device or Warranty by using this Method! Also Before anyone says I repped someone off remeber I accidentally discovered this using 2 failed methods because they essentially cancel each other out.(The Latter Nbetchers works just not after the AndRoot One)!!!
So...
1st Download/Install all needed files from market( File Manager Android Terminal Emulator)
2nd Download all zip images, Recoveries, Roms, apps from phone browser Directly To SD ROOT(Google em until I get links up on Dev Forum)
3rd. Unzip SlideEng-Package.zip To Root using File Manager or Other Zip Program for android(Andro-Zip Works Well)
4th Change Name of Clockwork to Update.zip(Case Sensative)
5th Install AndRoot And Run Root Me With Install Su & Temp Root/Unroot After Reboot Selected(Or Else You Will Boot Loop)
6th Install And Run Root Explorer then Copy and paste flash_img and mtd0.img to /data/local on android device by multi-select copy then RM R/W in program in upper left on data local folder.
7th IMPORTANT!!! Long Press and hold each copied file and set permissions to allow read and write on both user and the lowest option (I Think Dev or system)
8th Run Android Terminal Emulator and type the following commands verbatim spaces included Pressing enter after each line($ n # will be there provided you follwed all steps if not go back to androot and root again):
$ su
# cd /data/local
# chmod 04755 flash_image
# ./flash_image misc mtd0.img
Now power off and reboot using VOL-DOWN + POWER
It'll reboot into the HBoot Screen and ask if you want to Check ESPRIMG.zip after Verifying it will ask you to flash Select Yes (VOL-UP) And Wait DO NOT POWER DOWN OR TAKE OUT BATTERY!!!
Once its Completed it will ask you to Reboot select no Instead and Go To Recovery
Now Select APPLY Update.zip to flash CLOCKWORK RECOVERY YAY!!! :-D Now We Can Flash a Custom Rom With Root and Even Go As Far As S-OFF!!! But Please Be Sure Its Already On Your Micro SD...
Select Wipe Data Factory Reset by Scrolling with VOL- UP/DOWN or Track Pad and Use Power/Trackpad TO Select.
Now Use Install Zip from SD Card to Install Custom Rom(Flash GApps Second if downloaded and desired if using CM Mod 6.1.1) Now Reboot And Enjoy!!! If you Wanna Flash Anything Else Use Rom Manager From Market and Som Custom Roms to Boot into Clockwork!!! Thanks to all the Devs and their tools and immense knowledge for Making this Possible! Thanks To All The ROM Chefs Too!!!

Edit:nvm, ill try it when i get my replacement slide.
I don't think the slide needs S-OFF to write to data but I do think it needs root beforehand, or at least shell root.
just to make it easier to anyone flashing this, i would put links to DL's of those files. first thing i noticed when i read. put me off to this method.
btw, this is me trying to help, not ripping on you

I don't think so? If /data couldn't be written to without root or s-off, how would people install apps who never rooted their phones? Where is the system data stored and modified? /data is fully modifiable I'm pretty sure.
I'm willing to admit I could be wrong on that but I thought apps were installed in /data because it was the system calling the package installer not the user.

In terms of read/write permissions, the system has the same permissions as the user. The system can't write to /system if the user can't, and vice versa. /data and /cache have no nand protection

In the post I did add if I had the time I would post links if not ill do it later to whomever above stated their statement. If you don't want to "Try" it don't and don't comment. It was an accident I found it and I have since replicated my process on 3 slides and it works. The Reason it does is because gaining temporary root inside android even without gaining full being blocked by nand or S-Off can be can be used to modify the permissions of system files while the memory is running tho not the actual NAND itself which I believe S-OFF does... So when I said 6th mount the drive as R/W in root explorer there is an option to remount the drive R/W to allow you to long press the items in that folder and change their permissions then I said unmount to save the permission fix that's what the Temp Root Gained from AndRoot Does.... Now I'm gonna try and update my Original post with links for people who want an esier time doing this like I would have liked and for the. Sarcastic ones so then you can just press the Thumbs Up button ok?

Your instructions don't have anything to do with /system I don't know what you are babbling about. I'm not disproving your root method, I was just trying to explain that /data is not nand protected. /system IS nand protected, and without s-off or a r/w overlay you wouldn't even be able to modify the permissions of files in /system, but since your root method has to do with /data it works.

I'm not babbling I was referring to the first reply but ur probably right about the sys files as I didn't mess with them. But I did obtain root anway all of the files can easily be found by doing a search on the XDA forums and ill add the links when I get to a pc doing this from the android browser is painful...

This would make it easier for new folks if you had links next to the items needed for this... you can't just tell others they need this and that with at least a link on where to find it or download it... like having me find a treasure chest without clues or a map just saying haha. good guide though and yes I did read you'll be adding links soon =p
Agreed links would help but if people google the files he mentioned they are all easy to find. Even new folks know how to google =D

The only thing about 4shared is that it doesn't work right on the stock HTC web browser, since javascript is kinda glitchy on that one. Works fine on froyo/cm6.1.1 with the aosp browser, but for a TRUE pcless method you need direct or mediafire links I think.
I post links because everyone *****es and yet someone still *****es. Those aren't my uploads, I simply posted them so people would stop *****ing. I personally haven't had issues with 4shared even with the stock browser back before I rooted my phone. If you want to reupload them to another hosting site be my guest but like I said, they aren't my uploads.
Stop whining
Here are some direct links for those who complain about the 4Share site.
Oh, and Ill put a gapps link up in thar too. It has the new market, and it works as long as you don't install anything until it finishes restoring. At least it did for me.
That Clockwork link is broken. I'm just sayin' :3

[GUIDE] ROOT | xRecovery | TIPS&TWEAKS to install custom Rom`s

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because people do not have respect for the work of other people or to the point of thanking all the links to the alternatives are "down" until further notice. Over 200 downloads and not a thank you?!
Thanks.
After receiving several PM `s trying to get my help in the installation of Froyo ROM` s i decided to create this little "How to" for the avoidance of doubt.
This is a guide based on the Windows XP System.
This guide is ONLY for Xperia X10.
This guide was based on information gathered and based on my own experience and presents, in my opinion, the best way to get what you want. Whenever possible I will present alternatives.
This guide has a starting point of the original ROM SE (no root) if you already have root access please go to step 2.
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
What you`ll need before proceeding:
- Download SDK from google (need help for this? go HERE)
- Make sure you`ve just one partition on your sdcard and on FAT32. More info HERE
- Before each and every step make sure you have USB Debugging checked (settings>applications>Development)
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG
1. Getting Root Access
1st mode
- Download file rootme.tar.bz2 HERE and follow the instructions or use as an alternative SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse;
- Reboot.
2nd mode
You can alternatively use THIS pre-rooted and with xRecovery allready instaled rom. Saying this, if you choose to install this rom can proceed to step 3
Use THIS tool if you have any trouble with Bin4ry one.
Bin4ry realease a new tool you can try it HERE.
2. Installing xRecovery
1st mode
- Download xRecovery HERE and do the installation by following the instructions.
2nd mode
For the case of having problems installing the xRecovery do the following:
- Download THIS version of xRecovery;
- unzip it and copy the content (3 files) to the root of your sdcard;
- Open cmd prompt (start>run and type cmd) - From now on i will call this adb shell. I also recomend that you create a shortcut to this on your desktop, since you will use this many times;
- Now go to tools folder where you install your SDK. In my case (C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\tools>);
Now type:
HTML:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
dd if=/sdcard/busybox of=/system/bin/busybox
dd if=/sdcard/chargemon of=/system/bin/chargemon
dd if=/sdcard/xrecovery.tar of=/system/bin/xrecovery.tar
reboot
Check your screen and give permition
- Reboot
- Press several times after "sonyericsson" appear on back button to confirm if xRecovery it`s installed. If it`s corrected installed you wil see your screen as the images bellow.
Although this guide is described for the installation of zhizu rom`s the process is exactly identical to the TripNRaVeRs and jerpelea rom`s
3. Installing Rom`s
This guide is for every rom that supports xRecovery process. I will not answer questions from other method.
- Choose the rom you want.
ZHIZU / TripNRaVers v2.1 / TripNRaVers vMIUI / jerpelea
3.1.
zhizu rom:
- Download-FreeX10 beta1.zip;
- Download gapps_latest_FreeX10.zip;
- Download FreeX10-beta1-hotfix4a.zip (at this point this is the last version, if a newer version exist please download that one. The process is identical);
- Create a folder at the root of the sdcard named ROMS;
- Create a folder inside ROMS called zhizu, TripNRaVers or jerpelea (dependind witch rom you`ll use);
- Copy the downloaded files to that folder;
- Reboot;
- Enter on xRecovery and:
3.1.1.
- Install custom zip;
- Choose custom zip from sdcard;
- ROMS (folder you created earlier);
- zhizu;
- Run the FreeX10-beta1.zip;
- Run the FreeX10-beta1-hotfix4a.zip;
- Reboot;
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
NOTES:
After that, probably you won`t have network and screen is crazy... do this:
Open adb shel again and type:
HTML:
adb shell
killall servicemanager
Your phone will reboot.
HAVE REAL ISSUES REGARDING "killall: not found"? type this instead (thks to NeoInc):
HTML:
adb shell
busybox killall servicemanager
If you`ve installed the TripNRaVers rom and if you have issues with wireless run this command on adb shell (thks to rodak ):
HTML:
adb shell
setprop net.dns1 192.168.1.1
If you having problems with su permission type (thks to AzureNightwalker ):
HTML:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
(back on topic)
- After reboot enter on xRecovery again and go where you put your files again but this time you will run the gapps_latest_FreeX10.zip
- DONNE
If after instaling gapps_latest_FreeX10.zip you still don`t have google apps, please install THIS and then gapps_latest_FreeX10.zip
4.
If you want to install new market, please do this:
- Enter AT LEAST once in the old one;
- Copy THIS to the folder you`ve created earlier and run it from xRecovery.
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------

some tips & tweaks to play with
Let`s play with build.prop shall we?
CAUTION WITH THIS!!! ALL CHANGES MUST BE DONNE AT THE END OF THE DOCUMENT!!!
What will you get with this...
Well. In my opinion and only that, i think this way i can preform a much stable version of 2.2 Froyo released by zhizu.
After all apps installed (more or less 35) i get a very stable and fast rom (more or less 1500 on quadrant) and rarely had a FC.
So...like i said...that`s my 2cents.
1st mode - root explorer
You can make changes directly through RE by going on \system and then:
- Press and hold on build.prop file;
- Check all Permitions on the drop down menu;
- Press and hold on build.prop file (again);
- Choose open in text editor;
- After changes were made save and exit;
- Reboot.
2nd mode - Through Text Editor
To edit this one you must do this on a UNIX system base. You can use THIS to do that.
- Copy your build.prop to your sdcard and then to your pc;
- Open build.prop through NOTEPAD++;
- Now check all permitions for build.prop in \system folder
- After you made the changes proceed in reverse way and check all permitions again;
- Reboot.
This is your build.prop of your phone. Here we can do some tweaks in it.
Look carefully some already exist somo you have to add.
ro.sf.lcd_density=XXX (here you can put any value between 180/240) - This will affect the way you see your screen;
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=XXX - This is how often your phone search for wi-fi spots and obviously will afect your battery life. Choose whatever you want in seconds. For instance, i have 360. Witch means my phone will search for wi-fi every 360 seconds.
dalvik.vm.heapsize=XXX (here you can put any value between 12/40) - This is how Android lead with apps. Lower value faster phone but big apps will crash. Higher value slower phone on small apps but faster on big ones). I have this to 40.
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=XXX (here you can put any value between 30/300) - This affect screen responseness of screen. You may try this if you have any problems with lag. I have this to 200.
mot.proximity.delay=XXX (here you can put any value between 0/300) - This will affect the time your screen goes off when receive a call. I have this to 150.

THIS ONLY WORK AFTER RIGHT INSTALATION OF THE ABOVE ROM´s
What is the joke of having rooted phone if we do not install anything to envy to our friends. Right?!

But hey, let´s have a lot of guides spread all around this forum just to get some credit
Hmm. Sorry. Got a question here.
Step 1 and 1a, is it the same? Or i need to do step 1 and then do step 1a?
And partition on my sdcard is already on Fat32, do I need to reformat it again to Fat32?

Hi,
1st. Like i said "alternatively". 1 is one way and 1a is another way. The diference between the two is the fisrt one you have to root after install and the second one came pre-rooted.
2nd. Since you`ve sdcard on FAT32 don`t have to do it again. Just be sure there`s ONLY ONE partition.
Hope it helps
Oh. sorry. I miss the "alternatively".
Which one is the best? 1 or 1a?

[TUTORIAL] Easy > Full Memory When Istalling Framework

Hey, guys. I'm a newbie / junior at XDA. My english is not so good. My posting is easy to do. Just need your careful. What are we need is
Rooted Devices
Root Explorer
Framework files (framework-res.apk)
X-Recovery (Of Course)
A thanks button for me haha
reframe.sh from propc

Follow this step:
(Thanks to propc
1-copy framework-res.apk that you want to replace to the root of your sdcard (make sure it's in root)
2-extract reframe.zip(attachment) to root of your sdcard
3. Use root explorer to delete the real framework-res.apk (If you still want to use your old framework, copy it to somewhere for future. )
4. Your phone will reboot. Enter to X-Recovery.
5. Go to partition tools--> "Mount \system" and "Mount \sdcard"
6. Open your Adb shell and type this
Code:
cd /sdcard
sh reframe.sh
(You don't need to type su again haha.. )
7. Finished. Of course, your phone can't reboot. Reboot manually.
If you like, give a thanks button to me

Read/write file access

Hello
Some of application such as Sygic, Aptoid, Waze and others cannot access to sdcard unless I reboot.
When verffying with Root Explorere I have noticed that the default access to Sdcard is R/O. As soon as I change that to Read/Write every thing goes right.
The problem is R/O keeps come back and apps cannot run until I do modification again.
Anyone can help please as to fix permenantly this issue.
Thanks

There are two ways
1 the easy way is an app from playstore to do that at every boot
Are many can do this
2 the hard way is a script
You can paste it to init.d folder or script manager execute at every boot
Do you have gtab?
And sd card should not have sysrw option
Something wrong with install of rom

Peculiar problem. Will have to do some tests and look at some logs to find out the cause.
1. Can you create or delete files/dirs. on the SDcard, and do these changes persist after a reboot? Or do they vanish--like the changes never happened?
2. What's the output of this command right after a reboot?
Code:
$ [B]mount[/B]

Yes I do have a Gtab 7.7 with JB.

There is no such device as a gTablet 7.7. Is this the tablet you have?
1. Use the standard file manager app and create or delete some files and directories on the SDcard. Reboot the gTablet. Verify that the changes you made remain after the reboot.
2. The $ character is just a prompt, used to indicate that the commands that follow can be executed by any user. Don't type that into the Terminal emulator app. Type in only the stuff shown in bold.
3. Setup adb (see the sticky threads) to make entering commands and collecting logs easier.
4. From now on post the exact error or diagnostic messages that you see. Or, make screenshots and post them.
I am very sorry to post my message here by mistzke.
Anyway I would like to thank all for your help and would like to inform you that the probme had been solved in installing a new tom.
Thanks znd sorry again

[Guide] How to have write protection disabled on boot with stock rom

For this to work you will need to be rooted with twrp installed.
This is for people who are on the stock rom or a rom without init.d support.
1. Download the wp_mod.ko file from @flar2's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701816
and copy it over to your SD card (either internal or external)
2. Boot into twrp
3. Select the "Mount" option on the main menu and tick system
4. Go back to the main menu and then go into the "Advanced" option. There will be a "File Manager" option
5. Navigate to the folder you saved the .ko file in and copy it (just touch the file and it will bring up the menu)
6. now navigate to /system/lib/modules and copy the file there by hitting the "select" button on the bottom right.
7. Navigate to /system/lib/modules and insure the file is there. Now touch it to bring up the menu. select "Chmod" option and enter in 644
8. reboot the device
9. Once booted fully open up Terminal emulator and type:
su
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
10. Once that's done open up a file manager app with root access and mount as r/w and navigate to /system/etc and look for the file install-recovery.sh
11. edit the file using a text editor, adding the line insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko towards the bottom of the file
12. reboot and enjoy r/w on boot without running the command every time
13. profit
is this like being s-off, without being actually s-off
Not entirely, you will be able to make changes to system files while booted but you won't be able to flash fastboot zips like s-off
Or you could flash this kernel.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705074
And yes it does work on stock

that will only work to repair writing to SD CARD. This fix is for writing to the system.
Personally... If you can get s off.. I would do so. Makes life easier in the long run.

First off, please don't quote the whole top post when its a long guide like this. I know its the default to quote the post when you reply. So just delete it, before you submit your post. We don't need the thread cluttered up with multiple reposts of what is already in the top post.
The mod makes very specific changes to the kernel, so I would say there is most likely no way in heck this will work on an M7, and might even damage it.

Ok... Sorry and thanks
HTC M8 and rw fix
Still unable to get this to work,I followed your detailed instructions and wp_mod.ko is in correct directory with correct permission and install-recovery.sh is modified correctly.
However after final rebott (several in fact) /system is still r/o
I took a TRWP backup before I started so I restored and followed your instructions again , still same result, should this work immediately or will it take several reboots before it is operative? Other discussions on this and other sites indicate the latter.

Whichever Sense file corresponds to your Android build in Settings>About>Software.
If you are on the stock ROM, I'm guessing 4.4.2, since I do not believe 4.4.3 has rolled out to T-Mobile yet.
As usual, I would make a nandroid before flashing anything.
